Jon AppletonAppleton Syntonic Menagerie ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
An incredible record from the glory days of Flying Dutchman! The session's one of a rare few cut by electronic musician Jon Appleton, and it's a stunning blend of analogue electronics and sonic cut up material – a record of musique concrete compositions to rival the greatest work coming out of France in the late 50s and early 60s! Appleton's approach to the material is at some level like that of Pierre Henry, but at another level, he's also using some bits of late 60s Americana – such as a Chef Boyardee commercial, or snippets of interviews done in an airport – and it's elements like these that give the set a darkness that makes it even more compelling. Titles include "Chef D'Oeuvre", "Newark Airport Rock", "Times Square Times Ten", "Second Scene Unobserved", "Nyckelharpen", and "The Visitation". CD

Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". Record Kicks (UK), 2012. New Copy (reissue)... About April 1, 2021
Massive work from Calibro 35 – a group we've been digging on obscure overseas releases – stepping out here on their first American record, and easily their funkiest album to date! The sound is wonderful – still filled with the older Italian soundtrack references that got the group's music going in the first place – but also driven by a much tighter sound at the bottom, especially on the drums – which really drive the tunes strongly! Other instrumentation includes loads of keyboards – especially clavinet-type riffs that fit the group's 70s cop/crime mode perfectly – and titles include "Uh Ah Brrr", "Thank You & Goodbye", "New Delhi Deli", "New York New York", "Italian Band From BBQ", "Rain On Concrete", and "A Massacre At Dawn". Down To The BoneClassic Album Series (From Manhattan To Staten/Urban Grooves/Spread The Word – with bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 1996/1998/2001. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". German OakDown In The Bunker (3CD set) ... CD
Bunker/Now Again, 1972. New Copy 3CD ... $9.99 20.98
One of the darkest albums of the Krautrock scene in the 70s – an album that was actually recorded in a WWII-era bunker – where the duo were free to open up their instruments, jam for a very long time, and play with the sorts of effects and techniques you might know from bigger groups of the period! Yet there's a brooding quality here that's different than Can, Faust, or other groups – maybe because German Oak were a duo without a very clear path forward, and also because recording an album in an underground concrete bunker was bound to produced some weird vibes on the session! One of the group members recalls in the notes that in the space, he couldn't help thinking of the trauma of WWII – and you can definitely hear that in the music, and see it in the look of the package – which carries tunes that include "Screaming Skeletons", "Missile Song", "Belle's Song", and "Nothing". This fantastic package offers up some great notes from the group – in both German and English – and also adds in rare material too – the tracks "Bear Song", "Happy Stripes On Cats", "Ghost Guitar", "Belle's Song (extended)", "Python Vs Tiger", "Giant Rock Boulder Golem", "Missle Song (extended)", "Harpy & Peregrine", and "Bear Song (alt version)". Wendy Gondeln/Mats Gustafsson/Wolfgang Voigt/Martin SiewertS**thole Country & Boogie Band ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
Reedman Mats Gustafsson is in very cool territory here – blowing a variety of saxes, but also getting manipulated by the electric treatments of Wendy Gondeln – Mats' violin partner on the album's duo improvisations, but also a soundshaper with talents to be reckoned with! Gustafsson also opens up on some live electronics too, plus a bit of piano mate – and this electric side of his talents is a new one, but a great one too – mixing familiar improvisation with a larger sonic palette, in ways that almost make for a merging of free jazz and musique concrete! Some of the tracks are quite tuneful, even if fairly freewheeling – and the set also features editing and mixing from Wolfgang Voigt, and guest guitar on two tracks from Martin Siewert. Titles include "Gabber Jazz", "Sloop", "Paid", "Cooler", "Crowdfunding", and "Jazz Abstrakt 1.3". CD

