KinksState Of Confusion ... LP
Arista, 1983. Near Mint- ... $5.99 7.99
One of the most successful of the later Kinks albums – thanks to the hit single "Come Dancing", which kind of tied together the group's later leanings with some of their sweeter, nostagic approaches from the 60s. In fact, there's a quality to the set that really has Ray Davies going back to his "little pictures" sort of approach – wrapping up individuals and individual subjects nicely in the space of 3 to 4 minutes. Titles include "Labour Of Love", "Definite Maybe", "State Of Confusion", "Heart Of Gold", "Young Conservatives", "Cliches Of The World", and "Come Dancing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonic YouthConfusion Is Sex (plus Kill Yr Idols) ... CD
DGC, 1983. Used ... $6.99
Sonic Youth as early 80s noise mongers – a low fi, clattering mess of fuzzy post punk – sounding better than we ever remembered all these years later! There's an undercurrent of ominousness that permeates Confusion Is Sex – working with space and a sense of pacing that's an sharp counterpoint to the caustic waves guitar noise. We've been underappreciating these uber early Sonic Youth LPs – all hail Sonic Youth, who were pretty amazing earlier in the game than we previously realized! CD

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Confusion/Gentleman (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1973/1974. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really mindblowing work from Fela – a seminal 70s set that may well open up even more than any other album from the time – as the leader and Africa 70 stretch out on a single track that takes up the entire record! "Confusion" is almost proggish at the start – with a long passage that just features drums from Tony Allen and some really offbeat electric piano from Fela – slowly building up a groove out of the darkness, then letting the rest of the group come into the mix – all at a level that definitely sets the tune on fire for the righteous politics of the lyrics! The whole thing's no sloppy, over-extended jam – and instead, the record's a great demonstration of the care and craft that Fela brought to his musical vision at the time. The Gentleman LP is represented here by 3 songs – "Gentleman", "Igbe (Shit)", and "Fe Fe Naa Efe" – all of which are brimming with angry energy, and a heavy brassy overdrive! Loads of African funk grooves, packed onto one superbly done CD! CD

CTI All StarsCTI Summer Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl Vol 2 ... LP
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Man, it's like a talent bomb exploded! This set's stuffed with work by some of the greatest jazz funk players of the early 70s – Johnny Hammond, Bob James, Deodato, George Benson, Joe Farrell, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, Grover Washington Jr, Hubert Laws, and others – all playing together at a massive live concert recorded in Hollywood in 1972! And although you might worry that the collection of so many great talents on one stage might just create confusion – don't! The quality of the work is excellent – almost better than the best of the CTI studio sides, with a lean, clean sound that's really really tight – never overblown, just sweet electric funk with loads of great space for solo work. This second volume of the 3 LP set includes takes of "Blues Force", "Rock Steady", "People Make The World Go Round" and a medley of "Ithe From Love Story", "Pavane" and "Fire & Rain". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some surface and edge wear, a small mark from sticker removal, some wear at the corners, and is bent a bit at the spine.)

