Crown Heights AffairDo It Your Way (with bonus tracks) ... CD
De-Lite/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $13.99
A record that ended up in more than a few 70s record collections because of its sexy cover image – but a set that's even better when you get down into the grooves – thanks to massively funky work from Crown Heights Affair! The group are wonderful here – upbeat and quick-stepping, but still filled with razor-sharp funk energy – at a level that's similar to Brass Construction or BT Express – with no fluff at all, and none of the kind of too-extended sloppy musicianship you were getting from the studio disco groups. The whole thing's got a rock-solid vibe that was first forged in the funky 45 generation, then kicked up for the 12" years – including the group's harmony vocals, which still have a great indie vibe. Titles include "Sexy Ways", "Dancin", "Far Out", "Music Is The World", "Love Me", and "Searching For Love". Also includes the nice funky funky "French Way", which has some great moogy parts! CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Dancin (special 12" disco mix)", and original single mixes of "Dancin", "Love Me", and "Far Out". CD

Crown Heights AffairSure Shot (with bonus tracks) ... CD
De-Lite/Octave (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $13.99
A smooth later groover from Crown Heights Affair – a lot more 80s sounding than the group's classic work, but in a way that's actually totally great! CHA were never shy of hitting a mainstream sound – and early in the group's career, they traded harder funk for smoother disco – making a move that suited them well in later years. This set's got a brilliant sheen that really works wonderful for the group – tight production from Bert DeCoteaux in a style that's almost an update of earlier Philly modes – mature and sophisticated on the vocals and use of strings, but also with a funkier undercurrent at the bottom to keep with a New York De-Lite kind of sound. Titles include "You Gave Me Love", "Sure Shot", "I Don't Want To Change You", "You've Been Gone", "Use Your Body & Soul", and "Tell Me You Love Me". CD features three bonus tracks – 7" single mixes of "Sure Shot", "You've Been Gone", and "You Gave Me Love". CD

Freddi Henchi & The SoulsettersCrown Princes Of Funk – The Last Set (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Wind Hit, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
Fantastic funk from Freddi Henchi & The Soulsetters – an incredible group who've got an energy level to rival Sly & The Family Stone at their best – but with a deeper groove that seems to pick up a bit of Hendrix energy in the mix, then deliver the whole thing with the rawness of a funky 45! The collection is a real treasure – rare singles issued on a number of different labels, brought together with full notes that tell the group's story – all in a package that's as beautiful as the music! This is the sort of set that makes you love soul and funk reissues – and it's overflowing with 21 tracks that include "Under Pressure", "Piranha", "Mr Funky", "I Like Funky Music", "Popcorn Baby", "Come Down", "Biscuits & Buttermilk", and "Soul Train". Also features a bonus video from 1975! CD

Crown, 1960. Very Good- ... $6.99
Massive later music from Coleman Hawkins – a date that might be easy to overlook, given the unassuming package – but one that really features that newfound mix of modernism and soul that graced the later years of Hawk! The setting is a bit unusual, but that's part of the charm – as Hawkins' tenor comes into play with the trumpet of Thad Jones, piano and vibes of Eddie Costa, bass of George Duvivier, and drums of Osie Johnson – a group who are mostly easygoing, and really let Coleman take the lead – although Jones gets in a few great moments too! Titles include "Cloudy", "Almost Dawn", "Stake Out", "Cross Town", and "Shadows". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel LegrandThomas Crown Affair ... LP
United Artists, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks of the 60s – and a crowning moment of international fame for French composer Michel Legrand! Legrand already had plenty of records under his belt by the time he scored this great film – a heist movie with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway – and he brings all that experience to bear in his music here – with sounds that run from jazzy groovers to bossa instrumentals to a few vocal numbers that are completely sublime, and which show his music works equally well in English as it does in French! Noel Harrison sings the landmark "Windmills Of Your Mind", and Legrand himself sings on the killer "His Eyes Her Eyes" – both of which get instrumental versions as well – and other instrumental tracks include "The Chess Game", "Playing The Field", "The Boston Wrangler", "Doubting Thomas", "The Crowning Touch", and "Room Service". Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandSerpent's Mouth ... LP
Big Crown, 2018. New Copy ... $18.99 24.98
Funky genius from a mighty unique group – one who've drunk deep on the classic steel band sounds of the 70s, but who've also refined that groove with a contemporary funk approach too! The group's the brainchild of Bjorn Wagner – who you might know from The Mighty Mocambos – and the sound here is every bit as well-crafted as that combo, but with the difference of steel drums in the mix! The drums provide most of the melodic elements, while the funky backings kick things up nicely – all at a level that's maybe even funkier than some of the best funky steel drum albums of the 70s – especially across the space of the entire album. Titles include "Xxplosive", "Touchdown", "Burn", "Real Hot", "Hoola Hoop", "1 Thing", "Crockett Theme", "Bocas Del Dragon", "Bushfire", and "I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

