Duke EllingtonAnd His Mother Called Him Bill (Bluebird pressing) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1968. Used ... $3.99
A nicely understated session that was recorded in honor of Billy Strayhorn – who'd passed away a few months before the recording. The set features all classic Strayhorn compositions – played in new versions by Duke and a group that includes Clark Terry, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Aaron Bell, and Jimmy Hamilton. The recording quality is great, and the sound of the album really makes old classics sparkle nicely once again! Titles include "UMMG", "Blood Count", "Boo Dah", "Rain Check", "Day Dream", "All Day Long", and "Lotus Blossom", done in a haunting solo piano version by Duke! CD

Duke EllingtonFar East Suite – Special Mix (Bluebird) ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1966. Used ... $4.99
One of Ellington's greatest albums of the 60s – and a record tinged with Eastern themes and darkly angular modern arrangements. The group here features Ellington stalwarts Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, and Rufus Jones – and the players work together tightly to craft the suite of tracks based on Ellington's impressions of recent travels through the Mid and Far East during the 60s. Titles include "Tourist Point Of View", "Isfahan", "Depk", "Mount Harissa", "Amad", "Agra", and "Blue Pepper". Plus, the CD reissue features 4 alternate takes not on the LP! CD

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieAlgo Bueno – The Complete Bluebird/Musicraft Recordings & The Pleyel Concert ... CD
Definitive/Disconforme (Spain), Mid/Late 40s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
During his early days on record, Dizzy Gillespie made some of his best recordings for some of the smaller labels in the business – labels that have never been the subject of proper reissue series. This is certainly the case with Diz's Bluebird and Musicraft sessions – both of which catch him at a prime early moment in the history of bop, developing his unique trumpet style, and fusing it with touches of Latin rhythms, vocalese, and a good dose of humor. This excellent 45 track 2CD set finally brings this great material to light in a decent form – and it also pairs it with Diz's legendary Pleyel Concert, offered up here with good remastering. Titles include "Cubana Bop", "Cubana Be", "Dizzier & Dizzier", "In The Land Of Oo-Bla-Dee", "Ool-Ya-Koo", "Afro Cuban Suite", "Algo Bueno", "Guarachi Guaro", "Minor Walk", and "Ray's Idea". Loads more, too! CD

Gato BarbieriThird World Revisited (aka Yesterdays) ... LP
Bluebird/RCA, 1969. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A beautiful record from Gato Barbieri – almost a return to more traditional forms, but still graced with the searching, burning quality that made most of his early 70s sides so great! The tracks are all long and exploratory – and have Gato blowing with that tremendous tenor tone – a mix of late Coltrane and Pharoah, with some warmer, sentimental touches that really send us. The rest of the group includes George Dalto on electric and acoustic piano, Pretty Purdie on drums, and Paul Metzke on guitar – and most of the tracks feature added Latin percussion – not too much, but just the right amount to make them bounce along in a rhythmic groove. Totally great all the way through, and with tracks that include "Carinoso", "Marnie", "A John Coltrane Blues", and "Yesterdays". LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyArt Blakey & His Jazz Messengers 1957 – Second Edition – Featuring Johnny Griffin ... CD
Bluebird, 1957. Used ... $9.99 12.99
Rare RCA work from Art Blakey – tracks from the Lerner & Lowe album, plus other 1957 material too! The core set is based on the music of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe – composers usually associated with the Broadway stage, brought into a whole new light here by the late 50s Jazz Messengers! The album's one of Art Blakey's more unusual outings – part of that great 1957 run away from Blue Note – but it cooks strongly with a lineup that includes Jackie McLean on alto, Johnny Griffin on tenor, and Bill Hardman on trumpet – all players who bring an unusual degree of bite to these tunes, while still reflecting the lyrical beauty within! The group sparkles and shines with the sort of brilliance and energy that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, completely transforming tunes that include "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Almost Like Being In Love", "On The Street Where You Live", and "There But For You Go I". ✨✧ Vince GuaraldiCharlie Brown Suite & Other Favorites ... CD
Bluebird, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare recordings by one of the grooviest piano players ever – the fab Vince Guaraldi, known for his famous work on the Charlie Brown cartoons of the 60s! This set features Peanuts-related material done by Vince on a number of different sessions – the core of which took place in 1968, and features "The Charlie Brown Suite", a set of tracks that feature Vince's trio performing with some added orchestral backings. The mood of these tunes is varied, as some have the core small combo sound of the cartoons – while others expand the themes a bit more with added orchestrations, taking the tunes into emotions and tonal ranges we wouldn't have expected – and which make us like Vince even more! Added to these "suite" tunes are a few solo piano ones, and a great live recording with Eddie Duran on guitar! Titles include "Linus & Lucy With The Band", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Happiness Is", "Peppermint Patty", "Charlie Brown Theme", "Rain Rain Go Away", "Red Baron", and "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". CD

