✨✧ VariousDaptone Gold 2 ... LP
Daptone, 2015. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Live like a funky legend with this massively-stuffed Daptone Gold collection – filled with gems from one of the coolest, funkiest record labels of the past 20 years! The set features a few special tracks for the collection, plus some numbers from old Daptone 45s – making a full length debut here – plus lots more of the classic-styled cuts that make the label so great – some of the first and best of the new wave of funk that first broke on these shores at the end of the 90s – still handled by Daptone better than most! There's loads of deep soul vocals, hard funky drums, sweet guitar lines, keyboards, and other classic soul touches – and exclusive tracks include "Thunderclap" by The Dap Kings and "You Gotta Move" by Naomi Shelton – alongside other titles that include "Dirty Money" by Antibalas, "Luv Jones" by Charles Bradley & Larose Jackson, "Little Boys With Shiny Toys" by Sharon Jones, "Sinner" by Naomi Shelton, "The Traitor" by Menahan Street Band, "Witches Boogaloo" by Sugarman 3, "Unbroken Unshave" by Budos Band, "Look Closer" by Saun & Starr, "Strictly Reserved" by Charles Bradley, and "Out Of The Wilderness" by Como Mamas. Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Budos BandBudos Band ... CD
Daptone, 2005. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do". CD

Budos BandBudos Band III ... CD
Daptone, 2010. Used ... $5.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). Budos BandV ... LP
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". LP, Vinyl record album

El RegoEl Rego ... CD
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $5.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! The CD comes with a great booklet featuring notes by Gossner and personal reflections by El Rego. Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". James Hunter SixNick Of Time ... CD
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
One of the best things that ever happened to singer James Hunter was the moment he formed his James Hunter Six – a great combo who've really helped Hunter deepen his groove in recent years! James was always a great vocalist – one of the best blue-eyed soul singers of the past 20 years – but with the Six, he's got this rock-solid vibe that really seems to bring out his best – as the group effortlessly moves between late R&B, 60s soul, and a few 70s influences – all with a style that's nicely left of center, and which never makes you feel like James and the group are trying to just echo the past! Instead, there's a personal approach that sets Hunter apart from the pack – one of those really unique talents in the world of soul, maybe like The Peddlers or Lonnie Satin, to name two of our favorites. All tracks are Hunter originals – and tunes include "Missing In Action", "Nick Of Time", "Who's Fooling Who", "Paradise For One", "He's Your Could've Been", and "Brother Or Other". CD

James Hunter SixWhatever It Takes ... LP
Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 17.98
We'll be the first to admit, we were always a bit suspicious of James Hunter at the start – but over the years, with records this great, he's really won us over – to the point that we're not sure why we even had any question about his music in the first place! The really strong step forward in Hunter's career was mixing his sublime vocals with the classic soul approach of Daptone Records – a move that ensures that there's no fakery at all in the setting, which lets James really take the spotlight and shine – working with music from his own small soul combo, who seem to perfectly evoke the sound of AM soul radio on a hot summer night in the early 60s! Titles include "Blisters", "Whatever It Takes", "I Don't Wanna Be Without You", "How Long", "Don't Let Pride Take You For A Ride", "I Should've Spoke Up", "It Was Gonna Be You", and "Mm Hmm". Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. Used ... $8.99
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". CD

Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. A pair of raw gospel soul gems from the Como Mamas – gritty but beautiful songs from the Move Upstairs sessions just as worthy as any tracks on that records, but unreleased til this great single! "Hold On To God's Unchanging Hand" is a traditional gospel tune stripped to the soulful essence here, with spirited and emotional vocals and raw funk drums that work so well here. "You've Got To Move" works on a similar level, with some really great use of the organ on this one. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ CochemeaAll My Relations ... CD
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You might know Cochemea Gastelum from his work in The Dap-Kings over the years – but this time around, the saxophonist is very much his own man – blowing a version of his instruments that often seems electrified, ala classic Varitone from the late 60s – used in these really new and compelling ways! Cochemea has occasional tribal impulses that belie his look on the cover – but all in this very focused way that never sounds too indulgent, and which instead always steps back to the soulful territory we love from Daptone Records! And yet the record's also maybe something new for the label too – looser, never straight funk or soul – as Cochemea heads up this fantastic ensemble that's very heavy on percussion, which drives the sound with a raw, rootsy vibe – while Victor Axelrod plays keyboards, and the man himself blows on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. A real killer – with titles that include "Maso Ye'Eme", "All My Relations", "Sonora", "Los Muertos", "Mescalero", "Song Of Happiness", and "Mitote". CD