BrainstoryBuck (clear with yellow & purple splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Crown, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
A funky trio with a really unique sort of vibe – vocals that are somewhere in the sweet soul territory of the early 70s, set to spacious instrumentation that's got some nicely trippy touches! The core lineup features guitar, bass, and drums next to the harmonized vocals of Kevin and Tony Martin – but Leon "El" Michels produced the set, and also adds in a bit of keyboards – and the whole record really benefits from the open-ended sound he can bring to an affair of this nature! Things are never overdone, and these guys never try to sound too forcedly soulful – really finding the best qualities in their vocals, and reminding us that sometimes the right fit is the most important thing of all. Titles include "Beautyful Beauti", "Mnemophobia", "Sorry", "Reclaim", "Dead End", and "Breathe". LP, Vinyl record album

Conte CandoliLittle Band Big Jazz (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $22.99
An incredible record – and the kind of rare LA bop session that got totally lost because it was never packaged properly! This obscure set was issued by the Crown label under a number of names – both the Conte Candoli All Stars and Vince Guaraldi – and the group includes Conte Candoli, Buddy Collette, Vince Guaraldi, Leroy Vinnegar, and Stan Levey – all playing with a fantastically tight and incredibly soulful bop groove, of the sort you always hear them credited for, but which you can never find on any of their snoozy more famous records. Vince Guaraldi plays some incredibly soulful piano, in a manner that's very different than his Fantasy recordings – and he's playing here with a killer group of LA players who deliver some of their finest recorded work! Trust us, the session's a gem – and it's one of those you can put on and surprise your friends, and yourself! Tracks include "Muggin The Minor", "Mambo Diane", "Macedonia", and "Little David". CD

A really cool bit of bossa jazz from reedman Buddy Collette – an artist who's not as well associated with the genre as Stan Getz or Paul Desmond – but who really cooks nicely here! The setting is relatively lean and groovy – with guitar from Howard Roberts, bass from Mel Pollan, and percussion from Leo Acosta and Darias – both of whom bring a nice sort of west coast vibe to the set, one that's different from some of the Verve bossa modes of the time. Jim Helms handled the arrangements, with a nice airy sort of mode – and Buddy plays both tenor and flute, on titles that include "Nao Pode Ser", "Porque De Moras", "A Pele Do Marfin", "A Meie Noite", "Samba Da Tartaruga", and "Amor Levado". An excellent set by the same group that served up the Moreno Veloso album Musical Typewriter – led here by drummer Domenico, but featuring Moreno on vocals and other instrumentation, plus the mighty Kassin – who really emerges here as one of the freshest talents in Brazilian music for the 21st Century! The album's even better than Musical Typewriter – quite complicated, with a blend of electronics and gentle acoustic instrumentation, touched up with a few funky rhythms in spots, but not too much so that it gets in the way of the great vocals. El Michels AffairAdult Themes ... CD
Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
A really different groove from El Michels Affair – but one that reminds us again that the group is really amazing at just about anything they ever try to do! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. CD

