✨✧ Baden Powell27 Horas De Estudio ... LP
Elenco (Brazil), 1969. Very Good+ ... $34.99
Wonderfully spare work from the great Baden Powell – recorded in a warm intimate setting, with just guitar and voice carrying the entire record! The tracks are more sophisticated than his earlier bossa work – and the guitar playing is extremely emotional and a testament to Powell's virtuosity. Tracks include "Um Abraco No Codo", "Imanja", "Lotus", "Violao", "Viagem", and "Double". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has surface wear, light edge wear.)

Baden PowellEnciclopedia Musical Brasileira ... CD
WEA (Brazil), 1979/1980. Used ... $4.99
This is hardly the encyclopedic set you'd expect it to be from the title – but it is a great set of tracks that Baden recorded for Warner/Atlantic at the end of the 70s, with a beautifully rootsy feel that makes the material some of his best of that decade! Forget the date of the material, because the overall feel is similar to some of Baden's best (and most sophisticated) work of the late 60s. His guitar playing is wonderfully complex, but even better is his singing – which by this point has matured to a fantastically dark style that perfectly matches his playing and songwriting. Titles include "Refem Da Solidao", "Valsa Numero Um", "Odeon", "Feinha Pro Poeta", "A Lenda Do Abaete", "Berimbau", "Canto De Ossanha", and "Naquele Tempo". Also features "Gente Humilde", recorded in 1994 with Louis Marcel. This set is similar to the older Musica collection – but it features 6 songs that weren't on that one, and vice versa. CD

Baden PowellGirl From Ipanema – Live In Liege ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1987. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Wonderful later work from Brazilian guitar legend Baden Powell – an artist whose sound just deepened and got more complex as the years went on! Here, Baden's just playing solo, but with a vibrancy that's amazing – fingers moving across the strings of the guitar in this amazing way, spinning out rhythm and melody at once – and often topped with some vocals by Powell himself – a light-voiced singer with a sound that adds this special sort of personal sparkle to the music! There's plenty of jazz influence at work here, and Baden's got a strong sense of improvisation as well – on titles that include "Odeon", "Vento Vadio", "Garota De Ipanema", "Para Nao Sofrer", "Tributo Ao Meira", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Samba Do Aviao", "Bolina De Papel/A Premiera Vez", and "Interrogando". Saba/Wallen Bink (Germany), 1966. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99 24.99
Killer 60s work from the great Baden Powell – two tunes done for the Saba/MPS label, both with a very jazzy vibe! "Sarava" moves fast and fierce – lots of percussion driving the tune at the bottom, including work from the great Milton Banana on drums – while Baden delivers this crisp guitar solo over the top! "Canto De Ossanha" is one of our all-time favorite tunes – originally done by Powell with Vinicius De Moraes, but even better here in a fast-driving small combo mode! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Really wonderful pressing – done from the original master tapes! Limited edition too.)

