✨✧ ColoursColours ... CD
Dot/World Psychedelia (Korea), 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best American psyche albums we've heard from the late 60s – a near-perfect record that's head and shoulders above the rough experimentation of most other groups from the period! Colours spell their name with a definite British twist, and there's clearly a Beatles influence going on here – a sound that's almost pre-Sgt Peppers, but which has wonderfully complicated time changes, vocal parts, and production techniques that must have cost a pretty penny to such a little-known group! Horns and strings are arranged by Dave Roberts, and handled with a sensitivity that almost matches The Zombies' best at times – and the tunes themselves are a fresh variety of odd themes, including one number about robbing a liquor store. Titles include "Brother Lou's Love Colony", "Bad Day At Black Rock Baby", "Love Heals", "Rather Be Me", "I'm Leaving", "Cataleptic", "Don't You Realize", and "Lovin". CD

✨✧ Gang ColoursKeychain Collection ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Melodic and atmospheric sounds from Gang Colours – fragile and tuneful material that's somewhat of a surprise from the Brownswood label! I guess we shouldn't really think of what Gang Colours does here as that much of a departure for the label, given their unpredictable oeuvre is never all that easy to pigeonhole, yet it still caught us off guard – in the best kind of way. Piano and synth float over intermittently spare and busier beats, vocals and textural waves of sound. What really sets it apart is the mood – we don't want to call it somber, but it's definitely got a haunting feel! Includes "Heavy Petting", "Forgive Me?", "To Repel Ghosts", "Pebble Dash", "Tissues & Fivers", "Botley In Bloom", "Fancy Restaurant", "On Compton Bay", "Rollo's Ivory Tale" and more. CD

✨✧ Rob ChapmanPsychedelia & Other Colours (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 36.00
An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

EdanBeauty & The Beat ... CD
Lewis, 2005. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Edan returns with a new set of his sample heavy wizardry – this time out steeped heavily in late 60s pysch out flourishes, yet still sporting the thickest breakbeats available. His rhyme style is both ridiculous and genius – with tongue twists that pay homage and blast forward simultaneously. Guests include Mr Lif, Insight, and Percee-P. Tracks include "Funky Voltron", "I See Colours", "Torture Chamber", "Promised Land", "Time Outt", "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme", "Making Planets", "Murder Mystery", "Rock And Roll", and "Smile". Massimo Guantini (Sandro Brugnolini)Diapositive ... LP
Gemelli/Loneos Editions (Italy), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
A sound library album from the Italian 70s scene – but one that's more like a jazz record overall, given that it's the product of musician Sandro Brugnolini, working under an assumed name – a cat who gave the world plenty of great jazz records in his day! There's a nice mix of keyboards on the set – acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keys – used in small combo modes that move between upbeat groovers, jazz dance numbers, and a few mellower moments – a really well-rounded record that also has some nice guitar work in the group too! Titles include "Frilioni", "Alta Vegetazione", "Topgrafie", "Sugar's Bread", "Quorum", "Veline", and "Constellation's Colours". LP, Vinyl record album

TeiscoTuscan Castle & Country Seat ... LP
Ciclamino/Roundtable (Australia), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Hardly the kind of record you'd expect with the words "castle" and "country" in the title – a madly tripped-out sound library session that's equal parts psych funk and experimental sounds! Some of the shorter tunes are nice and funky – with raw, minimal drums and guitar that almost seem like they're going to veer off the track – a bit like the John Cale/Terry Riley experiments on Columbia. But other tunes are weirder and spacier – some with fuzzy electronics, others with a weirdly spacious, open use of guitar or piano – not really dreamy, but more tripped-out and long-form – almost a precursor to Spacemen 3. Titles include "City Sound Perspective", "Old Colours", "White Gladiator", "Green Water", and "Vision Of Shore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy vinyl and cover – and bonus notes too!)

✨✧ VariousGaiety Records Story Vol 2 – Rare Canadian Rock From The 60s ... CD
Lion, 1960s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A great little discovery from the 60s – work from a teeny tiny Canadian label, but all of it pretty darn great! Not many groups recorded for the Gaeity Records label, but they all seem to be pretty well skilled at picking up on the best elements of 60s psyche pop and garage – all delivered here with a simple but effective groove that's almost a bridge between the LA and Chicago scenes of the mid 60s. CD features 24 tracks in all – broken into sections group by group – and titles include "World Of Dreams" and "Only In America" by The Plague, "Lies" and "Nature's Love" by Solid Reputation, "So Much In Love With You" and "My Time Is Comin" by The Checkerlads, "If You Can Dig It" and "Ode To A Cucumber, A Berry, & A Flower" by The Dewline, "Lexington Avenue" by Farmer John, "Yours Until Tomorrow" and "That's The Tune" by Flying Colours, "To Be Back Home" and "I Brought My Love With Me" by NRG/Merriday Park, and "Baby Get Out" and "Set Me Free" by Portland Street South. ✨✧ VariousOff The Shelf – A Selection Of Tracks From Far Out & Solaria Singles Archive ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from one of the most important labels of the past few years – the groundbreaking Far Out imprint, known for its unique style of blending Brazilian and London grooves! The set features tracks from Far Out's oft-deleted singles series – hard to find 12" releases that often get only short release, and disappear much more quickly than the rest of the label's catalog. If you've missed some of these gems, or if you're like us, and sometimes prefer to put on a full album and save yourself flipping wax, the set's a great way to catch up – and probably introduce yourself to loads of great new music. Titles include "Khameleon" and "Second Future" by Difusion, "Ponteio" by Da Lata, "Colours" by Big Bang, "Smile" by Nature's Plan, "Strike Hard" by Trouble Man, "Brazil (Brazilian reprise)" by Democustico, "Faca De Conta (Roni Size rmx)" by Azymuth, "E Ruim/The Samba (4 Hero rmx)" by Grupo Batuque, and "Banzo Theme" by Banzo. ✨✧ Peter Ludemann & Pit TrojaNow Generation – Percussive Underscores ... LP
Coloursound Library/Be With (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Percussive underscores, but for the now generation – specifically the one that wants a bit more electronics in their percussion – as most of the set seems to focus more on electric drum styles than the acoustic instruments on the cover! That's hardly a problem, though – as the set's a great one from the time when sound library styles were getting a lot more lean – and the instrumentals here would fit nicely amidst an early 80s dancefloor, especially one that was borrowing some of the funky currents from global regions, and moving them into a more mainstream clubby vibe – ala 99 Records or Ze. There's still a bit of acoustic percussion too – although that might be sampled as well – and titles include "African Nightclub", "The Now Generation", "Panama", "Inorganic Matter", "Mechanical Heart", and "Nepal Trek".
