David SchnitterTwo For The Road ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 2023. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A set that's maybe worth it for the title track alone – a fantastic reading of the Henry Mancini classic "Two For The Road", taken by David Schnitter in a wonderfully soulful style – raspy in tone, but with all the melodic genius of the tune itself! Schnitter is beautiful on the rest of the record, too – a date that really reminds us what a master of tone and phrasing he can be on his best records – a very distinct player, and one who is sometimes even bringing a different tenor voice to each track on the set, in ways that give the album a hell of a lot of depth. Other group members include Yaniv Tabenhouse on piano, Masa Kamaguchi on bass, and Jorge Rossy on drums – and also on vibes on three of the album's eleven tracks. Titles include a great reading of the Horace Silver tune "Barbara" – plus "Two For The Road", "Consolation", "Conception", "Blues For John", "Obscurity", "Out Of Nowhere", and "Ugly Beauty". CD

Art BlakeyIn My Prime Vols 1 & 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Tidal Waves, Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $27.99 35.99
You gotta love the confidence in Blakey's title for this one – because even in the late 70s, over 20 years since starting the Jazz Messengers, he was still very much in his prime! The album has him working with a wonderful group that includes Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, David Schnitter, and James Williams – plus percussionist Ray Mantilla, added in on a few tracks to give the set a slightly fuller sound. Tracks are long, dynamic, and gorgeous – really stepping out with the warmth and imagination that Blakey never let die during his career – but which seemed to be burning as brightly during this stretch as it was during the few really noteworthy points of earlier years. The set features wonderful early readings of Watson tunes "Time Will Tell" and "To See Her Face" – plus "Kamal", "Jody", "Hawkman", "People Who Laugh", "Ronnie's A Dynamite Lady", and "1978". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great vinyl pressing – both vols 1 and 2 brought together in a single set!)

✨✧ Art BlakeyNight In Tunisia (Philips) ... CD
Philips, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real late 70s Blakey cooker – a set that features only 3 long tracks, all very open-ended solo vehicles for young members of the group at the time! The lineup here includes David Schnitter on tenor, Bobby Watson on alto, Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, and James Williams on piano – all really stretching out here on a trio of older Blakey numbers that are loosely arranged as solo vehicles to capture the best energy of the players. Titles include an 18 minute take on "Night In Tunisia", plus versions of "Moanin" and "Blues March". CD

