Charles Fox/BarryManilow —
Foul Play ... LP Arista, 1978. Very Good+ ...
$3.99
A movie that's so familiar, we sometimes forget the greatness of its soundtrack! True, the film did give the world a few big hits from BarryManilow, but the instrumental score by Charles Fox is mighty nice – a great blend of 70s cop/crime modes with a few tenser moments – orchestrated wonderfully with this approach that's still very classic in its instrumentation, while sparkling with just a few slight contemporary elements. And away from the performances on the screen, the music almost sounds even classier – elevated past PG comedy realm, into the range of classic film score! LP, Vinyl record album

David Fostex —
Dark Yacht ... LP Legere (France), 2023. New Copy ...
$23.9928.99
Sweet smooth funk from David Fostex – a set that's heavy both on 80s boogie modes, and some of the "yacht soul" elements referenced by the title – but which also has a very unique spin of its own! The lineup here is large, although given the names of some of the musicians, that might also be an in-joke – as we're not sure that Herbie Handjob actually played Rhodes on the set – yet despite any question about the origins of the sound, the result is nice and tight – a great contemporary take on classic modes, with a few wisecracks mixed in alongside the soulful vocals. Titles include "Lost My Keys", "Butt Dial", "Glasses For The Masses", "Should Have Washed My Hands", "Livin The Stream", and "What's That Smell BarryManilow". LP, Vinyl record album
A surprisingly nice album from the later years of Dionne Warwick's career – a set recorded at a time when the lady may have been a bit of a parody of herself on screen, but could still sound great in the studio! The approach is an extension of Warwick's Bacharach roots into a adult contemporary soul modes – a style that Burt himself was exploring at the time! Tunes are mostly midtempo or mellower, but Dionne's still got the right amount of poise and class to pull things off nicely – and the album also features duets with Stevie Wonder and Glenn Jones, plus BarryManilow, who also produced. Titles include "Finder Of Lost Loves", "No One In The World", "It's Love", "Bedroom Eyes", "You Made Me Want To Love Again", "It's You", "Run To Me", and "Weakness". LP, Vinyl record album
