Howard RileyThree Is One ... CD
Asc, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really inventive record from British avant piano legend Howard Riley – and that's saying a lot, as Riley is always pretty darn inventive! The set follows on a mode that Howard first begun during the 70s – and uses overdubbing to record him working on three different pianos as a trio – the first as if it was improvising solo, very freely; the second as a reaction to the movements of the first; and the third in the right channel as it responds to the overall picture in sound! The result is great – very rich, and very cohesive – and the album really stands every bit as strongly with some of the classics in Riley's catalog over the years. Titles include "Unbeatable", "Three Is One", "Haunted", "Heroes", "Confessing", and "Familiar Strangers". CD

Ernestine AndersonFascinating Ernestine ... LP
Mercury, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A great slice of work from the early years of Ernestine Anderson – one of her key swingers for Mercury, and the kind of record that should have made her huge at the time! There's a hip-stepping quality here that points nicely towards the 60s – a bit more of a bounce in the backings, almost a Basie-esque quality at times – thanks to arrangements from Ernie Wilkins and Gigi Gryce, both of whom bring a great ear for horn charts to the date. Anderson's inherent sense of soul really opens up strongly with both arrangers – swinging with poise one minute, but bluesy undercurrents the next – in ways that really mark the record as coming from the more jazz-based side of late 50s Mercury spectrum. Titles include "Harlem Nocturne", "A New Town Is A Blue Town", "Nobody's Heart", "I Got Rhythm", "Beale Street Blues", "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", and "I Wish I Was Back In My Baby's Arms" LP, Vinyl record album

Pascal AtanganaYe Mot Ai Kare Mot – Cameroun Partout Vol 10 (with bonus download) ... LP
Nanga Boko (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Pascal Atangana is a hell of a singer – one who can move quickly, but with lots of deft changes – over the very dynamic rhythms provided by his excellent backing group! The set was originally issued as a part of a series to showcase the music of Cameroon in the 70s – but it's got a unique quality that's very much its own – often delivered with a very propulsive blend of percussion and fast-moving guitars – rhythms that cascade forward without ever missing a beat, while Pascal does an amazing job of keeping up the pace, and bringing lots of personal inflections to the sound as well. Titles include "Ye Mot Ai Kare Mot", "Amayang Wom", "Aluk Adang Ayia", "Za Ayana Ma", "Oyene Nyolo Ane Nyobok", and "Komedeng". LP, Vinyl record album

Saravah (France), 1972/2000. Used ... $12.99
A very cool compilation of tracks, seemingly recorded in the early 70s – but issued here in package designed to pay tribute to the 33-year history of the legendary Saravah label! Pierre Barouh, the founder of Saravah, is at the head of the party-like festivities, reciting his "Saravah Blues En 72". Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos performs quite a bit on a number of tracks, and other tracks feature performances by the group Mahjun and Jean-Roger Caussimon. The highlight is a lovely group vocal reading of Chico Buarque's "La Nuit Des Masques", with new French lyrics by Barouh, and nice percussion by Nana! A wonderful document of the free spirits and cross-cultural pollenation behind this groundbreaking label! CD

We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

Zennez (Netherlands), 2011. Used ... $11.99
Funky soul, but with a touch of jazz – almost a mod soul undercurrent that really sets these guys apart from the rest! The blend is great – nice and tight, yet never too slick – almost the sort of direction Georgie Fame should have gone in the early 70s, had he stayed on the right track – with lots of lead vocals from songwriter Frank Montis, who's got this raspy sound that's perfect for his hip lyrics! Frank also plays Fender Rhodes and Hammond as well – amidst some great horns, and backing vocals from Laura Vane on a number of cuts too. Tracks include "Make It Right", "Fading", "Right From Wrong", "Facade", "Life Is Short", "We'll Meet Again", "Sunny", "Straightforward Fascination", and "Live My Life". CD

