✨✧ ChameleonChameleon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A group that you may not know by name – but which features some top-shelf production at the helm – work by both Fred Wesley and Azar Lawrance, plus supervision from one of the Mizell brothers! With all that talent on board, the record's way more than just another obscure one-off funk set on a major label – as some cuts echo the sharp funk that Wesley was using with the Horny Horns at the time, and others have a bit of the cosmic currents from Azar's own records – a blend of jazz funk and fusion, honed into razor-sharp grooves with a bit of an 80s vibe! The whole thing's great – a real lost gem from that brief stint when Elektra Records was putting out some real killers in the soul department – and titles include "Unfair Affair", "We'll Be Dancin", "Mysteryoso", "Game Of Life", "Come Into My Life", "For You", and "Get Up". CD features bonus tracks – "Get Up (12" disco version)" and "We'll Be Dancin (12" disco version)". CD

Eri Yamamoto & Choral ChameleonGoshu Ondo Suite ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used ... $9.99
One of the most beautiful albums we've ever heard from pianist Eri Yamamoto – in large part because of the presence of the Choral Cameleon vocal group! The mix of piano and voice is wonderful – haunting and powerful, in a way that reminds us of some of the best Vince Guaraldi experiments of this type – but with a sharper edge, as you might guess from the piano of Yamamoto – and support from David Ambrosio on bass and Ikuo Takeuchi on drums! Sometimes the voices rise high and proud – as in a Max Roach jazz-with-voices album – other times they drift dreamily, providing more of a subtle ascendant current to the lines of the piano. Either way is great to our ears – a really wonderful record – and tracks feature the long "Goshu Ondo Suite", plus "Echo Of Echo". CD

Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagitarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maynard FergusonMaynard (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1970s/1981. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
A set of some the coolest material that the legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson cut throughout the 70s – from fiercely energetic, large combo takes on standards, to looser, more simmering styles of timeless jazz, to spacey jazz funk! Not to be confused with Ferguson's similarly titled early 60s set, this Maynard is a compilation of his creatively exploratory 70s years – on records like New Vintage, Live At Jimmy's, Carnival and the Bob James-produced Primal Scream – really showing the breadth of his astonishing range. Great stuff played with large groups and with Maynard at his most diverse. Includes "Airegin", "Stay Loose With Bruce", 'Round Midnight", "The Cheshire Cat Walk", "Chameleon", "Birdland", "Naima", "Got The Spirit" and more. This CD edition has 2 bonus tracks: the fun, funky "Rocky II Disco" and "Gabriel". CD

✨✧ Five SpecialSpecial Edition ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Classic funky soul from Five Special – tightly crafted throughout, and clearly with an eye on the charts – but also the kind of work that plays nicely on the dancefloor too! The record's got a groove that fits in nicely with some of the lesser-remembered groovers on Elektra at the time – like Shadow or Chameleon – with plenty of jazzy inflections in the rhythms, and a nice sense of 80s groove that keeps the uptempo tracks from being just copycat club. But the vocals here are especially nice, and sparkle even more on the ballads, which have a smooth and warm sound that's tight, yet never commercially cloying. Titles include "Do Something Special", "Heaven", "Who You Been Lovin", "Jam", "Choosin You For Me", and "Had You A Lover". CD

✨✧ Herbie HancockHeadhunters ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Very Good- ... $19.99
A seminal jazz funk session of the 70s – Herbie Hancock's legendary meeting with The Headhunters, and a killer batch of tunes that really gave the combo their name! Herbie's playing a wide range of keys here – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp – but almost even better is the work from the rest of the group – including Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion! The earthier elements of the rhythm players really keep Herbie on track – bringing him back to the planet from previous trips into space, and helping him hit an all-solid, all-righteous funky groove! Titles include a great remake of "Watermelon Man", the classic original recording of "Chameleon", and the cuts "Vein Melter" and "Sly" – all nice and long! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear and center splitting. Vinyl plays with a click on "Vein Melter".)

