Les McCannInvitation To Openness ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
Wild electric work from Les McCann – an album of free, open sounds that's quite a change from his styles of the 60s – and from most of his other work of the 70s too! Side one features an extended 26 minute track titled "The Lovers" – a slow-building number that has Les on sublime Fender Rhodes, as things build slowly with this really spiritual current that comes from the addition of Yusef Lateef on reeds, Cornell Dupree and David Spinozza on guitar, Corky Hale on harp, and both Bernard Purdie and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The track is loose, but builds into some great funky moments – almost a keyboard version of electric Miles Davis at the time, but a lot more soulful. And side two continues the heavy keyboard vibe – with a killer remake of Les' classic "Beaux J Poo Poo" and a similar "Poo Pye McGoochie", both with the kind of choppy funky grooves Les laid down with Eddie Harris a few years prior! LP, Vinyl record album
(1841 Broadway label pressing. Cover has ring wear with a peel spot in the middle, light surface wear, small top seam split.)

Rudy Ray MooreDolemite For President ... LP
Kent, 1972. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Rudy Ray Moore takes the White House – or at least tries to – in this cool 1972 album that must have been a great antidote to the campaigns of Richard Nixon and George McGovern! The set starts with Rudy running his way through a whole bunch of campaign issues – including "Free Love" and "Mary Wanna" – all delivered in faux politico mode, with a crowd cheering him on, and an introduction that features music from "Exodus"! The rest of the set is a bit more typical Dolemite material – almost even more raunchy than the presidential mode – and other titles include "Dance Of The Freaks", "Bulldaggers", "Good Pussy Lil", and "Sit In Your Mama's Lap". Language is raw – so be warned! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PoguesRum Sodomy & The Lash ... LP
Stiff, 1985. Near Mint- ... $49.99
Tremendous work from The Pogues – a group who may well have hit their height with this record! Producer Elvis Costello made it his mission to stay the hell out of the way and just capture the band in all their shambling, boozy glory, and that he does. Underneath his slurred vocals, Shane MacGowan was starting to become one of greatest songwriters ever – and the band's punk-fueled take on Irish acoustic is delivered with superb musicianship throughout – more than enough to make you realize that they're the real deal, and not some hybrid gimmick – breathing new life into a world that had been watered down a bit too much by the aging folkies. Includes "The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn", "The Old Main Drag", "Wild Cats In Kilkenny", "Dirty Old Town", "Jesse James", "Billy's Bones", "The Gentleman Soldier", "A Pair Of Brown Eyes", and "Navigator". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original US pressing on MCA. A nice copy!)

✨✧ Ola KvernbergNight Driver ... CD
Jazzland/Universal (Norway), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully bracing title from this hip Scandinavian trio – one of the best recent releases on the mighty Jazzland label – very much up to the high standards of the imprint! The group here is a slightly unusual one – a trio with violin from Ola Kvernberg, plus bass and drums – all played in a way that's quite different than other violin jazz on the European scene – much more sound-based and textural, with the violin working in a way that's still melodic, but not in conventional ways. The bass here is especially strong – a richly pulsating sound from the hands of Steinar Raknes, which really pushes most tunes forward into very dark space – and the drums aren't bad either, done by Erik Nylander, with a spare snap that further echoes out the space. Kvernberg also sings, howls, and claps a bit – but his main contribution is violin – on titles that include "Lament", "Song Before Breakfast", "Music For A While", "Octacgon", "Haifas Steps", and "Adaptation Suite". ✨✧ Richie Havens, Tony Joe White, Lance Le GaultCatch My Soul ... LP
Metromedia, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very weird soundtrack to this equally weird film that mixes Shakespeare and religion, and which was directed by Patrick McGoohan! Most tracks have a funky folksy style – with lots of guitar, mixed acoustic and electric, as you'd expect to hear in the work of White or Havens. There are a few nice slightly funky moments with a good acoustic guitar in the front – but the best part of the tracks are the introductions, and they're generally made stupid by the vocals. Titles include "Catch My Soul (part 3)", "Chug A Lug", "Run Shaker Life", and "Put Out The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John WilliamsTowering Inferno ... LP
Warner, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice soundtrack, written by Williams before his over-the-top fame in the 70s – designed to accompany this big-budget disaster movie, one of Irwin Allen's last great films. The score is mostly orchestral, but has some very nice moments – especially in the warmer and calmer moments, two of which yield some very nice slinky groovers – gentle tunes in a 70s bossa style that almost feels like it could be lifted from a hip Italian soundtrack. The score also features a vocal number – "We May Never Love Like This Again", sung by Maureen McGovern – plus the 10 minute suite "Planting The Charges/Finale". Titles include "Susan & Doug", "Trapped Lovers", and "Something For Susan". LP, Vinyl record album
