✨✧ Gloria BarnesUptown ... LP
Maple/Remined, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the few rare albums on the Maple label – a 70s imprint that's known for some incredible funk and soul! Despite the title, the set's a record that sounds a lot more down-home than uptown – thanks to hard-wailing vocals from Gloria Barnes herself, and a nicely rough-edged quality to the instrumentation overall – supposedly handled by Lee Moses and The Ohio Players – the latter of whom wrote a few of the songs too! The album's one of the few on Maple – and in a way, it's almost a female soul counterpart to the Lee Moses record on the same label – done in a similar mix of rootsy modes and east coast indie soul – occasionally sweet at points, but mostly deep soul overall. Titles include "Gotta Get Away", "I Found Myself", "Old Before My Time", "I'll Go All The Way", "She Wants A Stand In", and "You Don't Mean It". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Elton Dean Quartet/EDQThey All Be On This Old Road (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most striking work we've heard from all the players in the group – and that's really saying a lot, given how many stunning records they gave us back in the 70s! The music here is wonderfully free and improvised, but also has a way of focusing on a specific element too – sometimes the piano pulsations of Keith Tippett, sometimes the very organic bass work of Chris Laurence, or the soulful alto sax work of Elton Dean, or intuitive percussion of Louis Moholo! The qualities are a bit hard to describe in words, but there's a vibe to the set that really shows why key players of the British 70s scene were often so different than their European counterparts – this mix of humanism and instrumental progressivism, sometimes a bit warmer than at other points – but balanced with freer flights of creativity. Titles include "Naima", "Dede Bup Bup", "Overdoing It", "Not Too Much", and "Nancy". CD features in four unissued bonus tracks, the most striking of the bunch – "Edeeupub", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Attic", and "Echoes". CD

✨✧ Joel RossNublues (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 2024. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99 38.99
The music of vibist Joel Ross just keeps getting better and better with each new release – and on this set, he showcases a strong balance of sounds – really able to push the edges at some points, while also managing a soulful swing at others too! There's some key work on the album from labelmate Immanuel Wilkins, whose alto sax has a sharpness that's a great counterpart to the warmer, more chromatic elements from Ross' vibes – and other members of the core group include Kanoa Mendenhall on bass, Jeremy Corren on piano, and Jeremy Dutton on drums – mostly working together throughout, although joined by the flute of Gabrielle Garo on a few tracks too. Titles include great remakes of the Coltrane tunes "Equinox" and "Central Park West", plus the originals "Early", "Nublues", "Mellowdee", "Chant", "Ya Know", and "What Am I Waiting For". ✨✧ Kenji Mori QuartetFire Bird ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kenji Mori may be the firebird on tenor and flute for the date – but the album also features some mighty bold lines on guitar from the young Kazumi Watanabe! Kazumi's got a dynamic sense of energy that really shapes the record from the start – these long, twangy electric passages that find a way to be fierce one minute, gentle the next – almost phrased at points as if he was holding a reed instrument instead of a stringed one! Mori's lines on flute are an especially great counterpart to the guitar – shapes in sound that really have an organic quality as they spin out. The group also features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – and titles include the long tunes "Firebird (parts 1 & 2)", "K&J", and "A Time For Us". CD
(Part of the Three Blind Mice Supreme Collection!)