✨✧ Sonny RollinsWhat's New? ... CD
RCA/Bluebird, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very unique album from Sonny Rollins – one that features him blowing tenor over some Latin-based rhythms that have a tight uptempo feel. The core group on the album features Jim Hall on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – but they're augmented by larger arrangements that mix together bossa nova and calypso rhythms, which forge a surprisingly great background for Rollins' gutsy tenor. Although it's easy to dismiss the record as a throwaway cash-in affair on the Latin boom of the early 60s – Rollins actually handles himself wonderfully, and the longer-than-usual tracks on the album show a whole new side of his talents that were later reprised on Latin sessions during the 70s. Titles include "Bluesongo", "Jungoso", "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", and "Brownskin Girl". CD

Beaver & KrauseAll Good Men ... LP
Warner, 1972. Very Good+ ... $4.99 6.99
A higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! A fair bit of tracks here have vocals – either by Krause, or by female vocalists Cris Williamson, Adrienne Anderson, or Elisabeth Wilson – plus the "celestial choir" on a few tracks. There's a hearkening back here that's a bit confused at some moments – mixing Scott Joplin with the then-common apology to Native American mode – but things sound best on the original numbers, which have picked up a groove a bit more than before, and even have some nice warmer tones we really like. Titles include the spacey spinner "Between The Sun & The Rain", plus "Loves Of Col Evol", "Sweet Williams", "Bluebird Canyon Stomp", "Looking Back Now", "Child Of Morning Sun", and "All Good Men". Beaver & KrauseIn A Wild Sanctuary/Gandharva/All Good Men ... CD
Warner/Righteous (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 22.99
A trio of classics from this electronic duo – all brought together in a single set! First up is In A Wild Sanctuary – one of the best records ever from Beaver and Krause – largely because there's not so much noodling! This one features the pair on moog and organ, with help from Dave Grusin on piano, Milt Holland on percussion, Howard Roberts on guitar, and Bud Shank on reeds. The sound isn't jazz at all – but more a mix of spacey grooves and bubbling bits, with much more of a song-like structure than on other records. There's a few nice cuts here that almost hit a groove, and even when they don't, they still have a nice stripped down moogy sound that's very pleasing. Titles include "Spaced", "Salute To The Vanishing Bald Eagle", "People's Park", "Walking Green Algae Blues", and "Another Part Of Time". Gandharva is a cool mixture of rock and electronics – a perfect example of the Beaver & Krause team at their best! The ensemble on this one is bigger than usual, and the players includes jazz musicians like Mike Bloomfield, Gerry Mulligan, and Howard Roberts – but Beaver & Krause still play a lot of moog, though, and the songs are pretty groovy – although a little short. Side 2 was recorded at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Titles include "Soft/White", "Walkin By The River", "Walkin", "Nine Moons In Alaska", "Bright Shadows", and "Short Film For David". All Good Men is a higher concept album than usual for the team of Beaver & Krause – a record that still features plenty of cool moog and electronics by the pair, but which also has them teamed up with arranger Jimmie Haskell in a set of tunes that mixes older themes with original numbers! A fair bit of tracks here have vocals – either by Krause, or by female vocalists Cris Williamson, Adrienne Anderson, or Elisabeth Wilson – plus the "celestial choir" on a few tracks. Jasmine (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A really well-done dip into the New York City blues scene of the 50s – one that presents a wealth of work we might not have heard otherwise, pulled from labels that include Old Town, Harlem, Jax, Wing, Dog, and Groove! There's a nice mix of material here that really shows the way the city was able to act as a crossroads for styles that were not necessarily homegrown, but could certainly find a home in its diverse community – as some cuts have more of a rural bent, others have some of the more electrified touches that were coming into urban blues, and a few have some of the jump/jazz styles of the R&B generation. Titles include "No Help Wanted", "I Believe You Got A Sidekick", "Bicycle Boogie", "Operator", "Slow Down Baby", "Paper Lady", and "Rip & Run" by Bob Gaddy; "You Better Heed My Warning", "Please Tell Me", "Feelin All Right", "No Tellin What I'll Do", and "What Your Love Means To Me" by Larry Dale; "A Letter To Lightnin Hopkins", "Worrying Over You", "Bluebird Bluebird", and "My Confession" by Brownie McGhee – and more by Cousin Leroy, Alonzo Scales, and Paul Williams too. Apple, 1973. Very Good ... $19.99 24.99
One of the most brilliant moments of genius from Paul McCartney & Wings – and a set that has Paul working with the group in perfect album formation – able to craft enough songs that became hit singles, yet also fit the whole thing together in a superb sonic reality that made the whole thing even more wonderful as a full length record! The shift of moods, tones, and sounds are as varied as the choice of celebrities appearing with the group on the cover – and the interplay between Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine has really hit its stride – on titles that include one of our all-time Wings favorites, "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five" – plus "Band On The Run", "Bluebird", "Jet", "Mrs Vanderbilt", "Let Me Roll It", "Mamunia", "No Words", and "Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve and poster! Cover has some surface and edge wear.)

