EdanBeauty & The Beat ... CD
Lewis, 2005. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Edan returns with a new set of his sample heavy wizardry – this time out steeped heavily in late 60s pysch out flourishes, yet still sporting the thickest breakbeats available. His rhyme style is both ridiculous and genius – with tongue twists that pay homage and blast forward simultaneously. Guests include Mr Lif, Insight, and Percee-P. Tracks include "Funky Voltron", "I See Colours", "Torture Chamber", "Promised Land", "Time Outt", "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme", "Making Planets", "Murder Mystery", "Rock And Roll", and "Smile". Peggy Lee & George ShearingBeauty & The Beat (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1959. Used ... $4.99
A very nice small combo album from Peggy Lee – singing here with live backings by the George Shearing Quintet, in a style that's very different from a lot of her other work for Capitol! The set's got a slight Latin feel, thanks to George's mix of percussion, vibes, piano, and guitar – and Peggy's never sounded better, stepping out strongly on tunes that include "Do I Love You", "Get Out Of Town", "There'll Be Another Spring", and "Mambo In Miami". Features 2 bonus tracks. CD
(Out of print, small cutout notch through spine.)

Babatunde OlatunjiDance To The Beat Of My Drum ... LP
Roulette, 1986. Near Mint- ... $9.99
It's the mid 80s and Mickey Hart's behind the production on this album, so you know it has a slick, glossy touch all over it, with a very "world music" approach. But the beauty of Olatunji's playing and subtle complexity of the rhythms trump the flashy approach. The lineup is huge, with guest spots by Santana and Airto. 5 numbers in all, including "The Beat Of My Drum", "Loyin Loyin", "Ife L'Oju L'Aiye", "Akiwowo" and "Se Eni A Fe L'Amo – Kere Kere". Manu DibangoAfricadelic ... LP
Survival Research (Australia), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... About March 19, 2021
Incredibly funky work from Manu Dibango – a set that's easily as great as his classic Soul Makossa album – but which is a lot more obscure overall! The work's got a fiercely-jamming quality all the way through – lots of rumbling percussion at the bottom, and also a bit of keyboards as well – served up in a heady brew that turns out to be a perfect setting for Dibango's sharp-edged reeds! The record's got a few especially great break tracks, but all numbers are pretty darn great too – filled with more funky changes, flaring horns, and 70s-styled grooves than you might ever hope to find in a single album! Tracks include "Black Beauty", "Soul Fiesta", "The Panther", "Africadelic", "Moving Waves", "Afro Soul", "Wa Wa", "Percussion Storm", "Monkey Beat", and "Oriental Sunset". LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

✨✧ Young Lions (Lee Morgan & Wayne Shorter)Young Lions ... LP
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our top ten jazz albums of all time! Honest! This stunning session from 1960 not only coined the term "young lions" in jazz, but offers up a pack of them that any modern players would be hard-pressed to beat. Trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenorist Wayne Shorter, and pianist Bobby Timmons take a break from the Jazz Messengers to join altoist Frank Strozier in the frontline on this fantastic set of tracks that ring with a lyrical beauty hardly surpassed by any other hardbop album. Shorter wrote nearly all of the tracks, and the set list includes some of his best-ever work, like "Seeds Of Sin", "Scourin'", and "Peaches & Cream" – all beautiful tracks that are completely sublime. The group's completed by Bob Cranshaw on bass and Albert Heath on drums – and other titles include "Fat Lady", and "That's Right". If you buy one jazz album this year, let it be this one! LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some light wear in a bottom corner, but is nice overall. Vinyl is nice and clean.)

✨✧ Stan GetzBossas & Ballads – The Lost Sessions ... CD
Verve, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lost late session by Stan Getz – and one of his greatest recordings of the 80s! The album's got the simple elegance of some of his best Verve work – with a group that features Stan on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The combination of Barron and Getz is magical – with a laidback soulfulness that takes us back to the days of Sweet Rain, Voices, and some of our favorite Getz sessions from the 60s. Tracks are all quite long – most well over 7 minutes – with a simple, unfettered approach that offers Stan in all his lyrical beauty. Recorded in 1989 – but oddly never issued until now – and a real treasure all the way through! Titles include "Beatrice", "Spiral", "Sunshow", "Joanne Julia", "Soul Eyes", and "El Sueno". CD

✨✧ Isaac HayesDouble Feature (Truck Turner/Tough Guys) ... CD
Stax, 1974. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 massive Isaac Hayes soundtracks in one set – both from the magical cinematic year of 1974! Truck Turner is a hard and heavy soundtrack that we like even more than his classic work on Shaft! Unlike Shaft, Ike actually starred in the film Truck Turner – which may be one reason why he brought his full game to the table for the record – and scored a batch of badass tunes that still stand with some of the best funky soundtrack work of the 70s! The rhythm's especially hard on the best cuts – really crackling with a lot of intensity, and a stark, hard funky sound that's made the record a favorite of beatheads for years! Ike kicks it hard on cuts like "Pursuit Of The Pimpmobile", "House Full Of Girls", "Drinking", "Give It To Me", "Now We're One", "Breakthrough", "House of Beauty", and the massive title cut "Truck Turner". Tough Guys is deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination – showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! The album sports 2 really classic tunes – the title theme "Tough Guys", and the classic "Hung Up On My Baby" – both of which have a solidly funky feel that will more than please the usual soundtrack beathead crowd. But overall, the other tunes twist and turn in a delightful mix of modes – expanding on the soulful territory Ike first explored in his original soundtracks, and offering up a great range of moods and emotion. The album's got some especially great chromatic guitar work – and other titles include "Joe Bell", "Randolph & Dearborn", "Buns O Plenty", "Run Fay Run", and "Red Rooster". CD

✨✧ VariousFunky Coup Vol 1 – Korean Soul, Funk, & Rare Groove Nuggets 1973 to 1980 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beatball (Korea), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very rare tracks from the Korean scene of the 70s – a huge amount of work we've never heard before, and which shows that the southern half of the peninsula was turning out some very groovy tunes! Some tracks are all-out funk, others have a more disco-based approach – and throughout, there's a slightly off-kilter vibe – a bit like some of the collections of Southeast Asian material of this nature that we've heard – with less of the tight production and arrangements that Japanese soul was using at the time. Lyrics are all in Korean, as are most of the song titles – and the double-length set is overflowing with fresh musical discoveries by artists who include Choi Heon, Kim Trio, Ryu Bok-Sung & His Bongo Orchestra, Yoon Si-Nae, Kim Sung-Ae, Devils, Beauty Girls, Jungmin & Cheonggaeguri, Okhee, and Mujigae Quintet. Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty". Emitt RhodesEmitt Rhodes ... CD
Dunhill/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... About April 28, 2021
A really great self-titled set from Emitt Rhodes – a compelling California singer who hardly ever gets his due! The music's a wonderful mix of California late 60s singer/songwriter modes and bits of Beatles-esque production – a blend that makes for a fuller feel than usual for a record like this – a bit more confidence, and some really great punch in the overall sound, but never in a way that's slick or commercial. Emitt handled all instruments and arrangements himself – and Curt Boettcher helped a bit on the mix down, so we're happy to credit him for part of the "punch". Titles include "With My Face On The Floor", "She's Such A Beauty", "Promises I've Made", "Long Time No See", and "You Take The Dark Out Of The Night". CD
