AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". CD features the bonus track "Fist Of Flowers". CD

Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine ... LP
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". Budos BandV ... CD
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". CD

CochemeaAll My Relations ... CD
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
You might know Cochemea Gastelum from his work in The Dap-Kings over the years – but this time around, the saxophonist is very much his own man – blowing a version of his instruments that often seems electrified, ala classic Varitone from the late 60s – used in these really new and compelling ways! Cochemea has occasional tribal impulses that belie his look on the cover – but all in this very focused way that never sounds too indulgent, and which instead always steps back to the soulful territory we love from Daptone Records! And yet the record's also maybe something new for the label too – looser, never straight funk or soul – as Cochemea heads up this fantastic ensemble that's very heavy on percussion, which drives the sound with a raw, rootsy vibe – while Victor Axelrod plays keyboards, and the man himself blows on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. A real killer – with titles that include "Maso Ye'Eme", "All My Relations", "Sonora", "Los Muertos", "Mescalero", "Song Of Happiness", and "Mitote". CD

A pair of raw gospel soul gems from the Como Mamas – gritty but beautiful songs from the Move Upstairs sessions just as worthy as any tracks on that records, but unreleased til this great single! "Hold On To God's Unchanging Hand" is a traditional gospel tune stripped to the soulful essence here, with spirited and emotional vocals and raw funk drums that work so well here. "You've Got To Move" works on a similar level, with some really great use of the organ on this one. 7-inch, Vinyl record

El RegoEl Rego ... LP
Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". James Hunter SixWhatever It Takes ... LP
Daptone, 2018. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
We'll be the first to admit, we were always a bit suspicious of James Hunter at the start – but over the years, with records this great, he's really won us over – to the point that we're not sure why we even had any question about his music in the first place! The really strong step forward in Hunter's career was mixing his sublime vocals with the classic soul approach of Daptone Records – a move that ensures that there's no fakery at all in the setting, which lets James really take the spotlight and shine – working with music from his own small soul combo, who seem to perfectly evoke the sound of AM soul radio on a hot summer night in the early 60s! Titles include "Blisters", "Whatever It Takes", "I Don't Wanna Be Without You", "How Long", "Don't Let Pride Take You For A Ride", "I Should've Spoke Up", "It Was Gonna Be You", and "Mm Hmm". Daptone, 2012. Used ... $8.99
Sublime work from one of the coolest funky combos around – a group who aren't content to just hit the same funky styles as other outfits – and one who really stretch strongly in their pursuit of new sounds! The set's definitely funky – especially on the drums – but there's also this amazing interplay between the horns, weird sounds from the organ, and cool extra touches on auto harp and ukulele – which gives the music these exotic elements that are simply mindblowing! The set's a stone smoker from the start – instrumental, but in ways that let the Menahan Street Band open up way more than when working with a singer – showing us that they've got some of the freshest ideas in the contemporary funky underground. Titles include "The Crossing", "Sleight Of Hand", "Three Faces", "Keep Coming Back", "Seven Is The Wind", "Driftwood", and "Ivory & Blue". CD

The Scone Cash Players have a name that's a but unusual, but a sound that's right on the money – thanks to some massive Hammond work from leader Adam Scone, and lots of tight saxophone lines from Ian Hendrickson-Smith – who you'll remember from his work in the Dap-Kings! The groove here is nice and gritty – a bit messier and muddier than Daptone, but definitely in a stretch of the funky universe – and although the group jam instrumentally on a number of tracks, they also get a bit of vocal help along the way – from Naomi Shelton, Jason Joshua, and John Dokes. One of the best things that ever happened to singer James Hunter was the moment he formed his James Hunter Six – a great combo who've really helped Hunter deepen his groove in recent years! James was always a great vocalist – one of the best blue-eyed soul singers of the past 20 years – but with the Six, he's got this rock-solid vibe that really seems to bring out his best – as the group effortlessly moves between late R&B, 60s soul, and a few 70s influences – all with a style that's nicely left of center, and which never makes you feel like James and the group are trying to just echo the past! Instead, there's a personal approach that sets Hunter apart from the pack – one of those really unique talents in the world of soul, maybe like The Peddlers or Lonnie Satin, to name two of our favorites. We know what you're thinking – Finland is a very unlikely source for great soul music – but the company's also worked with American artists right from the start, and has a deep deep appreciation for the classic modes of the vintage 45 underground – which is why this whole package feels like a stack of rare singles you might have found in the back of a New Jersey record store from the 70s! Most numbers here are mellow or midtempo, and are in a mix of deep and sweet soul modes – all handled with superb instrumentation and production from Cold Diamond & Mink, who ensure that the whole thing has just the right vibe. Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". One of the greatest grooves from the legendary Desco Records years – a brilliant album of modern Afro Funk done by The Daktaris – in a groove that's just as hard-hitting as any of Fela's work from the 70s! The album was one of the first to bring back an older African style to current funk – and even years later, it's still one of the best examples of the sound – a razor-sharp session that helped set the stage for better-known Antibalas work to come! Percussion and guitar is super-heavy throughout – produced with that bare-bones Desco style, and handled in a way that makes you think the record might be some treasure from mid 70s Nigeria – a trick the label tried to pull when it was released! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". The Frightnrs have plenty more to say here – and they say it in a really sharp-edged approximation of older rocksteady modes! The group are contemporary, but like the best acts on Daptone, they've got an instantly classic feel – thanks to instrumentation and production that take us right back to late 60s Kingston, but with some of the sharper funky currents we've come to expect from the label! And while The Frightnrs may pitch themselves as an old school reggae act, they're also one that have a heavy dose of soul – almost a late night New Jersey current to their music at times – as if the All Platinum/Stang label put out their own version of Jamaican soul. "There's A Day Coming" was originally recorded to back the late great Charles Bradley, and it's got the right kind of tender guitar groove and gritty underbelly for that job, but it's nicely done by the band here on their own, especially after the organ kicks in. La Castanya, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
We got the word on The Jay Vons, and it is that this organ soul and raw vintage R&B influenced combo delivers the goods in a big way – with an authentic sound to show for it – recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul! The group's earlier singles had the deep soul and funk base elements of the Daptone sound, but expanded on it with mod and baroque 60s pop and rock touches, and this full length delivers on those promises while still hewing strongly to a tight groove overall. The secret to the taut vibe is probably the excellent core quartet – organ, guitar, bass and drums (and they're organ-forward for sure) – fleshed out nicely in the studio by horns, strings, vibes and more when the groove calls for a bigger sound. A landmark album – one that has the beat-heavy Quantic transform into the Quantic Soul Orchestra, for a stunning deep funk performance! The record sounds like nothing Quantic have done in the past – and shares a sound with work from the Soul Fire/Daptone underground, with a tight blend of hard drums, fast-riffing guitar, and all-solid 70s funky grooves. The one element that we would say the record shares with Quantic is a real talent for picking up neat instrumental twists – like the odd flute fill, string wash, or off-kilter drum sound – all of which make for a record that really opens up the genre of deep funk, and makes for one of the freshest releases we've heard of its type in a while! Includes a great deep funk cover of 4 Hero's "Hold It Down", plus the tracks "Terrapin", "Something That's Real", "South Coastin", "Stampede", "Raw Ingredients", "Babarabatiri", and "Take Your Time Change Your Mind". The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door". LP, Vinyl record album