Shanachie, Late 80s. Used ... $5.99
A great double-length set that collects 2 rare sessions from late in Fela's career! Don't be put off by the date, though, because the material's great – and has that tight hard Afro Beat groove that you'll know from Underground System, another session from around the same time. "ODOO" is over 30 minutes long, with a tight choppy groove, and a very nice hook! "CBB – Confusion Break Bones" is a nice groover too, and is also nearly 30 minutes long! CD

Ivan Boogaloo Joe JonesSweetback ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $17.99 24.99
A monster set of work by one of the funkiest guitar players ever! Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones recorded a number of sides for Prestige Records during the early 70s – but this rare gem came out after all those, in 1975, on the tiny Joka label, and never really got into proper circulation at the time – making it one of THE indie jazz funk classics of the 70s! The album's actually one of Boogaloo's best – and has a rougher edge than his Prestige albums – heard to great effect on the two standout funky cuts, "Sweetback" and "Confusion" – both of which are stunners that feature Jones really ripping away on the guitar! The whole set's nice, though – and other tracks include "You've Got It Bad Girl", "Trouble In Mind", and "Jamaica Farewell". CD

MndsgnSnaxxx ... LP
Stones Throw, 2023. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Mndsgn adds an extra x to the title here, which might cause a bit of confusion with the previous Snaxx set – yet we can definitely say that he seems to have only deepened his groove since that record, opening the door for some soul-drenched elements that almost have us wishing someone would snatch him up, and have him work with some of the bigger-name soul singers of our generation! But as before, maybe it's the leanness that serves Mndsgn best – his way of finding a groove, snaking a bassline, gently nudging a keyboard, and all those understated elements that really do more with less – an approach that even extends to the vocals that visit some of the tracks on the set. Titles include "Luv Mirage", "Papercrane", "My Pleasure", "Fillsmeup", "Living Colours", "MakeU", "Finallyalone", and "Midnitesnaq". LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah SandersMoon Child (180 gram orange & gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Beautiful late 80s work from Pharoah – a wonderfully uncomplicated session that still has a great degree of soul! The album was recorded in Paris, with a quintet that includes William Henderson on acoustic piano, Stafford James on bass, Eddie Moore on drums, and Cheikh Tidiane Fale on percussion – and the overall approach is a bit more straight ahead than on some of Sanders' other albums – but in a really great way! The tunes are long and introspective – all done with spiritual rhythmic approaches, letting Pharoah open up on tenor and soprano sax – but never in a way that's overblown or overdone. The solos are perfectly placed – with wonderful phrasing and tone, rich in the colors that we've always loved on Sanders' work, but which can sometimes get lost in the confusion of an over-ambitious session. Titles include "Moon Child", "Moon Rays", "Soon", "Moniebah", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousPure Miami Jewels – TK Rare Mellow Groove ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
The deepest sound of the legendary TK Records label in the 70s – music that shows the way the company was really helping to transform the sound of southern soul in the decade, and also open the door to a whole new range of styles too! The tracks here definitely have a mellow groove, but they're never sleepy – just set apart from the more disco-oriented hits on TK, thanks to a sophisticated approach to instrumentation and arrangements – at a level that still makes most of these cuts stand head and shoulder above mainstream soul of the time! You'll know a few artists from earlier, straighter material – and will discover a number of other rarer, much more obscure TK talents – in a great set list that includes "Confusion" by Leno Phillips, "Keep Her Happy" by Phillip Wright, "I Got Bills To Pay" by Johnny K, "Thousand Years" by Brand New, "If You Want My Love" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "You Can Be A Lady" by JP Robinson, "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" by Betty Wright, "Sleep On Dream On" by Raphael Munnings, "Tears Of The World" by Robert Moore, "The Silence That You Keep" by Milton Wright, "You Knock Me Out" by Wildflower, and "Love Insurance" by Gwen McCrae. ✨✧ Alex Attias Presents MustangBack Home ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime future jazz from Alex Attias – one of the key forces in the cosmic London scene of the 21st Century, stepping out here in a long-awaited full-length set that served up the full complement of his talents! As you'd expect from Alex, there's plenty of snapping beats and spacey keys on the