Really lovely work from pianist DaniloPerez – a set that features some wonderful orchestrations from Claus Ogerman, who brings a similar spirit to the record as some of his best backings in the 70s! The core group features Perez on piano with a hip rhythm duo of Christian McBride on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – augmented with percussion from Luis Quintero, and a group that would already sound wonderful on their own, even without the backings! But Ogerman's sensitive shadings really help deepen the sound – bringing in a sense of space and majesty, but in really subtle ways – letting Danilo's piano ring out with great tones, and even allowing plenty of sound for McBride's warm basslines. Cassandra Wilson sings on two tracks – "Lazy Afternoon" and "My Heart Sings" – and other titles include the Ogerman originals "Across The Crystal Sea", "Rays & Shadows", "The Purple Condor", "If I Forget You", and "Another Autumn" – all wonderful compositions! Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and DaniloPerez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD
One of the most adventurous records we've heard from Wayne Shorter in years – a collection of live recordings made in Europe in the summer of 2001, featuring a free-thinking group that includes DaniloPerez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The sound here is almost end-of-the-60s Shorter – as the tracks have an incredible amount of space, and might at times almost be dubbed "out". Shorter returns to his angular genius on tenor and soprano sax – crafting long, complicated lines that have a lot more edginess than we've heard from him in years! Titles include "Go", "Valse Triste", "Sanctuary", "Masquelero", "Footprints", and "Atlantis". LP, Vinyl record album

A follow-up to Shorter's successful Footprints Live album – done in the same sort of angular and introspective mode, and also with a group that includes DaniloPerez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blad on drums. The overall style's not as much in the joyous, soulful Shorter mode that we love so much from the earlier years – but the record is a good follow-up to Footprints, and will please if you dig that set. Titles include "Smilin Through", "Joy Ryder", "Tinker Bell", "Over Shadow Hill Way", "Adventures Aboard The Golden Mean", and "Beyond The Sound Barrier". CD

Paquito D'Rivera with Arturo Sandoval —
Reunion ... CD Messidor, 1990. Used ...

A great set of Latin-tinged jazz – and the first recording that Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval had made together in many years! The set's got the angular groove of Paquito's best work of the early 80s – tight Latin jazz, with plenty of percussion at the bottom – played out over longer tracks that allow plenty of space for him and Sandoval to solo, and which also feature piano by DaniloPerez and guitar by Fareed Haque. Titles include "Tanga", "Latin American Suite", "Claudia", "Body & Soul", "Reunion", and "Friday Morning". CD

David Sanchez —
Departure ... CD Columbia, 1994. Used ...

Majestically soulful work from tenorist David Sanchez – recorded with a depth and maturity that's incredible, and which is instantly timeless, despite the year of the recording. Sanchez plays both tenor and soprano with a confidence that's only matched by a few players – right up there in the Coltrane and Rollins class – working in a well-matched group that includes DaniloPerez on piano, playing in some bright tones that really make the record sparkle. Other players include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Leon Parker on drums, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Milton Cardona on percussion – who gives the album some great Latin touches at times. Titles include "CJ", "Ebony", "You Got It Diz", "Santander", "The Departure", and "Nina's Mood". CD
One of the strong albums that David Sanchez cut for Columbia in the 90s – clean, simple, back-to-basics playing, done with a strength and confidence not exhibited by most other young players of his generation! The album mixes together modern and Latin jazz modes – all graced by Sanchez's soulful work on tenor, and some occasional freer flights on soprano. Milton Cardona, Leon Parker, and Jerry Gonzalez all give the set some wonderful Latin percussion – and the rest of the group includes DaniloPerez, Roy Hargrove, and Adam Cruz. Titles include "Africa Y Las America", "Bomba Blues", "Mal Social", "Tu Y Mi Cancion", "Little Melonae", and "The Extension". CD
