✨✧ Sonny StittTune-Up/Constellation – Endgame Brilliance ... CD
Cobblestone/32 Jazz, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early 70s magic from Sonny Stitt – two albums recorded in 1972 for the Cobblestone label! First up is Tune Up – a great one from Stitt's post-Prestige years, and a real back-to-basics effort that recalls the genius of his work on Roost! The format is straight and simple – Stitt's tenor and alto fronting a quartet that includes Barry Harris, Sam Jones, and Alan Dawson – all playing in a way that puts Sonny in command on all tracks, blowing with an amazing tone that makes us want to throw away all his funk, organ, and electric outings, and just concentrate on these straight acoustic sides. Stitt has a way of blowing the reed like he's got his whole mouth moving into the sax – an earthy, human, and personal feel that first came out strongly in his work during the late 50s, but which has grown even more by this point – even if you couldn't hear the development on other sets. And given our love of funk and electric sides, we're honestly surprised we find ourselves championing a record like this from the early 70s – but it's a great one, and not to be missed if you remotely dig Stitt! Titles include "Tune Up", "Idaho", "Just Friends", "Groovin High", and "Blues For Prez & Bird". Constellation is all bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, but there's also a fluidity to the rhythm section that makes it a bit different too – a sound that's warm, open, and soulful – creating a space into which Stitt settles nicely and blows like mad. There's no gimmicks at all, just solid classic jazz skills – and titles include "Casbah", "Constellation", "By Accident", "Webb City", and "Topsy". CD

Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter One – Gens De Couleur Libre (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2011. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
Powerful, fiercely creative material from alto sax and clarinet player Matana Roberts and her excellent group – the first chapter of what's purportedly to be 12-part project – and given the strength of this first set, we have no doubt that such a long journey will be worth every step! Matana's work in Chicago with Sticks & Stones and with other area jazz scene players has been nothing but impressive, but we'll say flat out that this set, recorded live in Montreal, is the best of her work we've heard to date and is surely going the get better as the project goes on. She's exploring the history of African American music – from folk traditions to free jazz – we could write a couple thousand words about the layers that go into this work and not do it justice. From dense, intense free jazz to delicate beauty. Players include David Ryshpan on piano & organ, Nicolas Caloia on cell, Marie Davidson on violin, Lisa Gamble on saw, Ellwood Epps on trumpet, Brian Lipson on bass trumpet, Fred Bazil on tenor sax, David Payant on drums & vibes, he voice of Gitanjali Jain and others. Includes "Rise", "Pov Piti", "Song For Eulalie", "Kersaia", "Libation For Mr Brown: Bid Em In", "Lulla/Bye", "I Am" and "How Much Would You Cost?". CD

Bill WolferWolf (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Constellation/Octave (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A rare set of blue-eyed soul from the early 80s – recorded by Bill Wolfer, singer and keyboardist who'd worked heavily with Stevie Wonder in the late 70s, and also a bit with the Jacksons in the early 80s. Wolfer's one of the only white artists to record for the mega-hit Solar label in LA – and this album has a great sound that's somewhere between the work of other Solar artists, and the work that Stevie Wonder was doing at the end of the 70s. Titles include "Call Me", "So Shy", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Nobody Knows", "Soaring", "Wake Up", "Pop Quiz", and "Camouflage". CD features lots of bonus tracks – including "Love Games", "9000 Problems", "Call Me (orig single)", "You Are One Sunny Day", "The Hard Way", "I Will Get To You", "Little Miss Lover", and "Adam & Eve". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration (4LP set) ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. Sealed 4LP ... $54.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". ✨✧ Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1966. Used ... $3.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". Includes Mono and Stereo mixes of the whole album! CD

Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Astral Spirits, 2022. New Copy ... $15.99 20.00
There's definitely a sense of concentric orbits taking place here – these long-spun lines that have a nicely cyclical quality – not always as straight in terms of rhythms, but with a pulsating energy that really has both players in constellation with each other! Rob Clearfield plays piano and Quin Kirchner plays percussion – and although the music goes a bit outside at points, the tracks still have this nicely structured sensibility – blocks of sound from both players, pushing past conventional rhythmic modes, yet still finding a way to groove! The album features two side-long tracks – "Orbit 1" and "Orbit 2". LP, Vinyl record album

