Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Budos Band may be long in the tooth – 15 years since their first record (!) – but they still sound pretty darn funky and fresh to our ears, and maybe even return here to some of the rawer modes of their first few records! The approach is simple, but fantastic – heavy drums on the bottom and exotic horns on the top – almost as if a hip hop DJ discovered all the best funky tracks from the Ethiopiques series back in the mid 90s, then set about to create a unique brand of instrumentals – all colored with sweet keyboard lines and other great touches! Titles include "Sixth Hammer", "Dusterado", "Silver Stallion", "The Wrangler", "Gun Metal Grey", "Budonian Knight", "Mierda De Toro", and "Snake Hawk". CD

Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsKeep On Looking/NBL (inst with strings) ... 7-inch
Daptone, 2008. New Copy ... $7.99
There's a nice raw guitar line at the start of this one – before the Dap Kings come into the mix and send the tune into funky chugging bliss – then Sharon Jones steps into the spotlight, blows us away with her vocals, and reminds us why she's always the main attraction! The flipside features the Dap Kings on their own – with a great drum break at the start of "NBL", which then gives way to wicked guitar work mixed with swirling strings – followed by another drum break later on on the tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Daptone/Dunham, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 7.99
Sweet, slow rolling funky soul on one side and more uptempo groove on the other! "There's A Day Coming" was originally recorded to back the late great Charles Bradley, and it's got the right kind of tender guitar groove and gritty underbelly for that job, but it's nicely done by the band here on their own, especially after the organ kicks in. "Tommy Don't" has a more of uptempo old school R&B sound, with more horns in the mix. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Daptone, 2018. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great little cut that really lives up to its title – a jazzy mambo taken at a nice fast tempo – complete with some excellent percussion, fast-scatting vocals, and this great flute line that comes along in the middle and makes the whole thing really sparkle! The flipside is great too – and feels like some lost late 50s Latin number that you'd stumble upon in a collection of rarities – slow, but grooving – with a dark edge, great saxophone lines, and a nice spare setup! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Michael RaultIt's A New Day Tonight ... CD
Wick/Daptone, 2018. Used ... $8.99
Buzzing and sunny power pop on a level that's rarely reached post-millennium! Michael Rault wouldn't only be filed so close to the Raspberries in your record collections because of the Ra-, he's a genuine torch carrier for sounds pioneered by bands of that ilk – a mix of sweetness and grit with tuneful songs, bright vocals, fuzzy guitars and rhythms. Recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul in Brooklyn, it's pretty wonderful how the old school mojo that imbues funk & soul records made there works its way onto sunny psych/power, too – but all credit to Rault's voice and songcraft! Includes "I'll Be There", "New Day Tonight", "Sleep With Me", "Oh, Clever Boy", "Sitting Still", "Dream Song", "Pyramid Scheme", "Out Of The Light", "Sleeping And Smiling" and "When The Sun Shines". ✨✧ Sugarman ThreeSugar's Boogaloo ... CD
Desco/Daptone, 1998. Used ... $8.99
One of the first great albums on the now-legendary Desco label – proof that classic funk was alive and well on at the end of the 20th century! Sugarman Three is an organ-heavy combo led by tenor saxophonist Neal Sugarman – a great player with an ear for classic 60s styles of labels like Cadet or Prestige (and you know we're not light with comparisons like that!) The tunes here have a short, hard, really playful feel that reminds us a lot of the interplay that Jack McDuff and Harold Vick got together on their best albums – and the whole thing's recorded with a no-nonsense, back-to-basics kind of sound that's pure funk all the way through – and not that "too bright" kind of sound you'll get from modern organ jazz sets that try to hard and always fall flat! The combo was little known at the time, but got a great endorsement from Keb Darge on the cover – one they more than live up to with a smoking little set that includes the tracks "Hankerin", "Skunk Walk", "Sock Monkey", "Red Wine", "Sweet Tooth", and "Hot Sauce". Heck, with names like that, you know they've gotta be great! CD

✨✧ Sugarman ThreeWhat The World Needs Now ... CD
Daptone, 2012. Used ... $6.99
The return of the great ones – and quite possibly the funkiest album ever from The Sugarman Three – a crowning achievement for this funky combo that we've loved for years! The core trio is still in place – soaring Hammond, tight tenor, and heavy drums – but they've also added in some extra help from the Daptone universe – which helps the group hit an ultra-funky sound here – one that's sharp-edged, no-nonsense, and a wicked blend of soul jazz and late 60s funk! There's still plenty of standout tenor solos from Neal Sugarman, and wicked organ lines from Adam Scone – but there's also a bit of added trumpet, and great Bosco Mann basslines – which really give the whole thing a heavy punch. The groove is much more stripped-down and hard-edged than the Dap-Kings – and burns with a fire that never lets up for a minute – proof that in a world of funky revival combos, some of the older act still do it best! Titles include "Mellow Meeting", "Dirty Water", "Rudy's Intervention", "Your Friendly Neighborhood Sugarman", "But It's Alright", "Witch's Boogaloo", "Brother T", and "Love Went Away". CD