El Michels AffairSounding Out The City ... LP
Truth & Soul/Big Crown, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 20.98
Easily one of the greatest new funk records of the 21st Century – and a set that goes way beyond some of the cliches that are currently gripping others in the deep funk underground! El Michels Affair have a cool, easygoing style to their music – one that's as much 70s jazz as it is 60s funk – and which makes for tunes that have a looser structure overall, which allows much more room for instrumental interplay, and the kind of sweet surprises that make the album so great! These guys have a real penchant for an unusual rhythm and interesting instrumental flair – and they borrow as much from 70s soundtracks and Latin albums as they do from the funky 45 era that clearly gave them their start. Totally fresh all the way through, and a record that delights us a lot more than we might have expected! Titles include "Detroit Twice", "El Pueblo Unido", "Behind The Blue Curtains", "Ocho Rios", "Hung Up On My Baby", "This Song's For You", and "Slide Show". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Crown, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 16.99
We've loved the music of Lee Fields for many many years – but these days, he seems to be sounding even better than ever – taking all of his decades of experience in soul music, and blending his deep soul roots with an even more mature, open sort of style! And even though Lee's early work was great, we never would have imagined the greatness he can hit with a record like this – a set that draws on so many currents of classic soul, but finds a way to make a statement that's totally personal, totally original, and totally out of sight all the way through! Fields has a fantastic raspy vocal style, but he never just lets that stand as his calling card – because he's really bringing new inflections, new inspirations to the music – all while working with superb backing from Leon Michels and The Expressions. If you can imagine Hi Records mixed with James Brown mixed with New Jersey soul mixed with Daptone mixed with The Impressions – then you've only got part of the multi-faceted genius of this set. Titles include "Two Faces", "You're What's Needed In My Life", "Love Prisoner", "Will I Get Off Easy", "It Rains Love", "Love Is The Answer", "A Promise Is A Promise", and "Blessed With The Best". CD features the bonus track "Don't Give Up" – and 2CD version features a full bonus album of instrumentals by Leon Michels and the group! CD

Way more than the cheapo fad record you might guess from the title – thanks to some wonderfully soulful tenor from Joe Houston! The setting's almost more Latin than limbo – a mode that really works perfectly with Houston's horn – driving the big-toned sound strongly right up from the bottom – and letting Joe have some nice freedom to stretch out with solos over the top! Given that Houston was already mixing Chicano elements with his R&B groove in the 50s, the approach is a natural – as you'll hear on "Limbo Organ", "Limbo Lou", "Out On A Limbo", "La La Limbo", "Limbo Stick", and "Rockin The Limbo". Jimmy SmithDon Gardner Trio Featuring Jimmy Smith & Bill Davis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), Late 50s. New Copy ... $22.99
An early moment of greatness for Jimmy Smith – an album that features his young, raw Hammond in the combo of Don Gardner – with a groove that's part jazz, part soul, and part R&B! The Smith of this era bears much more of a link to some of the first organ jazzers of the 50s – players like Wild Bill Davis or even Count Basie – especially given that most of these cuts are short and vamping, with less of the longer solos you'd hear on Jimmy's early Blue Note work. According to the title, Bill's also featured on some of these tracks – but as usual with Crown, the notes aren't great – so it's a bit hard to tell what's what. We can say, though, that the whole thing is mighty nice – rough-edged early soul jazz, with lots of cool twists and turns on the Hammond, guitar, and tenor! Titles include "Hands Off", "Hobo", "Paradise Found", "You Feel It", "More Soul", "Good Rockin", and "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie". CD

