Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-FergusonChicago Waves ... CD
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
A record that's a bit of a dream come true for us at Dusty Groove – a set that features two of our favorite contemporary musicians, recording at a unique venue in our fair city – with a vibe that makes the record one of the best we've ever heard from the pair! Carlos Nino was one of the first of the new generation of spiritual jazz musicians – playing in such modes when it seemed like most others had forgotten them – and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson was a frequent partner in those days, and has risen to have a great legacy of his own, both as a performer and arranger for larger projects! The setting here is spare, but has all the majesty of the best work from either musician – as Miguel plays a five string violin, expanded with lots of live effects – and Nino plays a variety of percussion, while also triggering larger soundscapes too – all with a very organic vibe, as the whole thing was recorded live at Chicago's Co-Prosperity Sphere. The album features one long suite, divided into eight sections – the last of which is the beautiful "Chicago Waves". CD
Also available Chicago Waves ... LP 20.99

Jamael DeanBlack Space Tapes ... LP
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Spiritual sounds from the west coast underground – and a set that's maybe got a few more avant moments than other records of this kind! Jamael Dean plays piano in a shifting landscape of musicians – one that features percussion and production from the great Carlos Nino, some strings from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, alto from Devin Daniels, tenor and flute from Aaron Shaw, and drums from Tim Angulo. The tunes rise up in a bold spirit that's not afraid to step outside at some key moments, but also returns more to the cosmic flow of the tunes – maybe a bit like Alice Coltrane might get free at some points on her Impulse Records albums, but never lose sense of the message. The sound here is very different than just a straight Coltrane mode, though – as there are some keyboard moments, and a real shift in mood between each track on the set – especially when there are slight vocal contributions from Sharada Shashidar. Titles include "Akamara", "Adawa", "Kronos", "Olokun", and "Emi". LP, Vinyl record album

Alabaster DePlumeTo Cy & Lee – Instrumentals Vol 1 ... CD
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
Beautifully meditative music from Alabaster DePlume – a set that brings together work from a variety of recorded projects from the past decade or so – finally getting full exposure in this Transatlantic collaboration between Chicago's International Anthem label and London's Total Refreshment Centre! The sound is a great illustration of the genre-crossing modes that have been going on in both scenes – as Alabaster's music is definitely beyond easy description or definition, and comes across in a way that's as personal as it is collaborative – since DePlume works with a whole host of different musicians on the recordings, mixing flute, percussion, strings, keyboards, and other elements together in a way that follows a spiritual legacy from the more spacey side of Alice Coltrane, to the west coast experiments of Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, to the changes taking place on the planet at present. Alabaster plays tenor and guitar, and vocalizes slightly – but never really sings – and titles include "Why Buzzardman Why", "Not My Ask", "Whisky Story Time", "If You're Sure You Want To", "What's Missing", and "Song Of The Foundling". Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings ... CD
International Anthem, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 13.99
Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The whole thing is fantastic – and titles include "The Count Off", "Brighter Days Beginning", "Universal Beings", "Mantra", "Young Genius", "Holy Lands", "Wise Man Wiser Woman", "Prosperity's Fear", "Atlantic Black", "Flipped Out", "Voila", and "Suite Hans". Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings E & F Sides ... CD
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A really great idea for a record – and one that echoes the same "E & F" mode that Makaya McCraven brought to his previous album! The approach here is as unique as the drummer himself – in that McCraven went back to the sessions for the core album, and pulled out material that's recast into a completely different record altogether – not a remix project, or a batch of alternate takes – but new music from the ground up, as Makaya continues his groundbreaking style of using live jazz performance as the basis for a record that's eventually cut-up and reassembled! Performances were recorded in Chicago, Cali, Brooklyn, and London – with players who include Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Dezron Douglas on bass, Ashley Henry on Fender Rhodes, Nubya Garcia on tenor, Jeff Parker on guitar, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on violin, Carlos Nino on percussion, Junius Paul on bass, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor – an amazing lineup that gets plenty of space to shine in the hands of Makaya. Titles include "Everybody Coo", "Mak Attack", "The Hunt", "Beat Science", "Kings & Queens", "Traveling Space", "Butterss Fly", "Universal Beings Part 2", "Her Name", "Half Steppin", and "The Way Home".