✨✧ Lee FieldsLet's Get A Groove On (with bonus download) ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning return to form by Lee Fields, one of the 70s' lost funky geniuses – heard here in the initial set that would catapult him back in the spotlight for a whole new generation! The record was issued by Desco Records – the key precursor to Daptone, Soul Fire, and other modern funk imprints – and it's got a sound that feels like was lifted from the vaults of James Brown's People label, circa 1972! Unlike other "funk revival" titles of the 90s (especially those by ex-JBs Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker), this one's got a totally perfect sound, and was produced with a loving adherence to the classic 70ss funk sound that made Lee' early records so great – raw vocals, mixed with equally sharp instrumentation – all put together with help from Bosco Mann, Gabriel Roth, and Philippe Lehman – the latter two of whom had been bootlegging older funk records, but were finally ready to try their hand at something of their own. The instrumentation is a tight batch of drum-heavy, bass-heavy, break-heavy grooves – and Lee's voice is incredibly rich and soulful, approaching near-Godfather-like sensibilities! We love this one to death, and it's probably the most perfectly-formed album that Desco ever issued. Titles include "Bad, Bad, Bad", "Let's Get A Groove On", "Watch That Man", "Put It On Me", and "Steam Train". Great great great – and a real smoker! LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2000s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from Sharon Jones – and a record that's a bit different than some of her other work for the Daptone label! The set features the group doing cover versions of tracks by other artists – some that appeared as singles over the years, others commissioned for projects, and a few that never saw the light of day at all – brought together here to make a unique posthumous album from Sharon and the Dap-Kings! If you know the tightness of the group, and Jones' classic style of soul vocals, you'll know you're in for a treat – a bit like when Otis Redding might have taken on a familiar tune for Stax – in a lineup that includes "Inspiration Information", "Take Me With U", "What Have You Done For Me Lately", "Signed Sealed Delivered", "Just Dropped In", "Giving Up", "Rescue Me", "In The Bush", "It Hurts To Be Alone", and "Trespasser". The greatest album to date from Sugarman 3 – one of the funkiest combos of the past 50 years! The group's organ/sax sound has never sounded so great – and it's pumped up even further here from some added guest instrumentation, including drums from Bernard Purdie, plus vocals on a number of cuts from deep funk legends Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and Naomi Davis. The whole thing's as funky as funky can be – the kind of a record that would be selling for $300 if it came out in the 70s, and which is even nicer to have at a low everyday price! ✨✧ AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. ✨✧ Charles BradleyVictim Of Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". ✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band ... LP
Daptone, 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". The fantastic final album from Sharon Jones – a wonderfully deep talent who was taken from us all too soon! The set's maybe the ultimate setting for Sharon's incredible voice – as it features both her longtime core combo, the Dap-Kings – as well as additional backings from the Bushwick Philharmonic – a small ensemble of strings who really help elevate the music to classic status! If you're worried that the strings might soften the sound, the very first note of the record will put your mind at rest – as will the heavy drums that mark just about every track, and keep things hard and funky throughout. They might be borrowing her band, but they sure can't dampen her soul – because Sharon Jones is strongly back in action, and sounding funkier and more deeply soulful than ever! Given that Sharon wasn't singing back in the 60s, it's hard to think we'd be calling her the real deal – but in a world of crossover classic-copping soul singers, or slightly rewarmed older acts, Jones is a true treat through and through – the kind of soul singer whose work still recalls the best era of the funky 45 underground! The mighty Dap-Kings are in full force here – snapping along the groove with a range of classic soul influences – styles borrowed from Memphis, Miami, Muscle Shoals, and more – all sifted down to some of the tightest grooves any singer ever had the chance of working with! Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest new groups we've heard on Daptone in a long time – an instrumental combo that's definitely funky, but which has some of the exotic touches you might expect from their name! There's a nice current of strings that slide in alongside more familiar funk instrumentation – some violins, cellos, and even a harp – used to give the groove this expansive vibe that's partly blacksploitation soundtrack, but much more than that as well! Both Leon Michels and Neal Sugarman are in the group on tenor sax – but the real brainchild here seems to be Toby Panzer, who produced and arranged, and who plays a range of sublime sounds on organ, clavinet, harpsichord, vibes, and percussion! Titles include "Sirens Of Jupiter", "Saturn", "Pluto's Lament", "Mercury's Odyssey", "Europa & The Bull", "Sagittarius By Moonlight", "Neptune", "Mars", and "Diana By My Side". LP, Vinyl record album

Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DaktarisSoul Explosion ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1998. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest grooves from the legendary Desco Records years – a brilliant album of modern Afro Funk done by The Daktaris – in a groove that's just as hard-hitting as any of Fela's work from the 70s! The album was one of the first to bring back an older African style to current funk – and even years later, it's still one of the best examples of the sound – a razor-sharp session that helped set the stage for better-known Antibalas work to come! Percussion and guitar is super-heavy throughout – produced with that bare-bones Desco style, and handled in a way that makes you think the record might be some treasure from mid 70s Nigeria – a trick the label tried to pull when it was released! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". ✨✧ Lee FieldsLet's Get A Groove On (green splatter vinyl) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock

✨✧ James Hunter SixNick Of Time ... CD
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best things that ever happened to singer James Hunter was the moment he formed his James Hunter Six – a great combo who've really helped Hunter deepen his groove in recent years! James was always a great vocalist – one of the best blue-eyed soul singers of the past 20 years – but with the Six, he's got this rock-solid vibe that really seems to bring out his best – as the group effortlessly moves between late R&B, 60s soul, and a few 70s influences – all with a style that's nicely left of center, and which never makes you feel like James and the group are trying to just echo the past! Instead, there's a personal approach that sets Hunter apart from the pack – one of those really unique talents in the world of soul, maybe like The Peddlers or Lonnie Satin, to name two of our favorites. All tracks are Hunter originals – and tunes include "Missing In Action", "Nick Of Time", "Who's Fooling Who", "Paradise For One", "He's Your Could've Been", and "Brother Or Other". CD

✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsSoul Time ... LP
Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn damn damn – maybe the funkiest album ever from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings! The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone classic approach to funky soul, one that's definitely been honed to a "T" through their important work on the road during the previous few years! And Sharon Jones is great – with vocals that are way deeper and much longer-lasting than any rehab outpatient wannabe – sending home these tunes with a quality that may well pass most of her classic female soul inspirations from back in the day. And even though the set brings together some older singles and other odd bits, it's got a rock-solid punch that makes it a very unified album throughout! Titles include "Settling In", "I'm Not Gonna Cry", "When I Come Home", "Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects", "New Shoes", "Without A Trace", and "Inspiration Information". LP, Vinyl record album

We'll be the first to admit, we were always a bit suspicious of James Hunter at the start – but over the years, with records this great, he's really won us over – to the point that we're not sure why we even had any question about his music in the first place! The really strong step forward in Hunter's career was mixing his sublime vocals with the classic soul approach of Daptone Records – a move that ensures that there's no fakery at all in the setting, which lets James really take the spotlight and shine – working with music from his own small soul combo, who seem to perfectly evoke the sound of AM soul radio on a hot summer night in the early 60s! Titles include "Blisters", "Whatever It Takes", "I Don't Wanna Be Without You", "How Long", "Don't Let Pride Take You For A Ride", "I Should've Spoke Up", "It Was Gonna Be You", and "Mm Hmm". The debut album from the Greboy Allstars – a live group, and one that works in contrast to the funky beats that Greyboy was producing on his own – but at a level that still shares an equally strong love of the best sounds of 70s funk! These guys were very early in the deep funk game – before Daptone, Colemine, Soul Fire, and all the other labels that would issue material of this nature in yars to come – and they're joined here by the legendary Fred Wesley on trombone – who gives their music just the right sort of touch! Tru Thoughts (UK), 2003. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 15.99
A landmark album – one that has the beat-heavy Quantic transform into the Quantic Soul Orchestra, for a stunning deep funk performance! The record sounds like nothing Quantic have done in the past – and shares a sound with work from the Soul Fire/Daptone underground, with a tight blend of hard drums, fast-riffing guitar, and all-solid 70s funky grooves. The one element that we would say the record shares with Quantic is a real talent for picking up neat instrumental twists – like the odd flute fill, string wash, or off-kilter drum sound – all of which make for a record that really opens up the genre of deep funk, and makes for one of the freshest releases we've heard of its type in a while! Includes a great deep funk cover of 4 Hero's "Hold It Down", plus the tracks "Terrapin", "Something That's Real", "South Coastin", "Stampede", "Raw Ingredients", "Babarabatiri", and "Take Your Time Change Your Mind". Deep funk, but with a compelling twist – bits of South American styles filtering into the mix from time to time, but in subtle ways that never lose the groove! The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door". One of the funkiest groups of the past decade – and a hell of a great little album, right down to the JBs-styled cover art! Osaka Monaurail have it going on all fronts – tight drums, economical bass, riffing guitars, and the kind of horn work that we haven't heard since Fred Wesley stopped working with James Brown – always perfect, never hokey, and handled with a sense of space and soul that's extremely rare for a group of younger musicians! The production is wonderful too – at a level that rivals our favorite from the 70s, and which shows that it isn't just the Daptone and Soul Fire sound of New York that can get the feel of a "classic" funk record right. It's hard to sum up the strength of this set in a few short sentences – but take our word for it when we tell you that this smoking little record can easily go head to head with some of the best of the People Records generation! Big Crown, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". A really great second album from Ikebe Shakedown – easily the group's best work so far, and a real cut above the usual Afro-styled groove! These guys have a great way of laying back in their rhythms – still keeping things funky, but nicely paced too – so that there's a fresh feel to the way they layer together their horns and percussion, and let the keyboards nicely simmer away in the groove! The style's a bit like what El Michels did to more conventional funk groups – with the same sort of super-dope results – and the whole thing was recorded perfectly at the Daptone Studios, with a massively old school sort of vibe.