Crown, 1962. Very Good+ ... $8.99
The title's kind of an obvious overstatement – but it's also a great illustration of the simple and straightforward nature of the album – a set that's got a sound that's far rootsier than you might expect from its date – and which almost makes us feel like we're hearing Roosevelt at work in the back room of a small club on the south side of Chicago! The piano used on most tracks is nicely bluesy and almost out of tune – a quality that underscores the sadder tones in Sykes' vocals here, especially on the mellower and more late nite numbers. Instrumentation is relatively spare – with just a bit of slushbucket drums and bass – and titles include "Out On A Limb", "Honey Child", "Slave For Your Love", "Wild Side", "Last Chance", "Casual Friend", "Hupe Dupe So", and "Your Will Is Mine". A really fantastic full length set from Bobby Oroza – a moody take on blue-eyed soul, with a vibe that's completely its own! Oroza has some fantastic help here – production and music by Cold Diamond & Mink, the combo who've given such a fantastic sound to Timmion Records soul singles over the years! Bobby's got a sweet soul style that's already great – but it really takes off here in the company of the Finnish musicians – who also recorded the whole set with Bobby at the Timmion studios, which makes the whole thing sort of a joint project between the two creative forces! The lean, sinister quality we always love in Cold Diamond & Mink's music really helps shape the sound of the vocals – and Bobby himself also plays guitar and organ on the record. A really fantastic album from the legendary Lee Fields – a set that blows us away every bit as much as his stellar My World album! Like that set, this one's got kind of a moody early 70s vibe – almost a New Jersey soul approach at times, but tinged with more southern modes – mixed with bits of Lee's more familiar funk at others – but often with this moody, almost mellow vibe that's such a fresh take on the territory that Fields has been exploring for years! Lee's lost none of the deep soul elements in his vocals, but there's a shift in arranging styles that's really great – and superbly delivered by the Expressions – a subtle darkness that shows why Fields is really one of the true greats out there in the contemporary funk underground – a true soul singer who's never content to just rest on the laurels of previous success. Titles include "Let Him In", "Lover Man", "Make This World", "How I Like It", "Special Night", "I'm Coming Home", and "Where Is The Love". CD

