DR HookerTruth ... LP
On Records/Numero, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
A legendary album from the early 70s underground scene – a set that's got DR Hooker on the cover, looking like some Jesus that's walked away from a recording of Godspell – but a set that's got way more to offer than the image on the front! There's definitely a current of darkness to the tunes, but there's also a message of hope as well – a kind of open, honest quality that makes Hooker and his guitar far more charming than you might expect! The record uses some occasional cool sonic touches from time to time – and has a complexity that you might not expect – not larger arrangements, but just a sort of special approach to the music that's neither the folk or hard rock of so many other obscure indie releases from the time. Titles include "Falling Asleep", "Forge Your Own Chains", "This Thing", "Weather Girl", "The Sea", "Fall In Love", and "A Stranger's Smile". LP, Vinyl record album

Ancients (Isaiah Collier/William Parker/William Hooker)Ancients ... CD
Aguirre (Belgium), 2024. New Copy 2CDs ... $24.99 28.99 About January 31, 2025 (delayed)
A record that's a real nod to the spiritual saxophone genius of Isaiah Collier, as it features him on these beautiful long tracks in the company of two giants from an earlier generation of jazz – the legendary William Parker on bass and the mighty William Hooker on drums! The trio create music that's stunning right from the very first note – with some of the freedoms you're more likely to find in the work of Parker and Hooker, but guided by the powerful force that Collier has become in just a decade or so in jazz. All players add in some extra touches as well – voice from Hooker and Parker, the latter of whom also plays hojok – and a host of "little instruments" from Collier. The record features four long selections, all recorded live in Los Angeles and San Francisco in May of 2023. CD

John Lee HookerBlues Brother – 24 Vintage Sensation Recordings 1948 to 1951 ... CD
Sensation/Ace (UK), Late 1940s/Early 1950s. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A really amazing package – not just for fans of John Lee Hooker, but for anyone who loves postwar blues in general! The work here is all from the tiny Sensation Records label in Detroit – the label to first record John Lee Hooker in the late 40s, and who continued to do sessions with Hooker even after they were getting some of their recordings placed on bigger labels for wider distribution. The material here really gets at the brilliance of the Hooker approach in a second – that spare, striking style that was almost rural blues in construction, but transformed the urban sound as well – given the strong use of electric guitar next to foot-driven rhythm, topped by Hooker's incredible vocal style! The set features 24 gems – including some that were not issued at the time – titles that include "War Is Over", "Sailing Blues", "Women In My Life", "Grinder Man", "Boogie Chillen", "Three Long Years Today", "Goin on Highway 51", "Find Me A Woman", "Hastings Street Boogie", "Burnin Hell", and "Henry's Swing Club". ✨✧ John Lee HookerIt Serves You Right To Suffer ... CD
Universal, 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
There's no suffering here – as the record's a real delight, and one of the more unique sessions in the career of the great John Lee Hooker! The record was done for Impulse Records, mostly known for its jazz recordings at the time – and the session has the vocals and guitar of John Lee next to a trio of more jazz-based players, one that features Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Panama Francis on drums – who somehow do a fantastic job of backing Hooker up! The set has a beautiful recording quality – very crisp and clear, yet never polished – and the work of the other players is incredible, as they really move into John Lee's mode, and somehow have him shining even more strongly than on some of his other albums from the time. This isn't a folk blues set done by a jazz label – and instead, the best of Impulse is used to give Hooker a fantastic showcase – on titles that include "Bottle Up & Go", "Sugar Mama", "Decoration Day", "You're Wrong", and a good cover of "Money". ✨✧ John Lee HookerThat's My Story – John Lee Hooker Sings The Blues ... CD
Riverside/Original Blues Classics, 1960. Used ... $4.99
Great rootsy blues from John Lee Hooker – and an unusual session that has him getting backup help from jazz players Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums! Jones and Hayes only play on a handful of tracks, and most of the focus is on Hooker's damn-great vocals, and acoustic guitar – spun out nicely over a set of tracks that includes "I Need Some Money", a controversial clash with early Motown – plus "One Of These Days", "Gonna Use My Rod", "I Want To Talk About You", "Democrat Man", and "I'm Wanderin". ORG, 2025. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98 On February 7, 2025
A contemporary set from drummer William Hooker, but a set that feels as if it's been plucked from the glory days of the loft jazz scene – as Hooker works here with a host of younger musicians to craft a wonderfully powerful set of tracks that hang perfectly between free improvisation and an internal sense of structure! The players come together in a fantastic way, and nobody is ever trying to hog the spotlight – not even Hooker, who's always been one of the most generous leaders around – gently making space for the talents of Matt LaVelle on trumpet, Stevie Manning on alto, On Davis on guitar, and Adam Lane on bass. Titles include "The Villages", "Exhausting Clouds", "Steam", "Linking", "The Stare", and "Central Features Of Sleep". CD

William HookerShamballa – Duets With Thurston Moore & Elliot Sharp ... LP
Knitting Factory/ORG, 1993. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Legendary jazz drummer William Hooker is in some pretty heady territory here – improvising alongside two different guitarists, both of whom really push the sound in ways that are different than some of Hooker's other records! Thurston Moore provides plenty of freaky sonic fuzz in the first half – and Elliott Sharp is pictured playing a twin-necked guitar in the second – both players who are no strangers to longform improvisation, and whose energy is easily met, if not beaten, but Hooker's incredible command of the drum Kit! The track with Moore is titled "Sirius" – and the one with Sharp is "The Hat & Its Train". LP, Vinyl record album

