AwakeningMirage (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. Used ... $29.99 34.99
No Mirage here – as the album's got a presence that's impossible to deny – a solid, soulful uttering from this key Chicago combo of the 70s! The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Most cuts are instrumental, and recorded beautifully – but one number, "The Ultimate Frontier", also features vocals from Anita Jefferies. Other cuts include "Slinky", "Mirage", "Just a Little Peace", and "March On". CD
(Out of print – and includes obi!)

Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent funky fusion group from Chicago – and one of the best ensembles to record for the Black Jazz label! The group's made up of hip Chicago underground players – and includes Ken Chaney on electric piano, Ari Brown on saxes, and Frank Gordon on trumpet – a lineup that comes together with the same sort of righteous energy and soulful power as Windy City contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Earth Wind & Fire! On this first LP, they jam with a mix of righteous funk and spiritual soul jazz, mixing electric piano, choppy reeds, and tight horns with a powerful rhythm backing that never goes too over the top, and which stays in a good modal mode that works great for the soloists – soaringly expressive at a personal level, yet coming together with a really righteous group feel in the end. Tracks include "Jupiter", "Brand New Feeling", "Convulsions", and "Kera's Dance". CD

A&M/Horizon, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Great stuff from Sonny Fortune – emerging here as a strong leader with a spiritual soulful style that was steeped in traditions from labels like Strata East and Muse, but which also worked quite well in the slightly-expanded setting of A&M's Horizon projects. The group here is a well-selected one – with John Hicks and Kenny Barron on piano, Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Wayne Dockery and Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. Fortune really knows when to sit back and let the group groove – but he also burns away strongly on his own solos. Titles include "Triple Threat", "Nommo", "Sunshower", and "Awakening". A mindblowing album from Ahmad Jamal – a fantastic start to the 70s, and a set of music that shows just how far the pianist had come in just a few short years! The album's all acoustic, but has some of that spacious flow that Jamal would bring to his work on Fender Rhodes – with an approach that's even more open in terms of song structure than his earlier trio material – as if Jamal's choosing to omit more notes than he's including – but all with a quality that still keeps the music very full and rhythmic – pulsating with a special sort of energy that's neither Bill Evans, nor McCoy Tyner – but instead this really amazing sound that's all Ahmad's own. The trio features equally wonderful work from Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and titles include "The Awakening", "I Love Music", "Patterns", "Wave", and "Dolphin Dance". This successful late 70s outing from Walden is one of his most all-star records – stuffed with great guest appearances by singers and musicians that include Bobby Lyle, Greg Phillinganes, The Brecker Brothers, Carlos Santana, Hiram Bullock, The Pointer Sisters, and Angela Winbush! The sound's a bit tighter and more professional – in keeping with the sound you'd expect from such an elite bunch – but Walden's jazzy approach to smooth soul is still nicely in place on the best cuts. ✨✧ Nicole MitchellMandorla Awakening 2 – Emerging Worlds ... CD
FPE, 2017. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the deepest records we've ever heard from Nicole Mitchell – and that's saying a lot, given all her other fantastic albums! This richly-textured piece was first commissioned in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the AACM – that legendary jazz organization of which Mitchell is a part – and as a whole, it really demonstrates both the strong legacy of the group, and the farther territory it's reached over its decades-long span – music that has pushed past the initial moment of improvisation, through the AACM's standard of "great black music" as a replacement for classical – to the sorts of spiritual, cosmic sounds that Mitchell does so well. In addition to Nicole on flute and electronics, the group also features Avery R Young on vocals, Kojiro Umezaki on shakuhachi, Renee Baker on violin, Tatsu Aoki on bass and shamisen, Jovia Armstrong on percussion, Tomeka Reid on cello and banjo, and Alex Wing on electric guitar, oud, and theremin – a mix of instruments that is global in scope, electric and acoustic, and really used to effortlessly express the spiritual vision of Mitchell. The notes go into great detail about the thoughts and inspiration behind the music – and titles include "Egoes War", "The Chalice", "Dance Of Many Hands", "Listening Embrace", "Forestwall Timewalk", "Staircase Struggle", "Shiny Divider", "Timewrap", and "Mandorla Island". Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work by this obscure LA legend! Jimmy Woods was one of the unsung geniuses of the west coast scene at the start of the 60s – and the few recordings he ever made stand as some of the best examples of how the avant garde was feeding into the hard bop scene out there – and with fantastic results! Jimmy's alto is hard and biting throughout – and although it veers in the direction of Ornette Coleman at times, the overall conception is very much Woods' own – with a starkly clear voice that should have made him one of the key figures in 60s modern jazz. The rest of the group includes the great (and also underrecorded) Joe Gordon on trumpet, plus Amos Trice on piano, Milt Turner on drums, and either Gary Peacock or the highly rhythmic Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Awakening", "Roma", "Not Yet", "New Twist", "Little Jim", and "Anticipation". CD

Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer electric piano work from the mighty Mike Longo – recorded at a time when he was definitely at the height of his powers! The album sports a rare Mainstream Records appearance from James Moody – who was a frequent partner of Longos on sessions at the time – particularly on some of Dizzy Gillespie's funky records – which bear a lot of similarity to the sharp-edged grooves on this one! The rhythm section is wonderfully tight, and a big part of the success of the set – as they keep things grooving with a slightly sharper edge than some of Longo's other records – thanks to bass from Ron Carter, drums from Mickey Roker, and even a bit of extra congas from Dizzy Gillespie, of all people! Other players include Moody on alto, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Jones on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Titles include "Just To Let You Know", "A Piece Of Resistance", "The Awakening", "Pass It", and "Bitchin". CD

Damn great work from Chicago flautist Nicole Mitchell – and another new chapter of her mighty talents! The album's a quartet session that beautifully swings between straight jazz modes and some more creative sounds – never as far out as some of Mitchell's more avant work, but always pushing the boundaries in really great ways. The set's quite different than some of the fuller, more ambitious projects Mitchell has undertaken in recent years – and it's also a change from some of the more intimate solo and duet modes she's used too – and the group features heavy contributions from guitarist Jeff Parker, plus bass from Harrison Bankhead, and drums from Avreeayl Ra. Titles include "Curly Top", "Center Of The Earth", "Snowflakes", "Awakening", "There", and "FOC". CD

Dreamland (Austria), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that's overflowing with freshness and power – a key part of the now-huge legacy of the great Muriel Grossmann – easily one of the hippest saxophonists on the global scene in recent years! The album's got some of the modal currents of more recent albums, but also maybe comes across with a bit more of an edge at times – especially when the rhythms get a bit looser, served up by Robert Landfermann on bass and Christian Lillinger on drums – graced with really fantastic work on guitar from Radomir Milojkovic, who has this way of moving between rhythm and melody that's really wonderful. Milojkovic is a truly unique talent, and has added plenty to Muriel's records over the years – different than, but in a similar way to the duo of Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo years ago. Grossmann blows flute, alto, and soprano – and titles include "Wien", "Trust", "Awakening", "Peaceful River", and "Ornette". CD

Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Tremendous work from Joshua Abrams – a set that's very different than some of his other work in recent years, but every bit as great! The set's got a lean group – Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, Gerald Cleaver on drums, and the great Ari Brown on tenor – of Awakening fame – a group that delivers a more stripped-down version of some of Josh's more spiritual ideals – but in ways that also touch base with more conventional jazz expression! Make no mistake, there's nothing conventional about this set – the approach is very unique, and very striking – and the presence of the younger musicians really sets Ari Brown on fire, and reminds us of what a great soloist he can be when he's pushed to his limits. Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". BBE (UK), 2023. New Copy Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
