Diahann Carroll gets some classy backings here – arrangements from Ralph Burns that really make these tunes come alive! Carroll's vocals are always great, but they seem to sparkle even more here than on other early albums – as Burns' backings feature unusual instrumentation and odd phrasing, which helps make the set way more than just another Harold Arlen songbook session. Sometimes the strings are dark and moody, and other nice bits include vibes and guitar – all helping to pull new energy out of tunes that include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "A Sleeping Bee", "My Shining Hour", and "What's Good About Goodbye". An amazing album produced and arranged by legendary Philly mastermind Larry Gold – the cello player/writer/arranger for MFSB – and a key player in the best Philly soul of the last several decades! Don Cello & Friends features Gold as Don Cello – and the friends include Black Thought of the Roots, McFadden & Whitehead, Carol Riddick, Gerald Levert, Kindred The Family Soul, Jaguar Wright, Bunny Sigler and others. The goal for the set was not only to celebrate the depth and rich history of Philly soul with a variety of vocalists, but to draw a direct parallel with the best of today's scene. It succeeds at both masterfully. Gold's production and arranging is lush and sparkling – and the vocalists bring the very best of their games. Black Thought's rhymes on the lead off remake of "No Stoppin'", with McFadden & Whitehead, sets the stage perfectly – think the Roots on Curtom, and that's about half the picture! Much of the album carries more of a classic soul sheen – smooth and sparkling, with just enough grit for a nice edge! A weird idea for a collection, but a great one too – a set that brings together a batch of train-themed tunes from the 60s, and uses the transportation narrative as a way to unlock ideas of personal freedom and social change! The "train" here isn't just a gimmick – and instead focuses on the way that the mode of transportation helped open up new ideas and new vistas in the postwar years – a way of getting out, and getting past – served up here in a range of soul, blues, and other styles too! A real treasure from the Cali scene of the 70s – the one and only album from drummer Spider Webb – and a wicked batch of bass-heavy grooves throughout! Spider's drums are definitely great, and his offbeat vocals are completely charming, too – but the basslines are what really drive the record – often with a slightly skittish quality that seems to hint at the more dynamic dancefloor modes to come on the New York scene of the early 80s – yet still fused nicely here onto a Fantasy Records blend of jazz, funk, and soul! Not everyone digs the later Captain and crew, but the early 80s efforts have finally gotten their just props after all these years – and we'll we'll come right out and say that this second to last album before Don Van Vliet hung up the music for painting has always sounded great to us! The Magic Band is incredible as always – with Jeff Morris Tepper, Drumbo French and Eric Drew Feldman's antics under the Captain's idiosyncratic vocalese. A blistering batch of soulful house tracks from Japan's Yukihiro Fukutomi – one of the best records of its type we've heard in years, and an instant classic in our book! The album features guest vocals by Liane Carroll, Carolyn Harding, and Josh Milan from Blaze – but the strongest talent on the set is Fukutomi – whose talent for blending soulful rhythms, acoustic percussion, and warm keyboards blows away most other work of the type we've heard! Tracks are all uptempo, but they've got a deeply beating heart that takes them way past house music, and into the realm of 21st Century Soul! A wonderful later album by Charles Mingus – recorded under the supervision of vibist Lionel Hampton, who's also playing on the set! The album's got a rolling groove that's a bit different from other Mingus work of the time – possibly a bit more optimistic and warm, although still carried off with a nice edge in the arrangements. Players include Woody Shaw, Ricky Rod, Dannie Richmond, and even Gerry Mulligan – and the use of vibes brings a new sense of tone and color to Mingus' world, in a way that we really wouldn't expect. Titles include "Just For Laughs (parts 1 & 2)", "Slop", "Caroline Keikke Mingus", "Farewell Farewell", "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Light", and "Fables Of Faubus". CD

One of the coolest compilations we've ever heard from Ace Records – a really special set that follows in the tradition of their other St Etienne cafe/pub collections – and like those gems, a very different package than usual! This time around, the duo of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (who you'll also know from the Croydon International label) focus on an overlooked strand of British sounds at the start of the 70s – music that's moody, often jazzy, and almost always touched with a hint of blue – a kind of melancholic moment after the heady 60s – one that takes into stock all the great changes that had happened in the music, but delivers them in this laidback style that's completely unselfconscious. This isn't singer/songwriter material, and it's not progressive either – although it carries light traces of some of the best of those scenes – and if we had to try to dig for a tag for these tracks at all, we might use the term "folk funk" that was bandied about years ago – for cuts that have a vibe that's complex yet personal, and lots of jazziness in the phrasing.
