✨✧ Carrie LucasCarrie Lucas – The Solar & Constellation Albums (Simply Carrie/Street Corner Symphony/In Danceland/Portrait Of Carrie/Still In Love/Horsin Around) (3CD set) ... CD
Solar/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978/1979/1980/1982/1984. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work from Carrie Lucas – one of the biggest stars of the legendary Solar Records during the late 70s – a really sweet-voiced singer, best known for her catchy dancefloor groovers! At one level, Carrie was a west coast disco diva who rivaled the strengths of New York singers on some of the smaller labels – but at another level, Carrie had a style that was steeped in older traditions of female soul – almost an update of some of the sweeter sounds of the 60s, into a more modern and sophisticated (and danceable) idiom. The work here is a bit New York club and catchy than the LA soul of other Solar artists of the time – and the rhythms are often full and upbeat, touched with strutting, stepping instrumentation to get the groove going right away! But given that the set features six full albums, there's also a lot more depth, too – and the whole thing features the records Simply Carrie, Street Corner Symphony, In Danceland, Portrait Of Carrie, Still In Love, and Horsin Around – all in a box set, with a huge booklet of notes. 47 tracks in all! ✨✧ CollageShine The Light ... LP
Constellation, 1985. Sealed ... $9.99
Fantastic funky soul from the prime years of the jheri curl scene on the west coast – served up by a group who are maybe a more electro-styled combo than their labelmates The Whispers and Lakeside! Collage are even heavier on the basslines and keyboards than on the previous record – really going for that special Cali take on street soul modes that were first bubbling up on the east coast – maybe classing things up a bit, especially with the kind of strengths the Solar/Constellation label brings to the table! Titles include their classic "Romeo Where's Juliet" – plus "Kickin It", "Winners & Losers", "Shine The Light", "In the Mix", and "Here & Now". LP, Vinyl record album

Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Four – Memphis ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. The record's got a very special sound – in the same "beyond jazz" territory of recent gems from the International Anthem label – and the group also features guest work from Steve Swell on trombone and Ryan White on vibes. Titles include "Wild Fire Bare", "Piddling", "Shoes Of Gold", "Fit To Be Tied", "As Far As The Eye Can See", "Trail Of The Smiling Sphinx", and "How Bright They Shine". CD

Constellation/Universal, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic set from this big 80s group – and given the work that must have gone into the doos on the cover of this one, it's no surprise Klymaxx are in the Ladies Room – most likely still waiting for their hair to dry! The album's a batch of tightly-crafted mid 80s crossover soul – as much pop as it is the kind of female group material you might guess from the time, with keyboards and electric percussion dominating most of the grooves, so that the vocals slide right into the straightest, catchiest approach for the tunes! Titles include "Lock & Key", "The Men All Pause", "Video Kid", "Ask Me No Questions", "Love Bandit", "I Betcha", "I Miss You", and "Just Our Luck". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Red GarlandGarland Of Red ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1956. Used ... $8.99
Simple and soulful elegance from the great Red Garland – prime mid-50s material for Prestige, recorded here with incredible backing from Paul Chambers and Art Taylor! The tightness of the trio is amazing – but never so much so that it gets in the way of Red's warmly introspective modes on the keys – a sound that's never overindulgent, nor as flowery as some of his mainstream contemporaries – and which really paves the way towards a rhythmic sensitivity that influenced generations of later players on the instrument. The tracks are a bit shorter than on some later Garland dates, but that shortness only further illustrates the sublime economy of the group. Titles include "What Is This Thing Called Love", "September In The Rain", "Constellation", "My Romance", "Blue Red", "A Foggy Day", and "Makin Whoopee". CD

There's a nice mix of keyboards on the set – acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keys – used in small combo modes that move between upbeat groovers, jazz dance numbers, and a few mellower moments – a really well-rounded record that also has some nice guitar work in the group too! ✨✧ Sonny StittStitt Plays Bird ... LP
Atlantic, 1963. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
After years of staying free of comparisons with Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt steps confidently into a set of compositions by the late, great one – sounding really wonderful in his own interpretations of these classics! The album's got the same simple and focused still as Stitt's best work on Roost – and although the compositions are all by Bird, the overall sound is still very much Sonny's own – especially given the wonderful sense of space and timing brought to some of the performances! The group's an unusual one, especially for Stitt – and features John Lewis on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Richard Davis on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – all offering a slightly more modern take on Bird than might be expected – especially through the angular lines on Hall's guitar. ✨✧ Alexander Hawkins & Tomeka ReidShards & Constellations ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's a great one – a very apt description of the sorts of sounds created by the improvising duo of Tomeka Reid on cello and Alexander Hawkins on piano – as the performance has this sharp, stark approach at times – jagged sounds from either instrument, almost as bursts of spontaneity – but constellated together to form a beautiful progression of music! The work is maybe a great illustration of that way that, taken as a snapshot, free improvisation might seem like nonsense – but taken as a whole, there's an intrinsic logic that really holds together the creative magic between two very imaginative performers like this duo. Reid maybe has more of an edge than usual, and Hawkins' work on piano really lives up to the best legacy of the Intakt label – on titles that include "If Becomes Is", "Albert Ayler", "A Guess That Deepens", "Shards & Constellations", "Danced Together", and "Strange Familiar".