Prestige, 1944/1946/1959. Used ... $4.99
A great assortment of material from Coleman Hawkins – sides that nicely span the mid 40s and late 50s, showing some great growth in his technique! The first four tracks are from a record by the Walter Foots All Stars – a group led by Foots on tenor, but also featuring Hawk – also with Hilton Jefferson on alto and Jonah Jones on trumpet – on tracks that include "Out To Lunch", "Every Man For Himself", and "Look Out Jack". Next are four more tracks recorded in 1944 with backing by a quartet that includes Thelonious Monk – on titles that include "On The Bean", "Recollections", and "Flyin Hawk". A set with a more boppish lineup follows – with JJ Johnson on trombone and Fats Navarro on trumpet – on titles that include "Bean & The Boys", "Cocktails For Two", and "You Go To My Head". Last are some later sides from 1959 – the great album Stasch, played by a very hip group – with Jerome Richardson on flute and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Roy Gaines on guitar, and Ray Bryant on piano. Jerry Valentine did the arrangements – and cuts include "Stasch", "Trust In me", "Roll Em", "Skyrouk", and "My Babe". CD

Lupe FiascoFood & Liquor ... CD
Atlantic, 2006. Used ... $4.99
The official full length debut from Lupe Fiasco – another wholly unique Chicago MC who's gotten the runaround from seemingly every major label in the biz – and a record that lives up to the long-building hype! Frankly, we were scared almost immediately when we heard the description "skate rap" applied to "Kick, Push" – only to find our fears unfounded. Lupe's only going to be himself – which is what makes him such a strong MC (other than the masterful breath control) – and that individualistic approach is proving to be Chicago's gift to mainstream hip hip. The Neptunes provide one of their best productions of the past couple years for "I Gotcha" – but the soundtracky productions by Soundtrakk (natch) are even better. Other tracks include "Real" feat Sara Green, "Just Might Be OK" feat Gemini, "Kick, Push", "The Instrumental" feat Jonah Matranga, "He Say She Say" feat Gemini & Sarah Green, "Sunshine", "Daydreamin'" feat Jill Scott, "The Cool" (produced by Kanye), "Hurt Me Soul", "Pressure" feat Jay-Z, "American Terrorist" feat Matthew Santos, "The Cool", "The Emperor's Soundtrack" and more! Minstrel/Roundtable (Australia), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 31.98
Some of the moodiest, most unusual music we've ever heard from Mario Nascimbene – an artist who's maybe best known for working in the more romantic side of the spectrum, but who here is using a "mixerama" keyboard – which works a bit like the mellotron to sample elements, then put them into a specific scale! The tunes are often stark and spare, and build slowly in these waves of sonic energy – almost with a quality that feels more like the industrial underground of Zoviet France or Hafler Trio than anything we might have expected from Nascimbene, especially in the 60s. The album features a selection of songs used in short documentary films directed by Roberto Rossellini – and titles include "Angoscia", "Totalia Viole-Celli", "Attesa Antica", "Situazione Orientale", "Riberbo Di Tam Tam", "Percussione Di Timpani", "Tragedia Greca", and "Lunare". Fabiano Do Nascimento has a way of mixing acoustic guitar with really compelling arrangements – never too large to drown out his lead, but with complex rhythmic changes and all the right sort of energy that makes the whole thing way more than just another album of acoustic guitar – almost as if you had Baden Powell working with charts from Hermeto Pascoal, to give the whole thing a sense of flow that has the guitar pulling the percussion, the percussion pulling the guitar, and all these great colors and tones letting loose in the process. EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $54.99
A landmark album from Milton Nascimento – not only a set that really marked his growth as a singer, songwriter, and overall musical visionary – but also a record that really showcased the collaborative spirit that would be a part of his music for years to come! The album features Milton with his "corner club" – an elite group of musicians and songwriters from the early days of his career – including greats like Lo Borges and Wagner Tiso – who'd already contributed to his music, but really get a chance to stand in the spotlight here. Borges is particularly fantastic, and shines on the massively beautiful cut "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", which begins the album – and which is still one of the best Nascimento cuts all these many years later! The sound of the record is impossible to describe adequately – but it's got a fantastically soulful vibe, soaring and joyous, and really expanded through the participation of the other rich talents. The vocals are mixed perfectly, and the songwriting's brilliant all the way through – and titles include "San Vincete", "Lila", "Paisagem Da Janela", "Cravo E Canela", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Os Povos", "Nada Sera Como Antes", "Um Gosto De Sol", and "O Trem Azul". Hermeto PascoalE Sua Visao Original Do Forro ... CD
