Linn CountyProud Flesh Soothseer ... LP
Mercury, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A fantastically jamming album – one with searing guitar from Fred Walk, who also plays electric sitar – and vocals and organ from Stephen Miller, a very soulful talent! Plus, Larry Easter serves up these cool lines on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – sometimes sounding like they've been electrically processed – on titles that include "Protect & Serve/Bad Things", "Fast Days", "Cave Song", "Moon Food", and "Lower Lemons". ✨✧ Glen CampbellI Am A Lineman For The County – Glen Campbell Sings Jimmy Webb ... CD
Capitol/Ace (UK), Late 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Glen Campbell cut plenty of fantastic songs for Capitol Records – but year after year, some of the best were written by the young Jimmy Webb – an important 60s songwriter who brought magic to a number of different singers, but maybe clicked most strongly with Glen! You'll know the key tracks here, as they represent some of Campbells biggest early hits – but his association with Webb goes way past those few tracks, through a legacy of great 70s recordings that are presented here – in a package that features every single Glen Campbell recording of a Jimmy Webb tune through the start of the 80s – including live material, and even a more obscure track done for Atlantic Records too. The sensitivity of Webb's material is really on full display here – and the whole thing is a great contrast to some of the thinner greatest hits packages of Campbell's material – presented with very detailed notes, lots of great vintage images, and a set list of 23 tracks that include "You Might As Well Smile", "Just This One Time", "I Keep It Hid", "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress", "Galveston", "Didn't We (live)", "In Cars", "Highwayman", "Early Morning Song", "Christian No", "It's A Sin When You Love Somebody", "Adoration", "Wichita Lineman", "Where's The Playground Susie", "I Was Too Busy Loving You", "Just Another Piece Of Paper", and "Ocean In His Eyes". ✨✧ Bobbie GentryGirl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters (Ode To Billie Joe/Delta Sweete/Local Gentry/Touch Em With Love/Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell/Fancy/Patchwork/BBC/bonus tracks) (8CD set) ... CD
Capitol (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 8CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. CD

✨✧ BB KingLive In Cook County Jail ... LP
ABC, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
BB King live at the Cook County Jail in Chicago – and given the amount of great live shows going on in the institution during the early 70s, the jail must have been one hell of a place to be incarcerated! This classic features BB King entertaining the prisoners with a wickedly sharp blues set – done, like most prison live shows, with an edge that's often missing from more conventional concerts – plenty gritty, both on the vocals and guitar, with a sound the Chicago audience must have loved! Titles include "How Blue Can You Get", "Worry Worry", "Sweet Sixteen", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Please Accept My Love", and "Every Day I Have The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy McGriff, George Freeman, Lucky ThompsonFriday The 13th – Cook County Jail ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Gritty gritty gritty! This live set of soul jazz tracks was recorded in Chicago's Cook County Jail on Friday the 13th, 1972 – and we can hardly think of a darker place to record a soul jazz album! Side one features the aptly-named "Freedom Suite", an extended groover played by Jimmy McGriff, and a 2-guitar group that includes George Freeman and Odonel Levy – and side two has Lucky Thompson playing in a soulful group with Cedar Walton on electric piano, on the tracks "Green Dolphin Street" and "Everything Happens To Me". A pretty incredible event to be recorded – trust us, we drive by the jail a fair bit on the way to work! LP, Vinyl record album

Count BasieKansas City Suite – The Music Of Benny Carter ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great little set – despite our initial fears about the package – and a really wonderful pairing of the talents of Count Basie and Benny Carter! We'll admit that we're the first ones to shy away from anything that says "Kansas City" in the title – as we expect a lot of hoke – but this album's a surprisingly great batch of tunes, original numbers written by Benny Carter in honor of the KC of days past, but arranged and performed by the Basie group in a swinging style that's got the best touches of their Roulette years, plus a bit of Ellingtonish ambition in the horn charts. Titles include "Katy Do", "Miss Missouri", "Jackson County Jubilee", "Sunset Glow", "Meetin Time", and "The Wiggle Walk". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono color bar label pressing with deep groove. Cover has large splits on all seams and light surface wear.)

