✨✧ VariousGreasy Mike At The Beatnik Cafe ... LP
Jazzman (UK), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... $22.99 28.99
Greasy Mike takes on postwar hipness this time around – on a whole set of tracks that either parody beatnik culture, or embrace it fully – served up in a weird and wonderful blend of tunes in jazz, rock, Latin, and other hip styles from the late 50s and early 60s! The set follows the same vibe as some of Mike's other collections – and pulls together overlooked and offbeat tracks from both rare 45s and lost LPs – a mighty cool set list that includes "Gee Dad It's Early" by Guitars Inc, "New York Havana" by The Seven Arts Beat Society, "Last Night" by Ronnie Mann, "Africa Laments" by The Afro Americans, "Monday Night At 8pm" by Harvey Anderson, "Listen To Me Baby" by Ralph Ventura, "House Of Lords" by Isidro Misquez, "The Wiggler" by Leo Wright, "Cut A Loose" by Big Jox Orchestra, and "Moccasin Rock" by Abie Baker. ✨✧ Sabrina MalheirosTerra De Ninguem (Nicola Conte rework)/Cade Voce (Max Cole & Beatnik rmx)/Equilibria (album) ... 12-inch
Far Out (UK), 2006. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Nicola Conte, we love you – and if we ever needed a reason why, this single sure is proof! Sabrina's one of the better modern bossa divas around – really classic in approach, but with a great energy for the dancefloor – and here, she gets a Schema-styled taken courtesy of Conte – who kicks in a snare-heavy groove that really snaps the tune along wonderfully – jazzing up Sabrina's take of the famous "Terra De Ninguem", and almost making the whole thing come off like an Elis Regina classic from the 60s! A real bossa dancefloor gem – and one of our favorite singles on Far Out to date! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Marty GoldSkin Tight ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Pretty skin tight stuff – as Marty and crew play more bongos than you'd ever hear in a beatnik hoedown! The set's a very percussive one, and is one of Gold's better outings on RCA – thanks to the tightly stretched skins of the bongo. Gold arranged all tunes, and some of them are bongo-based updates of work he did earlier. Titles include "Allah's Holiday", "Caravan", "Song Of India", and "Hidustan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Living Stereo pressing with deep groove – 1S/3S. Cover has light wear.)

Kenneth PatchenKenneth Patchen Reads With Jazz In Canada ... CD
Folkways, 1958. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Kenneth Patchen, like Kenneth Rexroth, was one of the few poets who really understood what it meant to read and write in a jazz idiom – as you'll hear on this excellent set of beatnik jazz tracks! The album features Patchen reading in a great style – angular, cynical, really working the words of his poems perfectly over backings by the Alan Neil Quartet. The poems are set to music written by George Wallington, Charlie Parker, and others – and tracks include "There's A Place", "They Won't Let You In There", "Do I Not Deal With Angels", "Not Many Kingdoms Left", "The Lonesome Boy Blues", "As I Opened The Window", and "A Sight Is Little Altered". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ VariousGreasy Mike Gets The Giggles – 14 Frantic Flippers Fraught With Frivolous Fun-Filled Frolics ... LP
Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99 25.99
Weird and wild novelty numbers from the glory days of the 7" single – tunes that are mostly rockers, but which also show all the cool and unusual ways that folks were experimenting with new styles and studio modes, then putting the results on a two to three minute 45rpm chunk of vinyl – getting the gags and goofs out there in the years before social media and the internet! There's a wonderfully offbeat selection of cuts here – comedic intentions mixed with inventive instrumentation, odd arrangements, and hip production – on tracks that include "Ho Ho Rock & Roll" by Sid Ramin, "You Tickle Me Baby" by The Royal Jokers, "Your Wiggle & Your Giggle" by Lue Renny, "Breakin Up" by The Fabulous Continentals, "Hey Lulu" by Hank Marvin, "The Mad Scientist" by The Zanies, "Good For A Laugh" by The Paollos, "Lafin Gas" by Adolphus Bell & The All Starts, "The Giggler" by Pat & The Wildcats, "Scrub" by Jim Doval & The Gauchos, and "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman. ✨✧ Lord BuckleyMost Immaculately Hip Aristocrat ... CD
Straight/Rhino, 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the strongest recordings ever made of the mad mad Lord Buckley! The album was issued in the late 60s for Frank Zappa's Straight label – but it features material recorded more than a decade before – at a time when Buckley was still alive, and one of the most bad-rapping comedian's to ever hit a stage. The approach is somewhat freer than some of Buckley's earlier sides – allowing the ersatz comedian a chance to really riff on a variety of subjects – talking with almost a jazz improvisational energy, in the way that made him a big favorite for the beat generation. The overall nature of the record is kind of hard to pin down – as it's not really comedy, just more of a freewheeling spoken session that's a bit jive, a bit beatnik, and plenty darn crazy! Titles include "The Raven", "The King Of Bad Cats", "Governor Slugwell", and "The Hip Einie". CD

✨✧ Mose AllisonMose Alive ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Mose's mid 60s albums for Atlantic – recorded live, with a bit more of a hip flair than some of his earlier work for Prestige and Columbia, but still with those great vocals that went onto influence a generation of beatnik jazz singers. Mose has more than a bit of New Orleans in his tone – but he's also got some northern distance from his material, bringing a nice bit of wit into the recordings. There's a total of 11 tracks including "Parchman Farm", "Smashed", "Seventh Son", "Fool's Paradise", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "The Chaser". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue & green label pressing.)