Pierre HenryUn Monde Lacere ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 2008. New Copy ... $29.99
The legendary French electronic composer Pierre Henry was 80 when he created this piece – but the sound of the music is very much close to his roots – and recalls the kind of striking combinations that Henry brought to the postwar world of musique concrete! The work was recorded in collaboration with artist Jacques Villegle, whose pieces often involve things ripped up and re-assembled – a feel that really comes through here in the strange array of sounds that are created and shuffled by Henry – elements that, like all of his classic creations, are very difficult to locate in any sort of exact source of location. That doesn't men that the music is very abstract – as Pierre always goes for these very distinct elements that really leap right out of the recording – but there's this really unusual quality that verges between electric and acoustic, and which maybe goes back to the true roots of electro-acoustic music. The album features one long piece – "Un Monde Lacere" – composed and performed by Henry at studio Son/Re in 2008./ LP, Vinyl record album

Syl JohnsonIs It Because I'm Black (limited edition) ... CD
Twinight, Late 60s. New Copy ... $6.99
An incredible new version of Syl Johnson's classic album Is It Because I'm Black – packaged here with a huge number of bonus cuts in a collection designed by Syl himself! The core album is one of the best ever soul albums to come out of Chicago – and it may well be one of the best soul albums to ever come out of the 60s! Syl Johnson mixes west side bluesy soul with some great Chicago soul arrangements by Jimmy Jones & The Pieces Of Peace – and the result is one of the heaviest soul albums you'll ever hear – hard-hitting and funky one minute, sweeter and more groovy the next – a wonderful portrait of the depth of Chicago soul at the time. Added to the original album are some tracks from later years – including a 2006 remake of "Is It Because I'm Black", some more conventional southern soul numbers from the early 70s, and Johnson's seminal 80s groover "Ms Fine Brown Frame". 20 tracks in all – with titles that include "Right On Sister", "Is It Because I'm Black", "Kiss By Kiss", "One Way Ticket", "Get Ready", "Black Balloons", "Walk A Mile In My Shoes", "Concrete Reservation", "Talk Bout Freedom", "New Day", "Your Love Is Good For Me", "That Is Why", "Together Forever", and "Tell The Truth". There's a fair bit of all-electronic numbers that are spare and striking – almost musique concrete – mixed with others that have a more melodic vibe – all served up in short tunes that really shift the mood over the course of the set. One of the darkest, moodiest soundtracks we've ever heard from Ennio Morricone – even in comparison to some of his atonal horror work of the 70s! The vibe here is almost 20th Century avant chamber – a bit like work from Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova, but even more experimental – as odd bits of sound samples are filtered through these dark sonic textures, string parts, and electronics – all with a style that's very musique concrete overall! Tracks are much longer than usual for a soundtrack too – and the record has an experimental greatness that really stands apart from the film. Basta/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... About March 12, 2021
Amazing! This is one of the coolest sets we've seen in years – and everything about it is fantastic, from the package right down to the triple-length set of music! The set features rare unreleased recordings from Raymond Scott's legendary Manhattan Research electronic music studios – originally set up in 1946, and home to some of Scott's landmark early work on non-acoustic music during the 50s and 60s. Far from being the sort of turgid, dark knob-twiddling that computer music later became in the academy, Scott's early experiments are filled with a sense of whimsy and joy – exported directly from his early cartoon-based work, and applied in a fantastic way to his evolving musical inventions! The LP edition comes as three separate records, plus a great 8 page booklet of notes, in a brilliant graphic style that complements the package even further! Don't forget the music, though – because it's totally fantastic – and kind of reminds us of bits of Jon Appleton's Syntonic Menagerie, Pierre Henry's early Musique Concrete, and later punk-era DIY electronics. That doesn't even come close to pinning it down, though – and with 3 LPs worth of material, the scope of the work is amazing! LP, Vinyl record album

Three PiecesVibes Of Truth ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A great little album of jazz funk – and the only record we've ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records – and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals – in kind of a subdued soul mode – and tracks include the groove classics "Backed Up Against The Wall", "Shortnin Bread", "Concrete Jungle", and "Vibes Of Truth". And believe it or not, there aren't any vibes on the album! CD

