Orchestra CometaDaydream – Musica Di Mirot-Stepchild-Lash ... LP
CEM (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99
One of the coolest albums ever from the legendary Cometa sound library – a set that's every bit as weird and wonderful as you'd guess from its cover image of a hand holding a flower with eyeballs on each petal! The music's maybe not as trippy as that picture, but it does have lots of cool and groovy touches – sweet Fender Rhodes at some points, jazzy reeds at others, and even some more evocative passages that almost have a deeper soundtrack vibe – but which soon return to the kind of tight, funky numbers that we love so much in Italian sound library material from this time! The players aren't named, but they're clearly top-shelf talents from the scene – and tracks include the funky "Rash", plus "Riddle", "Happy Fire", "Swallow", "Canty", "Diplomat", "Gadder", "Bike", and "Daydream". ✨✧ Alessandro AlessandroniAlessandro Alessandroni – Farfalla (Butterfly) ... LP
CEM/Cometa/Sonor (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from the great Alessandro Alessandroni – an artist who contributed to countless Italian soundtracks in the 60s and 70s, and who sounds even more amazing here in this rare set of sound library funk! The album's all instrumental, and is overflowing with groovy little tracks – which mix together a blend of jazzy, fuzzy, and dreamy elements – all of them pretty darn nice! The approach is great – leaner than some of Alessandroni's soundtrack material, and more direct too – with a vibe that's right upfront, as the tunes leap from sound to sound, style to style – but always in a nicely trippy version of instrumental funk. Titles include "Flautiana", "Invention", "Evolution", "Giovane Flirt", "Campeggiatori", "Arcipelago", "On The Boat", "Cielo Giallo", and "Acque Azzurre". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Auger's Oblivion ExpressReinforcements ... CD
Disconforme (Spain), 1975. Used ... $16.99
A great later sleeper from Brian Auger – a record that's much deeper and more soulful than some of his earlier work – and done in a soaring style that's really great! Alex Lighterwood sings as much as Auger plays the keys here, but that's ok with us – because he fuses his voice very nicely with organ, electric piano, and moog – creating a spacily soulful quality that's produced with a nice flanged-out style! Some tracks are funky, others are more laidback – and the set's a great illustration of how far Auger had come in just a few years. Titles include the spacey "Thoughts From Afar", the fast-jamming "The Big Yin", a Latin-tinged instrumental "Something Out Of Nothing", plus "Future Pilot" and "Brain Damage". CD