One of the most fantastic albums in years from the mighty Kirk DeGiorgio – a set that draws upon 70s sound library influences as a way for Kirk to really unfurl some of the jazziest elements in his music! Way back when nobody was ever referencing jazz for club tracks, DeGiorgio was always very clear to share his inspirations – a long-running love of keyboard giants from the 70s, like Herbie Hancock and George Duke – but not in a way that sought to ape their sounds, but expand on the ideas they first brought into the world – which is definitely the case here! Some rhythms have a nice evolution past London broken beat modes, and the whole thing's got a wonderfully cosmic vibe – served up on tunes that include "Chicago Shift", "Watts Awakening", "Dayton Daydreams", "Khumunu", "Beth El", "Shinar", "Cincinnati Sunrise", "Harlem Homerun", and "The Oakland Feel". Julie DriscollJulie Driscoll 1969 ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 22.99
Julie Driscoll's come a long way from her years with Brian Auger here – stepping out in a freer sound that marks the shift in the British scene from beat group grooving to jazz-rock jamming. The session features a host of likely suspects from that hip side of the scene where avant jazz and rock merge – a lineup that includes Keith Tippett on piano, Elton Dean on saxes, Chris Spedding and Brian Godding on guitars, and Nick Evans on trombone – and Julie's vocal style is finely tuned to match the craft of the players on the set, with with fantastically deft twist and turns! She's a lot more open-ended in her singing, with less of the R&B inspired approaches of the late 60s, and more of the expansive vocalizations that were showing up in the work of other European vocalists of the 70s. Titles include "Leaving It All Behind", "Break-Out", "A New Awakening", "Walk Down", and "I Nearly Forgot – But I Went Back". CD

Raw Canvas (UK), 2006. Used ... $7.99
It's been way too long since the last 4 Hero album – but it's definitely been worth the wait, as they're even more focused and fabulous than before! There's a real "instant classic" feel to this record – the kind of feeling that folks must have got when first buying Rotary Connection albums in the late 60s, or Herbie Hancock fusion sides in the 70s – a jaw-dropping sense of perfection and invention from the very first notes, rolling forward into a set of tunes that delight the ears at each new twist and turn! There's both a sense of classic composition and freeform creation going on here – one that respects the past, but grabs its hand strongly for a bold journey into the future! The rhythms are amazing, the keyboards incredible, and there's none of the cliches here that mar the music of so many others inspired by 4 Hero's work of years back. One of the key factors to success is a strongly song-based approach – served up with vocals from Carina Andersson, Lady Alma, Darien Brockington, Bembe Segue, Talita Long, Face, Kaidi Tatham, Ursula Rucker, Jody Watley, and even Larry Mizell! Tracks include "The Awakening", "Sophia", "Superwoman", "Look Inside", "Sink Or Swim", "Play With The Changes", "Give In", "Something In The Way", "Morning Child", "Take My Time", and "Stoke Up The Fire". A spiritual soul jazz supergroup – featuring some of our favorite players of the Strata East 70s scene! This obscure recording was made in the mid 80s, but it's got the feel of the best 70s work by Harper, Fortune, and Cowell – a richly expressive session built around original compositions, and long modal playing in a Love Supreme tradition! The group's a quintet featuring Sonny Fortune on alto, Billy Harper on tenor, Stanley Cowell on piano, Billy Hart on drums, and Reggie Workman on bass – most of whom, minus Fortune, played together on a similar session (called Such Great Friends – not to be confused with this one!) a few years earlier. The feel of the album's like some of Harper's best from the 70s – very open, but never too free, with lots of stretching, yearning passages from the rhythm section – making for a perfect platform for the solos of Harper and Fortune. A fantastic collaboration between Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino and avant bassist Reggie Workman – one that might seem unusual if you only know Hino's later work, but which was part of a few key collaborations that Hino and Workman did together at the start of the 70s – part of a real spiritual awakening in the trumpeter's music! The tracks are long and very expressive – and the group is mostly Japanese – with Hino on trumpet, Workman on bass, Motohiko Hino on drums, Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar, Mideo Ichikawa on electric piano, Yuji Imamura on conga, and Takao Uematsu on bass clarinet and tenor – all working together in a spirit that's clearly caught the imagination of the post-Coltrane years, and