Scubidu (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A very original vision of Brazilian forro – served up here by the mighty musical talents of Hermeto Pascoal, still making very fresh sounds this late in his career! As with some of Hermeto's other recent records, the leader is accompanied by some great younger musicians who are able to deftly move through all his sharp changes and bright explosions of color – and Pascoal is surprisingly deft on the sanfonas – a Brazilian version of the accordion that works well alongside the other reeds in the lineup, and the heavy mix of percussion that really drives the tunes! The whole thing is maybe less arch-modern than some of Hermeto's more experimental albums – and most of the music is instrumental, but the set does feature guest vocals from Rosa Maria, Mraina Elai, Joao Claudio Moreno, and Alceu Valenca. Titles include "Forro Pela Manha", "O Ovo", "A Ova", "Adelzon Alves No Forro", "Isto E Brasil", "Forro Na Toca", "Pernambuco Falando Para O Mundo", "Sivucando No Frevo", and "Pantanal Brasileiro". Easily one of the greatest albums ever by Hermeto Pascoal – a masterpiece of free-thinking jazz that combines all of the best elements of his work! At one level, there's an experimental approach to instrumentation that really grabs the ears – but it's also wrapped around a key sense of groove that holds everything together nicely, and which fuses the elements with a cosmically soaring approach that never lets up for the length of the entire set! Flora Purim, Airto, and Raul De Souza all guest star – and the album's got a really universal appeal that bridges US, Brazilian, and European jazz scenes of the 70s! RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". Atco, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A bold step forward for the Rascals – and a record that really has them taking some great chances with their music! There's a definite psychedelic influence in the mix, but the sound is also more ambitious too – not just a scattering of elements borrowed from their contemporaries, but a real effort to find a new place for their music – with some wonderful results! The great Arif Mardin is firmly teamed with the group here on arrangements – filling in the rough ideas of the tunes with some near-perfect backings – and the vocals themselves have a quality that's much more deeply personal than before – moving past the simple soul themes of earlier years. Titles include "Silly Girl", "My World", "Easy Rollin", "Please Love Me", "My Hawaii", "I'm Gonna Love You", "Singin The Blues Too Long", and "Sattva". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/BGO (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of records that really show the evolution of The Rascals – back to back in a single set! See is harder rocking and almost deeper soul than before for the group – and a tremendous evolution in the music of The Rascals – light years past the pop hits of a few years before! The group co-produced the album with Arif Mardin, and the sounds here are even more sophisticated than their Once Upon A Dream album – in modes that are sometimes rootsy rock, sometimes looser jamming, all woven together with the complexity of some of the hipper groups recording for Columbia Records at the time. The vocals are even more confident than before – as are some of the tunes in the set – and titles include "See", "I'd Like To Take You Home", "Remember Me", "Real Thing", "Away Away", "Carry Me Back", "Nubia", and "Temptation's Bout To Get Me". Search & Nothingness is the Rascals' last album for Atlantic Records – and a set that has the combo relying more than ever on the talents of organist Felix Cavaliere! There's a great New York blend of rock and soul going on in the set – a confident, soaring sort of approach to the tunes that's past caring what any simple genre conventions might mean, or which tracks might end up on radio – even though most of the tunes here are still plenty darn catchy. The piano and organ lines on the album snap along nicely, as do some of the drums (especially on the break cut "You Don't Know") – and although group member Eddie Brigati had left by the time the album was released, he still sings lead on a few tracks. Titles include the jazzy "Nama", which is a wonderful surprise – plus "You Don't Know", "Right On", "Ready For Love", "Fortunes", "Glory Glory", and "The Letter". CD