Don Cherry & FriendsBaden Baden Free Jazz Meeting – December 1967 ... LP
Alternative Fox (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $18.99
Four slices of genius from this important German jazz festival of the 60s – one of the leading showcases for the best in avant garde and experimental music! The sounds here are as stunning as the lineup – maybe even more so, as there's some nicely-unfamiliar, surprisingly collaborative passages going on – all of which really illuminate the studio music by these groundbreaking artists! The set begins with "Andalusian Proverb" – a beautiful showcase for the dynamic vocals of Jeanne Lee, as she sings with Gunter Hampel on vibes, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, and Pierre Courbois on drums. "Cubis" features a sublime trio with Marion Brown on alto, Peter Kowald on bass, and John Stevens on drums – and that rhythm duo also supports "Jepa", which features Mangelsdorff on trombone and Evan Parker on soprano sax – and "Relationship", which also features Parker – as well as Don Cherry on trumpet and Buschi Niebergall on second bass. Pino DonaggioA Venezia Un Dicembre Rosso Shocking (aka Don't Look Now) ... LP
Carosello (Italy), 1973. Sealed Gatefold ... $11.99
A really spooky soundtrack from Pino Donaggio – even if the instrumentation is somewhat standard! The music is for the great Nicolas Roeg film Don't Look Now – set in a slowly rotting Venice, and filled with moody mystery and hints of horror – but all elements that never fully get exposed or explained in the narrative! Donaggio's music is a bit like that – outwardly familiar, but always a bit unsettling – but in ways that are very different from the more direct approach of standard Italian horror work of the 70s. Fabio Frizzi/Walter Rizzati & Alessandro BlonksteinerLucio Fulci's Gates Of Hell Trilogy (City Of The Living Dead/The Beyond/House By The Cemetery) (3CD set) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980/1981. New Copy 3CD ... $44.99
Three Italian horror classics – packaged here in a single set! First up is Fabio Frizzi's score for Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi/City Of The Living Dead – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was one of the true masters of Italian horror! The sounds here are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – but the latter are often played in offbeat ways that they really sound electric – making for a moody mix of music that goes way beyond the usual spare slasher keyboards! A few numbers use wordless vocals, while others have nicely stepping strings – and a beefier bassline comes into play on a few standout funk tracks as well. Titles include "Toward Dawn", "Fatti Misteriosi", "Apoteosi Del Mistero", "Occhi Di Brace", and "Verso L'Alba". Next is Frizzi's Beyond/E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore L'Aldila – a very spooky soundtrack – and one that stands out as one of the best-remembered from this important second generation of Italian horror! The record's got less of the atonal orchestrations and funk/thriller modes of a few years before – and moves into the spare, eerie quality that John Carpenter helped usher in – with lots of crashing piano lines, atonal guitar parts, and weird descending chords that feel like they're going to suck you into the deep! There's some very nice and sparing use of synthesizer within the score – just the right bit to add a creepy edge, but maybe not as much as on other synth-heavy soundtracks from the time – and titles include "Voci Dal Nulla", "Oltre La Soglia", "Suono Aperto", "Verso L'Ignoto", and "Giro Di Blues". Walter Rizzati's score for Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero/House By The Cemetery has lots of keyboards – in a spare, spooky soundtrack from the early 80s Italian horror scene – a blood-dripping masterpiece from director Lucio Fulcio! Walter Rizzati's music here is heavy on the kinds of electric touches you'd hear from both Goblin or John Carpenter – and often paced at a level that's somewhere between the pair – not as jamming as Goblin, but a bit fuzzier than Carpenter – a blend that makes for some really wonderful numbers that are plenty creepy here on their own – even away from the images on the screen! There's plenty of great bits that creep up on you slowly – and others that jump mercilessly from dark corners – on titles that include "Quella Villa", "I Remember", "Incontro", "Blonk Monster", "Verso Il Terrore", "Voci Dal Terrore", "Tema Bambino", and "Chi Sta Arrivando". Reprise, 1990. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The final album by The Replacements – and a nice one, even if it's closer to a debut solo album for Paul Westerberg than it is to the rest of the 'Mats ouvre! This is a classic example of an album with strengths we either refused to acknowledge back in the day as Replacements classicists, or simply overlooked – but it sounds pretty damn good all these years later. Scott Litt's co-production is clean sound, but not too polished, and titles include "Merry Go Round", "One Week At A Time", "Nobody", "Bent Out Of Shape", "Sadly Beautiful", "Someone Take The Wheel", "When It Began", "All Shook Down", "Attitude", "Torture", "The Last" and more. ServicemenMeet The Servicemen – Classic Soul From Phoenix, Arizona (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Wind Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
Classic styled and classic worthy R&B vocal group soul from The Servicemen – a group based at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, AZ – a mix of uptempo productions and sweet acapellas cut in '66 & '67! A few numbers have lit up the UK Northern Soul scene in the past decade or so, but for the most part this material has languished undiscovered, and it's well worth checking out. The rhythms are tight and sharp, and there's some nice production touches on some of it, including some vibes and solid horn arrangements, but the focus is on the group vocals, left to lead the way on the acapella versions. A mix of uptempo numbers and ballads, with titles including the main and acapella versions of "Are You Angry", "I Need A Helping Hand" and "My Turn", "I'll Stop Loving You", "Close Your Eyes", "Right Around The Corner", the acapellas "Come Back To Me" and "Why Can't You Be True". StereolabTransient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements (3LP pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Elektra/Duophonic, 1993. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
The title's a mouthful, but it's also a key calling card for the legendary Stereolab – a group who effortlessly compressed the space between the 60s and 90s with this major label debut – and set a course for mainstream music well into the 21st Century! After the space of many years, the set still blows us away – and really lasts a lot longer than most of the supposed classics by their contemporaries – proof that the group were always using the past to see far far into the future! And although they got their start in the indie world, they really used the platform of Elektra to refine and focus their message – instead of being swallowed in the maw of Warner Brothers, Stereolab take up the challenges of greater professionalism – and hone their skills to an impeccable edge, crafting beautiful little tunes that are every bit as compelling as the promise of the album's title makes them out to be! Titles include "Tone Burst", "Golden Ball", "Pack Yr Romantic Mind", "Paus", "Jenny Ondioline", and "Analogue Rock". Fantastic version – with new remastering, and a full bonus disc of demos and alternates! LP, Vinyl record album