ByrdsBallad Of Easy Rider ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A great one from The Byrds – who deliver an iconic mix of breezy country rock and folk harmonies, over songs that range from laidback to soaring! The Byrds seemed to always be in a state of flux, line-up wise, and that actually seems to bring out a pretty great mix of styles on their best albums. We'd put this one in that category, with titles that includes "Ballad Of Easy Rider", the country funk-flavored "Fido", the effectively tradtional "Jack Tarr The Sailor", "Oil In My Lamp", "Tulsa County", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "It's All Over Now, "Baby Blue", "There Must Be Someone (I Can Turn To)", "Gunga Din", "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" and "Armstrong, Aldrin And Collins". Holy Modal RoundersGood Taste Is Timeless ... LP
Metromedia, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99 34.99
An overlooked gem from The Holy Modal Rounders – the group's fifth album, and a set that shows them moving into a slightly more subtle style than before – but still with plenty of their trademark touches intact! The work often has a sweetly folksy feel – one that conjures up the city-to-country modes of some of the Marin County bands of the time – with some sensitive lyrics and instrumentation, all produced beautifully down in Nashville by the legendary Bob Dorough – who was doing some surprising rock projects around this time. Despite the joke of the title, there actually is a timeless quality to this set – one that might almost make the record a good place to start if you've always been curious about the Rounders, but a bit intimidated by the fame of their earlier classics. Titles include "Black Bottom", "Spring OF 65", "Boobs A Lot", "Alligator Man", "City Blues", "The Whole World Oughta Go On Vacation", and "Melinda". LP, Vinyl record album
(A beautiful original pressing, in the backwards unipak cover, which is in great shape.)

Alexis Korner & SnapeAccidentally Borne In New Orleans ... LP
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
A record that really has Alexis Korner stretching out from the straighter blues of his 60s material – using his fantastic style on a set of tunes that show as much New Orleans influence as you might guess from the title – but also an evolved British roots rock quality too! The group is very interesting – relatively lean, and with loads of saxophone solos from Mel Collins – the reedman who made some early 70s King Crimson albums so great – plus second guitar from Peter Thorup, who also adds a bit of slide, and makes for a strongly guitar-based groove amidst some of the slightly funky rhythms. Titles include "Gospel Ship", "Lo & Behold", "County Shoes", "Don't Change On Me", "Rock Me", and "Sweet Sympathy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label stereo pressing in the textured cover, with light wear and some sticker remnants. Includes the Warner inner sleeve.)

Randy NewmanGood Old Boys ... CD
Reprise, 1974. Used ... $3.99
A gem of an album from Randy Newman – a masterpiece of understated with from the mid 70s, and one of his most fully-conceived records for Warner Brothers! The album offers up a vision of the south, past and present, through Newman's eyes – eyes that are partially clouded by the distance of the scene seen from the vantage point of smoggy LA, but which still manage to pull out various strands of life with surprising poignancy. It's easy to write this one off as some sort of slap against the face of the backward south in the 70s, but Newman actually approaches his subjects with some sort of subtle tenderness – not nearly as mean as you might think on first listen, as evidenced by the beautiful orchestrations he penned for the sessions. Titles include "Birmingham", "Marie", "Rednecks", "Louisiana 1927", "Rollin", "Back On My Feet Again", and "Wedding In Cherokee County". CD

Tom RushTom Rush/Wrong End Of TheRainbow ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A pair of early 70s albums from Tom Rush – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Tom Rush album for Columbia – maybe the biggest album ever from Tom Rush – a set that pushes the singer strongly past his more folksy roots, and seems to set him up for a bigger career in the 70s mainstream! And yet the record's not commercial at all – done with a laidback instrumental style that moves into rock from folk, with occasional rootsy elements, but passages of softer phrasing that really work well with Tom's vocals too. Titles include "Old Man Song", "Livin In The Country", "Driving Wheel", "Rainy Day Man", "Drop Down Mama", and a really great take on "These Days". Wrong End Of The Rainbow is an album that lets Tom Rush bring in a lot more of his own songs than his Columbia Records debut – a great reminder of the early years of his career, when Tom gave the world a few songs that were picked up and redone by some of his key contemporaries! The style moves Rush even more past folk than before – still done with an intimate sense of instrumentation, which includes plenty of acoustic elements – but handled with phrasing that's very different than it would have been in the 60s, as Rush and his generation find a new way to move forward with more mature modes and a stronger sense of variety. Titles include "Starlight", "Jazzman", "Rotunda", "Biloxi", "Merrimac County", "Wrong End Of The Rainbow", and "Gnostic Serenade". CD

