Glen CampbellI Am A Lineman For The County – Glen Campbell Sings Jimmy Webb ... CD
Capitol/Ace (UK), Late 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Glen Campbell cut plenty of fantastic songs for Capitol Records – but year after year, some of the best were written by the young Jimmy Webb – an important 60s songwriter who brought magic to a number of different singers, but maybe clicked most strongly with Glen! You'll know the key tracks here, as they represent some of Campbells biggest early hits – but his association with Webb goes way past those few tracks, through a legacy of great 70s recordings that are presented here – in a package that features every single Glen Campbell recording of a Jimmy Webb tune through the start of the 80s – including live material, and even a more obscure track done for Atlantic Records too. The sensitivity of Webb's material is really on full display here – and the whole thing is a great contrast to some of the thinner greatest hits packages of Campbell's material – presented with very detailed notes, lots of great vintage images, and a set list of 23 tracks that include "You Might As Well Smile", "Just This One Time", "I Keep It Hid", "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress", "Galveston", "Didn't We (live)", "In Cars", "Highwayman", "Early Morning Song", "Christian No", "It's A Sin When You Love Somebody", "Adoration", "Wichita Lineman", "Where's The Playground Susie", "I Was Too Busy Loving You", "Just Another Piece Of Paper", and "Ocean In His Eyes". Bobbie GentryGirl From Chickasaw County – The Complete Capitol Masters (Ode To Billie Joe/Delta Sweete/Local Gentry/Touch Em With Love/Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell/Fancy/Patchwork/BBC/bonus tracks) (8CD set) ... CD
Capitol (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 8CDs ... $109.99 129.99
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. CD

BB King live at the Cook County Jail in Chicago – and given the amount of great live shows going on in the institution during the early 70s, the jail must have been one hell of a place to be incarcerated! This classic features BB King entertaining the prisoners with a wickedly sharp blues set – done, like most prison live shows, with an edge that's often missing from more conventional concerts – plenty gritty, both on the vocals and guitar, with a sound the Chicago audience must have loved! ✨✧ Virgil AndersonOn The Tennessee Line ... LP
County/Mississippi, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record that sounds as ancient as the appearance of its cover – and even though the set was originally released in 1980, it feels more like a Folkways Records release of Appalachian music from the postwar years! Virgil Anderson plays banjo and sings in this fantastic voice – with a style that's not unlike the famous recordings of Roscoe Holcomb, although Anderson also plays a bit of guitar at points. Production is nice and lean, and titles include "Muskrat", "Bed Bug Blues", "You Been Gone So Long", "Wild Bill Jones", "Miner's Dream", "Wild Goose Chase", and "Jenny Hang The Kettle On". BelairRelax – You're Soaking In It ... LP
Belby Wetterman/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
Belair is a combo led by guitarist Michael Belair – who works here with a very cool California group, in a style that's different than some of the other work of his generation! The feel is definitely 70s, but the style echoes older gypsy swing – an acoustic mode served up with additional guitar from Tucker Crosby next to Michael's electric, plus flute and saxes from Frederic Wetterau, and really strong use of violin by David Balakrishan – all in this laidback jazzy groove that also has plenty of Marin County vibes in the mix too – almost as if these guys were jamming at some small club in Fairfax with Jerry in the audience, soaking it up! Titles include the jazz dance groover "Samba For A Cold Warrior", plus "Caffeine"," Morning Rainwalk", "Debby Duck", "Money Isn't Everything", and "Somethin's Cookin". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic early work from Albert Collins – almost as much of a funk album as a blues one! This set's not really funky in the same sense as many of Collins' contemporaries in the soul scene of the time – but it's got some great funky elements, especially in the drums and guitar, which is always razor-sharp. 12 numbers in all: "Jawing", "Trash Talkin", "Harris County Line-Up", "Conversation With Collins", "Grapeland Gossip", "Chatterbox", "Medley", "Lip Service", "Talking Slim Blues", "Back Yard Back Talk", "Tongue Lashing" and "And Then It Started Raining". VariousCold Wave #1 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2021. Used ... $18.99
A great collection of work from the contemporary cold wave underground – a strong global movement in recent years that's been inspired by the more experimental styles of the post-punk years, yet have found a way to take the music even further! There's plenty of influence here from the electronic sounds of Manchester, Sheffield, and other UK scenes at the start of the 80s – plus the German new wave too – but unlike some of those acts at the time, who were soon moving into catchier, more commercial modes – these artists are committed to keeping things "cold", and going for the stark qualities you'd find in early work from Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and other acts of that nature – before they started cleaning things up. Some of the tracks also echo the funkier side of Throbbing Gristle – but all of these artists bring plenty of their own sound to bear, as you'll hear on titles that include "Kannibal" by Kriedler, "Of Course I'm A Liar" by Violent Quand On Aim, "Wayne County Stomp" by Fit Siegel, "Reflexion Ocean" by Carcass Identity, "Capture" by Dissemblance, "Standhouden" by De Ambassade, "Approdo" by Wang Inc, "Gammut" by Moisture, "Ninos Matores" by Krikor Kouchian, and "Fight Or Flight" by Celine Gillain. VariousSoul & Songs Of Young Curtis Mayfield – The Spirit Of Chicago (2024 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Vee Jay/Craft, Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99