Reactive (UK), 1974/1976. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
Tangerine Dream at their spacey 70s best – working here on two extended live performances that have a very trippy vibe! The work almost feels improvised at times – not in a noisy way, but very stretched out and open-ended – as there's not really any individual songs from the group, just these very extended passages of electronics that build and shift in really beautiful ways – that core essence of the group that was in its prime flower here! The package features four discs, with no individual tracks listed – two different performances recorded in Reims Cathedral in 1974, with fantastic spacey echo – and one long concert from Mannheim in 1976, with parts one and two of the set, and then two shorter "encore" tracks too. Box also includes a booklet and poster too! CD

The "mystery" in the title is very well-placed here – as Web Of Mystery did a great job of mixing together postwar horror and mystery modes – often beginning each tale like some sort of parlor detective story, with a key question at the forefront – before then moving into more horrific content that definitely doesn't provide a Scooby Doo ending! The publication was short-lived, but is well-remembered – and six rare issues are presented here in a great hardcover volume, complete with covers and back cover ads – graced by great artwork from Warren Kremer, Mike Sekowsky, Ken Rice, Jay Scott Pike, Martin Rose, Ace Baker, and others. There's plenty of weird horrors within – ghosts, ghouls, and even a Medusa head – served up here in a nicely gritty style! Weird Horrors was one of those comics that liked to shock with hints at a variety of inside stories on the front cover – a bit like mid 50s Marvel anthologies, although the publication was done by St John – who could come up with a steady slew of scripters and artists to really keep the variety fresh! Some of the material is a bit rough around the edges, but that's also part of the appeal – and a few clunkers are mixed with much stronger artwork, which balances out the five large issues contained in the book. Art is by Bob Forgione, Gus Ricca, George Tuska, Charles Sultan, Paul Gattuso, Don Perlin, and others. Book

A fantastic collection of space age sci-fi and horror comics – served up here with full color reproductions of the contents, the covers, and even the ads! The work is from the 50s powerhouse of Charleston Comics – kind of the low-budget answer to DC, but a company that brought loads of great talent into the mix – and which has a nicely rough around the edges vibe that makes most of these stories even creepier than they might be otherwise! The work is all from the comics code generation, but still has a no holds barred sort of vibe – with a very cool mix of themes and stories throughout. Ahhh . . . The young genius of The Replacements! A bit punk, a bit garage, with a heartfelt quality that you didn't always find in indie rock at the time. These rough hewn gems are already as brilliant as they can be – shiny little diamonds that show Westerberg and crew working at top form, possibly topper than they'd ever be at in later years. Every single track is fantastic – and the album dances from number to number with delight, an endless array of great hooks, soulful vocals, and searing guitar bits that are laid out with early 80s economy! Titles include "Take Me Down To The Hospital", "Run It", "Color Me Impressed", "Within Your Reach", "Buck Hill", and "Treatment Bound" – and it's finally, after all these years, been carefully remastered! Some of the coolest horror comics of the 50s – the legendary Black Cat Mystery from Harvey Publications! Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD

Autumn/Trading Places (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
The first full album from The Beau Brummels – an early Autumn Records effort before their headier days at Warner – cut with a style that could well make the group a key force to stop the British Invasion of the 60s! There's a great sense of jangle-pop throughout – a slight twang that would later unfold in different ways in Bradley's Barn, but which here works to give the tunes this little sense of sadness amidst the warmer melodies – which themselves are particularly great, and much better-crafted than some of the other US groups of this nature at the time. The boys definitely borrow a bit from The Beatles (including a name that gave them placement right next to the fab four in the record racks) – but maybe they're also drawing on some of the folk harmony groups from the SF scene they called home, too. Arthur BlytheRetroflection – Live At The Vanguard ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $13.99
A great showcase for the alto talents of Arthur Blythe – a set that's maybe a bit more stripped-down than some of his bigger label albums of the 80s, but in a way that really lets you focus on his strength of tone and phrasing! The group's a quartet, working in an open live setting – John Hicks on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Bobby Battle on drums – and while all players certainly know how to go inside, they keep things swinging and relatively straight at the core – while Blythe waxes beautifully on the alto, with these sharp edges that mix nicely with more lyrical moments. Titles include "Jana's Delight", "JB Blues", "Lenox Avenue Breakdown", "Faceless Woman", and "Peacemaker". CD

