VariousSound Of The City Vol 3 – Berlin (Compiled By Jazzanova) ... CD
Motor (Germany), 1999. Used ... $3.99
The sound of modern Berlin – expertly selected by Jazzanova, one of the most important musical forces to come out of Germany in the past 10 years! The tracks are mostly modern, very much in the Compost Records vein, and mixed with some occasional older numbers that show that Jazzanova still have one ear in the past – which has always helped to shape their vision of the future! Titles include "Northern Lights" by Roland Kovac, "Zanzibar" by Edu Lobo, "Sternschanze" by Beat Boutique, "New Day" by Round 2, "Planetaria (Hefner rmx)" by 4 Hero, "Love Song" by Lani Hall, "Propulsion" by Extended Spirit, "Never" by Atomhockey, "Beauty" by One Soul, and "Otomo" by Tarwater. ✨✧ Ornette ColemanThis Is Our Music ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A landmark in modern jazz – from the stark stares of the band on the cover, to the starkly haunting music in the grooves! The record makes a bold statement right from the outset – and more than lives up to its promise in the sound within – an amazing approach to modern jazz that's still quite powerful, even all these many years later! The group features Ornette Coleman on alto, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – moving at a fast, highly rhythmic pace that still leaves us breathless – filled with angles, but wrapped up in soul. The group make severe statements about the future of modern music in tracks like "Humpty Dumpty", "Beauty Is a Rare Thing", and "Kaleidoscope" – bouncing the efforts of the whole group off the beat, in a way that's both challenging and groove-heavy at the same time, a key summation of the genius of Ornette's early vision! LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Rockefeller label pressing. Cover has light aging along the opening, in fantastic shape otherwise!)

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

✨✧ AldorandeAldorande ... CD
Favorite (France), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A jazz funk killer from Aldorande – a French quartet that features some mighty nice keyboards from Florian Pellissier, who we also really love on his own recordings too! The style here is different than those, though – very tight rhythms with a slightly cosmic core – almost jazz funk taking things back from the broken beat generation, finding a way to move with energy learned from that scene, but in a style that's more cohesively funky – classic and contemporary at the same time! The group get a bit of help from added horns at points, and there's also a bit of vocals on the set too – but the main energy comes from the fantastic mix of keyboards and rhythms at the core. Titles include "Praia Do Destino", "Rayon Vert", "Because Of You", "La Fin Est Un Commencement", "Beauty Island", and "Sous La Lune". CD

Sa-Ra Creative PartnersNuclear Evolution – The Age Of Love (plus bonus disc) ... CD
Ubiquity, 2009. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
Cosmic hip hop soul from Om'Mas Keith, Shafiq Husayn & Taz Arnold – a long awaited proper full length from the Sa-Ra Creative Partners – and an excellent one! Sa-Ra's signature spacey funk & beatcraft, hypnotic and boundless grooves have been critical behind the scenes for some of their superstar friends, most famously Kanye West and Erykah Badu, but Sa-Ra's own records haven't gotten them to mainstream hugeness. The mainstream's loss is the indie scene's gain, though, as this set for Ubiquity as all we hoped it would be and more. The beats and bass are insistent, headnodding hip hop funk, with spacier textures galore, and the tunes range from an astral hip hop soul to jazzy funk, and the roster of guests is as deep as Sa-Ra's music – from Erykah Badu, to other female vocalists such as Debi Nova, Noni Limar & Rozzi Dame bringing the sweeter vibes, plus legendary jazz sax great Gary Bartz and his quartet! Tracks include "Spacefruit" with Debbie Nova, "Dirty Beauty" with Erykah Badu, "Traffika", "Bitch Baby", "Love Czars", "Gemini's Rising" with Rozzi Dame, "Love Today", "Can I Get U Hi?", "Cosmic Ball" with the Gary Bartz Quartet and more. CD version includes a bonus disc with 6 more tracks: "Spaceways Theme", "Just Like A Baby", "Double Dutch (Co Co Pops)" feat Aazable, "Death Of A Star (Supernova)", "Powder Bump" and "Hangin By A String". CD
(Still sealed with slipcase.)

✨✧ VariousFunky Coup Vol 1 – Korean Soul, Funk, & Rare Groove Nuggets 1973 to 1980 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beatball (Korea), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very rare tracks from the Korean scene of the 70s – a huge amount of work we've never heard before, and which shows that the southern half of the peninsula was turning out some very groovy tunes! Some tracks are all-out funk, others have a more disco-based approach – and throughout, there's a slightly off-kilter vibe – a bit like some of the collections of Southeast Asian material of this nature that we've heard – with less of the tight production and arrangements that Japanese soul was using at the time. Lyrics are all in Korean, as are most of the song titles – and the double-length set is overflowing with fresh musical discoveries by artists who include Choi Heon, Kim Trio, Ryu Bok-Sung & His Bongo Orchestra, Yoon Si-Nae, Kim Sung-Ae, Devils, Beauty Girls, Jungmin & Cheonggaeguri, Okhee, and Mujigae Quintet. LP, Vinyl record album
(Note: Cover corner is slightly bumped, and top seam has some very light wear from shipping – but the cover is fine otherwise.)

Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty".