The groove here is nice and gritty – a bit messier and muddier than Daptone, but definitely in a stretch of the funky universe – and although the group jam instrumentally on a number of tracks, they also get a bit of vocal help along the way – from Naomi Shelton, Jason Joshua, and John Dokes. Lee Fields & The ExpressionsIt Rains Love (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 16.99
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". Ubiquity, 2014. New Copy ... $13.99 18.98
A really great second album from Ikebe Shakedown – easily the group's best work so far, and a real cut above the usual Afro-styled groove! These guys have a great way of laying back in their rhythms – still keeping things funky, but nicely paced too – so that there's a fresh feel to the way they layer together their horns and percussion, and let the keyboards nicely simmer away in the groove! The style's a bit like what El Michels did to more conventional funk groups – with the same sort of super-dope results – and the whole thing was recorded perfectly at the Daptone Studios, with a massively old school sort of vibe. The whole thing's instrumental, and titles include "The Beast", "Rio Grande", "The Offering", "Stone By Stone", "Last Stand", "Dram", "Chosen Path", and "Cover Your Tracks". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door". ✨✧ Osaka MonaurailThankful – For What You've Done ... CD
RD Records (Japan), 2005. Used ... $22.99
A massive bit of funk from the Japanese scene – served up by a group with a real love for the classic sounds of James Brown! Osaka Monaurail take their name from the JB's tune "Monaurail" (also picking up the misspelling in the process!) – and play in a JBs-styled mix of tight horns, riffing guitars, and socking funky drum bits that never seem to miss! The lead singer growls in a style that's a bit James Brown – but which is also touched by his own approach to the lyrics, in a tone that's one of the most unusual we've ever heard from a funk band. But the real strength of the set is in its grooves – tight, right, and perfectly done at a level that reminds us strongly of the best late 60s funk work on King Records – but which also has a hard-vamping style that's all its own! These guys come from the other side of the globe, but we'd easily rank them right up there with the best of the Desco, Soul Fire, and Daptone generation! Titles include "Double Up Now", "Back & Alive 77", "Thankful (For What You've Done)", "Two Houses Make A Happy Home (rmx)", "Six Days Of Madness", and "Mindpower (parts 1 & 2)". CD

We got the word on The Jay Vons, and it is that this organ soul and raw vintage R&B influenced combo delivers the goods in a big way – with an authentic sound to show for it – recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul! The group's earlier singles had the deep soul and funk base elements of the Daptone sound, but expanded on it with mod and baroque 60s pop and rock touches, and this full length delivers on those promises while still hewing strongly to a tight groove overall. The secret to the taut vibe is probably the excellent core quartet – organ, guitar, bass and drums (and they're organ-forward for sure) – fleshed out nicely in the studio by horns, strings, vibes and more when the groove calls for a bigger sound. A landmark album – one that has the beat-heavy Quantic transform into the Quantic Soul Orchestra, for a stunning deep funk performance! The record sounds like nothing Quantic have done in the past – and shares a sound with work from the Soul Fire/Daptone underground, with a tight blend of hard drums, fast-riffing guitar, and all-solid 70s funky grooves. The one element that we would say the record shares with Quantic is a real talent for picking up neat instrumental twists – like the odd flute fill, string wash, or off-kilter drum sound – all of which make for a record that really opens up the genre of deep funk, and makes for one of the freshest releases we've heard of its type in a while! Includes a great deep funk cover of 4 Hero's "Hold It Down", plus the tracks "Terrapin", "Something That's Real", "South Coastin", "Stampede", "Raw Ingredients", "Babarabatiri", and "Take Your Time Change Your Mind".