Leonardo V BocciaHomenagem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lugar Alto (Brazil), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". Fat Beats, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Brownout sound heavier than ever here – recording in Texas, not Berlin (that's the last name of the producer) – and with a fantastic blend of deep funk, Latin elements, and lots of psychedelic touches! In fact, there may be more of that last aspect here than ever before – possibly because the guitar lines of Adrian Quesada get lots of strong placement in the mix – but also because the percussion, vocals, and other acoustic elements are all fused together in the mix in a really great way – this kind of wide wash of sound that's nice and dirty at all the right moments. Titles include "Seamus", "Nain", "Somewhere To Go", "Upon This Rock", "You've Got To Change", "Brownie", "Hold Your Way", "In Between", and "After November". CD

Leon BryantMighty Body (Hotsy Totsy)/Finders Keepers (with bonus track) ... CD
De-Lite/Solid (Japan), 1981/1984. New Copy ... $13.99
A pair of great records from Leon Bryant – both from the late De-Lite Records years, and offered up here back to back! First up is Mighty Body – a set also known as the self-titled Leon Bryant album – overlooked genius from Leon – a singer with a hell of a voice, and a range that can go from very low to super-soaring at the drop of a hat! And fortunately, that style works great here for the later De-Lite Records approach – funky club at its best, with grooves that are already great before Bryant steps into the mix – then find a special sort of magic, thanks to Leon's voice! There's also a good mix of balance, here – as the upbeat groovers are blended with some nice midtempo cuts, and one great stepper too. Titles include "Something More", "Come & Get It", "Just The Way You Like It", and "You Can Depend On Me". Next up is Finders Keepers, a record that would have been huge, had it gotten the kind of mainstream placement it deserved – which would have let the world hear what a great singer Leon Bryant could be! The set's got some top-shelf arrangements from Jimmy Mack and Sonny Sanders – both of whom are sliding perfectly into an 80s soul groove here, but still with all the hipper indie touches of the early years – which means that the whole thing perfectly avoids cliche or commercialism, while also giving Bryant the right sort of sophisticated vibe that works well with the depth of his voice. The range is almost one that we'd rank right up there with DJ Rogers – although with less of the spiritual vibe – and titles include "Are You Ready", "Honey", "Finders Keepers", "Your Kind Of Lovin", and "I Can See Me Loving You". CD also features the bonus track "Mighty Body (original 12" version)". CD

James Burton & OthersCannonball Rag – Early Groups & Sessions ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
A massive look at the work of guitarist James Burton – a musician who only cut a few records under his own name, but who was hugely important for his session contributions to both rock and country music in the 50s and 60s! Burton's one of those guys for whom the term "picker" was coined – the kind of cat who could show up, guitar in hand, and bring something really special to a session – a strong guitar lead that almost seemed effortless, and which was often the final element to cement the strength of a hit record! This collection focuses on key Burton contributions to the work of a number of different artists, both country and rock – in a set of 35 tracks that includes work by James Wilson & The Jimmie Cats, Maylon Humphries, David Houston Bob Luman, Dale Hawkins, The Shadows, Ricky Nelson, Dorsey Burnette, Tommy Cassel, Bobby Lee Tramwell, The Green River Boys, and The Shacklefords – most of whom are featured here on a few tracks each, all with guitar by Burton. What can we say? Classic Vee Jay material by The Iceman, and some of the most sophisticated soul you'll ever hear. Sure, this album may be a collection of singles pulled together to make an LP, but that was stock in trade for so many labels throughout the 60s, and well into the next couple of decades. 12 tracks in all, including Jerry's big hit recording of "Moon River", plus other a nice batch of other excellent and lost numbers like "Giving Up On Love", "Isle Of Sirens", "Where's The Girl", and "How Beautifully You Lie". Jerry ButlerIce Man Cometh ... CD
Mercury/Intermusic (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CD