Crown/Kent, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An obscure session that was nearly lost, because it was issued on a cheapo label – but great work from Coleman Hawkins! The format is small combo, with long tracks that really open up – and Hawk is blowing in that fantastic mode that he began to use a lot around the end of the 50s. His tone is incredible – at once deep and soulful, but also touched with some raspiness and a bit of a biting reed approach – almost a bit of Sonny Rollins at times, with a sound that really makes us want to listen to more work from this fruitful (and overlooked) time in Hawk's career! Players include Thad Jones, Eddie Costa, George Duvivier, and Osie Johsnon – and titles include "Bean In Orbit", "Stalkin", "Moodsville", and "Hassle". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorites ever cut by Tex-Mex soulsters Sunny & The Sunliners – largely because it's got some really nice funk tracks! The album features a set of all English language tracks – with Sunny Ozuna singing in his best sweet soul style on the ballad tracks, and hitting a raw raw groove on the harder-hitting numbers, really nailing the groove on both fronts. One of the highlights of the album is actually an instrumental reading of "Soul Power" – done with a nice chunky groove – and other great tracks include sweet harmony readings of "Together" and "Cross My Heart", plus the upbeat tunes "Boogaloo Down Broadway" and "Hip Huggin Minnie". Big Crown, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". Two rare grooves from this legendary group! Jimi Tenor adds guests flute in a few spots – and tracks include "Bobby's Mood", "Your Love Is Too Cold", "Keep On Believing", "Maybe Maybe Maybe", "This Love", "Down On My Knees", and "There Can Be No Love". A totally cool little record – and one that was so rare, it was initially only pressed up to give to the singers and performers who worked on its grooves! The music here is all from a talent show in Brooklyn, circa 1968 – headed by the Youth In Action charity, and filled with very strong performances by soulful, youthful talents right from the streets! The whole thing's got a very raw feel – like the funkiest of the funky 45s from the time – and the recording is also live, with an audience that's getting pretty darn wild as the set moves on. Tracks mix great group soul performances with gritty funk and soul instrumentation – and tracks include "I Want To Be Sweeter To You" by The United Souls, "Love Makes A Woman" by Carla & The Carlettes, "I Wish It Would Rain" by Channels 4, "Come & Get These Memories" by Sharon Seabrook & The Starlettes, "Cowboys To Girls" by The Destinations, and "Thrillers Band" by The Thrillers Band. West coast r&b, doo wop and all around fantastic numbers from the mid 50s to the dawn of the 60s – fantastic stuff from Tony Allen – not the Afrobeat legend, but the unjustly overlooked singer! Tony had a bunch of excellent singles on the important r&b labels of the day, but never really hit a stride that carried him into the mainstream. It's as good as the better known r&b and proto rock of the day, and this CD is a wonderful introduction to a singer we haven't been well enough acquainted with! Includes tunes cut for labels such as Specialty, Ebb, Crown, Modern, Kent & Ultra – rollicking solo numbers and others with group backing by the Chimes, The Champs, The Night Owls and The Wanders. 26 tracks in all with several previously unissued! The spare format is great – open in ways that always seem to bring out the best phrasing in Bosso's horn, but with just the right moments of groove that have the trumpet and organ dancing together nicely – almost a newly-conceived variation on the the older 60s pairing of tenor and Hammond! Mario Biondi provides guest vocals on a remake of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other instrumental tunes include "Sermonette", "Cold Duck Time", "Bernie's Toon", "I Shall Wear A Crown", "Forward", "A Lullaby", and "Say It Loud". A pair of late albums from Jefferson Airplane – issued here in a single set, with new remastering too! First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Strings figure into most of the backings, with almost a Scott Walker sense of depth – and titles include "Tiny Sparrow", "I Love My Man", "Johnny", "Half A Crown", "Just A Ribbon", "If You Love Me", "The Love We Never Knew",a nd "Ballinderrie". An excellent collection of rare soul groovers – one of those UK packages that are put together as a memory of their own great Northern Soul scene, but which has equal appeal to any fan of rare and unusual American soul! The set list is great – and there's maybe a nicely wider range of styles here than on the kind of Northern Soul sets that follow in a stricter Detroit-inspired style – as there's echoes of funk, some key 70s numbers, and even a few British tracks that sit wonderfully next to the US songs. The set's divided up into two modes – CD1 features 28 60s Northern Soul tracks, and CD2 features 21 numbers from the 70s – titles that include "Bok To Bach" by Father's Angels, "You Baby" by Jackie Trent, "Pick Up My Toys & Go Home" by The Devonnes, "Baby You've Got Me" by The Sapphires, "When Love Slips Away" by Margo & The Marvettes, "That's What Mama Say" by Leonard Whiting, "Check It Baby" by Willie & The Mighty Magnificents, "Stop What You're Doing" by The Playthings, "Ain't No Soul Left In These Ol Shoes" by Kenny Bernard, "Ain't Nothin But A Houseparty" by The Show Stoppers, "Gonna Fix You Good" by Alan Bown Set, "The Real Thing" by Kim Davis, "Ton Of Dynamite" by Frankie Crocker, "Beautiful Summers Day" by Mother Freedom Band, "Dreaming A Dream" by Crown Heights Affair, "On The Real Side" by Larry Saunders, "Something Fishy Is Going On" by Universal Mind, "Forget That Girl" by Jeannie Napoli, "I Got The Need" by The Moments, "My Man Is On The Way" by Rhetta Young, "Beautiful Woman" by Derek Martin, "It Really Hurts Me Girl" by The Carstairs, "I Want To Give You My Everything" by Carl Douglas, "Country Girl" by Soul Train Gang, "Gee Baby" by The Festivals, "You're My One Weakness Girl" by Street People, "In The Bottle" by Brother To Brother, and "I Wanna Give You Tomorrow" by Benny Troy. VariousModern Vocal Groups Vol 1 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1950s. Used ... $5.99
A huge discovery in vocal group material from the 50s – served up in this excellent series of tracks from the vaults of LA's Modern Records label! Most folks associate the early vocal group sounds with the east coast or Chicago scenes of the postwar years – but there was also plenty of harmonizing and doo wop on the west coast, too – although sometimes not as well-exposed as the bigger hits back east! This series really corrects that mistake – and serves up a stunning wealth of work from the early Cali scene – tracks recorded by the Modern Records label, a company with a rich legacy in jump blues, R&B, and other hip postwar styles – all of which they brought to play on their recordings in a vocal group mode. The Modern approach often has some wonderful arrangements that further empower the vocals – a harder swing that gives the singers the same push as some of the label's solo acts – and as usual for Ace Records, this collection moves way past the hits, to include some unreleased tracks, and rare singles from the Modern, RPM, Crown, and Flair labels. Volume 1 features 24 tracks in all – with titles that include "Native Girl" by The Native Boys, "Love Only You" by The Meadowlarks, "Sacroilliac Swing" by The Drifters, "I Wanna Love" by Arthur Lee Maye & The Crowns, "You Better Stop" by The Original Jubalaires, "Be Cool My Heart" by Oscar McLollie & His Honey Jumpers, "Let Me Be Your Man" by The Five Hearts, "Forever" by Marvin Phillips & The Barons, and "Tell Me You Love Me" by The Flairs. The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Sealed ... $6.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Jocelyn BrownOne From The Heart (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1987. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.98
A classic groover from Jocelyn Brown – presented here in a 2CD set that's overflowing with remixes! One From The Heart was a big mainstream moment for Jocelyn Brown – the crowning realization of all the great work she'd done in the club underground in the early part of the 80s – presented here with a slightly more crossover vibe, but a sound that's still pretty darn great in the end, thanks to Brown's tremendous vocals. Jocelyn's really keeping an older style of female soul alive here – amidst some beats and more programmed rhythms – belting things out with the pipes that first rose her to fame in the disco years, pretty proud and unabashed here. Rhythms are better than usual for a major label record like this – thanks to help from Hubert Eaves and Jellybean – and titles include "Love's Gonna Get You", "Ego Maniac", "True Love", "Caught In The Act", "I Cry Real Tears", and "Living Without Your Love". Bonus CD features 10 more remixes – of "Ego Maniac", "Caught In The Act", and "Love's Gonna Get You". CD