Tony SchwartzMusic In The Streets – A Fascinating Collection Of Music & Musicians Recorded On The Streets On New York City ... CD
Folkways, 1957. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A vivid audio document of New York City in the late 50s – put together by creative sound recorder Tony Schwartz! The set's one of a few amazing albums put together by Schwartz – who spent a lot of time on the streets with his microphones and recorder, then really got creative putting the whole thing together in the studio – so that there's some good structure, and almost a sense of narrative to the record – yet in a way that also preserves all of the vivid, spontaneous aspects of the "on the street" recordings. Schwartz narrates a bit, includes some interviews, background sounds from certain areas of the city, and a range of performances in styles that run from jazz to folk to gospel and beyond! CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99 31.98
A beautiful underwater fantasy of sound library grooves – a set that's almost the Italian equivalent to the Inner Space soundtrack from Australia by Sven Libaek! Like that set, this one uses waves of instrumental energy to create an almost watery vibe – strings mixed with keyboards, often underlain by electric bass – all at a level that's occasionally funky, always dreamy, and plenty darn cool throughout! The style continues some of the Italian soundtrack modes of a few years before, but with more fluttering elements that emphasize the "sea" in the title – on tracks that include "Underwater Fantasy", "Tempest Force 8", "High Tide", "Surging Surf", "Calm Sea", and "In The Ocean Depths". Armando SciasciaViolin Reactions (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Vedette/Roundtable (Australia), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99 26.98
The definitely got the title right on this one – as the album's got plenty of violin, but never in the way you might expect – as the instrument is used in all these weird and wonderful ways that really make the record a treat! There's neither classical nor jazz-based violin approaches at play – and instead, Armando Sciascia almost seems to be trying to find all the weird, offbeat sounds he can from the instrument – but in ways that are sometimes funky, sometimes dark, and always pretty darn compelling! Some tracks have these chugging rhythms that come from percussion by Tullio De Piscopo – best known for his later club work – others have a spare, moody vibe with offbeat string passages echoing in space – almost as if they're electronic, with weirdly spacey qualities. The record is quite experimental for a sound library session – and titles include "Reagente B", "Acidocloroscuccinico", "Atomo Asimmetrico", "Nucleofilo", "Planctonico", "Enantiomorfo", and "Substrato Ax". Atlantic, 1967. Very Good- ... $9.99
Possibly the biggest album ever by The Rascals – a wonderfully tight batch of tunes that has the group hitting perfectly on all their best fronts! Blue eyed soul mixes wonderfully with some rougher garage-styled rock – and the execution here is perfect enough to please listeners on both sides of the fence. Perhaps most noteworthy is the presence of Arif Mardin arrangements on some of the album's key tracks – a factor that really helps the group find their groove, and sparkle even more brilliantly than before. Titles include "Groovin", "If You Knew", "A Girl Like You", "Find Somebody", "I'm So Happy Now", "Sueno", "How Can I Be Sure", and "It's Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. ✨✧ Aleuda featuring Hermeto PascoalOferenda ... CD
Carmo/Far Out (UK), Mid 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album – one that takes us back to the early 70s sound of Hermeto, Airto, and Flora Purim! Hermeto Pascoal arrranged and produced the record, and it's based around the jazzy vocals of Brazilian singer Aleuda, who reminds us a bit of Flora in her early days, but with a tone that's a bit higher and sharper. The backing is performed by a crack group of Brazilian jazz and fusion players that includes Mauro Senise, Zeca Assumpcao, Robertinho Silva, and Hermeto himself – and the album feels like a rare lost session that might have been cut for Milestone during the heyday of the West Coast Latin scene of the mid 70s. Titles include "Ceara", "Oferenda", "Galope", "Jurema", "Passarinho", "Rede", and "Fofoca". CD

Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges". One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a groundbreaking soundtrack that forever changed the way that jazz music was used in film! According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". One of the more obscure entries in the Django series of Italian spaghetti western films of the 60s – but one that's got a really wonderful soundtrack, penned by one of the more obscure artists to provide music for the Italian scene too! Vasco Vassil Kojucharov really echoes some of the coolest styles of his contemporaries here – from driving themes, to nicely moody numbers that might have a piano line echoing in space, or a spare fuzzy guitar bit making a bold statement before a moment of action! And as with others of this nature, there's also a few sweeter moments – that really great balanced of moods and timing that Morricone hit with Once Upon A Time In The West – maybe copied a bit here by Vasco, but in a really great way. 26 tracks in all! Now Again, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful second album from Fabiano Do Nascimento – and a set that really blows away his debut! This record's got an "instant classic" vibe right from the start – the kind of set that you could easily listen next to 70s gems by artists like Lo Borges, Milton Nascimento, or Edu Lobo – with a sound that hangs between the complexity and soul of all three of those artists – but a presentation that's also very personal and unique! Fabiano plays acoustic guitar throughout, with a cascading vibe that's incredibly compelling – and often offset by light flute and percussion, which skitter alongside his beautiful vocals – in ways that are always upbeat, but never too polished – really preserving this organic core in his music! The sound is sublime – sophisticated, but very organic – and if you know us at all, we're not ones to throw around the term "classic" lightly when it comes to Brazilian music. Titles include "Planalto", "Baiao", "Brasilerinho", "Ja Que Tu", "Oye Nana", "O Tempo", "Canto De Xango", and "Louva A Deus Mantis". CD

A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia". Killer stuff by Milton Nascimento – and his first recorded session ever! The record's incredible, and is every bit as great as his more famous records from 1969 and 1970. The style is similar – with Milton's soulful voice ringing out among large baroque arrangements, filled with warmth, imagination, and small touches of jazz. The record includes early versions of classics like "Gira, Girou", "Tres Pontas", "Outubro", and "Travessia". Plus, there's a version of "Catavento" that's worth the price of the album alone! Three groundbreaking albums from this ethereal ECM ensemble – a very hip trio that features Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, and Collin Wolcott – all coming together in a beautiful blend of jazz, world music, and a touch of ECM atmospherics! The instrumentation is quite compelling with Cherry on trumpet, flutes, organ, and doussn'gouni; Vasconcelos on berimbau, cuica, talking drum, and percussion; and Wolcott on sitar, tabla, dulcimer, and percussion – all instruments that are used sparely, often away from their original cultural context, in ways that unlock new sounds and new meanings in the hands of the trio! The record is quite open and airy at points – really resonating in that sweet ECM style of production, which almost seems to build a new sense of majesty out of the simplest acoustic elements. 3CD set features each individual album, plus new notes – and titles include "Like That Of Sky", "Codona", "Mumakata", "Drip Dry", "Walking On Eggs", "Goshakabuchi", "Clicky Clacky", "Trayra Boia", "Lullaby", "Travel By Night", and "Inner Organs". Now Again, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one that's got an amazingly timeless feel – like the best early 70s material from Brazilian artists like Airto, Hermeto Pascoal, or Egberto Gismonti! The music of Fabiano Do Nascimento has a similar genre-breaking quality to these giants – not straight jazz, but very jazzy in parts – not traditional Brazilian roots, either – but very schooled in the strongest elements from decades of creativity on that scene – all wrapped up in this fresh, new blend that's completely mesmerizing right from the start! Most instrumentation is acoustic, and relatively simple – guitar, percussion, drums, and vocals – but the arrangements are wonderful, and fold these familiar elements together in ways that are completely unique. The legendary Airto guests on the record – but the vision here is clearly that of Fabiano Do Nascimento – as he mixes together works by Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell, and other Brazilian composers with some bold new ideas of his own. Titles include "Forro Brasil", "Minha Ciranda", "Etude", "Primeira Estrella", "Tupi", "Se Ela Preguntar", "Tocatta Em Ritmo De Samba", and "Nana". CD