Great live work from Mel Torme – a 14 track set that's done with spare backings from the Al Pellegrini Trio – possibly the most stripped-down Torme recording from these early years, delivered with an intimacy that's quite different than some of Mel's work on Bethlehem! Pellegrini plays mostly piano, but also a bit of clarinet too – given that Torme also handles a bit of piano – and the backings are always somewhat light, so that Mel's voice really dominates the proceedings. Titles include "County Fair", "Goody Goody", "You're Driving Me Crazy", "Jeepers Creepers", "Get Happy", "Get Out Of Town", and "From This Moment On". LP, Vinyl record album

Asylum, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
The great early double album from Tom Waits! This is peak Asylum era Waits, getting into that charismatic, drunken bluesy poet mode – essentially working live in the studio with a small audience , giving it a genuine sounding latenight cabaret vibe, and embracing his wit and style as brilliantly as he'd done to this point. Brilliant vintage Waits and a loose, yet nicely rhythmic backing combo. Titles include "Better Off Without A Wife", "Emotional Weather Report", "On A Foggy Night", "Eggs & Sausage", "Spare Parts", "Big Joe & Phantom 309", and "Putnam County". LP, Vinyl record album

Muddy WatersMuddy Waters – The Montreux Years (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BMG, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 32.99
Rare work from Muddy Waters – a set of tracks all recorded overseas, at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival – but during that strong 70s moment when Muddy had really focused his sound, and was reaching out to cross global boundaries and touch a whole new generation with his sound! The Montreux vibe is always one that's very faithful to the artist – audiences at that festival aren't the sort to be given watered-down, commercial pap – and that's definitely the vibe here, as the material resonates with any of Waters' best 70s live material for other labels, with a really great sound, even from the stage. The set features performances from Muddy Waters appearances in 1972, 1974, and 1977 – and titles include "Same Thing", "Howlin Wolf", "Still A Fool", "Trouble No More", "Rock Me Baby", "Long Distance Call", "Mannish Boy", "Nobody Knows Chicago Like I Do", "County Jail", "I'm Ready", "Electric Man", and "Can't Get No Grindin". The performance features some nice extended numbers that seem to go even farther than some of Waters' 60s live work (and definitely his studio sides) – and the very sympathetic group features Pinetop Perkins on piano, Louis Myers on guitar, Mojo Buford on harmonica, and Willie Smith on drums – a lean, laidback combo that leaves plenty of room for Muddy's vocalizations and guitar – as well as some sweet solos from Perkins too. Titles include "Blow Wind Blow", "Clouds In My Heart", "County Jail", "Rollin N Tumblin", "Walkin Through The Park", "Honey Bee", and "Got My Mojo Workin". CD

The set's got a vibe that's up-close, and more tightly produced than just a local live record – really great acoustics that bring out the personal, folksy qualities of the songs – which get strong direction from group leader Bill Camplin on vocals and guitar. The overall vibe is maybe more Marin County or Woodstock than any Midwestern music of the period – and titles include "Jesse's Mountain Range", "The Harvest", "Old Man", "Hold On", "Save The Life Of A Simple Child", "Red Velvet", and "Can A Star Disappear". Titles include "County Fair", "Goody Goody", "You're Driving Me Crazy", "Jeepers Creepers", "Imagination", "Get Happy", "Get Out Of Town", and "From This Moment On". CD 2 features two albums' worth of material – a performance at the Crescendo from 1957 that was issued on the albums Mel Torme At The Crescendo and Songs For Any Taste – done in the same jazzy style as his studio albums for the Bethlehem label from the 50s! The combo behind Mel is a smallish one – Marty Paich on piano and arrangements, Larry Bunker on vibes, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – and the arrangements here all have that great mix of sensitivity and swing that Paich was first showing at the time – an approach that really helped Torme hit new levels in his music! ✨✧ Albert CollinsTrash Talkin' ... LP
Imperial, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic early work from Albert Collins – almost as much of a funk album as a blues one! This set's not really funky in the same sense as many of Collins' contemporaries in the soul scene of the time – but it's got some great funky elements, especially in the drums and guitar, which is always razor-sharp. 12 numbers in all: "Jawing", "Trash Talkin", "Harris County Line-Up", "Conversation With Collins", "Grapeland Gossip", "Chatterbox", "Medley", "Lip Service", "Talking Slim Blues", "Back Yard Back Talk", "Tongue Lashing" and "And Then It Started Raining". ✨✧ Jesse Ed DavisJesse Ed Davis/Ululu ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early solo work by Jesse Ed Davis – two albums in a single set! The self-titled Jesse Ed Davis set is one of a few records as a leader ever issued by the guitarist – a player who worked on countless other albums by big names in the late 60s and early 70s – but who has a very special flavor on his own! Davis is maybe best remembered as an important native American musician on the scene at the time – but his work here stands strongly with that of some of his hipper contemporaries – such as Eric Clapton, Leon Russel, and Gram Parsons – all of whom make an appearance here! Titles include the completely sublime "Golden Sun Goddess", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Tulsa County", "Every Night Is Saturday Night", "Crazy Love", "Reno Street Incident", and "Washita Love Child". Ululu has Jesse working with a number of his famous friends – including Leon Russell and Mac (Dr John) Rebennack – both of whose work the album owes a lot to. Jesse's got a down-home approach to his work – and sings a set of original tunes, plus versions of tracks by Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Levon Helm, and Taj Mahal – which should give you a good idea of his frame of reference. Titles include "White Line Fever", "My Captain", "Sue Me Sue You Blues", "Ululu", "Alcatraz", and "Strawberry Wine". CD