set – an extrapolation of 70s funky jazz, into the spacier and headier realm that's been explored by Attias and the best of his contemporaries on recent singles. But over and above the high quality usual, there's also a farther-reaching set of rhythms and modes of expression going on here – as Alex uses the freedom of the full-length to work in modes that are sometimes subtler, sometimes more experimental – occasionally just grooving instrumentally, but also getting plenty of help from guest stars that include Vanessa Freeman, Jessica Lauren, Bembe Segue, Colonel Red, and Mark De Clive-Lowe. Tracks include "Help Me", "Closer To Me", "Future Jazz", "In The Jungle", "Back Home", "Everchanging Times", "Darker Side Of Light", "Angels", "Confusion", and "Transformation". CD

✨✧ Charles BradleyVictim Of Love ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". ✨✧ TemptationsPsychedelic Soul (expanded and remastered) ... CD
Motown, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2CDs – and a motherlode of classic work by The Temptations! The set focuses on the group's groundbreaking work with producer Norman Whitfield at Motown – sides from the late 60s and early 70s that were some of the most righteous to ever come out of the motor city! Whitfield had a really magical style that was perfect for the group – taking their older group style, and souping it up with heavy bass, rumbling drums, and lots of fuzzy guitar licks – all of which made for a sound that was instantly psychedelic, and massively righteous! The set includes 2 previously unreleased longer takes of "Psychedelic Shack" and "Ball Of Confusion" – plus 22 other classics that include "Slave", "Message From A Black Man", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down", "Cloud Nine", "Runaway Child", "Love Can Be Anything", "Smiling Faces Sometimes", "Ungena Za Ulimengu", "Masterpiece", "Ain't No Justice", "1990", "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On", "Take A Stroll Thru Your Mind", "Plastic Man", and "War". ✨✧ Undisputed TruthNothing But The Truth (Undisputed Truth/Down To Earth/Law Of The Land/bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first three albums by Undisputed Truth – finally on CD, with bonus tracks too! First up is the amazing debut of Undisputed Truth – one of the coolest new Motown groups of the 70s – and one of the few that really continued the experimental legacy of the label in the late 60s! As with the Temptations during their psychedelic years, Undisputed Truth are handled by superproducer Norman Whitfield – who does a fantastic job of mixing deeper ideas and righteous themes with some of the soaring soul that was the Motown stock in trade – a wonderful blend that made these guys one of the best groups poised to push the label into the new decade! Titles include the huge hit "Smiling Faces Sometimes", plus lots of covers of cool tracks like "California Soul", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Ball Of Confusion", and "You Got The Love I Need". Law Of The Land is an unstoppable groove from The Undisputed Truth – a group who worked with Norman Whitfield in the same psychedelic soul territory as The Temptations – and who arguably got the sound across even better than them! This set's not as much of a bit hit as the group's other records from the time – but that makes it sound even fresher and more fierce – loads of those hard-rolling basslines you'd expect from Whitfield's production – and some soaring arrangements from Paul Riser and David Van DePitte, both of whom give the album a sense of majesty to match its inherent righteousness. Titles include "Law of The Land" and "Mama I Got A Brand New Thing" – plus covers of Temps tunes "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and "Just My Imagination" – and other covers that include "Love & Happiness", "If I Die", "Feelin' Alright", and "Killing Me Softly", done in the full soul mode of the group. Down To Earth features Undisputed Truth at the height of their powers – still working in the psychedelic soul style they forged with Norman Whitfield at the end of the 60s – but with a groove that's tighter and sharper than ever before! We might well call the record the funkiest the group ever cut – as Whitfield's production really brings the rhythms into strong focus, while still letting the righteous message in the lyrics shine through in the group's strong sense of interplay – that back/forth between male and female vocals that really helps the group create a sense of social conversation. Titles include the Whitfield originals "Help Yourself", "Big John Is My Name", "Save My Love For A Rainy Day", and "Law Of The Land" – but the best tracks might be their covers, like "Love & Happiness" and "Our Day Will Come", both totally remade here into great new versions! CD features 6 more bonus tracks – including "Let's Go Back To Day One" and "Gonna Keep On Tryin Till I Win Your Love" – plus single edits of "What's Going On", "What It Is", "You Make Your Own Heaven & Hell", and "Law Of