Quartet (Spain), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure 70s soundtracks from the great Piero Piccioni – and one of the grooviest too – a set that has the maestro playing lots of lead piano and organ lines himself, in a way that recalls the dreaminess of some of his better-known scores from the 60s! The film's an obscure one too – directed in Spain, which is a change from some of Piero's more familiar Italian soundtrack settings – but the style is right in keeping with everything we love in his music. The set basically has two song variations – the first is the funky "Right Or Wrong", done in two versions with vocals by Shawn Robinson, but also a long, lively instrumental part too. The second is "Dopio Di Che Uccide Il Maschio E Lo Divora" – a theme that's taken in ways that move slowly, from darkness to dreamy light – slow-stepping piano or organ amidst some moodier strings. EMI (Brazil), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff – and one of Milton Nascimento's greatest albums of the 70s! The style here is a bit more subdued than on some of his later work – but in a way that's really majestic and soulful, showing the further development of Milton's unique idiom as he becomes one of the cornerstones of 70s MPB. There's a sense of power here that's very subtle, but which is pure Nascimento all the way – a maturing approach to both songwriting and singing that are light years from the music of Brazil a decade before. Filled with great material – and includes the tracks "Caldera" and "Circo Marimbondo", both of which have a nice swinging groove, plus "Viver De Amor", "Carro De Boi", "Fazenda", "Volver A Los 17", and "Minas Geraes". CD also features the bonus cuts "Primerio De Maio" and "O Cio Da Terra", which (we think) were only available before as singles! CD

Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Richly soulful work from Milton Nascimento – music created at the same time as his classic albums in the 70s – but as the soundtrack to a ballet, which makes for a nice change from the usual! The approach is similar to Milton's studio work, but maybe even a bit more heavenly too – a sophisticated, yet soulful blend of instrumentation and vocals – baroque yet touched with the straightforwardness of rock, and never overly complicated, despite the nature of the setting. The work is essential if you like any of Milton's mid 70s studio albums – and performers on the project include both Joao Donato and Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Nelson Angelo and Beto Guedes on guitar, Paulo Moura on saxes, and Helcio Milito on percussion – true Brazilian instrumental heavyweights, who more than keep up with the complexity and charm of the music. Nascimento is also in the lineup, and adds some of his vocals too – on titles that include "Maria Maria", "Lilia", "A Chamada", "Pai Grande", "Seducao", "Francisco", "Boca A Boca", "De Repente Maria Sumiu", and "Francisco". A totally cool collection of unusual cumbia cuts from 70s Peru – music that definitely earns the psychedelic tag promised in the title, given its heavy use of electric guitars and trippy production! The style here is different than more familiar cumbia from Colombia – rooted in the rhythmic approach, but taken to really new territory by the artists on the set – some of whom were likely garage and psych combos, able to turn their style towards the new groove of the time! Many of the tracks are instrumentals – which furthers their unusual feel, as the vibe is almost like some unusual Latin take on surf music – and titles include "La Negrita" by Los Blancaguay, "Bongocero" by Los Telstars, "Sueno Magico" by The Black Cats, "Soul Finger" by Los Escaramujos, "Marihuana" by Los Darlings De Huanuco, "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus" by Santanita, "Cuarto Oscuro" by Los Zheros, and "Las Oleadas" by Ranil Y Su Conjunto. Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. One of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! Rare Bacharach galore – an assortment of under-reissued tracks all penned by the mighty Burt – most of which are from the heyday of 60s uptown soul! Despite the 1952 in the date range on the title, almost all the tunes here are from the mid 60s – that time when Bacharach was writing new tunes like a demon, and getting most of them recorded by a range of great talents on the New York scene. Singers are a good mix of soul, pop, rock, and vocal artists – and although the material was done for a variety of different labels, there's a relatively unified feel – thanks to that snapping syncopation that Burt always brought to work like this. CD features 26 titles in all – including "How About" by Della Reese, "Third Window From The Right" by Dean Barlow, "I Wake Up Crying" by Del Shannon, "I Looked For You" by Charlie Gracie, "That's Not The Answer" by Vi Velasco, "More Time To Be With You" by Brook Benton, "Three Friends" by The Turbans, "Move It On The Backbeat" by Burt & The Backbeats, "You're Telling Our Secrets" by Dee Clark, "Thirty Miles Of Railroad Track" by The Hammond Brothers, "The Story Of My Life" by Big Al Downing, "Made In Paris" by Trini Lopez, "Rain From The Skies" by Adam Wade, and "True Love Never Runs Smooth" by Don & Juan. ✨✧ Basso Valdambrini Octet with Lars GullinNew Sound From Italy ... LP
Jolly/BTF (Italy), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A definite new sound from Italy – served up by one of the hippest groups on the scene at the time! The combo of trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini and tenorist Gianni Basso was easily one of the best of their generation – and here, they're working in a slightly expanded octet mode that features guest work from Swedish baritone sax giant Lars Gullin! The album's great proof of Gullin's ability to slide into any sort of a setting – and his baritone provides a great bottom to the already-dextrous horn interplay between Basso and Valdambrini. Gullin arranged about half the numbers in the set – the rest were scored by George Gruntz or Piero Umiliani – and titles include "Blues For Gassman", "Indiana", "Fascinating Rhythm", "There Will Never Be Another You", "How About You", and "Peter Of April". Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... LP
Rozenblit/Audio Clarity (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Big StarRadio City (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ardent/Fantasy, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
A record that may have never hit the radio city it wished for in the title – but a classic that's gone onto have an undeniable influence on so many scenes and styles over the years! This sublime second set from Big Star is even leaner and more focused than the first – a record that has the group losing Chris Bell, yet still retaining a lot of his influence – while the main focus moves over to Alex Chilton, whose ability to sing and write is simply mindblowing! The tunes have these dark, melancholy moments that are unlike anything either Chilton or rock had given the world up to the time – and really almost feel much more like work from a decade later in terms of execution and production. There's no easy labels, no easy terms you could ever hope to ascribe to the record – and that's fine, because it stands majestically well on its own. Titles include "O My Soul", "Life Is White", "Way Out West", "You Get What You Deserve", "Mod Lang", "She's A Mover", "Morpha Girl", "I'm In Love With A Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruben BladesMaestra Vida Vol 1 – Primera Parte ... CD
Fania, 1979. Used ... $14.99
An amazing achievement for Ruben Blades – a full suite of tracks conceived and composed by Ruben as a "disco drama" on wax! The work isn't the disco-styled album you might think from this description – and is more of a mini-opera or concept album by Blades, one that features ambitious arrangements from Louie Cruz, Marty Sheller, and Carlos Franzetti – using strings and more standard Latin backings to expand the tunes tremendously, and make the whole album work with the full drama it requires. There's a few spoken bits on the set, which give way to some great songs – and the album also has a few instrumental passages. Willie Colon produced and supervised the whole effort – and tracks on the first part include "Prologo", "Manuela", "Carmelo (part 1)", "Dejenme Reir", and "El Nascimento De Ramiro". CD

Body 11Youth ... LP
Medical, Mid 80s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A one-man German operation from the mid-80s – but one with a punchy approach that rivals some of the better electro pop from the Euro scene at the time! Body 11 only ever issued a 7" EP back in the day, plus a handful of cuts on cassette – but the sound here really recalls those great early 80s moments when older, colder groups like Cabaret Voltaire or Human League found a way to get more tuneful – yet still hold onto most of the edge that made them so great. Had Body 11 issued these cuts in early 80s Sheffield or Manchester, he might well have broken big – but it's also the mystery of these obscure tracks that keeps the record really interesting too. Instrumentation includes lots of Yamaha, Korg, and Roland electronics – and titles include "Wasteland 2", "Under My Command", "Just A Smile", "Marching", "Hearts", and "Fascination". (Milky clear vinyl, including the insert.)
