✨✧ Tony BennettSnowfall – The Christmas Album ... CD
Columbia, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer Christmas work from Tony Bennett – a set recorded in the 60s, but a classic that endures strongly over the years! Tony's vocals are superb here – that nicely matured style that's kept him in front of younger ears over the years – and the backings are somewhat traditional, but never stiff or cliched. Robert Farnon adds in some strings and chorus bits at times, but some of the best cuts have a jazzier flavor – and even the fuller-styled numbers fall back nicely to let Bennett's vocals dominate up front. Titles include "Christmasland", "I Love The Winter Weather/I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", "Winter Wonderland", "Snowfall", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "My Favorite Things", and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". ✨✧ Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Thanksgiving ... CD
Fantasy/LMFP, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue issue of this jazzy Peanuts classic – music that's delighted ears for decades, yet never got the same sort of commercial release as Charlie Brown Christmas music! As with that work, the music here all comes from the genius of Vince Guaraldi – and given the early 70s recording of the tunes, Vince definitely has updated his style since the 60s – using Fender Rhodes at times, and even having an electric sensibility to his acoustic piano work too – a sense of spacing and timing that's totally great! The core combo features a young Tom Harrell on trumpet, plus Chuck Bennett on trombone, Seward McCain on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – a very cool jazzy group. Vince sings on the wonderful tune "Little Birdie", which has some larger arrangements – and other titles include "Is It James Or Charlie", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Charlie Brown Blues", "Peppermint Patty", "Linus & Lucy", and "Thanksgiving Interlude". This expanded release features lots of great alternates on the themes – and the tune "Clark & Guaraldi", and "Is It James Or Charlie (bonus mix with whistling)". CD

Ralph SharonRalph Sharon Trio ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
One of the few albums as a leader cut by pianist Ralph Sharon – a player who's best known for his years supporting singer Tony Bennett, but who sounds really wonderful here in an instrumental setting too! Sharon's got a way of coming up both with a punch and a fluid sort of groove – that gentle swing that worked so well to ignite the jazzier side of Bennett's vocals – and which gets lots of room to open up with a voice of its own here! The rest of the trio nicely match Sharon's liveliness on the keys – with work from Jay Cave on bass and Christy Febbo on drums – and although most titles are standards, they're handled with a fresh approach that makes us wish we could hear more from Sharon in such a setting. Titles include "Steeple Chase", "Angel Eyes", "Bluz For Suz", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "Give Me The Simple Life". CD
