One of our favorite-ever albums on Prestige Records from the 60s – and a set that's a fair bit different than most of the other work on the label! The set's an unusual outing for saxophonist George Braith – cut after his famous albums for Blue Note, and in a mode that's quite different – very far-reaching, and almost spiritual at points – with the blend of jazz and other modes that you might find on the Cadet/Concept sessions in late 60s Chicago! Braith plays a wide assortment of saxes – c-melody, alto and soprano – but his playing here is a bit different than the Roland Kirk-like vibe of before – sometimes more stretched-out and exploratory, in a Nathan Davis sort of vibe – sometimes wrapped up in some larger explorations from the whole group. Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at another level, the record's still way darn bolder than just about anything coming out of LA at the time – proof that amidst all the cool jazz ruminations of the 50s, there was a second wave of modernism about to explode! The group here features Don Cherry on trumpet, Walter Norris on piano, Don Payne on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and while the core harmelodic rhythmic approach isn't always in place, it's more than made up for by some surprisingly free energy. One of a handful of documents from the late 50s of an early incarnation of Ornette's group, that still featured piano, before he decided to pursue the more limitless possibilities of a keyless harmelodic group. Paul Bley joins Ornette, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins in this seminal recording, which offers an altogether different perspective on Coleman's formative years developing the free concept. 4 numbers in all: "Klactoveesedstene", "I Remember Harlem", "The Blessing" and "Free". Not a new version of Pierre Dorge's famous group, but a 30th anniversary celebration that shows the guitarist and ensemble to be as creative as ever! As with earlier efforts, the approach here is a very offbeat extrapolation of modern large ensemble modes from the generations of Ellington and Kenton – taken to very weird territory with Dorge's guitar in the lead, and with some very inventive use of familiar horns, plus keyboards and percussion. Tracks are mostly short, and titles include "Xongly", "Sankt Jakob", "Fur Kontrabas", "Balada Para El Trompetista", "Ratatata Lang Ra", and "Blessing Bones". CD

Genius live work from tenor saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar – working here in trio formation with bass and drums, freely creating on the fly – and evoking the power of Sonny Rollins live classics for Blue Note and RCA! We've raved elsewhere on these pages about Kullhammar's tone and musical vision on the tenor – but it steps out even more strongly on this set, thanks to firm support from drummer Daniel Fredriksson and bassist Torbjorn Zetterberg – who both match Jonas' inventive energy on the record. As with Sonny Rollins Vanguard recordings for Blue Note, there's a tremendous depth of spirit and sound here, and one record is not nearly enough to capture the scope of talent – which is why we're happy they've decided to issue 3 albums worth of material from this date! A landmark concert from the mid 80s – one held to honor the resurrection of the Blue Note label, featuring a wealth of some of the best players for the label – from the 80s back to the 50s bebop years. This is the last of 4 albums, issued both separately and in a box set format, and features a nice quintet featuring Stanley Jordan, Charles Lloyd, Michel Petrucciani, Cecil McBee, and Jack DeJohnette. Quite a bit different than the famous Charles Lloyd work of the 60s – but a nicely introspective session that showcases his quieter sounds of later years! The date was recorded in Oslo, with a relatively laidback feel – by a quartet that features Lloyd on tenor, Bobo Stenson on piano, Anders Jorman on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all players who really get some of their own space and time for expression on the record, working with Lloyd more in the sense of a small cadre of co-mingled players, rather than the structure of a traditional combo. A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Tremendous material from bassist Putter Smith – a player you may not recognize, but one who's been making some beautiful music on the LA scene for decades! Putter's got a soulful, soaring vision that makes him a perfect choice for Henry Franklin's Skipper label – and like Franklin's recent gems on that imprint, there's a quality here that takes us right back to the best indie soul jazz of the 70s – richly expressive material from a post-Coltrane era – with a vibe that's somewhere between Clifford Jordan on Strata East, and some of the hipper albums on Muse Records from the decade. Putter plays bass, but really manages to get some great horn help here, too – the alto of Jon Whinnery and tenor of John Gross – beautifully intertwined, and stepping along the modally-influenced rhythms of the set – which are played by Smith on bass, Theo Saunders on piano, and Kendall Kay on drums. The album's got an understated cover, but a wonderfully rich sound – and it's one we've been spinning often at the Dusty Groove offices of late! A very groovy set from guitar genius