A grea overview of the early work of Curtis Mayfield – a set that not only includes some key cuts he recorded with The Impressions, but also a number of songs that Curtis penned for Jerry Butler after he left that group – as well as some other Mayfield tunes that hit big for other singers on the Vee Jay label too! Most of the work here is from the years before Mayfield and The Impressions rose to greater fame on the ABC label – and there's a nicely unified quality to the work, despite the variety of artists – a testament to the strong in-house treatment Vee Jay gave their singers. Impressions tunes include "A New Love", "That You Love Me", "Let Me Know", "Young Lover", "At The County Fair", "For Your Precious Love", and "The Gift Of Love". Jerry Butler tunes include "Aware Of Love", "I'm The One", "A Woman With Soul", "I Found A Love", "He Will Break Your Heart", "Find Another Girl", "Thanks To You", and "When Trouble Calls". Also includes "At The Party" and "Devil In Your Soul" by Wade Flemons, "Rainbow" and "Man's Temptation" by Gene Chandler, and "Just Be True" and "It's All Right" by Jerry Butler & Betty Everett. Reprise/Rhino, 1974. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A gem of an album from Randy Newman – a masterpiece of understated with from the mid 70s, and one of his most fully-conceived records for Warner Brothers! The album offers up a vision of the south, past and present, through Newman's eyes – eyes that are partially clouded by the distance of the scene seen from the vantage point of smoggy LA, but which still manage to pull out various strands of life with surprising poignancy. It's easy to write this one off as some sort of slap against the face of the backward south in the 70s, but Newman actually approaches his subjects with some sort of subtle tenderness – not nearly as mean as you might think on first listen, as evidenced by the beautiful orchestrations he penned for the sessions. Titles include "Birmingham", "Marie", "Rednecks", "Louisiana 1927", "Rollin", "Back On My Feet Again", and "Wedding In Cherokee County". A superb second album from modern Brit folk combo Starless & Bible Black – starry, atmospheric elements that build into insistent, unshakable songs – fronted beautifully by vocalist Helene Gautier. We were caught of guard by how addictive the melodies are on this album – and the overall sound is textured, deep and anything but simple. Voice and guitars at the center of most insistent moments, but a lot more tripped out elements in the mix, acoustic and electric. It's hard to imagine we'll hear a more rewarding modern folk rock oriented album than this one for quite a while. A pretty great record from one of the coolest school teachers you could ever hope to have – the lovely Miss Rita Abrams, a hippie who was teaching in Marin County at the start of the 70s! The set's a project done by Abrams with her fourth grade class – a set that mostly features original tunes penned by Rita, filled with joy, hope, and the sort of optimism that characterized the Marin County scene of the post-Haight years – and performed with a cool blend of acoustic instrumentation next to Abrams keyboards – with some larger arrangements from Ed Bogas, who'd later work on hip soundtracks for Fantasy Records, across the Bay. There's nothing hokey about the set at all – as the tunes are great, and the kid-quality of the vocals is really kept to a minimum – more used to underscore the warmth in Rita's lead, and surprisingly never cloying at all – a lot like some of the best singer/songwriter projects on Reprise at the time, especially given Rita's cool electric keyboards. Titles include the cool single "Mill Valley" – plus "Floating Away", "Wonder", "Building A Heaven On Earth", "Running In The Green Grass", "Sweet Summertime", and "I Never Asked". CD includes 3 bonus tracks: "Sad Night", "Happiest Day Of My Life" and "America, Let's Get Started Again". CD

✨✧ Tom WaitsNighthawks At The Diner ... LP
Asylum, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The great early double album from Tom Waits! This is peak Asylum era Waits, getting into that charismatic, drunken bluesy poet mode – essentially working live in the studio with a small audience , giving it a genuine sounding latenight cabaret vibe, and embracing his wit and style as brilliantly as he'd done to this point. Brilliant vintage Waits and a loose, yet nicely rhythmic backing combo. Titles include "Better Off Without A Wife", "Emotional Weather Report", "On A Foggy Night", "Eggs & Sausage", "Spare Parts", "Big Joe & Phantom 309", and "Putnam County". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Muddy WatersMuddy Waters – The Montreux Years (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BMG, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from Muddy Waters – a set of tracks all recorded overseas, at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival – but during that strong 70s moment when Muddy had really focused his sound, and was reaching out to cross global boundaries and touch a whole new generation with his sound! The Montreux vibe is always one that's very faithful to the artist – audiences at that festival aren't the sort to be given watered-down, commercial pap – and that's definitely the vibe here, as the material resonates with any of Waters' best 70s live material for other labels, with a really great sound, even from the stage. The set features performances from Muddy Waters appearances in 1972, 1974, and 1977 – and titles include "Same Thing", "Howlin Wolf", "Still A Fool", "Trouble No More", "Rock Me Baby", "Long Distance Call", "Mannish Boy", "Nobody Knows Chicago Like I Do", "County Jail", "I'm Ready", "Electric Man", and "Can't Get No Grindin". Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Lux and Ivy have given us plenty of great music in plenty of great styles – but the duo are probably closest to the raw spirit of the early rockabilly years – a sound that was instrumental in their music as The Cramps! Here, the duo dig through some of their favorite rare singles from way way back – the kind of obscure cuts that even go past some of the better-done European compilations in recent decades – and which remind us that Lux and Ivy were out in the field digging for rare records back in the early 70s – when some of these impossible-to-find numbers might still have been around. As with other titles in this series, the scope of subject matter is great, and the tunes are plenty wild – 52 tracks that include "Date On The Corner" by Don Feger, "Bip Bop Boom" by Mickey Hawks, "Sweet Rockin Mama" by The Hi Tombs, "Don't Bug Me Baby" by Milton Allen, "Did We Have A Party" by Billy Brown, "Chicken Rock" by Fat Daddy Holmes, "Blast Off" by Alden Holloway, "Lonely" by Bobby McDowell, "Here Kitty Kitty" by Jimmy Murphy, "I'm A Madman" by Willie Ward & The Warblers, and "Woodpecker Rock" by Nat County & The Braves. ✨✧ Jesse Ed DavisJesse Ed Davis/Ululu ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early solo work by Jesse Ed Davis – two albums in a single set! The self-titled Jesse Ed Davis set is one of a few records as a leader ever issued by the guitarist – a player who worked on countless other albums by big names in the late 60s and early 70s – but who has a very special flavor on his own! Davis is maybe best remembered as an important native American musician on the scene at the time – but his work here stands strongly with that of some of his hipper contemporaries – such as Eric Clapton, Leon Russel, and Gram Parsons – all of whom make an appearance here! Titles include the completely sublime "Golden Sun Goddess", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Tulsa County", "Every Night Is Saturday Night", "Crazy Love", "Reno Street Incident", and "Washita Love Child". Ululu has Jesse working with a number of his famous friends – including Leon Russell and Mac (Dr John) Rebennack – both of whose work the album owes a lot to. Jesse's got a down-home approach to his work – and sings a set of original tunes, plus versions of tracks by Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Levon Helm, and Taj Mahal – which should give you a good idea of his frame of reference. Titles include "White Line Fever", "My Captain", "Sue Me Sue You Blues", "Ululu", "Alcatraz", and "Strawberry Wine". CD

✨✧ Tom RushTom Rush/Wrong End Of TheRainbow ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of early 70s albums from Tom Rush – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Tom Rush album for Columbia – maybe the biggest album ever from Tom Rush – a set that pushes the singer strongly past his more folksy roots, and seems to set him up for a bigger career in the 70s mainstream! And yet the record's not commercial at all – done with a laidback instrumental style that moves into rock from folk, with occasional rootsy elements, but passages of softer phrasing that really work well with Tom's vocals too. Titles include "Old Man Song", "Livin In The Country", "Driving Wheel", "Rainy Day Man", "Drop Down Mama", and a really great take on "These Days". Wrong End Of The Rainbow is an album that lets Tom Rush bring in a lot more of his own songs than his Columbia Records debut – a great reminder of the early years of his career, when Tom gave the world a few songs that were picked up and redone by some of his key contemporaries! The style moves Rush even more past folk than before – still done with an intimate sense of instrumentation, which includes plenty of acoustic elements – but handled with phrasing that's very different than it would have been in the 60s, as Rush and his generation find a new way to move forward with more mature modes and a stronger sense of variety. Titles include "Starlight", "Jazzman", "Rotunda", "Biloxi", "Merrimac County", "Wrong End Of The Rainbow", and "Gnostic Serenade". CD

✨✧ SeatrainWatch ... LP
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the most classic albums from Seatrain – and a set that definitely shows their huge progression from roots in The Blues Project, to their transformation into more of a roots rock band on the Marin County scene! In a way, the record's almost a west coast take on territory The Band were hitting at the time – maybe looser and groovier overall, with well-crafted lyrics from Jim Roberts and singer Andy Kulberg – whose raspy style is completely charming. Titles include "Northcoast", "Scratch", "We Are Your Children Too", and "Pack Of Fools" – but we think our favorite might be the excellent instrumental "Flute Thing" – a remake of an Al Kooper tune, performed by the group with a mix of funky flute, organ, and fuzzy guitar – which makes the whole thing a very sweet jazzy groove! ✨✧ Mel TormeRecorded At The Crescendo December 15, 1954 ... LP
Coral, 1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great live work from Mel Torme – a 14 track set that's done with spare backings from the Al Pellegrini Trio – possibly the most stripped-down Torme recording from these early years, delivered with an intimacy that's quite different than some of Mel's work on Bethlehem! Pellegrini plays mostly piano, but also a bit of clarinet too – given that Torme also handles a bit of piano – and the backings are always somewhat light, so that Mel's voice really dominates the proceedings. Titles include "County Fair", "Goody Goody", "You're Driving Me Crazy", "Jeepers Creepers", "Get Happy", "Get Out Of Town", and "From This Moment On". LP, Vinyl record album
