Arthur RussellInstrumentals ... LP
Audika, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
An incredible chapter in the Arthur Russell story – and one that's not nearly as well-known as his club singles and art rock work of the 80s! The 2LP package presents some long-lost longer form work by Russell – instrumental pieces composed and recorded in the 70s and early 80s, most of which have a decidedly minimalist feel! In addition to being a dancefloor artist in the post-disco years, Russell was also music director of The Kitchen, and had ties to the more experimental side of the New York scene – and worked in a world that included Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Rhys Chatham, and many others from time. There's echoes of all 3 in this wonderful instrumental material, recalling the brighter, more optimistic years of modern music – the almost DIY style that hit composition and performance in the stretch after early minimalism, conveyed beautifully on these recordings done for smaller ensembles, often in a mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation. The package features full notes on the music, and titles that include "Instrumentals Vol 1", "Instrumentals Vol 2", "Reach One – With Two Fender Rhodes (1973)" and "Sketch For The Face Of Helen". (Includes a nice insert booklet notes and photos.)

Audika, 1970s. New Copy ... $13.99
A completely different side of Arthur Russell than you might have heard before – and that's really saying a lot, given how many sides Russell has already given us! In his too-short life, Arthur managed to crack both the worlds of New York club and avant garde – but here, Russell performs a host of earlier material that's much more in a singer/songwriter mode – really great tracks recorded early in his New York years, and in the years before – and music that would definitely have gained Arthur a whole other legion of followers, were it released at the time! The tracks are mostly demo or home recordings, but the quality is great, and the instrumentation fuller than just a singer and guitar – but in ways that still preserve the open, honest quality of the music – and really illuminates these beautiful little songs by Russell, with lyrical elements that are completely charming. Most tracks feature additional musicians – a surprising lineup of help that includes Rhys Chatham, The Paley Brothers, David Van Tieghem, Ernie Brooks, and Henry Flynt – a mix of musicians that's really surprising, and adds a lot to these tracks too. Wonderful throughout – and a huge new discovery, even at a point when we thought we'd already discovered all the corners of Arthur Russell's career. Titles include "The Dogs Outside Are Barking", "I Still Love You", "Barefoot In New York", "Wonder Boy", "Everybody Everybody", "I Never Get Lonesome", "Words Of Love", "I Felt", "Iowa Dream", "I Kissed The Girl From Outer Space", "In Love With You For The Last Time", and "List Of Boys". Audika, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $10.99
A great discovery in the lost catalog of Arthur Russell – material from the same mid 80s stretch as his excellent World Of Echo album, and done with a very similar sound! Most of the instrumentation here is spare drum programs, keyboards, and processed cello – all handled by Russell, who also vocalizes slightly, often in a processed way as well – so that there's a particularly electric feel to the tunes, which goes along with the skittishly funky rhythms! Most tracks here are in an upbeat mode – partly post-disco dancefloor funk, but also a bit more experimental at times – and in a way, this record may be the strongest one to link together the two sides of Russell's career in both the galleries and the clubs. Titles include "Springfield", "See My Brother He's Jumping Out (Let's Go Swimming #1)", "Corn #3", "Hiding Your Present From You", "You Have Did The Right Thing When You Put That Skylight In", and "Springfield (DFA rmx)". Arthur RussellWorld Of Echo ... LP
Audika, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99
An incredibly beautiful set of work from Arthur Russell – one of the few records to be issued under his own name during his tragically short life – and a hauntingly spare blend of vocals, hand percussion, and solo cello – recorded with more than enough echo to live up to the title! The style is incredibly hard to peg – at times delivered with an almost Nick Drake-like approach that's extremely personal, but also sharing some styles with the mellower work of Suicide and other New York art rock groups from Russell's generation. Russell's voice billows out in a field of echo, directed almost imperceptibly by resonant notes on an electrified cello, and bumped along by muted rhythms that have almost no "attack" but lots of delay. One thing is extremely clear: that the album, which virtually died upon release back in the 80s, was years ahead of its time – and has a quality that easily ranks it as one of the most inventive recordings of its decade. The whole thing's as surprisingly appealing as it is experimental, and this extra-deluxe package features a number of additional tracks. Titles include "Wax The Van", "Tone Bone Kone", "Answers Me", "Being It", "She's The Star/I Take This Time", "Tree House", "See Through", "Lucky Cloud", "Happy Ending", "Tower Of Meaning/Rabbit's Ear/Home Away From Home", and "Our Last Night Together". ✨✧ Arthur RussellWorld Of Arthur Russell (3LP set) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! ✨✧ Arthur RussellCalling Out Of Context ... LP
Audika, Mid 80s-Early 90s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great collection of unreleased recordings by the great, largely unheralded Arthur Russell – one of the key players in the late 70s/early 80s NY underground – whose influence can be found everywhere from the smoky disco of the Paradise Garage scene to the dubby, arrhythmic, and percussive pounding of the post punk era! If you know anything about Russell, you know he hated to be nailed down. He's a classically trained cellist, who made his name producing now legendary disco numbers for Loose Joints and others. He went into the 80s exploring the kind of harder charging, minimalist grooving vibe that was kicked into effect by the unholy union of punk and dance music, but unlike some of the others Arthur still carried the soulful musicality of the 70s. The 12 tracks here are culled from sessions cut between 1985 and 1990 when Russell was signed to Rough Trade – and have gone completely unreleased until now! Most feature Russell on almost unrecognizable ambient cello, hypnotic vocals, and some of the coolest 80s drum programming you'll ever hear – with lots of cool synth notes and effects overdubbed, often with Peter Zummo on trombone and Mustafa Ahmed on percussion. It's really hypnotic, fairly raw, quite left of center but still very groovy stuff! If you appreciate the Ze Records scene, and all of those the great reissues of the NY post punk and disco years, this is totally essential! Tracks include "In The Deer Forest Part 1", "The Platform On The Ocean", "You And Me Both", "Calling Out Of Context", "Arm Around You", "Wild Combination", "Get Around To It" and more. ✨✧ Arthur RussellLove Is Overtaking Me ... LP
Audika, Mid 70s-Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful set of unreleased Arthur Russell songs – great tunes that he cut in more of an eclectic singer-songwriter approach than some of his other work – emotionally upfront, understated material that is simply beautiful! The songs range from very stripped down and folksy on the earlier recordings – kind of like an East Village Townes Van Zandt (we s**t you not) with Arthur singing and playing acoustic guitar and occasionally his cello – with an intuitive, true understanding of folk and Americana at its most honest and direct, while still working in some avant flourishes. As the set and the years of recording progress, the accompaniment gets busier and more pop, soul and experimental sounds are filtered in – but the song-based approach carries all the way through. For a noted perfectionist and experimentalist, it's a really unfussy batch of material, and very rewarding. Highly recommended! Tracks include "Close My Eyes", "Goodbye Old Paint", "Maybe She", "Oh Fernanda Why", "Eli", "Habit Of You", "Janine", "Big Moon", "The Letter", "Your Motion Says", "Love Is Overtaking Me", "Planted A Thought", "Love Comes Back" and more. Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... LP
Dark Entries, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". LP, Vinyl record album