A really beautiful early album from Baden Powell, and a really unique one as well – as the set features some guest work from harmonica player Mauricio Einhorn – a very jazzy talent who was a bit like the Toots Thielemans of Brazil at the time! The combination of harmonica and acoustic guitar is great – and production is handled by Roberto Quartin – the sonic maestro who really manages to bring a lot out of this very special meeting of talents. The small combo features bass from Edison Lobo and drums from Chico Batera – and titles include "A Chuva", "Pro Forma", "Tempo Feliz", "Deixa", and "Apelo". CD

MPS, 1973. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Baden Powell's grooviest albums ever – a brilliant blend of his bossa roots with the freer 70s grooves of MPS! The album follows the mode of some of his other European recordings, but is still a bit different – in that the overall sound is a bit freer than before, with tracks that really open up beautifully – including one or two that hit a nicely heavy groove! The lovely Janine De Walyene sings these wonderful wordless vocals on some of the album's best tracks – scatting heavily on the famous jazz dance number "Blues A Volante" – and drifting moodily behind the guitar on other numbers. Other instrumentation includes bass, drums, and a bit of Brazilian percussion – and titles include the classic "Blues A Volante", plus "Violao Vagabundo", "Canto", "Ate Eu", and "Conversacao Comigo Mesmo". MPS (Germany), 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Baden Powell's first great bossa sessions in Europe – recorded in a light and lively MPS mode that's a bit different than some of his work at the time in Brazil! Rhythm is by the team of Eberhard Weber on bass and Charly Antolini on drums – both players with non-bossa roots, but who push Powell's groove into some slightly new directions – almost hailing the Brazilian influence that would show up even more strongly in European jazz in years to come! Sidney Smith also adds a bit of flute into some of the tracks on the album – underscoring the moodier moments with a subtle tone next to Powell's more pronounced guitar – and the whole thing's got a sense of poise, grace, and beauty that's simply tremendous! Titles include "Euridice", "Consolacao", "Feitinha Pro Poeta", "Dindi", "Reza", "Samba Triste", and "All The Things You Are". LP, Vinyl record album

MPS/BASF, Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great US double LP set compiling two of Baden Powell's MPS recordings from the late 60s! First up is Canto On Guitar – a stone classic from Baden Powell – and one of the greatest meetings of his Brazilian guitar with the European production styles of the late 60s! The sound is incredible – with backing is by a small group that includes bass, drums, and Brazilian percussion – all used sparely and subtly alongside Baden's fragile lines on guitar, and his moody, echoey vocals – which are recorded here in a nicely subdued way. Tracks include "Tributo A Un Amigo", "Ciegos De Noreste", "Samba En Preludio", "Hijo", and the beautiful "Tres Temas De Fe Afro-Brasilena", which evokes a lot of the feel of his classic Afro Sambas set! Next is Tristeza On Guitar – one of Baden Powell's first great bossa sessions in Europe – recorded in a light and lively MPS mode that's a bit different than some of his work at the time in Brazil! Rhythm is by the team of Eberhard Weber on bass and Charly Antolini on drums – both players with non-bossa roots, but who push Powell's groove into some slightly new directions – almost hailing the Brazilian influence that would show up even more strongly in European jazz in years to come! An excellent collection of Baden Powell's classic work from the 60s – featuring tracks originally recorded for the Elenco and Philips labels – all of them some of the most tremendous work of its time! The set list was hand-chosen by Roberto Menescal, and it features some of Baden's early bossa tunes, plus some of his more complex and complicated styles from later on in the 60s. The guitar work on the set is wonderful – acoustic, lively, and dancing – often set in very spare rhythms – and titles include "Apelo", "Viagem", "Deixa", "A Lenda Do Abaete", "E De Lei", "Lamento", "Samba Triste", and "Euridice". Beautifully spare work from guitarist Baden Powell – and a record that certainly lives up to its title! Baden's playing in a mostly unaccompanied setting for the session – working through some tunes that are markedly gentler than his bossa era numbers, but which demonstrate an amazing command of the acoustic guitar – a fragile, yet moving sensibility that's beautifully recorded throughout. A few tracks feature light percussion, or a bit of bass – but Baden's solo guitar is in the front of the mix throughout – on titles that include "Bassamba", "Brasiliana", "Fim Da Linha", "Marcia Eu Te Amo", "Na Gafiera Do Vidigal", and "Chara". ✨✧ Baden Powell & Vinicius De MoraesAfro-Sambas (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Forma/Universal (Japan), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark session from the great Baden Powell – a record that completely transformed the sound of his music, and showed the world he had much deeper talents than just simple bossa guitar! The session was done in collaboration with poet Vinicius De Moraes, with additional vocals from Quarteto Em Cy – and the sound is a completely captivating blend of rootsy percussion, airy guitar, and poetic vocals – held together with a unique magic that was hardly ever duplicated again! There's a genius here that's hard to peg, but which is apparent from the very first note – and equal credit should possibly also be given to producer Roberto Quartin, who managed to make the whole thing happen with an echoey brilliance that's almost as important as the music itself. Titles include the original version of "Canto De Ossanha", plus "Tempo de Amor", "Tristeza E Solidao", "Lamento De Exu", "Bocoche", and "Canto De Xango". (Note: there is a slight dip in sound on the first minute or so of the record – and this is a tragic flaw in the original mastering, and not in this pressing.) CD

Sadness on guitar – a perfect title for Baden Powell's work on his chosen instrument, especially the way he could bring a simple but emotive style to his music! Powell's work on guitar here is often quite spare, but beautifully handled – set up with rhythms by a small combo that includes Milton Banana on drums alongside added percussion, as well as some especially great flute from Copinha – and recorded with an echoey style that makes each new note resonate with tremendous strength. The overall groove is a bit more upbeat than some of Powell's other "on guitar" sessions for MPS – with a number of tracks that hit the livelier groove of his earlier Brazilian recordings. An early example of the genius of Baden Powell in Europe – a record that helped the bossa guitarist break out of his usual Brazilian bag, and expand his sound a bit with appreciative influences from the Parisian scene! The record still has Powell working in the style of his early work in Brazil – acoustic guitar dancing alongside jazzy bossa rhythms – but the sound is expanded a bit more with arrangements by Paul Mauriat, in a way that produces a slightly more forceful style – one that never overwhelms the bossa, but which emphasizes its best parts. There's almost a soundtrack approach here at times, and the record features a slight bit of vocals from singer Francoise Walch – and includes the tracks "Deve Ser Amor", "Adagio", "Chanson D'Hiver", "Samba Triste", "Garota De Ipanema", "Bahiana", and "Euridice". The debut album by a guitarist who might well go into the realm of the classics – as he plays here with a sense of care and balance of tone that's very much his own – handling a hollow-body electric with a sound that's simply stunning from the very first note! Hugo Lippi isn't one of those "too clean" guitarists from the vintage years – as he loves to get some richer sounds out of the guitar, while also never rasping the strings or pushing distortion at all either – always playing with a sense of clarity that's great, while also touching on the complexity of acoustic players with an effortless touch! Lippi handles his instrument with the skills of Baden Powell or Paco DeLucia – although he sounds nothing like either of them – while also using the electric side of the instrument to effortlessly create amazing colors throughout. Agustin's acoustic guitar is the main instrumentation on the set – supported by light percussion, warm basslines, and some occasional wordless female vocals – which drift in and out of the set with a really wonderful tone – kind of breezy and gentle, a lot like the way that Baden Powell would have used a female voice on some of his European recordings during the same time – nicely moody, and almost more like a musical element rather than the usual lyrical style of vocals on a record. Half the set features the American release of some great Joao Gilberto material from the early years in Brazil, with arrangements from Antonio Carlos Jobim – and the other half features excellent alto and flute solos from Mann, set to some sweet bossa backings by Jobim – with some additional guitar from a young Baden Powell! Given the Jobim arrangements on both sets of material, there's a great unified feel to the whole thing – and Herbie cuts include "Amor Em Paz", "Insensatez", "Consolacao", "Deve Ser Amor", and "One Note Samba" – which has a vocal by Jobim. An amazingly beautiful album, recorded by Vinicius De Moraes, Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro-Neves, and The Quarteto Em Cy for some sort of a special show. Castro-Neves provides some excellent bossa backing, the Quarteto girls sing chorus and over the top, Vinicius does some recitations, and Caymmi sings lead vocals. Saravah was born from the fame of Francis Lai's soundtrack for A Man & A Woman (Un Homme Et Une Femme), and from the lyrical