William HookerSymphonie Of Flowers ... CD
ORG, 2019. Used ... $1.99 13.99
A great album as a leader from the legendary William Hooker – and a fantastic reminder of how wonderful he can be in the spotlight! The set begins with some solo drum work from Hooker, then moves into bolder improvisations with an unnamed saxophonist and pianist (odd that the label didn't give us this information) – the latter of whom plays some very cool Sun Ra-like electric piano at one point! Hooker is clearly the star of the show, though – and begins with some almost-funky lines, something we've never heard before – then moves into the more familiar mode of improvisation that's made his work on other albums so great over the years. Titles include "Jazz", "Soul", "Hieroglyphics", "Chain Gangs", "Freedom Riders", and "Rastafarian". CD

✨✧ John Lee Hooker & Coast To Coast Blues BandAnywhere Anyplace Anytime ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 1940s/Early 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early recordings by John Lee Hooker and his Coast To Coast Blues Band – recorded in Detroit in the late 40s through the early 50s. The Coast To Coast Blues Band may be a little misleading in the title, as the recordings find Hooker with only the sparest accompaniment on bass, drums, and guitar if any accompaniment at all – but it's the good kind of misleading, because you don't want anything getting in the way of the foot stomping, soulful blues vibe of John Lee Hooker on these early cuts! Anytime-Anytime-Anywhere is filled with that spare, intimate John Lee Hooker blues sound that came to represent so much of the the inner city gin joints of the era – on titles that include "Come Back Baby", "Forgive Me", "Street Is Filled With Women", "Moon Is Rising", "Turnin' Gray Blues", "Lord Taketh My Baby Away", "Throw This Old Dog A Bone", and "Welfare Blues". A killer late 60s Chicago blues set from Earl Hooker – one of his best! Earl is one of the great blues slide guitarists, and his tone is captured so incredibly well here – songs recorded at Chicago's Sound Studios with impeccable players. Earl sings on "Anna Lee" and "You Don't Want Me", does some conversing with Andrew Odom on the great title track. Louis Meyers contributes some great harmonica on "Anna Lee", with Carey Bell on vocals and harmonica on "Love Ain't A Plaything". Geno Skaggs is on bass, Joe Willie Perkins the keys and Levi Warrens on drums. Other songs include "Off The Hook", "You Don't Love Me" and "Earl Hooker Blues". CD

✨✧ John Lee HookerI Feel Good (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jewel/ORG, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Gritty work from John Lee Hooker – a set recorded at the end of the 60s in Paris, at a time when that city was playing host to some of the hippest blues work of the decade! The style here is very much like John Lee Hooker of a decade before – simple, stark, and unadorned – with a slinky, dirty groove at the bottom of most tracks – vamped along by just a bit of bass and drums. The recording quality is a bit better than the old days, but never too slick or commercial – and Hooker's vocals are right out front with a real sense of presence and power. Titles include "I Feel Good", "Baby Baby", "Dazie Mae", "Stand By", "Going Home", and "Looking Back Over My Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Nite-LitersA-Nal-Y-Sis ... CD
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years! ✨✧ VariousChicago Slickers – 1948 to 1953 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Nighthawk, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from the Chicago blues underground – rare tracks pulled from a time before labels like Chess and Vee Jay handled most of the big artists, and talents were spread between a handful of much smaller indies! The music here marks that key Chicago transition from rural to urban – and especially showcases the rise of the electric guitar in the music – often mixed with some heavy lines on piano or harmonica, and recorded in a relatively spare, stripped-down mode – without some of the fuller arrangements that were being added to some of the LA blues recordings of the postwar years. Titles include "Hard Time" and "Early Morning" by Floyd Jones, "I Want My Baby" and "Just Keep Lovin Her' by Little Walter, "A Woman On Every STreet" by Forest City Joe, "DArk Clouds" and "Lonesome Man Blues" by John Brim, "Ramblin" and "Cool Driver" by Johnny Shines, "Train Time" by Delta Joe, "Sweet Angel" by Earl Hooker, "Lonesome Ole Train" by Homesick James, and "Maggie Campbell" by Robert Nighthawk. CD adds in 8 more bonus tracks – work by Man Young, Robert Nighthawk, Grace Brim, Willie Nix, Johnny Shines, and Little Walter. CD

A monster – and one of the best jazz funk albums ever on Prestige! Rusty Bryant blows his top off on this one – taking his tenor stylings out of the more staid R&B mode of earlier years, working with some younger heavy funk jazz players to craft a brilliant album of long searing tunes that's forever been one of the must-haves of the early 70s jazz funk scene! Idris Muhammad's on drums, Wilbert Longmire's on guitar, and the organ work is split between Leon Spencer and Bill Mason, both monstrously great talents, with a propensity for open-stopped hard-wailing playing! Titles include "Fire Eater", "The Hooker", "Mister S", and "Free At Last". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1971/1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 2-in-1 killer that features some of the funkiest work ever from Rusty Bryant! First up is the legendary Fire Eater album – one of the best jazz funk albums ever on Prestige! Wild Fire is very much in the style of his Fire Eater classic, as you might guess from the title! The tracks here are all long, open, and rock-solid – held firmly in place by some incredible drums from Idris Muhammad – and featuring a group that includes Jimmy Ponder on guitar, plus the little-heard Bill Mason on organ – a player who recorded briefly for the Eastbound label, and who also handled the Hammond chores on Rufus Harley's funky album! Rusty's tenor is great, as always – really opening up with this younger generation – and titles include "If You Really Love Me", "Wildfire", "Alobamo Kid", and a version of "Riders on the Storm", of all things!