Gabor Szabo – one that features all those cool tones and elements he'd developed on his late 60s albums for Impulse and Skye Records, given a tighter LA groove here, with almost an A&M Records vibe! There's loads of great solos throughout, played in a combo that also features Lynn Blessing on vibes, Richard Thompson and Nick DeCaro on keyboards, and Sandra Crouch on percussion – all set to some backings handled by DeCaro, who really helps shape the sound of the set! The tunes are a really nice mix of material – and while this might not be Gabor's most way-out album, it's still full of lots of his great groovy guitar – on titles that include "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Country Illusion", "Sombrero Sam", "Lady With Child", "Pretty Girl Why", "Hum A Song", "Magical Connection", and "Fred & Betty". An overlooked gem from saxophonist Salim Washington – a great little album recorded in Boston during the 90s, but filled with the same sense of soulful expression as albums on Strata East from 20 years before! The group's a large one here – with trombone from Frank Lacy, alto from Kurtis Rivers, trumpet from Waldon Ricks, viola from Melanie Dyer, and some especially great piano from Joe Bonner, who also wrote some of the tracks on the set. The work has a focused, flowing feel from the very first note – well-executed large group material that really draws on the best spirits of the ensemble, and hones that energy into some wonderfully evocative tunes! Titles include "Blessing From Oshun", "Love In Exile", "Blossom", "To Know Yahweh", "Chaos In America", and "Whispered Fade". CD

Amazing work from violinist Michael White – one of a few that he cut for the Impulse label in the early 70s, all of which helped to completely redefine the use of his instrument in jazz! Throw away any sleepy connotations you may have about the violin, because in White's hands it's an instrument of soul and spirit – one used to unlock cosmic tones that glide effortlessly next to the session's earthy blend of piano, bass, and percussion! White shapes his sounds beautifully for the session – breaking the violin free of any staid European-bound traditions – and using the instrument as a key part of the new tradition of African American expression explored by Leroy Jenkins, Billy Bang, and others. Side one features the extended "Pneuma" suite – a long, exploratory track that sounds a bit like some of Leroy Jenkins work at the time – and side two tightens things up with some shorter, groovier numbers that often also feature vocals! Our favorite is the anthemic vocal number "Journey Of The Black Star" – a skipping, joyful ode that's really great – and other tunes include soulful tracks "The Blessing Song" and "Ebony Plaza", both of which have that warm post-Shepp Impulse glow to them! An essential look at the spiritual jazz legacy of Impulse Records – a set that's maybe a bit overdue in this series, given that Impulse first opened the door to these modes with their recordings of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in the 60s! For some reason, Impulse had a perfect ear for this music – able to let players stretch out and be free, but also work some of the earlier modal jazz impulses into longer-form tunes that still had a pulse of rhythm – and which were often a bit different than the freer jazz styles on a label like ESP. Make no mistake, there's plenty of improvisation going on here – but it's also part of the larger, unified spirit of the tunes – a real message in the music, on selections that include "Sister Mamie" by Yusef Lateef, "Three Flowers" by McCoy Tyner, "7th Day" by Freddie Hubbard, "Half & Half" by Elvin Jones, "Groove Waltz" by McCoy Tyner, "The Blessing Song" by Michael White, "Turiya & Ramakrishna" by Alice Coltrane, "A Taste Of Honey" by Phil Woods, "Constant Trob (part 1)" by John Klemmer, "Hum Allah Hum Allah Hum Allah" by Pharoah Sanders, "Maimoun" by Marion Brown, "Lonesome Lover" by Max Roach, "Fantszm" by Elvin Jones, "Acknowledgement" by John Coltrane, "Thembi" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Journey In Satchidananda" by Alice Coltrane. Stunning sounds from Michael Orr – a singer you might know from his secular work in the duo of Harris & Orr – and who still sounds incredible here in a more spiritual-styled set from the start of the 80s! As with Michael's earlier music, there's a cool, cosmic vibe going on in the instrumentation – jazzy keyboard inflections and a great spacey soul conception that's quite unusual for most records of this vintage, much less the gospel setting that Orr's working in here on the Birthright label! Yet as with the hippest gospel records of the time, the religion is delivered more in a sense of universal spirit – at a level that's more on par with some of the more spiritual jazz and soul releases of the time – a mode that Orr worked in before on his previous albums. Michael plays a fair bit of Fender Rhodes on the record, and sings deeply too – and the vibe here is a lot like the best modern soul moments from Rance Allen and DJ Rogers. Really beautiful sounds from bassist David Wertman – an unsung hero of the late 70s spiritual jazz scene around New England, and one who delivers this gem in close partnership with singer Lynne Meryl! Meryl's got this warm, fluid