Benny Bailey, ArneDomnerus, Ake Persson, & Others —
Swedish Punch ... LP Metronome (Sweden), 1959. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
One of those Metronome classics from a time when the Swedish jazz scene was really catching fire! The set features a full complement of work from the great American trumpeter Benny Bailey – who was making big waves on the Scandia scene at the time – plus work from Ake Persson on trombone, Bjarne Nerem on tenor, Rune Ofwerman on piano, Lennart Jansson on baritone, Rune Gustafsson on guitar, ArneDomnerus on on alto, and Torbjorn Hultrantz on bass. Arrangements are by Melba Liston on many tracks too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Vintage pressing, in a flipback cover! Back cover has a small sticker and a small rip, and front has a stereo sticker.)
Hard swinging big band material from Sweden – featuring the big band of Harry Arnold arranged by Quincy Jones. Quincy had been spending a lot of time in Sweden during the mid 50s – bringing with him a host of great players that would soon become big names on the European scene. Biggest of these is Benny Bailey, who plays some good solos here with a mostly-Swedish group that includes ArneDomnerus, Bengt Hallberb, Ake Persson, and Bengt-Arne Wallin. The style of the work, and its trans-Atlantic jazz orientation, is a direct precursor of later work by the Clarke-Boland Big Band – of whom Bailey was a big part. Titles all swing nicely, and tracks include "Doodlin", "Room 608", "Quincy's Home Again", "Brief Encounter", and "Meet Benny Bailey". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear and rounded corners.)
An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes ArneDomnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". CD
Different work than usual for Herbie – a series of sides recorded in Sweden in the late 50s, featuring Herbie on both flute and tenor! The feel here is at once more poised and more open than some of Herbie's US sides from the time – as the groups shift from track to track, and Herbie's movement between tenor and flute gives the album a nicely rough edge. Players include Ake Persson, Rolf Blomqvist, ArneDomnerus, and Beng Arne Wallin – and titles include "Cherry Point", "Serenata", "Hurry Burry", "Adam's Theme", "Ow", and "Nature Boy". 1969 pressing of an album originally titled Mann In The Morning. LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue label pressing. Vinyl plays with a click on the last 2 songs of side A. Cover has a half split bottom seam, top seam wear, some surface wear, name in pen, tiny cutout hole.)
A great all-star international group – with ArneDomnerus and Herb Geller on alto, Hans Koller on tenor, Ronnie Ross on baritone, Bengt Arne Wallin and Rob Pronk on trumpet, Toots Thielemans on guitar and harmonica, Freidrich Gulda on piano, and Rolf Ericson on trumpet. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some surface wear, yellowing from age, slightly wavy panels, center split in the top seam held with clear tape, Columbia Stereo sticker at the spine, and some stains at the bottom edge. Labels have Odeon stickers.)

Lars Gullin —
Baritone Sax ... CD Atlantic (UK), 1956. Used ...
Out Of Stock
An amazing American release from this legendary baritone saxophonist – one of a few Swedish sessions that Lars issued here in the US at the time! The album's a perfect introduction to Gullin's groundbreaking work – that blend of soul, swing, and modernism that easily made him one of the best talents on his instrument in the postwar years – an overseas player to rival gians like Pepper Adams or Serge Chaloff here in the US! The work is some of Lars' best from the decade – and the tracks feature his modernist baritone in different groupings with top Swedish jazzmen of the time – including Rune Ofwerman on piano, ArneDomnerus on alto, Rolf Blomquist on tenor, Ake Persson on trombone, and George Riedel on bass. The tracks are all longish (most are over 5 minutes), with a strong swing, and introspective solos by Gulling that are some of his strongest of the time – and titles include "Perntz", "Fedja", "All Of Me", and "So What".