The Land". A killer compilation of cuts by The Pleasure Seekers – the criminally overlooked teen garage rock girl group with roots in the feral mid 60s Detroit scene! The band's relative obscurity is all the more surprising, given that it's the first band featuring glam rock trailblazer Suzi Quatro – with her sisters Patti, Nancy and Arlene in the lineup at one point or another, making this a bonafide sister act – along with equally roaring friends Pami Benford, Diane Baker, Darline Arone, Nan Ball and Nancy Rogers moving in and out of the lineup during the 1965-1968 run immortalized here. Athens Of The North (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of music we've ever heard from the legendary TK Records in Miami – a company that was a powerhouse of 70s hits and disco classics – but which also cut some wonderful underground soul at the time! This sublime set looks at that great lesser-known legacy of TK – the hipper, more sophisticated music they cut in between the chart numbers and boogie singles – often by soul artists who had some involvement with bigger acts, but who really got a chance here to shine on their own! There's a surprising amount of funk in the mix – that deeper current that made Miami a key heir to 60s funky styles from Memphis and New Orleans – and there's some equally great modern soul, but served up with a complexity that goes way past the usual – both in the songwriting and arrangements. If you've only heard TK hit collections, you'll find plenty to love here – and even for deeper diggers like us, there's still plenty of new bits to be discovered! Titles include "Confusion" by Leno Phillips, "You Knock Me Out" by Wildflower, "Hey There Jim" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Tears Of The World" by Robert Moore, "I Got Bills To Pay" by Johnny K, "I Want To Be Loved" by Stevens & Foster, "Sleep On Dream On" by Raphael Munnings, "Life Is A Beautiful Feeling" by Formula 1, "Bahama Soul Stew" by Funky Nassau, "Lay It On Me" by Willie Johnson, "The Silence That You Keep (version 1)" by Milton Wright, and "There Must Be Something" by Friday Saturday & Sunday. Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A really heady set of tracks from the American scene – music that effortlessly bridges the 60s sounds of garage, blues rock, and psych – and prefaces some of the metal and more guitar-heavy modes to emerge later on in the 70s! The work here definitely shares more with the sounds of the 60s, but also really captures the music at a moment when things were really transforming – groups were getting past a slavish presentation of their influences, finding bold new modes of expression, and really letting their freak flag fly with fuzzy brilliance throughout – all at levels that were also different than some of the longer-spun modes of the European progressive world. As with other Grapefruit packages, the distillation of a sound and scene here is wonderful – and supported with very detailed notes too – in a package that includes 62 tracks in all - with work from Bang, Sudden Death, Dust, Arthur Lee, Boomerang, Cactus, Grand Funk, The Flow, Head Over Heels, Sir Lord Baltimore, ZZ Top, Brigade, Fuse, Conception, Morgen, Coven, Alice Cooper, Nazz, Stack, Spirit, Kim Fowley, SRC, Mass Confusion Rock Band, Society's Children, Omnibus, Wildwood, Human Beinz, The Sound Barrier, Fever Tree, and many others! A really wonderful take on the music of Jimi Hendrix – an all-piano trio headed by Geri Allen, and one that presents Jimi's songs in a wonderful new way! Titles include "Message To Love", "Cherokee Mist", "Manic Depression", "Wind Cries Mary", "Love Or Confusion", and "1983". CD

This first volume of the 3 LP set includes takes of "First Light", "California Dreaming" and a medley of "Inner City Blues" and "What's Going On". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Silver ApplesSilver Apples/Contact ... CD
MCA (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Both of the rare original albums by this legendary 60s electronic group – out now on one lovely 18 track CD! The Apples were one of the most unique groups of their era, and they mixed electronics with a throbbing rock groove in a way that not only predicted lots of the musical trends of the 70's, but which has also been taken up again in the 90's by a host of young bands. The group has reformed these days, but these two albums are still their best. Titles include "Velvet Cave", "Oscillations", "Whirly-Bird", "Dust", "Misty Mountain", "Water", "Pox On You", "Confusion", and "Fantasies". CD

