✨✧ Beau BrummelsBradley's Barn ... CD
Collectors Choice/Reprise, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Tremendous stuff – and titles include "Jessica", "Bless You California", "I'm A Sleeper", "Little Bird", "Turn Around", and "An Added Attraction". CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ Beau BrummelsTriangle ... CD
Collectors Choice/Reprise, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! At some level, the group's a folk-rock outfit – with the left-of-center feel of some of Fred Neil's best work for Capitol, and a similar blend of east coast honesty and west coast mind expansion. The format here is remarkably simple, but handled with some nice touches by producer Lenny Waronker, who really brings a lot more out of the band than on their earlier indie recordings. Titles include "Are You Happy", "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", "The Keeper Of Time", "Only Dreaming Now", "Magic Hollow", "Painter Of Women", and "Triangle". CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ Beau BrummelsTurn Around – The Complete Recordings 1964 to 1970 (8CD set) ... CD
Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s. Used 8 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning collection of work from one of our favorite bands of the 60s – a group who sprung up on the San Francisco scene of the mid 60s, then evolved with an amazing sound in just a few short years! The set begins with the group's three albums for the Autumn label – Introducing, Volume Two, and Beau Brummels 66 – and packs those with 47 related demo tracks, outtakes, and alternates – giving a really amazing picture of the group at the start! Then, the package moves into their two tremendous albums for Warner Brothers – Triangle and Bradley's Barn, both of which are real highlights on the late 60s creative landscape of the label – presented here with 32 associated demo tracks and rarities from those sessions! Then, the set moves into a 1965 demo session for Autumn Records, with over two dozen songs in development form in the studio. CD7 features solo work from Ron Elliott and Sal Valentino of the group – including some unheard material! CD8 features 28 more tracks – all single cuts from the group, including cancelled releases, and some solo singles from Sal Valentino. 228 tracks in all – all newly mastered, with many titles on CD for the first time ever! ✨✧ Beau BrummelsBest Of The Beau Brummels – Featuring Laugh Laugh ... LP
Vault, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An unusual collection of early work by The Beau Brummels – pre-Warner material recorded for Autumn, but on a record issued by the Vault label! There's a great sense of jangle-pop throughout – a slight twang that would later unfold in different ways in Bradley's Barn, but which here works to give the tunes this little sense of sadness amidst the warmer melodies – which themselves are particularly great, and much better-crafted than some of the other US groups of this nature at the time. The boys definitely borrow a bit from The Beatles (including a name that gave them placement right next to the fab four in the record racks) – but maybe they're also drawing on some of the folk harmony groups from the SF scene they called home, too. ✨✧ Ron ElliottCandlestickmaker ... LP
Warner, 1970. Near Mint- ... $99.99
Post Beau Brummels work by Ron Elliott – and a set that really echoes the group's best moments on Bradley's Barn and some of the later albums! The style here is slightly rootsy, as in the later years of the BB's – a blend of country influences and California hip – often played with small group instrumentation, but carried off with a chromatic sophistication that's really unique – a bit like the work of Tom Rapp, but not nearly as tortured. Elliott's vocals are great – sometimes gruff, but certainly with a great degree of humanity – and titles include the two-part, side-long "Candlestickmaker Suite", plus "Lazy Day", "All Time Green", "Deep River Runs Blue", and "To The City To The Sea". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green W7 label stereo pressing. Includes the Warner inner sleeve and insert! Cover has minimal ringwear, some edge wear, and a half split top seam.)

Happy EndKazemachi Roman ... LP
Pony Canyon (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 48.99
A seminal bit of Japanese rock from the early 70s – performed by a group that included Haruomi Hosono, and who has a style that borrows from the best of the LA scene of the late 60s! The tunes are extremely catchy – done in a folksy style that has compressed guitars and spacious production that evoke bits of The Byrds, Graham Parsons, Beau Brummels, late Association, and some of our other favorite work from those magical years. Lyrics are all in Japanese, but sung in a simple and compelling style that somehow makes you forget that fact! LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy gatefold pressing, with obi!)

Mojo MenThere Goes My Mind ... CD
Sundazed, Late 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A long-overdue full length album from The Mojo Men – one that's comprised of rare singles and early demo cuts by the group – a killer act on the San Francisco scene who followed the same Beau Brummels path from Autumn Records to Warner Brothers! The music definitely echoes some of that legacy, but also has a vibe that's very much its own – psychedelic garage at times, and delivered in a way that's nicely lean, and unadorned by the kind of larger production that another label might have used to either muddle or ruin their sound. The lean brilliance is right up there with some heady Cali favorites that were issued by Warner and Reprise at the time – and had the label had the smarts, this record would have been another classic catalog release from those glory days! Titles include "Watch You Walk Away", "Sure Of Your Love", "When You're Down", "I Wish Today Was Yesterday", "Take Me Away", "Unaware Of Me", "Candy", and "It's Okay". CD