contributions of Pierre Barouh – but immediately after, the company began pursuing a musical path like no other – taking on strands of jazz, world music, and the hippest styles in France – and creating new music that was unlike anything that had ever been recorded! Some of the best moments from the legendary label are here – including tracks that have the Art Ensemble of Chicago working with singers – Marva Broome on "Mystifying Mama", Alfred Panou on "Je Suis Un Sauvage", and Brigitte Fontaine on "Comme A La Radio" – plus more titles that include "Monsieur Chimpanze" by Michel Roques, "Sicilienne" by Maurice Vander, "Delhi Daily" by Baroque Jazz Trio, "Le Bruit Et Le Bruit" by Beatrice Arnac, "EDF Power" by EDF, "Trane's Call" by Georges Arvanitas, "Saudade" by Pierre Barouh & Baden Powell, "Je Jouais Le Piano" by Jacques Higelin, "Desert Angel" by Cohelmec Ensemble, and "80 AB" by Areski. ✨✧ Martin DennyExotic Moog ... LP
Liberty/Jackpot, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the strangest albums ever from exotica maestro Martin Denny – and one of the coolest as well! The strength of the album is already broadcast by the title – as Denny plays plenty of moog in the record, mixed with his own usual flair for exotic rhythms – expanded slightly by arrangements from Clark Gassman, who really knows how to keep up the pace in a great way. The keyboards have lots of wild sounds, with chirps and flutters that would make Perry & Kingsley proud – and the backing's a bit funkier than usual, with some nice electric basslines to keep the groove coming. Includes a great version of Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha", a remake of "Quiet Village", a moody take on "Midnight Cowboy", and a jazzy moogy version of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". ✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimLove, Strings, & Jobim ... LP
Warner, 1966. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
All the elements that make the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim so wonderful – summed up perfectly in the title of this American session from the 60s! The sounds are full of the gentle love that Jobim always brought to his writing and performance – a sense of space and style that really set him apart from so many other composers of the time – all given just the right sort of string charts from arrangers Gaya and Dedoato, whose work here echoes the space of the leader – so that things are far from the soppy use of strings on American instrumental records of the time. Other Brazilian talents are on hand to ensure that the sound is perfect – including Baden Powell and Marcos Valle on guitar, Luiz Eca on piano, and Oscar Castro Neves as well – on titles that include darkly sophisticated versions of bossa classics like "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", "Berimbau", "Samba Torto", "Chuva", and "Imagem". Nice stuff, and with a lot more bite than the "love and strings" title might imply! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Larry CoryellEuropean Impressions ... LP
Novus, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Larry Coryell began his career as a fuzzy fusion monster – often leaning into rock with both his sound and his solos – but over the 70s, he also really developed his talents as an acoustic artist – which come into beautiful focus here on a set of mostly solo recordings! Larry almost seems to channel previous acoustic giants – like Baden Powell or Paco DeLucia – but all while making a sound that's completely his own – quite rhythmic in its pulse, with some very hard action on the strings – but also with a level of sensitivity that you never would have heard in his music a decade before! The album's got a fantastic blending of the Horace Silver tunes "Song For My Father" and "Sister Sadie" – and other tracks include "Toronto Under The Sign Of Capricorn", "April Seventh", "Copenhagen Impressions", and "For Phillip & Django". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sebastiao Tapajos & Pedro Dos SantosSebastiao Tapajos & Pedro Dos Santos Vol 1 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trova/RGS (Argentina), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Sebastiao Tapajos really sounds wonderful here – playing in a spare setting, but a lively one too – thanks to work from percussionist Pedro Dos Santos, who plays a wide variety of instruments that really keep things groovy! There's a feel here that's a bit like some of Baden Powell's small combo records – kind of a post-bossa approach, with more complexity in the guitar work – and a groove that never stops being interesting – thanks to Pedro's work on tamborin, berimbau, tumbadora, and a host of other instruments too. Includes "Estudio No 1", "Despedida De Mangueira", "Encuentro Marcado", "Cantico Del Agua", "Himalaya", "Santarem", "Sorongaio", "Solfeggeto", "Cajita De Musica", "Munganga", "Primavera" and "Solo De Bambu". CD features bonus tracks – "Primavera/Favela", "Samba Em Preludio/Despedida De Mangueira", "Munganga", "Todo E Moda", and "Sorongaio". CD

