Duke EllingtonAnd His Mother Called Him Bill (Bluebird pressing) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1968. Used ... $1.99
A nicely understated session that was recorded in honor of Billy Strayhorn – who'd passed away a few months before the recording. The set features all classic Strayhorn compositions – played in new versions by Duke and a group that includes Clark Terry, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Aaron Bell, and Jimmy Hamilton. The recording quality is great, and the sound of the album really makes old classics sparkle nicely once again! Titles include "UMMG", "Blood Count", "Boo Dah", "Rain Check", "Day Dream", "All Day Long", and "Lotus Blossom", done in a haunting solo piano version by Duke! CD

Duke EllingtonFar East Suite – Special Mix (Bluebird) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1966. Used ... $2.99
One of Ellington's greatest albums of the 60s – and a record tinged with Eastern themes and darkly angular modern arrangements. The group here features Ellington stalwarts Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, and Rufus Jones – and the players work together tightly to craft the suite of tracks based on Ellington's impressions of recent travels through the Mid and Far East during the 60s. Titles include "Tourist Point Of View", "Isfahan", "Depk", "Mount Harissa", "Amad", "Agra", and "Blue Pepper". Plus, the CD reissue features 4 alternate takes not on the LP! CD

Dave Pike/Charles McPhersonBluebird ... CD
Timeless (Netherlands), 1988. Used ... $11.99 16.99
Beautiful work from one of our favorite vibes players – a return to basic hardbop from Dave Pike, recorded in conjunction with soulful altoist Charles McPherson! Given the title, and the tunes, the set's ostensibly a tribute to Charlie Parker – but the tunes themselves are played in more open, introspective versions than Bird might have done, especially considering the use of the vibes! In fact, McPherson drops out for a number of tracks on the set, letting Pike take the main solos on some of the tunes, and even stepping aside for one piano trio-only number as well. Titles include "Old Folks", "Anthropology", "Ornithology", and "Bluebird". CD

Warmly mellow work from Steve Eaton – a singer with a nicely laidback take on blue-eyed soul, served up in some lean arrangements with a nice jazzy vibe – all a nice change from some of the bigger, more commercial work of the period! The indie approach of the set gives the whole thing the feel of a record from a half decade before – as Steve unabashedly puts himself forward vocally, while also handling both acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, piano, and more – with support from some equally easygoing session musicians too! Titles include the wonderfully groovy "Without Out" and "All In Love Say I" – plus "Got Me Moanin", "Rakin Leaves In The Wind", "Hurricanes & Tornadoes", "You're Not A Hero", "Friendly Stealer", and "Old Smart Big & Kind". ✨✧ Coleman HawkinsHawk In Hi-Fi (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bluebird/RCA, 1956. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful late album from Coleman Hawkins – recorded in 1956 with the orchestra of Billy Byers, including soloists Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Hank Jones. Coleman's the main blower, though – and the arrangements have a solid base that lets him open up in that exploratory tone he was crafting during the time. And although tracks are short, there's a heck of a lot of soul packed into them – recorded with impeccable quality, much more so than earlier sides. Titles include "I Never Knew", "Bean & The Boys", "The Essence of You", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Dinner For One Please, James", and "I'm Shooting High". Plus, the CD features 8 bonus tracks – all unreleased extra takes! CD

Coleman HawkinsHawk In Paris ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1956. Used ... $7.99
Well, Hawk isn't really in Paris on this one – as the album was recorded in New York, with backings by Manny Albam – but the spirit of Paris is very much alive on the tunes, which are a mixture of postwar French favorites, and others that have a similar sound. Albam's backings are light and gentle, and Hawkins tenor dominates all tracks, blowing easily and soulfully on well-placed solos. Titles include "La Chnouf", "April In Paris", "Mon Homme", "Under Paris Skies", "I Love Paris", and "La Mer". CD

Bluebird, 1988. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work from Carmen – one of her last great albums! The set was recorded in 1988 – but it's got an "instant classic" feel that makes it one of the best vocal jazz albums of its generation. Carmen's working with a small group that includes Charlie Rouse, Larry Willis, George Mraz, and Clifford Jordan – singing vocal versions of Monk classics like "I Mean You", "Blue Monk", "Well You Needn't", "Ruby My Dear", and "Ugly Beauty" – most of which have lyrics written by Jon Hendricks! This CD makes the original album even better – and throws in some bonus alternate versions of tracks on the album! CD