which is completely different than the straighter hardbop that Hino was recording just a few years previously. Sweetly soulful fusion from the Atlanta scene – a wonderfully righteous album, and a pretty darn obscure one as well! Life Force play here in a style that reminds us a lot of the artists on the Black Jazz label in the decade before – particularly the group Awakening, with their great blend of sharp edges and funkier moments – but also a bit like Rudolph Johnson, given the strong reed work in the set. The combo's a sextet – with alto and soprano by Joe Jennings, tenor and soprano by Howard Nicholson, and keyboards by Oliver Wells – and although the set was recorded at the start of the 80s, the overall sound is much more 70s indie soul fusion overall – nicely stripped-down and never too jamming – with just as much focus on the core rhythmic elements and grooves of the tunes as there is the bolder solos of the group members. Really lovely music from saxophonist Jasmine Myra – an artist who's a great fit for the contemporary spiritual sound of the Gondwana label! Myra has great ties to the contemporary British scene, and as with some of her contemporaries, she's far more than just a soloist – as the album resonates with her strength as both a leader and composer – music that moves beyond just being a showcase for her reeds, and which also has this larger vision that's really wonderful! Some tracks are straightforward, others are more ambitious, and other players include Ben Haskins on guitar, Jasper Green on piano, and Alice Roberts on harp – all musicians who really help Jasmine carve out a wonderful first statement on record – on titles that include "Morningtide", "1000 Miles", "Words Left Unspoken", "Horizons", and "Awakening". JMI, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 29.99
A really striking set of duets – one that opens up a whole new chapter in the career of pianist Helen Sung – and which maybe also offers one of the first instances we've seen of just a piano and trumpet coming together for a record! We love the music of Marquis Hill, and the sharp phrasing of the trumpeter is a perfect choice to match Helen's work here on the piano (and a bit of Fender Rhodes) – as the pair move beautifully through a set that features mostly original compositions by Sung. There's a loose feel to the tunes, but things are never too free either – and both players really feel as if they have been working together in this mode for a long time – as you'll hear on titles that include "Measure", "The Window", "Awakening", "Everybody's Waltz", "Perpetual", and "Playtime". The continuing evolution of the Comet Records label in France – a full flowering of all the ideas the company was first working with at the end of the 90 – when they began to find a new home for older Afro Funk styles and artists, but also had ways of updating their modes to a 21st Century approach! That sound is very much in full force here – served up on some longer tracks that were only issued as singles, and which appear here for the first time ever – really showing the way that Comet and its artists were pushing past the straight Afro Funk modes that so many others were using at the time. Funk Night, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A special sort of project from the great Misha Panfilov, but one that's very much in line with the psychedelic sound of his funky 45s – as the set here is all instrumental, and features tracks recorded by Misha for a stage performance! Yet this is hardly familiar soundtrack music – as the performance is one with a lot of movement, and Panfilov's funky touches are perfect for the setting – almost as if he's going back to territory from some of those famous Gus Giordano records from years back – as Misha mixes his own fuzzy guitars, keyboards, and electronics with some added drums that really kick things into gear! There's also some guest flute and Wurlitzer in a few spots too – but most of the work is just Misha and the drums, getting nice and funky amidst that spacey production that always makes any of his projects so great. Sublime work from Billy Harper – one of those rare Japanese-only sessions he cut in the 70s – really tremendous stuff that blows away most of his other (already excellent) work from other points around the globe! Billy's blowing some really mighty tenor here – at a level that makes him one of the most righteous, spiritual players of the 70s – a player we'd rank right up there with John Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders at their best, working here with a bold musical vision that's all his own! The long tracks really give Harper plenty of room to stretch out – and he never goes too far out, even with the freedom – hanging tight to some tremendous rhythms from Mickey Tucker on piano, Gregg Maker on bass, and Malcolm Pinson on drums – and getting great help from trumpeter Everett Hollins in the frontline. Intrada, 1969/1971. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great soundtracks from the legendary Michel Legrand – including a huge amount of never-heard work from The Picasso Summer! First up, though, is Summer Of 42 – one of Michel Legrand's greatest moments of the 70s – a sweetly romantic score that lasted a lot longer than the film it was written to accompany! The soundtrack features the haunting "Summer Of 42 Theme", also known as "The Summer Knows" – a drifting sad melody, done up here in a number of versions, and combined with some other orchestral themes written for various emotional passages in the film. Titles include "High IQ", "The Picasso Suite", "Summer Song", "Montage – But Not Full Picasso", "The Danger", and "Awakening Awareness". Picasso Summer is even more incredible – with a haunting main theme that's somewhere in the same territory as "42", but a really big range of music that extrapolates that theme with other warm melodies and the kind of perfectly balanced sensitive sounds we love so much from Legrand. The movie itself is quite obscure – an Albert Finney road trip in Europe that's almost Legrand's answer to Henry Mancini's Two For The Road – although Michel's music is often much more complex. 2CD package features the 11 track "Picasso Summer" suite, plus 23 more tracks from the soundtrack – including "Summer Song", "High IQ", "Chemin De Fer", "Pentaque", "To The Gates", "Lonely Two", "Apart", "The Cape & The Gore", "The Dancer", "Not Picasso", and "Head For Home". Unreleased genius from British altoist Mike Osborne – and a set that easily matches his classic albums of the 70s! The double-length set was recorded live in the mid 70s, and is issued here for the first time – a wonderfully tight trio outing that features Osborne's alto alongside the bass of Harry Miller and drums of Tony Levin – in a mode that's decidedly Coltrane-influenced, and which has a searching, spiritual quality that's even deeper than most other British work of the time! We've never heard Osborne play with so much feeling, and Miller's basswork is wonderful too – really underscoring the sound with a full, rich quality that grounds the whole proceedings nicely – a soaring, majestic energy that's a far cry from some of the unstructured freedom from other Brit groups of the same stretch. Tremendous throughout – and with cuts that include "One For George", "Alfie", "Almost Home Kathy", "More Mike", "Ossie's Opener", "Awakening Spirit", and "Cousin Mary". CD

A really beautiful record, and one that's a bit hard to describe – but which is summed up perfectly by the "Soft Power" name of the group! The music is a mix of jazz and other instrumental modes – with some currents of keyboards and guitars that almost take us back to the hipper, more interesting instrumental corners of the UK scene in the 80s – such as a group like Dif Juz – but inflected here with more jazz soloing, and some tracks that are definitely straight jazz through and through! There's lots of great Fender Rhodes on the record, courtesy of Staffan Sodergard – and the lineup also features Lauri Vertanenen on tenor, Antti Vaukonen on alto and flute, Otto Kyrklund on guitar, and Mikale Jurmu on drums and percussion – who also vocalizes a bit in this cool wordless way with the bassit, Iiro Tulkki. Very hard to pin down, but very rewarding – with titles that include "The Water Rooms", "Final Blow", "Window Of Opportunity", "Awakening", "Brink Of Extinction", and "Orange Red Yellow". Writer Paul Steinbeck has already given us a great book on the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – but this time around, he looks at the larger scene from which they came, the groundbreaking AACM moment in jazz, which emerged in Chicago in the late 60s! Steinbeck provides some cultural and historical context, but also focuses in on key recordings that helped to define the special genius of AACM musicians and their united vision – with an approach that's build around different records on a chapter by chapter basis – even leading up to a few more recent recordings that show the continuing influence and growth of the organization. Along the way, Steinbeck provides some musical notations and deeper analysis of the sounds from his perspective as a musicologist – very illuminating to us, as we tend to have much more of a visceral response to these records – a lineup that includes Air Time by Air, Levels & Degrees Of Light by Muhal Richard Abrams, Sound by Roscoe Mitchell, Voyager by George Lewis, Nonaah by Roscoe Mitchell, Composition 76 by Anthony Braxton, Ten Freedom Summers by Wadada Leo Smith, and Mandorla Awakening II by Nicole Mitchell. The set was recorded in the same stretch as the best work