MPS/Crippled Dick (Germany), Late 60s/1970s. Very Good+ 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An excellent set of funky jazz tracks from the legendary MPS label! The folks at Crippled Dick have outdone themselves this time – and have even surpassed their previous set of MPS grooves by collecting a totally excellent batch of cuts, most of which haven't ever been reissued before! If you pay attention to jazz funk at all, you'll know that the German-based MPS label is one of the world's best sources for incredible grooves – and the label had a 20 year tradition of mixing musics from many different sources, and for delivering some of the most groundbreaking funk of the 20th century! Titles on this stunning set include "Titty Chickie Fitterbug" by Jasper Van't Hof, "Faces In Reflection 2" by George Duke, "Scratches" by Charly Antolini, "Knock Out" by Dieter Reith, "Miss Maggie" by Rolf Kuhn, "Powerstart" by Roland Kovac, "Baiafrock/Volker" by The New Dave Pike Set, "Volcano's Daughter" by Nelson Riddle, and "Bulgarian Beans" by Rimona Francis. ✨✧ Luiz BonfaBrazil's King Of The Bossa Nova & Guitar ... LP
Philips, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Luiz Bonfa albums we've ever heard! The record was recorded in Paris in 1962 – and it's got a clean lively bossa sound that reminds us a lot more of the catchy early work by Joao Gilberto and Baden Powell than Bonfa's sometimes flowery sessions from the same time. There's a tight jazz combo backing him up – with drums, bass, and flute – and a number of tracks have some wonderful breathy vocals next to Bonfa's driving guitar. There's more than a few great uptempo numbers – and the whole album's really a mad bossa treat! Titles include "Bonfa Nova", "Teu Olhar Triste", "Lila", "Sorrindo", "Bossa Em Re", and "Dor Que Faz Doer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charlie ByrdBossa Nova Pelos Passaros ... LP
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Charlie Byrd was one of the first American players to record bossa nova tunes – but although his work with Stan Getz has always been well-documented, some of the titles under his own name can be quite hard to come by. This is one of the best ones that Charlie cut on his own – and it features tight guitar work in a mode that's similar to that used by Baden Powell on his early bossa recordings, augmented by trio rhythms – plus some occasional larger backings by Walter Raim, and some extended group settings that feature Charlie Hampton on alto, Earl Swope on trombone, and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. Tracks include "Ho Ba La La", "Samba Triste", "Yvone", "O Barquinho", "Un Abraco Do Bonfa", and "O Passaro". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe one of the strangest covers ever used for a John Fahey record – very 80s! Yet his guitar work here is spot-on – in a setting that features extra guitar and bottleneck from Terry Robb – plus percussion and bass on a re-recorded version of "River Medley", next to other tunes that include a great reworking of Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha", as "Let Go", plus Bola Sete's "Pretty Afternoon" – and other titles that include "Lost Lake", "Black Mommy", and "Lights Out". ✨✧ Fabiano Do NascimentoDanca Dos Tempos ... CD
Now Again, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one that's got an amazingly timeless feel – like the best early 70s material from Brazilian artists like Airto, Hermeto Pascoal, or Egberto Gismonti! The music of Fabiano Do Nascimento has a similar genre-breaking quality to these giants – not straight jazz, but very jazzy in parts – not traditional Brazilian roots, either – but very schooled in the strongest elements from decades of creativity on that scene – all wrapped up in this fresh, new blend that's completely mesmerizing right from the start! Most instrumentation is acoustic, and relatively simple – guitar, percussion, drums, and vocals – but the arrangements are wonderful, and fold these familiar elements together in ways that are completely unique. The legendary Airto guests on the record – but the vision here is clearly that of Fabiano Do Nascimento – as he mixes together works by Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell, and other Brazilian composers with some bold new ideas of his own. Titles include "Forro Brasil", "Minha Ciranda", "Etude", "Primeira Estrella", "Tupi", "Se Ela Preguntar", "Tocatta Em Ritmo De Samba", and "Nana". CD

✨✧ Nana VasconcelosNana – Nelson Angelo – Novelli ... LP