✨✧ Paul Desmond with Jim HallEasy Living ... CD
Bluebird/BMG, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Paul Desmond doesn't get any better than this – blowing his icy cool alto next to warm guitar lines from the mighty Jim Hall – a classic RCA Records pairing in jazz, heard to great effect on this classic album! There's a slight bossa groove to some of the rhythms, which is great for Desmond's sound – and the backing is also free of piano, so the guitar and alto hang together wonderfully by themselves – suspended in space, dipping and turning around each other beautifully! The pair get some very light rhythmic accompaniment from Connie Kay on drums, and either Percy Heath or Gene Wright on bass – on titles that include "That Old Feeling", "Easy Living", "Blues For Fun", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "When Joanna Loved Me". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "All Through The Night" and "Rude Old Man". CD

There's a huge amount of titles here, and nearly all of them are the stuff of legend. One of Lena Horne's greatest albums of the 50s – a rock-solid effort that takes its name from her famous film appearance of the 40s, but which features some wonderfully sophisticated songs in a very postwar mode! As with other RCA dates of the time, the orchestra's handled by Lena's partner Lennie Hayton – and has a nice jazzy pitch, especially on tunes that feature trumpet solos from Charlie Shavers. Titles include "Summertime", "Mad About The Boy", "Tomorrow Mountain", "Ridin On The Moon", "I Wonder What Became Of Me", and "Just One Of Those Things". CD features 10 more bonus tracks – including "Come Runnin", "From This Moment On", "I Have Dreamed", "Sweet Thing", "That Old Feeling", and "What's Right For You". CD

✨✧ Jeanne Lee & Ran BlakeLegendary Duets (aka Newest Sound Around) ... CD
Bluebird, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
An eerie album of modern jazz vocals – featuring the haunting voice of Jeanne Lee with the dark piano of Ran Blake. Most tracks feature only the two of them in duet – but a few feature Lee solo, and a few others have George Duvivier backing the pair up on bass. We like this stuff a lot better than much of Lee's later work – as it's still very much in a traditional jazz vocal realm, just pushed off-kilter a few notches or two, and painted with more abstract colors than usual. Lee's voice is nicely restrained, and has a dark Abbey Lincoln quality to it at the best moments. Titles include "Church On Russel Street", "Laura", "Love Isn't Everything", "Lover Man", "Season In The Sun", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". Plus, this CD reissue features 4 bonus cuts – including "Straight Ahead", "Vanguard", and "Left Alone". CD

Bluebird/RCA, 1957/1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
Oh how we love this one! This killer 2LP set takes one of Mingus' best-ever records, and makes it even better! The original Tijuana Moods album was recorded in 1957 but not released until 1962 – and the record features one of Mingus' strongest groups ever, with Shafi Hadi on alto and Clarence (aka Gene) Shaw on trumpet. If you've ever had any doubts about Mingus, this album will blow your mind! This great double set features original takes and alternate ones for every track on the album, including "Dizzy Moods", "Ysabel's Tabel Dance", and "Tijuana Gift Shop". 10 tracks in all – and one of the best bunches of Mingus you can buy! Bluebird, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Oliver Nelson's hippest albums – a bold statement of righteous energy, and a fantastic summation of all the genius he'd created during the 60s as an arranger for other people's records! The record is almost at a Duke Ellington level – a complex yet soulful suite of tracks for the post-60s years – complete with some sound effects of rioting and urban strife at the beginning, and a mix of modern, modal, and compositional styles that bursts out with pride and power that we wouldn't have heard in Nelson's music a decade before! The soloists are great – and the album features wonderful read work from John Klemmer, Frank Strozier, and Nelson himself – on great original titles that include "Self Help Is Needed", "I Hope In Time A Change Will Come", "Requiem Afterthoughts", "Lamb Of God", and "Martin Was A Man A Real Man". ✨✧ Phineas NewbornWhile My Lady Sleeps ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare "with orchestra" outing from pianist Phineas Newborn – one that has his gentle keys out front of larger backings by Dennis Farnon – all cast in the kind of dreamy mode you might expect from the title! Yet while the whole thing's certainly got a late night feel, Newborn's piano work is still quite strongly up in the mix – never smothered in strings, and instead often stepping along with the same force as some of his trio outings – but often set free from more rhythmic modes, in a way that makes for some of Phineas' most sophisticated stylings on RCA. Titles include "Lazy Mood", "Bali Hai", "If I Should Lose You", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", and "While My Lady Sleeps". CD

