Jeri SouthernAt The Crescendo ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Great proof that Jeri Southern's a hell of a jazz singer in just the right setting – and this album's just the right setting! The set features Jeri live at the Crescendo – working with small group backing at the famous LA nite spot – including piano from Dick Hazard, who also arranges the combo on most tracks too – balancing core piano trio styles with some light cello that really sounds wonderful – used in slight ways to echo larger strings, but still leaving the rest of the group to move in gentle torch jazz modes. Jeri plays piano herself on a few tracks – and titles include "Remind Me", "Blame It On My Youth", "You Better Go Now", "I'm Just A Woman", "I Thought Of You Last Night", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "Dancing On The Ceiling". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing.)

Bosq feat KaletaTake Over (main, less patient edit)/Bounce & Pull Up (white vinyl pressing) ... 12-inch
Ubiquity, 2015. New Copy ... $9.99 10.98
One of the strongest Afro Funk jams we've ever heard from Bosq – but that's no surprise, given that Kaleta is along for the ride! "Take Over" builds beautifully from the start – spare percussion adding in layers over time – all rising in this great crescendo of horns and vocals! The less patient edit is great too – more like a part 2 of the track – and the flipside features the groovy "Bounce & Pull Up" – a percussion-heavy track that really sounds like its name! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Ella FitzgeraldElla In Hollywood ... LP
Verve, 1961. Sealed ... $16.99
A nice little Verve session that breaks from the usual format – especially the "Songbooks" one – and features Ella in LA with small group backing by Jim Hall, Lou Levy, Wilfred Middlebrooks, and Gus Johnson. The set was recorded live at the Crescendo – in a jazzily swinging mode that's a bit looser than some of Ella's other Verve sessions, but which still demonstrates some nice control on the vocals. Titles include "Mr Paganini", "Stairway To The Stars", "Air Mail Special", "Blue Moon", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", and "Just In Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Shrinkwrap has some holes. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Jive Afrika, 1985. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $6.99
2 versions of Masekela's take on Fela's "Lady" with some very 80s electro touches over the afrobeat groove. The 17 minute version of "Coal Train" on the flip side is recorded live, with a long, slow, spare reading until the crescendo at the end. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has light wear and a promo stamp.)

✨✧ Duke EllingtonEllington At Newport ... LP
Columbia, 1956. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums to ever issue recordings made at the Newport Jazz Festival – quite a big hit, and the beginning of a real trend in jazz! The set's also some great work by Duke – free to perform in a setting that's not bound by some of the time restrictions of earlier years, which lets him offer up three long tracks with a great deal of sophistication over previous recordings. Titles include "Jeep's Blues", "Diminuendo & Crescendo In Blue", and "Newport Jazz Festival Suite". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Dave PellI Had The Craziest Dream (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1955/1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mid 50s west coastery from Dave Pell – recording here in an octet that includes Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Ray Sims on trombone, Paul Smith on piano, Tony Rizzi on guitar, and Ronnie Lang on baritone. The tracks are short and slinky, with Pell's sharp tenor in the frontline – on tracks that include "Star Eyes", "I Had The Craziest Dream", "Nap's Dream", "Jazz Wagner", and "Crescendo Date". Great cover – with a Napoleon-like figure blowing a tenor amidst some crazy chicks! CD

VariousTreasure Tunes From The Vault – As Advertised On WLS ... LP
Chess, Early 60s. Very Good ... $1.99
A classic compilation of "oldies", put together back in the day when most of the tunes were only a few years old! The compilation was done by Chess in conjunction with Chicago pop powerhouse station WLS – and it's got a great goofy photo on the front that features all of the young rock DJs at LS in front of a large silver dollar! Titles include "But I Do" by Clarence Henry, "So Fine" by The Fiestas, "A Thousand Stars" by Kathy Young, "Money" by Barrett Strong, "Tonight I Fell In Love" by The Tokens, and "Oh Julie" by The Crescendos. LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has wear and aging.)