✨✧ Dave BrubeckTime Out ... CD
Columbia, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks". Maybe the crowning achievement of DJ Cash Money – a sharp DJ from the early Philly scene – and a talent who was every bit as great at the time on as Jazzy Jeff on the wheels of steel! Cash is paired here with Marvelous, an MC whose sense of wit really matches the sharpness of the production on the record – and the album's a classic from a time when the indie underground was starting to burst out again with strong full length albums like this! There's plenty of deft, playful rhymes on the set – and titles include "Find An Ugly Woman", "Play It Kool", "Is It Real", "Time Is Up", "A Real Mutha For Ya", "Marvelous' Drawers", "Ugly People Be Quiet (rmx)", "Ugly People Be Quiet", "The Mighty Hard Rocker", and "The Music Maker". One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Epic, 1979. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Earth Wind & FireSpirit/That's The Way Of The World (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Columbia/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of classics from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirit – a big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! That's The Way Of The World may be Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD

Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. Atco, 1967. Very Good ... $3.99
One of the coolest concepts for a record in the 60s – and a set that's the first, and maybe crowning achievement of Vanilla Fudge! The set's mighty trippy – and often offers up very weird, fuzzy remakes of songs that were more mainstream hits for other artists in the 60s – tunes by The Beatles, Zombies, Impressions, and others – taken into really weird new territory by the group's jamming fuzz guitar, stark rhythms, and dark sensibilities. Genius Shadow Morton produced and directed the whole thing – which is one of his crowning achievements, and a great commentary on some of the more mainstream pop he was producing at the time. Titles include "Illusions Of My Childhood", "Eleanor Rigby", "Ticket To Ride", "Bang Bang", "She's Not There", "Take Me For A Little While", and "You Keep Me Hanging On". LP, Vinyl record album