✨✧ Keef Hartley BandSeventy Second Brave ... LP
Deram, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Keef Hartley always keeps things cool, and this album's no exception to that rule – a wicked set of jazz rock numbers with a hard undercurrent of funk! Hartley's drums are great, and really kick most tunes into gear – putting more punch into the tunes than on other albums of this nature, and creating a few nice break moments along the way. Other instrumentation includes tenor, alto, flute, organ, and some very sharp guitar – and although the vocals are a bit bluesy, the rhythms are all pretty groovy! Titles include "Don't You be Long", "Nicturns", "What It Is", "You Say You're Together Now", "Heartbreakin Woman", and "Marin County". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stu Phillips/Tammy Wynette/The WindowsRun Angel Run ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Biker time again – as Stu Phillips lays down a tight little soundtrack for this obscure motorcycle flick from the late 60s! Stu started out as a jazz man, but is best known to us for his very groovy work on the Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls soundtrack. The best cuts on here are Stu's instrumentals – a mixture of funky jazz with a twist, and a bit of funky flute, plus some other numbers that have a well-composed, more serious approach. Highlights include "Friendly Fuzz", which mixes heavy guitars, drums, and flute – and "Rescue", which has a very similar approach – plus the chase-y groover "Get It On". Tammy Wynette sings the title cut "Run Angel Run", and The Windows sing "True Believers", "You're Gonna Get A Piece Of My Mind", and "Love & Admiration Of The Brotherhood Society Of South Napa County". Also includes "Oversexed" – a nice mellow tune with a misleading title. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mel TormeMy Kind Of Music ... LP
Verve, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Mel's best albums of jazz vocals! The record was cut in London, with work by arrangers Geoff Love, Tony Osborne, and Wally Stott – and it's got a wonderfully full quality that works perfectly with the vocals of "The Velvet Fog". Stott's best known as the arranger for Scott Walker's solo work – and although this stuff isn't as totally baroque as Scott's work, it's still got an approach to arrangements that is somewhat in the same vein. Includes a driving version of "You & The Night & The Music", Mel's own country-story "County Fair", and a number of tracks from The Bandwagon, including "I Guess I'll Have To Change My Plan", "By Myself", and "Dancing In The Dark". ✨✧ Porter WagonerRubber Room – The Haunting Poetic Songs Of Porter Wagoner 1966 to 1977 ... CD
RCA/Omni (Australia), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The most left-of-center collection of cuts from rhinestone studded honky tonk purist Porter Wagoner – some of the darkest and strangest tunes pulled from his most adventurous RCA LPs! Porter is eternally true to a genuine honky tonk aesthetic – but his arrangements are never predictable – bringing in some chilling strings and a backing vocal wail, walloping drums and wacka wacka electric guitars chugging underneath the steel. This is his most lyrically troubled batch of tunes from the era, but they're often done with a wink and a nod that lets you know he's just telling a story (or is he?) – not unlike Lee Hazlewood. Oddball country groove from a character that should be as fondly regarded as his more scenester friendly peers! 29 tracks in all: "Out Of The Silence (Came A Song)", "The Rubber Room", "Cassie", "Bones", "Lonelyville", "First Mrs Jones", "The Cold Hard Facts Of Life", "Shopworn", "Julie", "Carroll County Accident", "Wino", "He's Alone Again Tonight", "My Last Two Tens", "The Party" featuring Dolly Parton, "Moments Of Meditation" and more. CD