Pipe/Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 2CDs ... $12.99
A great 2CD set – one that brings together two rare installments of this Miniatures series of music, collage, and sound art! First up is the 1979 edition – a really fantastic little record – and one that has a concept that's unlike anything else we can think of! Morgan Fisher presents 51 different "miniatures" – songs that are a minute or less, all stacked up to make a record that's somewhere between the DIY post-punk spirit of the Rough Trade years, and some of the more offbeat, avant work of the electronic/musique concrete generation! The mix of artists is fantastic, and the brevity of the songs means that if there's something you don't like, you'll quickly be in the company of the next song – and Fisher should not only be hailed for the way that he put the whole thing together, but also for the amazing selection of artists – a lineup that includes Kevin Coyne, David Bedford, Fred Frith, Robert Wyatt, John Otway, Quentin Crisp, Michael Nyman, Pete Seeger, David Cunningham, Ron Geesin, Robert Fripp, George Melly, Steve Miller, Lol Coxhill, Neil Innes, Maggie Nicols, Andy Partridge, Stinky Winkles, and many others! CD2 features the installment from the year 2000 – with 61 more pieces, done in a similar spirit, but with a shift in technology – in a lineup that includes contributions from Gavin Bryars, Jan Campion, Robert Fripp, Dissidenten, David Cunningham, Chris Butler, John Paul Jones, Ottmar Liebert, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Trans Global Underground, Jane Siberry, Terry Riley, Hermeto Pascoal, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and many others! Finders Keepers (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two amazing works from Belgian electronic genius Alain Pierre – both appearing in this form for the first time ever! Side one features 11 minutes of continuous music that Pierre created for the short film O Sidarta – music that mixes a range of electronics, keyboards, and acoustic percussion with studio effects and voice – all with a result that almost feels like some of the longer-form prog creations of the German scene of the time – although with qualities that are much more varied, less rock-based, and with occasional nods to the earlier generation of musique concrete! The flipside features the 17 minute "Notions De Physique Intererieure" – a work that uses a wide array of electric sources in a very short space – theremin, Arp sequencer, Telefunken echomixer, and more Arp, Kort, and Oberheim keyboards – all in this slow-building, wonderfully spacey sort of mode – almost hinting at some of the straighter fantasy soundtracks that Pierre would create in the mainstream – as the piece has the feel of a story in sound! A really cool little package – one that brings space age sounds from both the world of mainstream pop, and the farther reaches of electronic music composition in the postwar years! The core of CD1 is the groundbreaking album I Hear A New World by Joe Meek – presented here both in the "restored" version that was first issued by RPM in 1991, and the original unreleased tapes from 1960. The whole record is like The Ventures meeting space aliens – and Joe Meek composed and conceived the incredible 60s session of strange space-age instrumentals – one that mixes instrumental surf-flavored guitars with crazy sound effects and production techniques, for an out-of-this-world batch of tracks that's like nothing else we can think of! Tracks include "Glob Waterfall", "I Hear A New World", "Orbit Around The Moon", "March Of The Dribcots", and "Valley Of The Saroos". There's lots of dark moments and strange noises on the record, but Sorgini does a good job of balancing tuneful sections with more abstract passages – in a way that moves beautifully between darkness and light, but with maybe a bit more time in the shadows overall. Titles include "Marker", "Loudspeaker", "Solitudine Venusiana", "Maracas Nell'Atmosfera", "Fabbrica Spaziale", "Dinamica K", and "Malinconia Magnetica". LP, Vinyl record album

Strange Disc, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible soundtrack for the black cinema classic Ganja & Hess – a film that's often cited in the history of blacksploitation films, but which is much deeper overall! In some ways, both the movie and soundtrack are like Sweet Sweetback's Baadass Song – created in the same moment, and accessing audiences through the same channels – but completely different and distinct! The music here is sometimes soulful, but often quite experimental – and features lots of echo, studio effects, and tape tricks – often layering the sound in striking ways that could make some of the tracks resonate more strongly with musique concrete than with blacksploitation funk. Other moments are moody and atmospheric – while others are pure gospel. This album is the first-ever release of the soundtrack – and titles include "Blood Of The Thing", "Bongili Work Song 1", "Hess Is Stabbed", "Survival/Drive", "The Seduction", "March Blues", and "Theme From Blood Couple".