Fantastic work by Chicago Iceman soulster Jerry Butler! Jerry's moving past the harmony formula of his earlier years with The Impressions, into a sophisticated style that would forever change the sound of male vocal soul. Jerry's a wonder with this material – delivering heartfelt tearjerkers in a mature style that had hardly ever been explored in the R&B market, yet still swinging with a good raw quality wherever the nature of the material called for it. Titles include "How Beautifully You Lie", "Such A Feeling", "Isle Of Sirens", "You Can Run But You Can't Hide", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Message To Martha", "You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)", "Giving Up On Love", and "Whatever You Want". Some of the tunes have a pre Big Star catchiness, with some acoustic guitar and drum led parts that really generate a lot of heat, and more with a free wheeling, experimental sensibility with languorous soundscapes, and bits of sax and flute. They have the hooks and the power of the better remembered rockers of the day, without the staleness and cheesiness of many of the superstars of the era, and a more varied and unpredictable range. Beautifully icy vocals from the amazing Chris Connor – the kind of record that set a new standard for vocal jazz back in the 50s! The session's a small group one – with Chris singing intimately alongside backing from Herbie Mann on flute and tenor, Kai Winding and JJ Johnson on trombones, Joe Puma on guitar, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all lightly arranged to allow Connor's vocals prime placement in the record, while shading in the spaces with some nicely modern colors. Titles are mostly familiar, but wonderfully transformed into Connor's own personal statements – and tracks include "Ridin High", "It's All Right With Me", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "All Dressed Up With A Broken Heart", "All This & Heaven Too", "Trouble Is a Man", "Blame It On My Youth", and "The Thrill Is Gone". Stax/Volt, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic album by The Dramatics – with a harder funkier sound than you'll find on most of their other records of the time – a gritty gem from the group's early years, and a record that really deserves its placement on the Stax label! The record has the group moving into a post-Temptations style of righteous soul – grooving hard with a really heavy bottom on funky numbers like "Get Up and Get Down" and "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get", and even dropping a bit of a drug reference on the cut "Marry Don't Cha Wanna" – one of those messed-up lyric numbers we'd expect from a Latin Soul group! But the album's also got a sweet side too – as it features the amazing ballad cut "In The Rain", which has some of the most amazing production you'll ever find on the Stax label – harmony work that rivals the greatness of the east coast scene of the time. Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". The set's a bit more varied in moods than some of Flack's previous Atlantic efforts – showing a stretching of wings from Roberta, but still very much in some righteous territory overall – given that Eugene McDaniels is overseeing the record on production. Arrangements are by Harry Whittaker, Hugh McCrackin, Leon Pendarvis, and Roberta herself – and instrumentation is warmly electric, yet never too slick to wash away the deeper soul of Flack's vocals. An insane amount of middle-period work from Fleetwood Mac – presented here with lots of bonus tracks, and a never-issued live set from 1974! There's lots of ways to approach these records – as the long path leading up to Rumors, or the post-Peter Green years when both Christine McVie and Bob Welch had such a strong influence on the group's sound, or maybe just the initially overlooked moments of a group who would go on to shape the sound of mainstream music for years to come – really finding a way past their more blues-influenced early years, marking the kind of musical journey that made 70s rock so much different than its roots. The box features the full albums Then Play On, Kiln House, Future Games, Bare Trees, Penguin, Mystery To Me, and Heroes Are Hard To Find – plus a great live set, recorded at The Record Plant on December 15, 1974. Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". Jneiro JarelAfter A Thousand Years ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Jneiro Jarel has always been way more than just a hip hop producer – even his earliest records were a bit hard to peg, and this excellent set not only pushes that bar forward a heck of a lot, but it also firmly suits the album's placement on the Far Out label! Far Out's best known for its recordings of Brazilian music – and there's some surprising currents of that scene here – amidst funkier bits, spacier sounds, and this wonderful weaving of so many different elements, both acoustic and electric – all done without any sort of gimmick, or that style that others might have – of hiding their real skills or ideas behind to much front-end production. Instead, Jneiro really lets things flow at an organic level – and opens the door along the way for guests who include Jarel Gilyard, Capital Peoples, Mel Owens, Bill Summers, and Dr Who Dat. Percussion and acoustic elements are more important here than some of the previous hip hop touches – and there's a cosmic vibe to the record that's very much in keeping with its cover. Titles include "Africa Bahia Sol", "If I Could See Heaven Without Dying", "Ce Les Tial", "Sunwakers (parts 2 & 3)", "Let The Cuica Play", and "Broken Arted". CD

A later set by Just Ice – produced by Grandmaster Flash – and record that sounds a lot better than we remembered! Tight, hard hitting dawn of the 90s beats from Flash and that gruff, tight rhyme delivery from Just-Ice. It might not be a masterpiece on par with Kool & Deadly, but it's plenty tough to our ears after all these years. Includes "Get Into Something", "The Iceman Cometh", "Slow, Low & Dope", "Rollin With The Just", and "I Write This In The Dark" with Angie B of The Sequence, known today as Angie Stone! CD

