Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music ... CD
Sleeping Bag, 1981. Used ... $7.99
An incredible full album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! The group's a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! CD

Arthur RussellSpringfield ... CD
Audika, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $10.99
A great discovery in the lost catalog of Arthur Russell – material from the same mid 80s stretch as his excellent World Of Echo album, and done with a very similar sound! Most of the instrumentation here is spare drum programs, keyboards, and processed cello – all handled by Russell, who also vocalizes slightly, often in a processed way as well – so that there's a particularly electric feel to the tunes, which goes along with the skittishly funky rhythms! Most tracks here are in an upbeat mode – partly post-disco dancefloor funk, but also a bit more experimental at times – and in a way, this record may be the strongest one to link together the two sides of Russell's career in both the galleries and the clubs. Titles include "Springfield", "See My Brother He's Jumping Out (Let's Go Swimming #1)", "Corn #3", "Hiding Your Present From You", "You Have Did The Right Thing When You Put That Skylight In", and "Springfield (DFA rmx)". ✨✧ Arthur RussellIowa Dream ... CD
Audika, 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A completely different side of Arthur Russell than you might have heard before – and that's really saying a lot, given how many sides Russell has already given us! In his too-short life, Arthur managed to crack both the worlds of New York club and avant garde – but here, Russell performs a host of earlier material that's much more in a singer/songwriter mode – really great tracks recorded early in his New York years, and in the years before – and music that would definitely have gained Arthur a whole other legion of followers, were it released at the time! The tracks are mostly demo or home recordings, but the quality is great, and the instrumentation fuller than just a singer and guitar – but in ways that still preserve the open, honest quality of the music – and really illuminates these beautiful little songs by Russell, with lyrical elements that are completely charming. Most tracks feature additional musicians – a surprising lineup of help that includes Rhys Chatham, The Paley Brothers, David Van Tieghem, Ernie Brooks, and Henry Flynt – a mix of musicians that's really surprising, and adds a lot to these tracks too. Wonderful throughout – and a huge new discovery, even at a point when we thought we'd already discovered all the corners of Arthur Russell's career. Titles include "The Dogs Outside Are Barking", "I Still Love You", "Barefoot In New York", "Wonder Boy", "Everybody Everybody", "I Never Get Lonesome", "Words Of Love", "I Felt", "Iowa Dream", "I Kissed The Girl From Outer Space", "In Love With You For The Last Time", and "List Of Boys". ✨✧ Arthur RussellWorld Of Arthur Russell (3LP set) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! Brian BriggsSelected Music From The Album Brain Damage ... 12-inch
Bearsville, 1980. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $9.99
A great lost record of minimalist club – a set that we'd rank right up there with classics by Arthur Russell, Liquid Liquid, or some of the other most creative talents on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! As with work by those other two artists, there's an experimental approach here, but one that's very very groovy – mostly just spare beats, loose instrumentation, and other sounds – woven together in ways that certainly have strong post-punk inspiration, but which can also work perfectly on a dancefloor too! This is the kind of work that would be equally at home in the clubs and in a punk club too – the crossover you'd experience at the legendary Danceteria – and titles include "AEO (parts 1 & 2)", "Psyclone", "Nervous Breakdown", and "Spy Vs Spy". 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... LP
Dark Entries, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". LP, Vinyl record album
