✨✧ Audio OneInternational Report ... LP
Audiographic, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
It's hard to go wrong with an improvising lineup like this – a large ensemble of Chicago musicians that includes Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams, and Dave Rempis on a variety of reeds – plus Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Josh Berman on cornet, Jen Paulson on viola, Tim Daisy on drums, and Jason Adasiewicz on vibes! There's also some great electric bass from Nick Macri, which makes for a bolder sense of rhythm at points – almost a groove on the large leadoff cut – while the individual players trade musical moments that leave us breathless throughout! Titles include "Atlas Of Madness", "The Floor", and "Vivre Sa Vie". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited, numbered pressing of 500 copies!)

✨✧ Audio OneMidwest School ... LP
Audiographic, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A very cool project from the Chicago scene, one that features a larger-than-usual group of improvising players – all working together with the kind of spontaneous, sympathetic energy that often marks the best moments in the Windy City world of avant jazz! Most players here are leaders on their own, but come together with a fantastic sense of cohesion – in a lineup that features reeds from Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams, and Dave Rempis – plus vibes from Jason Adesiewicz, trombone from Jeb Bishop, cornet from Josh Berman, and alto from Nick Mazzarrella – working in a style that's got some structure at times, then breaks out for bolder improvisations – all with a balance that's slightly in the realm of Mike Reed's group. Titles include a great remake of the Art Ensemble's classic "Theme De Yoyo", plus takes on Anthony Braxton's "6C", and the Julius Hemphill tunes "The Hard Blues/Skin 1" and "C". ✨✧ Jane's AddictionNothing's Shocking (gold CD pressing) ... CD
Warner/Audio Fidelity, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
There really wasn't anything exactly like Jane's Addiction on a major label in their late 80s, very early 90s prime – and this first of 2 classic Warner albums from that early peak stand the test of time. Nothing's Shocking, then and now, is a strange mix of psychedelia and hard rock, weird enough to earn fans from the artier indie and college radio underbelly, and reach more mainstream hard rock fan – which really paved the way for 90s rock in ways they might not get enough credit for these days. The sound doesn't really get old, either. Includes the classic "Jane Says", plus "Idiots Rule", "Mountain Song", "Summertime Rolls", "Ted Just Admit It", and "Had A Dad". CD
(Limited edition gold CD pressing, mastered by Kevin Gray – in great shape with original die cut slipcase!)

✨✧ Eden AhbezEden's Island (2LP splatter vinyl pressing in wooden sleeve) ... LP
Del-Fi/Everland (Austria), Early 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". Great expanded package – with bonus tracks that include the unreleased "Surf Rider", plus "The Wanderer (alt)", "Tobago (45 rpm mix)", "Jam Session 78", "India (demo)", "Big Square From Nowhere", and "The Planet Song". Also includes related tracks "Sahara" by Bob Romeo, "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts, "End Of Desire" by Jack Powers, "The Shepherd" by Herb Jeffries, "Hey Jacque" by The Mt Holyoke V8s, "Monterey (alt version)" by John Harris, "Big Rock Steam Roller" by Biggie McFadden, "Green Flamingo" by Robbie Lester, and "Lonely Island" by Gene Chandler. Columbia/Audio Fidelity, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cheap Thrills, maybe – but they cut deeply and last forever! This is one of greatest albums by Big Brother & The The Holding Company – and it's also one of the most important in cementing the legacy of singer Janis Joplin. The raw manic energy of the group at their live best is somehow bottled and presented on record as perfectly as ever could be – and even better are the delicate moments that show such an incredible depth! Titles include "Turtle Blues", "Oh Sweet Mary", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Piece Of My Heart", and "I Need A Man To Love". CD

Victor Assis BrasilEsperanto (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
An incredible album of jazz tracks by one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia", which is a bonus track that wasn't on the original LP. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marker (Andrew Clinkman/Steve Marquette/Macie Stewart/Phil Sudderberg/Ken Vandermark)New Industries ... CD
Audiographic, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking projects we've heard from Ken Vandermark in years – work with a younger group with a sound that seems equally balanced between free jazz, post-punk, and no wave energy – heard here on a set of live material, and a full session recorded in the studio! The quintet features two guitarists – Andrew Clinkman and Steve Marquette, one in each channel of the recording – alongside Macie Stewart on keyboards and violin, Phil Sudderberg on drums, and Ken Vandermark on reeds – all playing together at a level that bristles with the combination of electric and acoustic energy. The studio material is as intense as the live set – and as usual with Vandermark, there's some really surprising influences going into the songs – the live set is dedicated to Elza Soares, the studio one to Robert Bresson. Titles include "Key For 23", "Alphaville #2", "Trance", "L'Argent", "Roulette", "Two Or Three", "Baal", and "Porto". CD

✨✧ Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen LoveLions Have Eaten One Of The Guards ... CD
Audiographic, 2015. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love are no musical strangers to each other – and although they've played together in various groups and lineups over the years, their musical sympathy is often best heard in a more intimate set of duets like this! Vandermark is, as always, a completely fantastic improviser on a variety of Reeds – and while Paal brings in some additional percussion next to the drum kit, it's on the drums that he's actually the most versatile – exhibiting qualities here that really mark some of the maturing modes he opened up during the second decade of the century, and providing beautiful work as a partner for Ken on this set of live recordings done at a show in Antwerp. The set features two long improvisations – "Slant" and "Odd Numbers" – and the beautiful shorter "Color On Colour". CD

✨✧ Ken VandermarkMomentum 4 –Consequent Duos 2015 to 2019 (5CD set) ... CD
Audiographic, Late 2010s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful testament to the mindblowing collaborative powers of reedman Ken Vandermark – one of the most consistently creative saxophonists of the past few decades, and a spirit with a heart that's as big as his music! Ken's a wonder by himself, but one of the things that's always really impressed us is his strong ear for others – which includes not just fellow jazz musicians, but also decades of sounds in other styles too. Here, Vandermark displays his strong sensitivity towards five key contemporaries – in a box set that features different duets on each CD! The set features one album each of improvisations with Paul Lytton on drums and percussion, Ikue Mori on laptop and electronics, Kris Davis on piano, William Parker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – and Ken is mindblowing throughout, with an incredible ear for his partners, delivered over a number of different reed instruments. Box set also features great notes from Vandermark – who's also a hell of a writer, too! CD