✨✧ VariousNuggets – Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era – Vol 2 ... CD
Rhino, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those few classic cases where a compilation of tracks was maybe even more influential than the original music itself – as this early 70s collection of 60s material turned out to shape and influence generations for decades to come! Guitar genius Lenny Kaye put the set together famously for Elektra Records in 1972 – as a reminder that, just a few years before, there were some amazing sounds that were not only brewing up in local indie scenes around the country, but also on the radio as well – even though most of those groups had been pushed into relative obscurity by the rise of soft rock, hard rock, and classic rock of the early 70s! The package is a return to the pre-prog years, with an especially strong ear for garage-tuned tracks that would go on to shape later punk, 80s indie, and lots more underground sounds in the future. Volume 2 includes tracks by Kim Fowley, the Elastik Band, Chocolate Watch Band, Kenny and the Kasuals, Human Beinz, Del-Vetts, Squires, Night Crawlers, and the Beau Brummels – 31 tracks total. CD
(Disc 2 from the larger box set.)

✨✧ Everly BrothersRoots ... LP
Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label stereo W7 pressing. Cover looks nice, with minimal wear.)

✨✧ VariousListen To The Voices – Sly Stone In The Studio 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing look at the early years of Sly Stone – a hip array of rare projects Sly recorded with other artists, plus a few pre-Columbia gems of his own! The package is beautifully put together, and the vibe here is definitely a great precursor to the famous sound of Sly with the Family Stone in the late 60s – a perfect illustration of his early ear for funky rhythms and some of the most righteous soul of his generation! And oddly, even artists who usually sound far from Stone come out definitely sounding a bit Sly-like here – and the package features the usual Ace great notes, to help you understand where all this great music's coming from. Titles include "Danse A La Musique" by The French Fries, "I'm Going Home (part 1)" and "Home Sweet Home (part 2)" by Joe Hicks, "You're The One (parts 1 & 2)" by Little Sister, "Life & Death In G & A" by Abaco Dream, "I'm Just Like You" by 61X, "Underdog" by The Beau Brummels, "Can't She Tell" by Billy Preston, "LSD" by Freddie & The Stone Souls, "Stanga" by Little Sister, "I Remember" by Sly & Billy Preston, "Superfunk" by Freddie & The Stone Souls, and the cuts "For Real (demo)", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Life Of Fortune & Fame", "You Really Got Me (demo)", and "I Ain't Got Nobody" by Sly Stone himself! ✨✧ PanPan ... CD
CBS/Cobalt Hour (Korea), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet and mellow work from ex-Beau Brummel Ron Elliott – done in a style that's a bit jazzy, a bit folksy, and with some really nice moments! There's a feel here that steps off the Bradley's Barn album by the Brummels, but it's actually inflected with a hippy honesty that makes for an even more innocent feel – kind of jaded LA hipster goes to the country and soaks up the sunshine, if you know what we mean! Keith Barbour sings lead vocals, but Ron and Val Christian Garay often harmonize alongside – in a way that echoes some of the best early touches of America, too – but with a hipper feel. Jimmie Haskell handles the arrangements, and plays a bit of moog – and titles include "Lady Honey", "The Puppet", "Garbage Man", "Ain't Got The Strings", "More Than My Guitar", and "Sad Rag Doll". ✨✧ VariousCosmic Country ... CD
Warner (Australia), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Not the kind of country music you'd hear from the mainstream of Nashville, and instead a really cool collection of underground work from a variety of US scenes at the end of the 60s – most with the kind of trippy currents you'd expect from the "cosmic" in the title! Lots of the work here shows the breaking influence of country on the LA scene, but other tracks also show the trippier influences of that scene on the south as well – especially the spots where longer hair and headier attitudes were not only tolerated, but encouraged in the process of making music! The set's a really unique approach to this period, and draws together so many different strands we wouldn't have thought of – creating a rich tapestry of sounds that includes "Sam Stone" by John Prine, "Catch The Wind" by Vern Gosdin, "Close The Door Lightly" by The Dillards, "Dance Dance Dance" by Crazy Horse, "Deep Water" by Beau Brummels, "Cowboy Movie" by David Crosby, "I Wonder If I Care As Much" by The Everly Brothers, "Truck Stop Girl" by Little Feat, "From A Silver Phial" by Gene Clark, "Some Of Shelly's Blues" by The Monkees, "Wallflower" by Doug Sahm, "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" by Delaney & Bonnie, "$1000 Wedding" by Gram Parsons, "Jesus In 3/4 Time" by John David Souther, and "Pretend I Never Happened" by Willie Nelson. 2CD set features 38 tracks in all!