✨✧ Wilson McKinleySpirit Of Elijah ... LP
Voice Of Elijah, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An obscure bit of Christian rock from the Seattle scene at the start of the 70s – but a record that's got a lot more to offer than just that unusual pedigree! Don't think "Jesus rock", think instead of some of the more laidback, open-minded singer/songwriter material of the Bay Area scene – especially Marin County, with its elements of rootsy instrumentation and warmly collaborative spirit in the musicianship – a perfect fit for the gently spiritual messages of Wilson McKinley, which are mostly aimed at living a good life with a clear conscience. Production is lean, but in a great way – and the strength of the music's spirit comes through wonderfully on cuts that include "Crown Of Glory", "All My Life", "Tree Of Life", "One In The Spirit", and "It's Up To You". Tompkins Square, 1920s/1930s. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing portrait of America between the wars – served up over dozens of vintage 78rpm recordings – all based around themes of daily life mentioned in the title! The collection is an incredible historical document – pulled mostly from the collection of Louisville 78 collector Don Wahle, and remastered and re-presented beautifully by the folks at Tompkins Square – who not only sort the songs into key categories, but also provide a wealth of notes and images to further illuminate the tunes! There's a number of tracks on here that have never been reissued before, mixed with others that are still plenty darn rare – and the package features 42 tracks that include "Climbing The Golden Stairs" by Happy Four, "Oh Declare His Glory" by McDonald Quartette, "Fourth Of July At The County Fair" by Bill Chitwood, "Tennessee Coon Hunt" by Whit Gaydon, "Hide Away" by Oscar Ford, "Poor Man Rich Man" by David McCarn, "Driving Saw Logs On The Plover" by Pierre La Dieu, and "Flat Wheel Train Blues (parts 1 & 2)" by Red Gay & Jack Wellman. A fantastic love letter to the great Townes Van Zandt – a set that features unreleased material from his genius stretch in the early 70s! The songs here include two new songs, variations on five others by Townes, and some surprising remakes – all done in a very stripped-down mode, with a vibe that's in keeping with his first few classic albums. And despite the fact that these are lost recordings, the sound quality is excellent – beautifully resonant presentation of the amazing vocals and subtle guitar – on tracks that include "Rex's Blues", "All I Need", "The Hills Of Roane County", "Sky Blue", "Blue Ridge Mountains (smoky version)", "Pancho & Lefty", "Silver Ship Of Andilar", "Last Thing On My Mind", and "Dream Spider". ✨✧ Bennie WallaceArt Of The Saxophone ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's definitely an art to the way that Bennie Wallace handles the saxophone – a style that's schooled in all the best references from the old days, but cast in some fresher, sharper tones as well! It's clear that Bennie's got plenty of love for Coleman Hawkins in his tenor, but also reaches forward to a host of other influences as well – and the arrangements can be quite compelling, especially on some of the more modern moments that come from Wallace's original compositions. Players include John Scofield on guitar, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – and titles include "Thangs", "Edith Head", "Rhythm Head", "Monroe County Moon", and "All Too Soon". CD

✨✧ VariousJon Savage's 1972 to 1976 – All Our Times Have Come ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Writer Jon Savage is maybe best known for his work on the early years of punk in England – and here, Savage steps back just a bit – to contextualize the rise of the new music in all sorts of other styles that were bubbling up in the mid 70s! Part of the set is a pathway to punk – especially on some of the glam and power pop cuts that clearly point the way ahead – but there's also a nice mix of hard rock, a bit of prog, and even some catchier numbers that really fit the feel of the package – and show what a wonderful mix of modes was taking place in the mid 70s – a great wake up call to anyone who thinks that things were dead until punk came along! The 2CD package is overflowing with surprises – 44 tracks, with notes from Savage as well – for titles that include "So Far" by Faust, "Hey Joe (version)" by Patti Smith, "Kings Of Speed" by Hawkwind, "Third Uncle" by Brian Eno, "After Eight" by Neu, "Easy To Slip" by Little Feat, "Girl From Germany" by Sparks, "End Unkind" by Grin, "Andy Warhol" by Dana Gillespie, "Yang Yang" by Yoko Ono, "Vicious" by Lou Reed, "She Means A Lot To Me" by Smyle, "When My Baby's Beside Me" by Big Star, "One Of The Boys" by Mott The Hoople, "Max's Kansas City 76 (part 1)" by Wayne County, "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways, "Train Train" by Count Bishops, "I Don't Mind" by Dr Feelgood, "Slow Death" by Flamin Groovies, and "You Really Got Me" by Hammersmith Gorillas.