Buddy RichVery Live At Buddy's Place ... CD
Groove Merchant/Unidisc (Canada), 1974. Used ... $2.99
Hard-swinging Buddy Rich from the prime early 70s years – not exactly an all-out funk affair, but still a great groover, with plenty of hip little big band numbers! The groove here is nice and lean – and Buddy and the group are working at Buddy's own club – hitting that trademark all-out Rich sound, but still leaving plenty of room for the soloists. The group's got some great soul jazz players – including Sonny Fortune on alto, Jack Wilkins on guitar, and Kenny Barron on piano – as well as some really smoking tenor work from Sal Nistico, who's always adaptable to a setting like this. The album's got a tasty version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", plus other nice tracks that include "Sierra Lonely", "Nica's Dream", "Billy's Bounce", "Cardin Blue" and "Jumpin At The Woodside". CD

✨✧ Herbie HancockFlood (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Sony/Get On Down, 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic double-length set from Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters – easily one of Herbie's greatest records ever, but originally only issued in Japan! Hancock is in tremendous form here – almost as if he's merging the grooves of the Headhunters album with the wilder electric modes of Sextant – stretched out in a live setting with Herbie on Arp, clavinet, and Fender Rhodes – in a very hip group with Bennie Maupin on reeds, Blackbird McNight on guitar, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion. Tracks are long, and move nicely between funky passages and soulful elements – at a level that's quite different from the double-live Japanese albums that Miles Davis recorded for Columbia at the same time. Titles include "Actual Proof", "Spank A Lee", "Hang Up Your Hang Ups" – and great remakes of "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Cali Tex, 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pretty darn cool stuff – and some of the rarest funky numbers you'll ever find! This great little set was put together by funky collector Josh Davis – and it's a totally fresh batch of tracks that digs through rare recordings that were cut by obscure groups working in colleges or high schools around the US during the 1970s! The focus is on funky material, and although the sources may be a bit suspect, the grooves are all pretty darn nice. The album features great versions of "Red Clay", "Soul Pride", "Loose Booty", "Chameleon", "Scorpio", and "The World Is A Ghetto" – as well as some very tasty originals of its own! The originals of this sort of record are always darn hard to find – and usually, they only ever have one good track – so with a compilation like this, how can you miss? CD

Gary Numan's looking mighty noirish on the cover – and the record continues that fantastic run of dark-edged electro pop that made the man one of the most important song stylists of his generation! A few tracks here are maybe more tuneful than before – with some surprisingly bright moments – but overall, the Numan vibe is still very much in place – and those trademark vocals are completely wonderful. ✨✧ VariousElectrical Language – Independent British Synth Pop 1978 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive look at a key moment in British music – that post-punk era when keyboards and electronics came into the mix, but weren't yet used in polished or commercial ways! The groups here really run the gamut – from some who'd later move into more noisy territory, to others who might change things up and go for the charts – almost all captured at their earliest, working for the wealth of tiny indie labels that sprang up in England once the forces of punk knocked down the walls of the major labels! The scope of sounds here is totally great – from moody, moogy analogue numbers – to other tighter electronic songs that burst and crackle with energy – sometimes instrumental, often vocal – and always a cut above. The package is a hardcover book-style one – with page after page of notes and images on the artists in the set – plus 4CDs that feature a total of 80 tracks – with music by The Passage, Thomas Leer, Box Of Toys, Poeme Electronique, Dalek I, Colourbox, The Normal, Alex Fergusson, Eyeless In Gaza, Bodhi Beat Poets, Two, The Fast Set, Play, Goat, Futurerhythm, David Harrow, Fiat Lux, Blue Zoo, Lori & the Chameleons, Tim Blake, Charlie's Brother, The Quarks, Hybrid Kids, Beasts In Cages, Naked Lunch, Edward Ka-Spel, The Mobile, Fad Gadget, Local Boy Makes Good, Chris & Cosey, Pink Industry, Music For Pleasure, and many more!