Saravah/Altercat (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible trio of talents – three Brazilian giants, but all turning out a very unique session that was originally issued on the famous French Saravah label – home to some really groundbreaking music in the 70s! The set features Nana Vasconcelos on berimbau, percussion, and a bit of vocals – working alongside Nelson Angelo on guitar, piano, and organ – and getting a bit of help on bass and guitar from Novelli. Things start quite spare – with lots of haunting berimbau lines – and the album then builds up the sound as things move on, layering in the other instruments for a richer sound, yet one that's still quite acoustic and relatively spare overall – almost to the career of Vasconcelos what the Paris recordings were to that of Baden Powell! Titles include "No Sul Do Polo Norte", "Pinote", "Garimpo", "Baiao Do Acordar", "Aranda", "No Norte Do Polo Sul", and "Toshiro". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from Walter Wanderley – a set that's much more complicated than his earlier trio records for Verve – and which really expands the sound with a host of added elements! Wanderley's core organ bossa groove is amplified wonderfully here with the addition of guitar, vibes, horns, and other elements – all of which help to change the rhythms and move the groove way past just simple stock bossa. Walter plays a bit of electric piano too – hinting at work on later albums – and other players include Jerome Richardson on flute, Bobby Rosengarden on vibes, John Pizzarelli on guitar, and even a bit of vocals from Marge Dodson. There's a wonderful variety of tunes on the set – including Joao Donato's "Amazonas", Baden Powell's "Canto De Ossanha", and Bob Crewe's "Music To Watch Girls By" – plus other gems like "Sensuous", "Sambao", "Arrinho Atoa", "Kee Ka Roo", and "The Bobo". ✨✧ Charlie ByrdBlues Sonata ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the more ambitious records ever cut by guitarist Charlie Byrd – a set that begins with a side-long suite of tracks – the "Blue Sonata", which features Byrd playing in a much more complex way than usual! The sonata features three parts, all composed by Byrd, and Charlie plays acoustic with just a bit of trio backing – mixing jazz guitar modes with some slight serious music undercurrents – in ways that almost remind us of later European dates by Baden Powell. The rest of the record has Byrd on electric guitar, with piano from Barry Harris, bass from Keter Betts, and drums from Buddy Deppenschmidt – all on more standard jazz tracks that include "Jordu", "That Ole Devil Called Love", and "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart". A stunning lost bossa nova soundtrack! The score was penned for the 1967 film Garota De Ipanema (Girl From Ipanema), and although you've heard some of the tracks before in other versions, the overall album is very nice – and is a wonderful tribute to the early days of bossa nova! Jobim and Vinicius perform, as well as Baden Powell, Tamba Trio, Nara Leao, Elis Regina, Ronnie Von, Chico Buarque, and Quarteto Em Cy – and titles include "Por Voce", "Chorino", "Aria Para Se Morrer De Amor", "Rancho Das Namoradas", and "Tema Da Desilusao". We think some of the material might have popped up on other albums from time to time, but there's still enough stuff here that we hadn't heard elsewhere – and that we like a lot! ✨✧ Fabiano Do NascimentoYkytu ... LP
Now Again, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most personal album to date from Fabiano Do Nascimento – a set that continues the Brazilian acoustic guitar legacy of players like Baden Powell, Egberto Gismonti, and some of the older greats – but which finds a way to express its sound in a very contemporary way! Fabiano plays a variety of guitars here, but also mixes the record with this airy sound that layers in bits of wordless vocals and other effects – all used gently, but beautifully – with this spacious, open sound that really fits the image of the landscape on the cover, yet which also has a lot more warmth than that picture too. There's almost an ECM vibe to the record at times, but the sound is a bit more dynamic – and titles include "Noite", "Ykytu", "Pelas Ruas", "Flower Of Life", "Corrida", "Planalto", and "Rio Tapajos". ✨✧ Fabiano Do Nascimento & Itibere CollectiveRio Bonito ... LP
Rings (Japan), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful record – one that takes off from the spare sound of earlier albums by guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento, and adds in some smaller group instrumentation that really sends things over the top! Fabiano's still got all the amazing touches on his instrument – played at a level that's in a legacy of Brazilian acoustic right up there with Baden Powell or Luiz Bonfa – mixed this time around with a shifting palette of instrumentation that includes percussion, flutes, violin, cello, and tenor – all elements used in ways that are still spare, yet shade the music in wonderfully! While we've loved Fabiano's airy explorations in the past, we love him even more here – as the album's as full of color and scope as you'd guess from the image on the cover, or its evocative reference to Rio Bonito – on titles that include "Strings For My Guitar", "Coletivo Universal", "Kaleidoscope", "Retratos", "Theme In C", and "Emotivo".
