New Skin for Leonard Cohen, who by 1974 was ready to start singing with a bit more flair, and do so over more textured arrangements – but still raw both emotionally and in the unglossy instrumentation! The core of the sound is still Cohen's voice, his words, and acoustic guitar – but this record brings in some ragged acoustic instrumentation and loose percussion, as well as some more layered strings, some winds, and backing vocals – Janis Ian among the vocalists. On later records, bigger productions would nearly choke the natural life out of Cohen's songs, but this is one of those totally great records where the change in sound would actually enhance the material in the studio – allowing for one of his best albums of the 70s. Quite a weird little record – part psychedelia, but with some really rootsy elements – and also some odd use of recorded music as well! The sound here is really mindblowing – experimental and trippy, but never too free or over the top – and the core instrumentation includes lots of fuzzy guitar, organ, and rough percussion – plus additional vocals in parts, and even a bit of sitar as well! The production abstracts some of the sounds nicely, but never too much – and at times a more traditional Japanese style of music lurks in the background, possibly as a brief nod to the Buddha in the title. Most unusually, though, is that the first track on the record features part of a David Axelrod album playing in the background! There's clearly an Axelrod influence going on – both in the structure and sound of the record – although the group also take things very much in their own direction too. A tight small combo set that celebrates that classic moment when tenorist Illinois Jacquet was part of the band of vibist Lionel Hampton – served up here by a quartet that features the great Danny Doriz on vibes and Michel Pastre on tenor – offering up a nicely lean take on the Hampton/Jacquet sound! The combo is rounded out by some great work from Cesar Pastre on Hammond organ and drums from Didier Dorise – keeping up the father/son theme of the record – on titles that include "The Chase", "Stolen Sweets", "Whirly Bird", "Robbin's Nest", "Bottoms Up", "Seven Come Elven", "Tempo's Birthday", "Nuages", and even a version of "Isn't She Lovely" taken in an old school mode. Way more than just a "boogie" album – as you might think from the title – and much more a hard-hitting batch of funky tunes, mixed with some even cooler laidback numbers! The album follows heavily off the style of Wild & Peaceful – mixing together the group's older crack rhythms with some newer, hipper, jazzier inflections – making for an incredibly powerful sound that really opens them up. Titles include the massively funky "Jungle Jazz" – a jazzy follow up to "Jungle Boogie" – plus some spiritual numbers that have a cosmic soul jazzy feel, like the tracks "Cosmic Energy", "Ancestral Ceremony", and "Winter Sadness". The whole thing's great – and other titles include "Mother Earth", "Caribbean Festival", and "Ride The Rhythm". CD

A wonderful bit of exotica from Tito Puente – an album done in collaboration with producer Marty Gold, and featuring a highly percussive sound that Gold himself was exploring on his own albums of the period! There's a heck of a lot of percussion on the set – in styles that mix both traditional Afro-Cuban modes with more exotic strands of rhythm – crafting a tapestry of sound that makes the album one of our favorites from Tito's years at RCA. An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. A really fantastic career-spanning collection of work from Aretha Franklin – the first we've ever seen to start with her earliest years, then follow the greatness of her voice and spirit as it blossomed strongly over the decades! Sure, most folks know Franklin's classic work on Atlantic – but this package features earlier sides for Chess and Columbia, later work from Arista – and a whole host of rare and unreleased material – plus special tracks from side projects that worked together to form a crucial part of Aretha's legacy over the years!