Def Jux, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 28.99 On October 14, 2022
The highly anticipated solo album from Def Jux CEO and Company Flow vet El-Producto is all that and a bucket of black hole warp speed 9 intensity. Excellent, dark, space age, new millennial hip hop.. This album flows from many songs without breaks between them, with jagged, scattered beats and lush synth-scapes. At points it sounds very cinematic, yet very grounded in thick, pounding break beats. The whole thing is produced by El-P himself, with Rhyme Sayer Entertainment's DJ Abilities on all the scratching, with many Def Jux guests like Aesop, Lif, CamuTao, and Vast. Ill Bill, C Rayz Walz, Rob Sonic, and Cage also make appearances. Songs include "Deep Space 9mm" with the raw Rawkus dis, "Tuned Mass Damper" with awesome scream samples, "Dead Disnee", "Delorean", the biting "Stepfather Factory", "Lazerfaces' Warning", "Constellation Funk" and more! 3LPs! Fantastic work from Abiodun Oyewole – best known as one of the founding members of the legendary Last Poets – but a singer who works here with a contemporary crispness that goes way beyond his roots! The message in Abiodun's older recordings is still alive and well here – in part because the challenges continue, making his themes more important now than ever – updated with elements taken from 21st century soul, jazz, and even a bit of hip hop on the production tip – with contributions from other artists who include Ada De Poet, J Ivy, Jessica Care Moore, and Taylor Pace. Yet it's clear that Abiodun is the star at the center of the constellation – really sounding as important here as ever, at a level that maybe makes this record so much more crucial than some of the Last Poets revival projects of years past. TenseiConstellate Instrumentals ... LP
Tokyo Dawn, 2019. Sealed ... $13.99
A great title for this record from Tensei – as the Chicago duo really find a way to create a strong constellation in sound, by opening the door to help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its title, too – with this swirling blend of funk and soul, all given sort of a special twist through the record's impeccable production – which never leaves anything out there to sound too obvious, or too derivative – as the sonic space of the record shifts between instrumental contributions from Makaya McCraven on drums, Greg Spero on Fender Rhodes, and Junius Paul on bass. The instrumentals version really works as a standalone set, focused on the cosmic soul-jazz-hip hop atmosphere, but keeping the worldless backing vocals in the mix in spots giving it such a heavenly vibe – not unlike Makaya's work in that regard. A really lovely album from trumpeter Quentin Coaxum – a player we really loved on his debut, but who's grown tremendously as a writer and leader since that time! Coaxum's working here in a mode that's very well-arranged, but still nicely loose and open – this soulful flow that really marks the progression of tracks in a mighty nice way – in a lineup that includes the leader's own solos on trumpet, glowing next to work from Dustin Laurenzi on tenor, Julius Tucker on bass, Cliff Wallace on drums, Andrew Vogt and Joshua Griffin on bass, and Jeff Swanson and Anders Nordstrom on guitars. There's a gentle glow to the whole thing – very unified, thanks in part to the richness of Quentin's trumpet lines – but also with a certain spirit as the group works through shorter tracks that clearly are meant to resonate as a larger whole. Three giants of the Chicago improvised scene, coming together here in an album that recalls the best early recordings from the AACM! There's this open, collaborative spirit going on here – music that moves between structure and freedom, and which stands as a testament to the instant rapport between all three players – trumpet from Wadada Leo Smith, reeds from Douglas Ewart, and drums and percussion from Mike Reed – the last of whom often seems to let his elders set the tone, then find a way to make his own special contributions – at that level that continues to make Reed such a vital part of any group he engages with. Had Delmark issued this album in 1971, it would have gone on to become a classic – but it's an even greater feather in the cap of Astral Spirits – who do a great job here with presentation.