✨✧ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersSesjun Radio Shows ... CD
T2 (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic radio performances from one of our favorite stretches of the legendary Jazz Messengers group – a time when the lineup featured a young Bobby Watson on alto and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet – two players who'd grow into fantastic leaders on their own, but who here help bring a lot of new life to the group! Watson is especially wonderful – contributing a few key compositions, and that soaring spirit in his horn, which really helped usher in a whole new generation for Blakey's group. James Williams is on piano too, and we actually love his work in this group more than on his later sets as a leader – and remaining players include David Schnitter on tenor on the first six tracks, and Billy Pierce on the horn on the remaining two – and either Dennis Irwin or Charles Fambrough on bass. Art's still the rock-solid core of the group – a tremendous leader who always gets fantastic performances out of young players – and titles include "ETA", "Dr J", "Free For All", "Along Came Betty", "ETA", and "Evaline". ✨✧ Art BlakeyArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Live In Moers 1976 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Jazz Line (Germany), 1976. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Searing work from a 70s lineup of the Jazz Messengers – captured here in a nicely stretched-out live performance at the Moers Jazz Festival! The group features lots of youthful talent from David Schnitter on tenor and Mickey Tucker on piano – a great player who really matches the soulful pulse of the music with just the right vibe – and older Messengers trumpeter Bill Hardman is back in the group, alongside the younger bassist Chris Amberger. Blakey is rock-solid on drums, and on leadership – and titles include long versions of "Uranus", "Gypsy Folk Tales", "Along Came Betty", "Blues March", "I Can't Get Started", and "Backgammon". ✨✧ Art BlakeyMoanin/Sesjun Radio Shows Vols 1 & 2 (3CD set) ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1968/Early 80s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two different slices of Art Blakey – served up here in a 3CD set! Moanin isn't the Blue Note album of the same name, but a fantastic live set from 1968 – recorded after Blakey's classic Blue Note years, but with a group of fantastic players that includes a young Billy Harper on tenor, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and Julian Priester on trombone. Harper alone is worth the price of the CD – as his firey solos are great, and the whole album's an excellent peek at his early career! There's a sense of open freedom here that's quite different than the earlier Jazz Messengers groove – and this European date is a great complement to the better-known US live recording with the same group from the time. The set features a number of nice long tracks – like Slide Hampton's "Slide's Delight", Billy Harper's "Blues For Eros", Bobby Timmons' "Moanin", and the Jazz Messengers' standard "You Don't Know What Love Is". Sesjun Radio Shows 1 is fantastic radio performances from one of our favorite stretches of the legendary Jazz Messengers group – a time when the lineup featured a young Bobby Watson on alto and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet – two players who'd grow into fantastic leaders on their own, but who here help bring a lot of new life to the group! Watson is especially wonderful – contributing a few key compositions, and that soaring spirit in his horn, which really helped usher in a whole new generation for Blakey's group. Art's still the rock-solid core of the group – a tremendous leader who always gets fantastic performances out of young players – and titles include "ETA", "Dr J", "Free For All", "Along Came Betty", "ETA", and "Evaline". Sesjun Radio Shows 2 is live work from the great Art Blakey – a set that features two different performances from two really great groups! The first two cuts are from 1980 – from a time when the Jazz Messengers features up and coming 80s giants Bobby Watson on alto, Valery Ponomarev on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor, James Williams on piano, and Charles Fambrough on bass – all young musicians who'd evolve into leaders on their own in a few short years after these recordings, but who really sparkle here under Blakey's leadership! The cuts feature a great take on the Williams tune "1977 AD", and a long version of the Jazz Messengers standard "Blues March". The last four tracks feature a slightly later group – still with Fambrough on bass, but including wonderful tenor and soprano sax work from Jean Toussaint, plus trumpet from Terence Blanchard, alto from Donald Harrison, and piano from Johnny O'Neal – an equally great lineup, but in a completely different way. Titles include a great take on the Fambrough tune "Little Man" – plus "Polka Dots & Moonbeams" and "Moanin". CD

✨✧ Art BlakeyReflections In Blue ... LP
Timeless (Netherlands), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Key proof that Art Blakey was still going strong in the late 70s – continuing his 60s legacy of working with the best young players he could find, in a setting that was bristling with sweet soul jazz energy! This version of The Jazz Messengers includes some tremendous players – including a young Bobby Watson on alto, the great David Schnitter on tenor, James Williams on piano, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet – all grooving with Art in a style that steps nicely from the soulful Prestige Records years, when Blakey was leading the group with Woody Shaw and Carter Jefferson. Tracks are nearly all originals – loping and grooving with a soulful finish that's really wonderful, showing off equal parts of writing from nearly all corners of the group. The album's awash in soulful joy and love, and titles include "Reflections In Blue", "ETA", "Mishima", "Say Dr J", and "Stretching". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Routine Jazz QuintetRoutine Jazz Quintet ... CD
Routine (Japan), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hip hardbop from this current Japanese combo – one with a great ear for the sorts of 60s jazz we love on labels like Blue Note or Prestige! The group's less club jazz oriented than some of their contemporaries, and have an ear more for straighter jazz with a soulful feel – played perfectly by a quintet lineup that includes trumpet, tenor, piano, bass, and drums – plus a bit of soprano sax on some of the album's hippest cuts! The choice of tunes is wonderful, and includes some of our favorite jazz gems from years back – performed by the group in ways that open up the tunes with a new sort of feeling. Tracks include Jimmy Heath's "The Quota", Walter Booker's "Book's Bossa", Tubby Hayes' "Down In The Village", Harold Mabern's "Richie's Dillema", Bill Holman's "Toots Sweet", and David Schnitter's "Mishima".