style that's a lot like the way that some of the better Bay Area groups were using jazz vocals a few years before – a mode inspired by overseas singers like Flora Purim or Urzula Dudziak, but used here alongside soulful instrumentation that draws a lot from the more inside currents of the loft jazz scene! Wertman's bass is at the core, and tremendous throughout – full of fire and force, and sometimes matched with a bit of percussion – a musical force that's handled here more fully by Tony Vacca, who employs a range of instruments – next to piano and prepared piano from Tom McClung, and these strong trombone solos from Tim Atherton – a player who really sends the whole thing over the top with his contributions! Most tracks have a great modal groove – and titles include "Forest Dance", "Camel", "Flute Song", "New Earth", "Sing My Love Song", and "Dance Of The Mideast Madness". This expanded edition brings in more rare cuts from other releases – eight bonus tracks that include "How Come", "Up In The Sky", "Sci Fi Fantasy", "Blessing Of Love", "Golden Light", and "You Are My Love". Spiritual sounds from Pamela Samiha Wise – a musician who was a bit late to the Tribe Records scene in Detroit, but who's really done a lot to carry on the vision of the music! You might know Wise from some of her recordings with Wendell Harrison, and Harrison is very much in full force here – blowing tenor and bass clarinet, in a lineup that also includes Dwight Adams on trumpet, Terry Kimura on trombone, and plenty of percussion in the mix as well. There's some occasional vocal moments on the record, and the whole thing has that maturing sense of majesty that we love in Harrison's later projects – but served up here in a voice that's definitely that of Pamela – a set that's as timeless as it is soulful, with titles that include "Ode To Dorothy", "The Divine One", "Vein Melter", "How Do We End All This Madness", "The Only Blessing That I Have Is You", "Plena Plenty", and "Love Dream". A heavenly bit of spiritual jazz from this cool Canadian combo – a lean group, but one who manage to deliver this soulful flow that almost makes you think they're a much larger ensemble! Pierre Chretien handles the Fender Rhodes and songwriting, and he's really got a magical ear for a tune – letting things build up, find their groove, then really take off – with work from a quintet that features Ed Lister on trumpet, Zakari Frantz on alto, Chris Pond on bass, and Mike Essoudry on drums – a group who seem to almost evoke some of those magical, soulful 70s sessions that were produced by CBC, and issued in very unassuming covers – the kind of collector's treasures we love to stumble upon when digging north of the border! Mindblowing work from a tenorist we only just discovered with this amazing debut album – a deeply spiritual player who comes off beautifully on this set of original compositions! Nat Birchall blows with a range of feeling that takes us back to the 70s best of Pharoah Sanders, Billy Harper, and Clifford Jordan – and he puts his tunes together with a similar feel too – letting them build organically, often with the group just finding the rhythm at the start – then hitting a groove that lets Birchall's horn blossom wonderfully in sound – reaching forth with rich tones that are simply wonderful – over piano, bass, drums – and some guest trumpet by Matthew Halsall on one track (by the way, check out Halsall's album on the same label – it's another gem!) Jazz singers always seem to do an especially great job with Christmas records – so it's no surprise that Diana Krall really shines here in a special setting of Holiday tunes! The album features some tracks that are nice and mellow – very small combo tunes that get at the moodier side of the season – mixed with more upbeat, swinging tracks that have Diana backed by the Clayton Hamilton Orchestra – who bring a nicely full spirit to the sound to balance out the mood. A full length collabo from Nas & Damien "Jr Gong" Marley – who've worked together in the past on a track two – and overall it's a win that goes well beyond simple hip hop/dancehall fusion! The duo samples Mulatu, collaborate with K'Naan , Dennis Brown, Stephen Marley and others, and bring global dramatic sweep and and timeless funk to Distant Relatives that ends up working better as an eclectic whole than you may have suspected! The pair may be best known from this era for their mega hit "Solid" – but Nick and Valerie changed the face of duet soul forever long before that sweet, if ubiqitous number– the boy/girl soul sound into a strident, mature, tightly-grooving mode! This set splits the difference between uptempo, sophisticated soul and a more delicate, ballad mode. Very joyous sounds from Konkolo Orchestra – an Afro Funk group, but one with a really uplifting vibe – a really special approach to the music that definitely sets them apart from the rest! Part of the music's charm lies in the vocals – often sung by lead singer Nongoma Ndlovu, a vocalist with a quality that's instantly endearing, and often echoed by other members of the group in a very joyous way! Vocals are by a few others at points, and the album also has a few instrumentals – with a small tight mix of one sax and one trumpet, keyboards, bass, drums, and some great percussion as well.