KashifCondition Of The Heart ... LP
Arista, 1985. Sealed ... $6.99
An 80s soul classic from Kashif – an artist who really helped transform R&B at the time, all without the benefit of a last name! The album's completely arranged and produced by Kashif himself – cementing the reputation he'd begun working behind other artists in the earlier part of the decade before going onto greater fame as a solo act on his own – a rock-solid approach to soul music that bristles with the best innovations of the 80s soul generation. Most tunes are heavy on beats, but use them in just the right ways – and keyboards provide a good amount of the rest of the instrumentation, but fleshed out strongly so that they work well next to the vocals. Tunes are a nicely balanced blend of mature male soul and some slightly catchier groovers – and titles include "Botha Botha", "Dancing In The Dark", "Movie Song", "Say You Love Me", "Stay The Night", and "Condition Of The Heart". ECM, 2011. Used ... $9.99
Alto sax and all around jazz legend Lee Konitz playing with a great group of players – drummer Paul Motian, double bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Brad Helhdau – captured live at New York's fabled Birdland, in December of 2009! There's really no need to qualify assessments of Konitz's performance with a note about his age, he simply sounds terrific here on a set that's fairly easygoing in approach, but still quite dexterous! Includes fresh, unique takes on "Loverman", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Solar", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and "Oleo". CD

Bob Marley & The WailersNatty Dread (with bonus track) ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1974. Used ... $4.99
A breakthrough album from Bob Marley – a set that was recorded equally in Kingston and London, and which has a globe-spanning vibe to match! Marley's star had already been rising by the time of this set – but this album helped cement both his lasting power, and the worldwide influence of the music that Jamaica was bringing forth – served up by a sharp lineup that includes Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, Carlton Barrett on drums and percussion, Touter on piano and organ, and Al Anderson on lead guitar – as well as soulful backing from the I-Threes. A good chunk of the record was recorded at Harry J's – not as tightly as some of the later Island Records material – and titles include the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". This reissue includes a 10th bonus track, "Am-A-Do". CD

Nick can spin out flurries of notes one minute, then hit spacious, thoughtful passages the next – energy that's really balanced out by the amazing work of Frank Rosaly on drums, and the strong placement of Anton Hatwich's sounds on the bass – served up at a level that's bold enough to match the fast-thinking creativity of both Rosaly and Nick. A killer from keyboardist Max Middleton and guitarist Robert Ahwai – a set that has a tight funky feel on most numbers – very much in the most soulful American styles of the time, with some of the impeccable placement that you'd also find on Japanese soul fusion classics from the 70s! Ahwai's guitar is nice and compressed – never overdone, and a perfect accompaniment for Middletone's keyboards as they slide alongside some nicely tight grooves. East West/Now Again, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
An astonishingly rare treasure by exotic jazz genius Lloyd Miller – originally issued by East West Records in a run of just a few hundred copies! Recorded at The University Of Utah, it's a wonderful synthesis of the eastern and otherwise globally-inspired instrumentation Miller is beloved for, and the western jazz styles of his earlier years playing behind Don Ellis, Eddie Harris & others. Recorded with players from the university's jazz ensembles, along with several numbers with the Mike Johnson Quartet, it came a time when Miller was becoming so well educated in Far Eastern, Middle Eastern and Asian music and culture, and was already such a seasoned American jazz player himself, it's really stunning this set is such a rare one! Amazing stuff from a late 60s period when he was really starting to cement his legend. Includes "Amber Eyes (Guzel Gozler)", "Yona", "Natanie", "Blue Rue", "Sixty Years Of Jazz", "Gol-E Gandom", "Hue Wail", "Sakura", "Impressions Of Bhairavi Raga" and "Midsummer Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeIl Grande Silenzio/Un Bellissimo Novembre ... CD
Beat (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Beautiful work from Ennio Morricone – 2 soundtracks from different genres of film, but both linked together nicely through their styles! Il Grande Silenzio is a spaghetti western, but Morricone's music for the film is remarkably sweet – done in that blend of light melody, isolated instrumentation, and slight electric touches that show up on some of his best work of the Mondo Morricone era. A few tracks are more dramatic or moody, but there's a great feel overall – set up by the theme "Il Grande Silenzio", and followed up by tunes that include "Viaggio", "Voci Nel Deserto", "E L'Amore Verra", and "Invito All'Amore". Un Bellissimo Novembre is a completely different style of film – one that deals with the flowering of young love – but it's also got some sweet Morricone themes that sparkle nicely, done with lusher string orchestrations, but also some key touches that include whistling and a bit of that trademark Morricone "boing"! Includes vocal and instrumental versions of the tune "Nuddu" – plus "Sensi", "Buio Mattino", and "Ancora Piu Dolcemente". CD

