Carrie LucasCarrie Lucas – The Solar & Constellation Albums (Simply Carrie/Street Corner Symphony/In Danceland/Portrait Of Carrie/Still In Love/Horsin Around) (3CD set) ... CD
Solar/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978/1979/1980/1982/1984. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
A huge collection of work from Carrie Lucas – one of the biggest stars of the legendary Solar Records during the late 70s – a really sweet-voiced singer, best known for her catchy dancefloor groovers! At one level, Carrie was a west coast disco diva who rivaled the strengths of New York singers on some of the smaller labels – but at another level, Carrie had a style that was steeped in older traditions of female soul – almost an update of some of the sweeter sounds of the 60s, into a more modern and sophisticated (and danceable) idiom. The work here is a bit New York club and catchy than the LA soul of other Solar artists of the time – and the rhythms are often full and upbeat, touched with strutting, stepping instrumentation to get the groove going right away! But given that the set features six full albums, there's also a lot more depth, too – and the whole thing features the records Simply Carrie, Street Corner Symphony, In Danceland, Portrait Of Carrie, Still In Love, and Horsin Around – all in a box set, with a huge booklet of notes. 47 tracks in all! Sonny StittConstellation (Muse) ... CD
Cobblestone/Muse, 1972. Used ... $18.99
A return to basics after Sonny Stitt's late 60s Varitone and funk experiments – all-bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, but there's also a fluidity to the rhythm section that makes it a bit different too – a sound that's warm, open, and soulful – creating a space into which Stitt settles nicely and blows like mad. There's no gimmicks at all, just solid classic jazz skills – and titles include "Casbah", "Constellation", "By Accident", "Webb City", and "Topsy". CD

✨✧ CollageShine The Light ... LP
Constellation, 1985. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Fantastic funky soul from the prime years of the jheri curl scene on the west coast – served up by a group who are maybe a more electro-styled combo than their labelmates The Whispers and Lakeside! Collage are even heavier on the basslines and keyboards than on the previous record – really going for that special Cali take on street soul modes that were first bubbling up on the east coast – maybe classing things up a bit, especially with the kind of strengths the Solar/Constellation label brings to the table! Titles include their classic "Romeo Where's Juliet" – plus "Kickin It", "Winners & Losers", "Shine The Light", "In the Mix", and "Here & Now". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Four – Memphis ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. The record's got a very special sound – in the same "beyond jazz" territory of recent gems from the International Anthem label – and the group also features guest work from Steve Swell on trombone and Ryan White on vibes. Titles include "Wild Fire Bare", "Piddling", "Shoes Of Gold", "Fit To Be Tied", "As Far As The Eye Can See", "Trail Of The Smiling Sphinx", and "How Bright They Shine". CD

✨✧ KlymaxxMeeting In The Ladies Room ... CD
Constellation/Universal, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from this big 80s group – and given the work that must have gone into the doos on the cover of this one, it's no surprise Klymaxx are in the Ladies Room – most likely still waiting for their hair to dry! The album's a batch of tightly-crafted mid 80s crossover soul – as much pop as it is the kind of female group material you might guess from the time, with keyboards and electric percussion dominating most of the grooves, so that the vocals slide right into the straightest, catchiest approach for the tunes! Titles include "Lock & Key", "The Men All Pause", "Video Kid", "Ask Me No Questions", "Love Bandit", "I Betcha", "I Miss You", and "Just Our Luck". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 32.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. 2LP set features studio material – including "Saturday Morning", "Villa Tiamo", "Chi-Congo 50", "I Greet You With Open Arms", and "Fanfare & Bell". Beach BoysPet Sounds (mono & stereo mixes) ... CD
Capitol, 1966. Used ... $4.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Titles include "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Pet Sounds", "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and "You Still Believe In Me". Includes Mono and Stereo mixes of the whole album! CD

Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Okeh/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $15.99 26.99
Link Davis is holding a saxophone on the cover, but he's also a hell of a fiddler too – and this huge collection of his music follows a strong shift in his style over the course of the 50s – from a rootsy cajun musician to one that's got more of a rocking vibe overall! The package brings together rare Okeh and Starday Records singles from Link – material produced by two top country talents of the 50s, Don Law and Pappy Dailey – with a quality level that makes each individual tune really sparkle, and sound great here together as a constellation of overlooked gems from the time! There's plenty of shift between Louisiana and east Texas modes in the music – and titles include "Sixteen Chicks", "Big Mamou", "Time Will Tell", "Hey Garcon", "Rice & Gravy Blues", "Bayou Buffalo", "Trucker From Tennessee", "Slippin & Slidin Sometimes", "Big Coonie", "Grasshopper Rock", "Would You Be Waiting", and "The Crawfish Crawl". You'll be hard pressed to find a better collection of Charlie Parker's classic work on vinyl! Bird's great recordings for Savoy have often been poorly packaged over the years, but here you get the whole batch of seminal bop sides by the pioneering artist of the genre! Bird's the leader on most of these sides, but there's a nice set of recordings under Tiny Grimes and a very young Miles Davis too, with a host of players from the dawn of the bebop age, including Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Sadik Hakim, John Lewis, Duke Jordan, Curly Russell, Tommy Potter and Max Roach. An as you'd expect from this kind of set, you get loads of multiple takes so you can hear these pioneering players creating the style that would change the face of jazz forever. A killer compilation of late 60s & 70s tunes by Peruvian cumbia combo Los Destellos – leaning on the psychedelia inspired sounds from their earlier years! The sound is rooted in cumbia rhythms and electric guitar – but it nimble and spindly of heavily fuzzed out – with a more varied Latin instrumental ensemble mode that deftly layers in elements of psych beat, garage rock and other hard grooving styles. 20 tracks on 2LPs, including "Guajira Sicodelica", "Natalia", "La Fatidica", "Frenetica Guajira", "Pasion Oriental", "El Oasis", "Constellation", "A Patricia", "Boogaloo De Los Destellos", "El Marcianito", "Linda Chiquilina", "Cumbia Del Desierto", "Volando Alto" and more. Savoy, Mid 40s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A nicely distilled collection pulled together for issue in the mid 70s, of Charlie Parker's work for Savoy Records – done between the years 1944-1948, with some of the best talents in the bop business! Some of the other Savoy Parker sets have been a bit too overstuffed with alternate takes – and this one nicely changes that by focusing only on the material that made it out to the public as 78rpm recordings at the time. The double LP set features a total of 30 tracks – with titles that include "Tiny's Tempo", "Barbados", "Constellation", "Marmaduke", "Steeplechase", "Chasin The Bird", "Billie's Bounce", "Romance Without Finance", "Perhaps", and "Parker's Mood".