Excello, 1983. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of keyboard funk – a record hidden under a title that references the ET movie, but which is very different than a soundtrack! The set's got all sorts of keyboard solos over the grooves – mostly clubby rhythms, but sometimes a bit more laidback – and there's more than a few moments that have a nice sort of 80s electro vibe! Titles include the originals "Nuclear Confusion", "Slingshot Spaceshot", "Iodawn", "Doctor Strangelovers", and "Solaris". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TP Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouLe Sato 2 ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The rare second volume of this elusive record from one of the funkiest combos in Benin – a set that was originally only circulated in the same cover as the first volume – which has made for plenty of confusion over the years! This follow-up is maybe even more hard-hitting than the initial release – with long tracks that groove wonderfully with skittish rhythms, strong basslines, and raw production that makes the guitar and vocals echo out in a really bold way! There are occasional echoes of Latin American styles that influenced music in West Africa – especially Colombian modes – and the blend of sounds here is completely fantastic. Titles include "General Gowon", "A Non Zoun Mi", "La Verite Blesse", "Je N'En Pleux Plus", and "Gendemou Na Wili We Gnannin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Undisputed TruthSmiling Faces – The Best Of Undisputed Truth ... CD
Motown, Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A dozen tracks of super-righteous soul – some of the heaviest work ever recorded for Motown! Undisputed Truth were the brainchild of Norman Whitfield – the producer who first forged the psychedelic soul sound of the late 60s with the Temptations, then moved onto Undisputed Truth to work some similar magic! The group's work was incredibly strong through their entire run at Motown – really pushing the boundaries of standard soul with a host of cosmic influences and really trippy rhythms. This set features some of their best – a set list that includes "UFOs", "Smiling Faces Sometimes", "Papa Was A Rollin Stone", "Law Of The Land", "You Make Your Own Heaven & Hell Right Here On Earth", "What It Is", "Help Yourself", "Lil Red Riding Hood", "Poontang", "Higher Than High", and "Ball Of Confusion". ✨✧ Clare FischerDuality ... LP
Discovery, 1969/1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great little album that was recorded in 1969 but not issued until 1980 – and which features material that's very much in the same spirit (the same sessions?) as Fischer's excellent Thesaurus album! The feel here is really magical – with Clare's piano floating gently over the top in soft bossa-inspired waves, as a larger group made up of some of LA's best players provide backgrounds and rhythm rich in tonal colors. Titles include "Their Tears", "This Is Always", "The Greek", "Confusion In Dallas", and "Liz Anne". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & Strings ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Sublime work by Dizzy! Although Charlie Parker's "with strings" experiments are always the best known in the Verve catalog, Dizzy's work in this vein is simply amazing, and has him playing in a more avant garde setting than you'll ever hear from the time! The set features tracks that have Dizzy blowing over arrangements by either Johnny Richards or Buster Harding, wrapped up in a beautiful abstract David Stone Martin cover. Titles include "Pile Driver", "Cool Eyes", "Confusion", "Silhouette", and "O Solow", which also has some vocalization from Diz! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Silver ApplesContact (blue swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kapp/Jackpot, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible second album from Silver Apples – even more mad, more trippy, and more space rock than the first! The tunes are all awash in fuzziness – mad guitars, distorted vocals, and rough electronics coming into play with a bit of banjo and some stark, stiff percussion that makes the whole thing have a bit of a groove at times! The sound is otherworldly and incredible – hugely influential upon a generation of 90s popsters, but even better than any of the imitations they've spawned over the years! Titles include "You & I", "Water", "Ruby", "I Have Known Love", and "Confusion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Spacemen 3Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To (with download) ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title certainly gets it right – as Spacemen 3 were legally-registered heroin addicts in the UK at the time of this recording – very unusual in the years before heroin chic of the 90s! The set came out after the group's first few landmark records, but actually features earlier demo material recorded in 1986 – really wonderful sounds that are a great change from the tighter direction the group were taking as the 90s moved on – as these sides still have them very much awash in fuzz, and probably pretty fuzzed-out themselves! Sonic Boom provides loads of wonderfully trippy guitar feedback, and the group's a quartet here – with guitar, bass, and percussion – on titles that include "Come Down Easy", "That's Just Fine", "Mary Anne", "Sound Of Confusion", "A-Men", and "Losing Touch With My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album