from that legendary group, but never came out on LP at the time – and only saw a CD release in the 90s – quite a shame, as the great Plunky Nakabinde plays reeds on the album, and also helps give the whole thing a vibe that's sharp, right on the money, and does a fantastic job of blending Asante's percussion with some wider musical ideas. Oykerama is previously known for his work in the group Hedzoleh Soundz – and there's a similar genre-crossing vibe going on here – as you'll discover on cuts that include "Sabi", "Follow Me", "Asanta Sana", "Never Fly Away From The Funk", "Play A Sweet Rhythm On Them Drums", "Mother Africa", "Kazi's Awakening", and "To The Ancestors". The music here isn't at all like Charles or Coltrane – although it's informed by the same spirit as the latter – as Panduranga draws on lots of elements from Eastern thought to create the lyrics of these long songs of praise – tunes that often have currents of electro soul in the instrumentation, but which flow out in ways that have the longer-form quality you'd find in Indian vocal music. The New Groove referred to in the title is most likely soul jazz – as Bud's in extremely soulful company, working with a combo that includes Dennis Budimir on guitar, Carmell Jones on trumpet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Tracks are a bit longer than usual for Shank, with less of the angular west coast touches, and more of an open-ended groove-based approach. Titles include "The Awakening", "New Groove", "White Lightnin", "Sultry Serenade", and "Liddledabllduya". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Shabaka HutchingsAfrikan Culture (maroon vinyl pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue solo debut from Shabaka Hutchings – the London-based reed player who's been making huge waves in Comet Is Coming and Sons Of Kemet – stepping out here with an equally great musical vision of his own! The style here is more spiritual and meditative – as if Shabaka is turning inward, and working a mix of flutes and saxes in ways that are very organic and personal – often using subtle currents of sound next to his acoustic activity at the core, as he bridges a legacy of 70s expression and some of the more contemporary modes on the UK scene. Titles include "Explore Inner Space", "Call It A European Paradox", "Memories Don't Live Like People Do", "Rebirth", "Dimension Of Subtle Awareness", "Ital Is Vita", "Ritual Awakening", and "Black Meditation". Rebirth/P-Vine (Japan), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
Later work from reedman Wendell Harrison and the Tribe Records scene – a set that's got a slightly tighter feel than some of his earlier work, but still a relatively soulful vibe overall! Harrison leads the group on tenor, flute, and clarinet – but there's definitely a collective vibe to the music – which also features Harold McKinney on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Ralph Jones on soprano sax – part of a shifting lineup of artists who change from track to track – including Leon Thomas and Pamela Wise, who each sing a bit on the record. Thomas appears on the great tracks "Where Am I" and "Love Dream", both of which have a great mellow soul jazz vibe – and other cuts get a bit more out, and have more of the soaring spiritualism that got the Tribe scene going in the early 70s. Other titles include "Tons & Tons Of BS", "Winter", and "He's The One We All Knew". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wendell HarrisonReawakening – The Wendell Harrison Anthology ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at one of the greatest visionary players of the Detroit 70s scene – saxophonist Wendell Harrison, a really spiritual artist with a deeply soulful side! The set does a great job of bringing together the 2 sides of Harrison's career – his earlier righteous jazz sides for Tribe Records from the 70s, and his later work for his own label Wenha – mostly recorded in the early 80s with a laidback and mellow soul jazz sound! Harrison's a bit like Gary Bartz – in that he sometimes recorded in harder-edge styles with a really full-on sound, while at other times he could kick back and get more mellow – in a sweetly soulful style that often featured his work on the sax snaking around warm soul vocals. We actually love this second side of Harrison's career a heck of a lot, and the collection does a great job of pulling out the best of the best from this stretch – getting past some of the weaker cuts on a few of Harrison's 80s albums, to pull together the best ones – and sit them alongside a few tasty Tribe Records rarities! Titles include the 7 inch single "Farewell To The Welfare", plus "Consciousness", "Take Time Out", "The Wok", "Ginseng Love", "Pojo", "Tons & Tons Of BS", "Where Am I Vol 2 – Angry Young Man Part 1", and "Belle Isle".