Dizzy Reece & Tubby HayesChanging The Jazz At Buckingham Palace ... CD
Savoy/Sony (Japan), 1956. Used ... $19.99
One of the rarest records on the Savoy label – and a crack session of British jazz featuring two of England's best players ever! The album's got a side of work apiece by Hayes and Reece – and the Hayes cuts are two long jammers with a laidback blowing session feel that works perfectly with his gutsy tenor. Players on those tunes include Harry South on piano and Dickie Hawdon on trumpet – and the titles are "Nicole" and "Hall Hears The Blues". The Reece material features a quartet on four tighter tunes, three of them Charlie Parker compositions ("Yardbird", "Blue Bird", and "Bluebird Number 2"), plus a mellow reading of "How Deep Is The Ocean". Reece's quartet features the great Phil Seamen on drums, and piano work by Terry Shannon, who's no slouch either! CD

✨✧ Frank RosolinoThinking About You (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sackville (Canada), 1976. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the last work ever recorded by trombonist Frank Rosolino – really wonderful laidback live material that has Frank blowing in an open, spacious sort of way! The album's a great chance to hear the creativity and soul of Rosolino's trombone at its best – and has a very different feel than most of his early work – which, while great, always had a tighter west coast approach. The group here is a Canadian one – no surprise, as the material was recorded in Toronto – and features great guitar from Ed Bickert, plus Don Thomson on bass, and Terry Clarke on drums. This 2CD set is overflowing with bonus material – and titles include the group's long, melodic treatment of Monk's "Round Midnight", plus "Sweet And Lovely", "Who Can I Turn To", "I Thought About You", "Laura", "Bluebird", "I Got It Bad", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "There's No You", and "My Old Flame". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsBridge ... CD
RCA, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowing late 50s sessions might not expect the album to work – but instead, it sets up his playing in a whole new mode that brings out a leaner, more confident, more sophisticated solo mode that shows that his time woodshedding in retirement was well spent. Rollins playing is impeccable, with a maturity not heard in his late 50's work, and the whole album is a beautiful study in measured, thoughtful soloing. Tracks include "John S.", "The Bridge", and "God Bless the Child". CD
