Carrie LucasCarrie Lucas – The Solar & Constellation Albums (Simply Carrie/Street Corner Symphony/In Danceland/Portrait Of Carrie/Still In Love/Horsin Around) (3CD set) ... CD
Solar/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978/1979/1980/1982/1984. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
A huge collection of work from Carrie Lucas – one of the biggest stars of the legendary Solar Records during the late 70s – a really sweet-voiced singer, best known for her catchy dancefloor groovers! At one level, Carrie was a west coast disco diva who rivaled the strengths of New York singers on some of the smaller labels – but at another level, Carrie had a style that was steeped in older traditions of female soul – almost an update of some of the sweeter sounds of the 60s, into a more modern and sophisticated (and danceable) idiom. The work here is a bit New York club and catchy than the LA soul of other Solar artists of the time – and the rhythms are often full and upbeat, touched with strutting, stepping instrumentation to get the groove going right away! But given that the set features six full albums, there's also a lot more depth, too – and the whole thing features the records Simply Carrie, Street Corner Symphony, In Danceland, Portrait Of Carrie, Still In Love, and Horsin Around – all in a box set, with a huge booklet of notes. 47 tracks in all! ✨✧ Sonny StittConstellation (Muse) ... CD
Cobblestone/Muse, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A return to basics after Sonny Stitt's late 60s Varitone and funk experiments – all-bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, but there's also a fluidity to the rhythm section that makes it a bit different too – a sound that's warm, open, and soulful – creating a space into which Stitt settles nicely and blows like mad. There's no gimmicks at all, just solid classic jazz skills – and titles include "Casbah", "Constellation", "By Accident", "Webb City", and "Topsy". CD

CollageShine The Light (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Constellation/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... $22.99
Fantastic funky soul from the prime years of the jheri curl scene on the west coast – served up by a group who are maybe a more electro-styled combo than their labelmates The Whispers and Lakeside! Collage are even heavier on the basslines and keyboards than on the previous record – really going for that special Cali take on street soul modes that were first bubbling up on the east coast – maybe classing things up a bit, especially with the kind of strengths the Solar/Constellation label brings to the table! Titles include their classic "Romeo Where's Juliet" – plus "Kickin It", "Winners & Losers", "Shine The Light", "In the Mix", and "Here & Now". CD features bonus tracks – "Romeo Where's Juliet (12" radio)", "Romeo Where's Juliet (12" dub)", and "Winners & Losers (single)". CD

✨✧ Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Four – Memphis ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. The record's got a very special sound – in the same "beyond jazz" territory of recent gems from the International Anthem label – and the group also features guest work from Steve Swell on trombone and Ryan White on vibes. Titles include "Wild Fire Bare", "Piddling", "Shoes Of Gold", "Fit To Be Tied", "As Far As The Eye Can See", "Trail Of The Smiling Sphinx", and "How Bright They Shine". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Link DavisBig Mamou ... CD
Okeh/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $15.99 26.99
Link Davis is holding a saxophone on the cover, but he's also a hell of a fiddler too – and this huge collection of his music follows a strong shift in his style over the course of the 50s – from a rootsy cajun musician to one that's got more of a rocking vibe overall! The package brings together rare Okeh and Starday Records singles from Link – material produced by two top country talents of the 50s, Don Law and Pappy Dailey – with a quality level that makes each individual tune really sparkle, and sound great here together as a constellation of overlooked gems from the time! There's plenty of shift between Louisiana and east Texas modes in the music – and titles include "Sixteen Chicks", "Big Mamou", "Time Will Tell", "Hey Garcon", "Rice & Gravy Blues", "Bayou Buffalo", "Trucker From Tennessee", "Slippin & Slidin Sometimes", "Big Coonie", "Grasshopper Rock", "Would You Be Waiting", and "The Crawfish Crawl". Gemelli/Loneos Editions (Italy), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
A sound library album from the Italian 70s scene – but one that's more like a jazz record overall, given that it's the product of musician Sandro Brugnolini, working under an assumed name – a cat who gave the world plenty of great jazz records in his day! There's a nice mix of keyboards on the set – acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keys – used in small combo modes that move between upbeat groovers, jazz dance numbers, and a few mellower moments – a really well-rounded record that also has some nice guitar work in the group too! Titles include "Frilioni", "Alta Vegetazione", "Topgrafie", "Sugar's Bread", "Quorum", "Veline", and "Constellation's Colours". LP, Vinyl record album

Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
A killer compilation of late 60s & 70s tunes by Peruvian cumbia combo Los Destellos – leaning on the psychedelia inspired sounds from their earlier years! The sound is rooted in cumbia rhythms and electric guitar – but it nimble and spindly of heavily fuzzed out – with a more varied Latin instrumental ensemble mode that deftly layers in elements of psych beat, garage rock and other hard grooving styles. 20 tracks on 2LPs, including "Guajira Sicodelica", "Natalia", "La Fatidica", "Frenetica Guajira", "Pasion Oriental", "El Oasis", "Constellation", "A Patricia", "Boogaloo De Los Destellos", "El Marcianito", "Linda Chiquilina", "Cumbia Del Desierto", "Volando Alto" and more. Sun RaMedia Dream ... LP
Saturn/Art Yard (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Incredible work from one of Sun Ra's most enigmatic periods! The album was recorded in Italy in 1978, right around the same time as "Disco 2000" (and not too far off from Languidity) – and it features Ra playing around with lots of cool spacey keyboards, in a spare cosmic style that's really out of this world! The overall sound is incredible – with an incredible sense of otherness that has Ra pushing the limits of the moog and organ to a level never heard before on record – and in a way, the set is everything you might have imagined when you first heard of Sun Ra as some strange jazz musician who claimed to be from outer space! The group is a quartet, with Michael Ray on trumpet, John Gilmore on tenor, and Luqman Ali on drums – and titles include "Saturn Research", "Media Dreams", "Year Of The Sun", "Constellation", and the haunting straight jazz piece "Twigs At Twilight". ✨✧ Beach BoysPet Sounds (original master recording SACD) ... CD
Capitol/Mobile Fidelity, 1966. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". CD

A beautiful 100th Birthday tribute to the legendary altoist Charlie Parker – a special set that recreates the feel of some of his first important recordings – sides done in the mid 40s for the Savoy label, originally issued in LP form on very limited 10" albums! The early Bird 10" releases are impossible to find on vinyl – and are maybe reproduced here in a form that's even better than the original – with great vinyl, newly restored and remastered audio, and a quality level that's not nearly as likely to split and fall apart as the vintage versions. The box also features a big booklet of notes and other information – plus rare photos, ephemera, and other Charlie Parker material – and the whole thing's a great treasure from the early years of bop! Four full albums – all volumes of New Sounds In Modern Music with Charlie Parker in the lead, plus work from Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie on trumpets. ✨✧ Sonny StittStitt Plays Bird (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
After years of staying free of comparisons with Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt steps confidently into a set of compositions by the late, great one – sounding really wonderful in his own interpretations of these classics! The album's got the same simple and focused still as Stitt's best work on Roost – and although the compositions are all by Bird, the overall sound is still very much Sonny's own – especially given the wonderful sense of space and timing brought to some of the performances! The group's an unusual one, especially for Stitt – and features John Lewis on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Richard Davis on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – all offering a slightly more modern take on Bird than might be expected – especially through the angular lines on Hall's guitar. Titles include "Ko Ko", "Confirmation", "Ornithology", "Parker's Mood", "Au Privave", and "Constellation". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Now's The Time" and "Yardbird Suite". CD

Alexander Hawkins & Tomeka ReidShards & Constellations ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
The title's a great one – a very apt description of the sorts of sounds created by the improvising duo of Tomeka Reid on cello and Alexander Hawkins on piano – as the performance has this sharp, stark approach at times – jagged sounds from either instrument, almost as bursts of spontaneity – but constellated together to form a beautiful progression of music! The work is maybe a great illustration of that way that, taken as a snapshot, free improvisation might seem like nonsense – but taken as a whole, there's an intrinsic logic that really holds together the creative magic between two very imaginative performers like this duo. Reid maybe has more of an edge than usual, and Hawkins' work on piano really lives up to the best legacy of the Intakt label – on titles that include "If Becomes Is", "Albert Ayler", "A Guess That Deepens", "Shards & Constellations", "Danced Together", and "Strange Familiar". ✨✧ Dwight Trible & The Life Force TrioLove Is The Answer (plus bonus instrumentals) ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2005. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soul jazz vocalist Dwight Trible gathers the forces for this magnificent effort – an album pairing his emotionally rich vocals and singular spirit with a group of largely west coast allstars – and it's pure genius! The Life Force Trio, from what we can tell, is simply the moniker for a small army of free thinking guests from the deep funk, hip hop and turntablist underground assembled by Carlos Nino of Ammon Contact. The guest list includes SA-RA, J Dilla, Madlib, Daedelus, Scienze Of Life, Nate Morgan, Dwight's Build An Ark fellows and many others. It features some vocals Dwight has laid down for other albums, and some unreleased recordings – how they pair up so intricately well, with such fresh and varied production is a beautiful mystery. This record could have merely served as an interesting exercise in combined talents, but instead it absolutely soars, and could be remembered as Dwight's masterpiece! It may also be one of the best Ninja Tune albums ever! Tracks include "Equipoise" feat SA-RA, "Freedom Dance", "The Rhythm", "Waves Of Infinite Harmony", a fresh take on Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", "Love Is The Answer", "I Was Born On Planet Rock", "Constellations" feat Super Nova, "Celestial Blues" and more. The CD also includes a bonus disc on instrumentals! CD