RCA/Bluebird, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tito Puente doesn't have far to "go jazz" – but he gets a nice push in the right direction by some added players from the RCA jazz scene of the time! The album's a stunner by any standards – a cooking Latin date, thanks to percussion from Tito and Mongo Santamaria – and a killer jazz one too, given the mighty horn talents of Gen Quill on alto, Marty Holmes on tenor, and Nick Travis and Bernie Glow on trumpets! The group's rounded out by Barry Galbraith on guitar and Alvin Gellers on piano – and the arrangements have that tight RCA punch of the time, but also pack a whole extra layer of soul – thanks to Tito's cooking rhythms. Puente plays a bit of vibes as well – and tracks include "That's A Puente", "Tiny Not Ghengis", "Lucky Dog", "Lotus Land", "Birdland After Dark", "Terry Cloth", "Yesterdays", and "Tito In". CD

The groove here is a mix of blues and funky soul – hipper than the usual blues set of the time, especially on the Leon Thomas tracks "Welcome To New York", "Damn Nam (Aint' Goin To Vietnam)", and "Disillusion Blues". RCA/Bluebird, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A double album collecting Newk's excellent quartet recordings with Jim Hall for RCA. As such it contains work from The Bridge and What's New?, plus a few numbers that got tacked onto the Standard Sonny Rollins. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowing late 50s sessions might not expect the album to work – but instead, it sets up his playing in a whole new mode that brings out a leaner, more confident, more sophisticated solo mode that shows that his time woodshedding in retirement was well spent. 13 numbers in all, including "John S.", "The Bridge", "You Do Something To Me", "Where Are You", "Without A Song", "If Ever I Would Leave You", "Brownskin Girl", "Don't Swtop The Carnival", "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", "My Ship", "Love Letters", "Long Ago (An Far Away)" and "God Bless the Child". A historic pairing of blues talents – one that only flourished for a few short years, but created some wonderful music together! Leroy Carr brings lots of jazz inflections to his work on piano, but the overall sound is definitely blues – thanks strongly to the guitar lines of Scrapper Blackwell, who really helps give the tunes a nice rough edge, and hammers home the punch of the lyrics too! This 20 track set brings together rare 78rpm recordings done mostly for the Vocalion label, plus a few Bluebird tracks as well – and titles include "How Long How Long Blues", "Gettin All Wet", "Love Hides All Faults", "Naptown Blues", "Baby Don't You Love Me No More", "Lonesome Nights", "When The Sun Goes Down", "Going Back Home", "Big Four Blues", and "Papa Wants A Cookie". Timeless (Holland), 1990. Used ... $6.99
Really special magic from pianist Tommy Flanagan – exactly the of record that shows why his approach to the piano can be so great – this wonderful balance of fuller rhythms and lighter lyrical moments – given some equal spin here by guitarist Kenny Burrell, whose work in the quartet is every bit as great as Tommy's! There's a nicely understated vibe to the record – but just because the players make things seem so effortless – such a command of their instruments the moments of beauty just keep coming at a level that's breathtaking once you stop to think about the way they're spinning things out! The group also features George Mraz on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – the last of whom is perfect here – and titles include "Bluebird", "Yesterdays", "Blues In My Heart", "Barbados", "The Con Man", and "Bluebird After Dark". A killer album that's one of Joe's best! Unlike some of his other records as a vocalist, in which the arrangements are a bit too cluttered to swing, this nice relaxed live set has Joe hitting a very soulful groove, and stepping out nicely on cuts like "Gravy Waltz", "Come Back Baby", "April In Paris", "Some Of This N Some Of That", and "She's Warm, She's Willing, She's Wonderful". Backing is by an all-star group that includes Coleman Hawkins, Junior Mance, and Zoot Sims – and the whole thing's got a fluid, easy feel that's totally great – and which gets past the usual Joe Williams cliches!