One of the wilder sets from Nillsson – careening from lovely piano pop with romantic vocals, to spaced out, good humored potty mouth excess – near honky tonk, to fuzzy pop rock – if you like Nilsson at his most unhinged, this is a great one! It's a stunner, actually – with somehow good-natured rageful tunes to sweeter odes to the ladies, it's Nilsson through and through. Soul Brother/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $26.99
One of the rarest soul records of the 70s – recorded in Germany by a bunch of American servicemen on leave, but with a sound that's right out of the Chicago or Detroit groove of the pre-disco years! The group's great with both the funky and soulful material – hitting hard with monster groovers like "Holes In My Shoes" and the jazzy break classic "Windy C", and keeping it sweet and mellow on ballads like "My Little Someone" and "Boarding Pass". The album's got a great sound overall – almost like some of the jazzy soul albums on Fantasy from the mid 70s – and the quality of the vocals and instrumentation is great throughout. Titles include "I Love You", "Bet You Say You Want To Make It With Me", "No More City, No More Country", and "You Keep Me Coming Back". CD

Bronze/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99
A record with a stunning cover by the great Roger Dean – and a stunning sound to match – one of the few sets ever issued by Paladin, a group who are a bit more hard-rocking than the Yes-like cover image might imply – but who also let loose with some great prog touches as well! The blend is maybe perfect for the group's placement on the Bronze label – an imprint that always seemed to bring out a bit more bite in its music – and while there's some long keyboard and organ solos, those are also balanced with some really searing guitar parts that ramp things up nicely. Titles include "Give Me Your Hand", "Well We Might", "Good Lord", "Mix Your Mind With The Moonbeams", "Watching The World Pass By", and "Get On Together". LP, Vinyl record album

A legendary set from the Canadian 60s underground – a landmark record from a group who've gone onto become huge over the years with psych collectors, even though they never cracked the charts (or the US market) at the time! The set's way more than just another obscure rock release – as it's got a sharpness, tightness, and sense of songcraft that matches some of the bigger names in the US scene at the time – put together with a style that knows when to open up, but never loses itself in self-indulgence either. There's some surprisingly strong harmonies throughout the tunes – which often have a fuzzy, rollicking edge, but without losing sight of the sunny groove – and titles include "Epistle To Paradise", "Shadows Of Your Mind", "Art's A Happy Man", "Bridge Under A Sky", the epic centerpiece "You Don't Care", "Face Behind The Sun", "Dainty General Rides", and "Civilization Machine". Really fantastic work from Prince – an album that's maybe not as famous as some of his 80s classics, but which has the maestro in perfect form throughout! There's all these warm jazzy currents in the music that we totally love – especially on the keyboards, which have a glow and flow that clearly seems to be Prince's way of showing the Neo Soul generation that he not only helped carve out the territory that first got them going, but also can still do it maybe better than anyone else! The album still has some of the heavier funk that Prince was always known for – but it's the warmer, mellower moments we totally love – on titles that include "Last December", "The Work", "Everywhere", "The Sensual Hereafter", "Muse 2 The Pharoah", "Deconstruction", "Wedding Feast", "1+1+1 Is 3", and "She Loves Me 4 Me". Sun RaLost Reel Collection Vol 3 – Shadows Took Shape ... CD
Transparency, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99
Quite an obscure little live set from Sun Ra – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the amount of live material he's got out there! The performance was found on a reel simply titled "Spacemaster Concert", and recorded at an undetermined date in the early 70s – and it's easily one of the starkest, most challenging recordings so far in the Lost Reel series! There's a fair bit of electric keyboards on the set – often played with some noisier tones, and offset with vocals by June Tyson, and instrumentation by John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Kwami Hadi. Many numbers are less orchestral than sparer small combo performances – and titles include "Outer Space/Untitled Improvisation", "Exotic Forest", "Shadow World", "Strange Worlds/Untitled Improvisation", "Stardust From Tomorrow", and "Friendly Galaxy/Watusi".
