✨✧ Nella DoddsThis Is A Girl's Life – Complete Wand Recordings 1964/1965 ... CD
Wand/Kent (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nella Dodds may not be one of the best-known names in 60s soul – but she's a heck of a wonderful singer, as you'll hear on these killer sides she cut for the Wand label in the middle of the decade! Nella was part of the Philly soul scene at the time of these tracks, and there's a definite Philly influence going on here – a bit of sweetness on the vocals, a nice groove on the bottom, and a level of production and presentation that's all top-shelf, all the way through! Nella never cut a full album for Wand, but the CD features both sides of six different singles, plus previously unissued tracks from the same sessions – making for a 15 track package that finally gives Dodds her due. Titles include "Come Back Baby", "A Girl's Life", "P's & Q's", "Honey Boy", "Finders Keepers Losers Weepers", "You Don't Love Me Anymore", "Maybe Baby", "Gee Whiz", "I Just Gotta Have You", "Come See About Me", "Dream Boy", and "First Date". ✨✧ African & Afro-American DrumsAfrican & Afro-American Drums ... LP
Folkways, 1954. Very Good+ 2LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
A drum-heavy spectacular – recorded with a really rootsy feel! The first half of the material was recorded in Africa – not credited especially well, but done with a stripped-down sound that's very heavy on drums and other odd percussion instruments – recorded in that rough, loud Folkways style that really makes the music sound nicely bombastic. The remaining tracks on the set are from a variety of North and South American locales – Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and even the US – as Baby Dodds turns in a solo on the final track! Titles include "Ceremonial Drums", "Dance Drums", "Stamping Tubes", "Salute To A Chief", "Sit Log Talking Drum", "Djuka Dance Drums", "Lucumi", "Jumping Dance Drums", "Cuminia Drums", "Rhythms For The Deity Ogoun", and "Jazz Drumming". ✨✧ Jo JonesDrums By Jo Jones – The Historic & Legendary Jazz Drumming Sessions ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1973. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Some of the coolest recordings ever made by the legendary Jo Jones – two albums that were initially presented almost as jazz instruction material, but which more than stand strongly on their own as solo drum session! Jones is already a well-known force in jazz – but hearing him like this, you'll be even more surprised at his talents – as the recordings not only feature Jo working through a huge amount of rhythms and changes, but also performing tributes to some of his favorite jazz drummers in the second half of the set! Many numbers feature spoken introductions by Jones, and the whole thing almost feels like some intimate session – but the strength of his performance is tremendous, and the lack of other instruments really let you hear that amazing way that Jo had of working all over the space of the drum kit. Titles include "Latin Rhythms", "Drum Solo No 1", "Basics Gadgets Effects", "Baby Dodds", "Making Changes", "Colours", "Chick Webb", "Baby Lovett", "Walter Johnson", "Sonny Greer", "Unnamed Drummer From St Louis", and "Rim Shots/Tom Tom". ✨✧ VariousSwan's Soul Sides – Dance The Philly ... CD
Swan/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Swan Records was a real powerhouse of Philly Soul back in the 60s – a label whose efforts really set the scene for countless more Philly achievements to come! Swan was primarily a pop label – with some big hits (including early US release of Beatles singles) to its name – but the company was also on the scene to cut some of the best soul in Philadelphia as the 60s got going – a great deal of which is brought together on this set! Swan's sides often have a Northern Soul vibe that rivals the best of Detroit, especially labels away from Motown – and the pop experience gave the label a quality of production and professionalism that few other labels could match! Yet there's also no pop commercialism here, either – as these sides often step back and really let the artist do their thing – as you'll hear on 26 tracks that include "Everybody Crossfire" by Sammy Stevens, "Gotta Draw The Line" by The Three Degrees, "Have Faith In Me" by Sugar & Spice, "Put Yourself In My Place" by Azie Mortimer, "In Love" by Tony Galla & The Rising Sons, "Misery" by Eddie Carlton, "Run Run" by The Persianettes, "You're Everything" by The Showmen, "Put That Woman Down" by John Leach, "Who Do You Love" by The Sapphires, "Handsome Boy" by The Ladybirds, "Trying To Find My Baby" by Troy Dodds, and "Two Steps Ahead" by Herb Johnson. ✨✧ VariousCaribbean In America – 1915 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 10s/1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. The package has the usual fantastic Fremeaux presentation – with a big booklet of historical notes, in both French and English, to support 66 titles that include "Jamaica Farewell" by Sam Cooke, "Salty Fish Aki Rice" by Ruth Wallis, "Bajan Girl" by Lionel Belasco, "Sly Mongoose" by Sam Manning, "El Gallero" by Dioris Valladares & Angel Viloria, "El Mambo Diablo" by Tito Puente, "Hey Little Girl" by Professor Longhair, "Un Poco Loco" by Bud Powell, "Chee Koo Baby" by Lloyd Price, "Shrinking Up Fast" by Camille Howard, "Ojai" by Joe Lutcher, "Salee Dame" by Albert Nicholas & Baby Dodds, "Inside" by Hector The Ram, "Run Come See Jerusalem"b y Stan Wilson, "I Learn A Merengue" by Robert Mitchum, "Afro Blue" by Cal Tjader, "La Maricutana" by Damiron & Chapuseaux, "Magical Joe" by Herb Jeffries, "Begin The Beguine" by Charlie Parker, "Make It Do" by Slim Gaillard, "Guitarambo" by Mickey Baker, and "Don't Touch Me Nylon" by The Charmer (aka Louis Farrakhan).