✨✧ John Barry/Adam FaithBeat Girl (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/El (UK), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of John Barry's first true moments of genius – recorded back when he was the leader of a fab little instrumental combo called the John Barry 7, and was tagged to do some soundtrack work that would forever change the rest of his career! The album's got some incredible instrumental tunes that mix electric guitar and beatnik jazz in a mode that's keeping with the juvenile delinquent theme of the film – with some strings sneaking in to cheese things up a bit, but in a great way that only makes the tunes sound even better! Adam Faith sings vocals on "The Beat Girl Song", "Made You", and "I Did What You Told Me" – and other tunes include "Blues For Beatnicks", "Blondie's Strip", "Beat Girl", "Time Out", "The Sharks", and "The City 2000 AD". This El UK edition includes bonus tracks by Gillian Hills, The John Barry Sound and Adam Faith. CD

✨✧ George DuningBell Book & Candle/1001 Arabian Nights ... CD
Colpix/Film Score Monthly, 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 George Duning soundtracks – back to back on one CD! Bell Book & Candle is a wonderful jazzy soundtrack from the end of the 50s – written for an ultra-cool film that starred Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart in a comedy about beatnik witches in New York! Much of the soundtrack has a cool beat jazz sort of feel to it – and many tracks feature strong solo work by Pete and Conte Candoli, who also perform a bit in nightclub scenes in the film. Other tracks have a slightly more orchestral feel, but one that's still quite light, given the nice themes in the movie – and which also features some playful bits that still keep things jazzy. Titles include "Way Out Calypso", "Send Me Nicky", "Pyewacket Returns", "Zodiac Blues", "L'Assassin Ennuye", and "Shep Shook". 1001 Arabian Nights is pretty darn groovy too – not your usual version of the tales, as the film was an animated effort starring Jim Backus' Mr Magoo character! Duning's music has some of the dramatic and exotic touches you'd expect for an Arabian Nights film – but it's also got a lot more playful ones too, in keeping with the cartoony presentation. Backus sings "Magoo's Blues", The Clark Sisters sing "Three Little Maids From Damascus", and other titles include "Unhappy Magoo", "Bar Fly Magoo", "Dream Ballet", "Crazy Carpet", and "Wedding Celebration". ✨✧ David AmramNo More Walls (Flying Fish) ... CD
Flying Fish/Rounder, 1971/1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set that focuses on the many different styles of arranger/conductor/horn player David Amram. The best material mixes up "Near Eastern" instrumentation and funkier arrangements, and some other cuts that have kind of a groovy beatnik jazz sound to them. Most notable of these is a version of "Pull My Daisy", but other cool tracks include "Tompkins Square Park Consciousness Expander", "Brazilian Memories", "Sao Paulo", and "Going North". This version of the album features 7 tracks in total, with the remaining titles being "Waltz From After The Fall" and "Wind From The Indies". CD

✨✧ Googie Rene ComboWham Bam! – The Best Of The Googie Rene Combo ... CD
Class/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rough and funky piano from Googie Rene – one of the hippest cats on the LA scene of the 50s and 60s! Googie first got his start laying down boogie-styled R&B numbers, but as the 60s moved in, Googie moved onto a whole new batch of grooves – picking up bits of beatnik jazz, soundtrack themes, and even early funky combo grooving! This excellent set's one of the first to look at Googie's genius – and pulls together a host of hard-hitting piano based numbers – originally recorded for the tiny Class and Rendezvous labels, and spanning the decade from 1956 to 1966. 26 tracks in all, with titles that give you a great idea of the grooves – "Wiggle Tail (parts 1 & 2)", "Skumbo", "Bossa Baby", "Flapjacks (parts 1 & 2)", "Sunrise", "The Slide (parts 1 & 2)", "Smokey Joe's La La", "Chica Boo", "Mercy Mercy", and "Soul Zone". Dr Buzzard's Savannah BandCalling All Beatniks ... LP
Passport, 1984. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Post-August Darnell work by Dr Buzzard's Savannah Band – no longer using the "original" in their name! There's still a retro-styled feel here overall – with some of the swing-esque modes of earlier albums, but also a bit of rockabilly as well – an element that kind of diminishes the soul component of the record. Cory Daye is on vocals on most tracks, and titles include "Lucky Day", "Forever", "Do That Girl", "Missing On Highway 33", and "Bass Bottle Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
