VariousImaginational Anthem Vol 9 – Ryley Walker Presents ... CD
Tompkins Square, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Hard to believe this excellent series is hitting its ninth volume – and this time around, Ryley Walker is at the helm – making excellent musical choices that really keep things fresh! As with previous volumes, the focus is on the most creative talents of the acoustic underground – usually heard here in a solo setting, but sometimes with light additional instrumentation – pushing forward that tradition of music that Tompkins Square has been so essential in capturing in recent years – almost as if the label has become the Takoma Records of the 21st Century! Walker makes some great choices here, and focuses on some overlooked and up-and-coming talents, including a few from our hometown of Chicago. Tracks include "Wooden Waltz" by Eli Winter, "Leicester Hwy" by Shane Parish, "Boat Ride" by Kendra Amalie, "World Of Objects (guitar edit)" by Fire Toolz, "Knots Where Never Was" by Lucas Brode, "Seedlings" by Dave Miller, "Variations On Themes For Blind Dogs" by Pete Fosco, and "I Used To Sing" by Matthew Rolin. Funk Night, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of three great seven inch pairings of The Great Revivers and vocal group Lucid Paradise – with a strong female lead on "Not The One", which has the tune soaring to the skies over the funky drums at the core! Drums are equally tight on "B Boy Anthem", but the vocals are what really make it great – this kind of moody harmony exclamation – very different than you might expect, then leading into a killer drum break with lots of organ and guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Angel Bat DawidOracle ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
Beautiful solo sounds from Angel Bat Dawid – a Chicago clarinetist who works here with the same inventive spirit as the other contemporary artists on the International Anthem label! By that, we mean that although Angel's music starts in jazz, it quickly becomes something else – as she assembled the record not from a solitary solo performance, but by overdubbing sounds she'd recorded around the globe, and back home in Chicago – mixing her own very beautiful reed lines with a variety of other instrumentation – all recorded on cell phone, which gives the whole thing a wonderfully fresh feel! Don't worry about the album being too gimmicky, or too DIY – as it's got the same appeal as a studio-recorded spiritual session by a larger group – and there's plenty of focus on Dawid's incredible solos on her chosen instrument, with a vibe that's likely to have her rising to the level of clarinet giants like Jimmy Guiffre or John Carter. Titles include "Black Family", "Capetown", "The Oracle", "We Are Starzz", "London", and "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black". CD

Freddie Douggie (Ben LaMar Gay & JayVe Montgomery)Freddie Douggie – Live On Juneteenth ... Cassette
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 11.00
One of the most enigmatic records we've ever heard on the International Anthem label – and that's really saying a lot, given their unique musical legacy! Freddie Douggie is a collaboration between Ben LaMar Gay and JayVe Montgomery – working here in modes that go way beyond jazz and improvised music – with all these unusual sonic touches that paint a richly colorful portrait of the Juneteenth day of celebration! Some tracks might use percussion or a stringed instrument, others are more electronic in nature – and vocals are used occasionally, but not often – and as with some of the best releases on International Anthem, the music is very powerful and moving – but in ways we can hardly describe! Titles include "Slave To Employee", "Gravel Spring", "Any Train We Can Catch", "Dutty Rice", "Jubilee", "LEVAS", "Freedom Day", and "Such A Frolic". Cassette

Damon Locks & Black Monument EnsembleWhere Future Unfolds ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
An amazing record from Chicago musician/artist Damon Locks – maybe the album he's been waiting his entire life to make – and the first to really bring together the mighty sum of his many talents! The material was recorded live in performance at Chicago's Garfield Park Conservatory – at an event that also included a group of singers and dancers to augment the musical performance – in a setting that gives Damon's majestic vision the proper setting it really deserves! Locks himself moves between electronics and vocal performances – in a core instrumental group that's heavy on drums and percussion from Dana Hall, clarinets from Angel Bat Dawid, and more percussion from Arif Smith – making music that's even more beautiful when the singers come into the mix, and take the energy to the sky with a very cosmic, righteous vibe. Locks has given us a glimpse of his vision in artwork, music, and writings over the years – but this time around, it feels like we're seeing the full scope at once – with more power and meaning than ever before. Titles include "Solar Power", "Rebuild A Nation", "Which I Believe It Will", "The Colors That You Bring", "The Future", "From A Spark To A Fire", "Black Monument Theme", and "Sounds Like Now". CD

Nick Mazzarella TrioUltraviolet ... LP
International Anthem, 2015. Very Good+ ... $14.99
The strongest album to date from Chicago saxophonist Nick Mazzarella – a trio set that has the leader's alto blazing out in brilliantly soulful spirit, alongside robust bass from Anton Hatwich and magical drums from Frank Rosaly! The group have a cohesion that we might not have expected from the players a handful of years before – a sense of unity that's extremely dramatic, and which grabs our ears right from the start of the record – insisting that we listen with rapt attention, almost as if they're announcing the set as a new classic in jazz. All compositions are by Mazzarella, and although there's a lot of freedom in the playing, there's also an adhesion to his musical vision too – that wonderful balance of structure and openness that can really separate a record like this from the rest of the pack. Titles include "Neutron Star", "Luminous Dials", "Ultraviolet", "Fossil", and "Outlier". LP, Vinyl record album

Makaya McCravenHighly Rare ... LP
International Anthem, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Raw sounds from the Chicago scene – a mighty nice performance from the group of drummer Makaya McCraven – captured on four track cassette at the tiny Danny's Tavern! The setting and recording style really works with the approach of the group – as Makaya's drums are nice and loud – beat-y and splashy – maybe more funky than on any othe records under his name, and fitted with fantastically bold work from Junius Paul on bass, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, and the great Nick Mazzarella on alto sax! There's also some turntables from Lefto – but used musically, and not in the kind of heavy-handed way that used to ruin a jazz session a decade or so back – and the group perform titles that include "The Locator", "Above & Beyond", "Venus Rising", "Icy Lightning", "Left Fields", "RFJ III", and "Early Bird Once Again". Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings ... CD
International Anthem, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99 13.99
Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The whole thing is fantastic – and titles include "The Count Off", "Brighter Days Beginning", "Universal Beings", "Mantra", "Young Genius", "Holy Lands", "Wise Man Wiser Woman", "Prosperity's Fear", "Atlantic Black", "Flipped Out", "Voila", and "Suite Hans". Makaya McCravenWhere We Come From (Chicago x London Mixtape) ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Makaya McCraven pushes his unique jazz genius even further – by serving up a completely groundbreaking remix of live jazz performance on the London scene! McCraven's already stood out from the pack in the way that he breaks down jazz norms by playing with a recorded performance later in the studio – but this time around, he really pushes that approach to the forefront – working in a mode that really lives up to the "mixtape" of the title – but which also still has everything that we love from his other records too! Makaya's on drums – and plays with a massively heavy groove – and he plays here with some of the leading lights of the contemporary London scene – Soweto Kinch and Nubya Garcia on saxes, Joe Armon Jones on Fender Rhodes, Kamaal Williams on keyboards, and Theon Cross on tuba – in amazing performance activity which is then brought home to Chicago, where the music gets additional remix and overdub help from LeFto, Don Leisure, Earl Jeffers, Ben LaMar Gay, Emma Jean Thackray, Quiet Dawn, and Lexus Blondin. Clearly, Makaya's one hell of a collaborative spirit – yet he also manages to make this record his boldest personal statement to date – as you'll hear on titles that include "Halls", "Suite For Artis Gilmore", "Ox Tales", "The Bounce", "Oracle", "Run Dem", "Too Shy", and "Drums & Bruk & Feel The Vibe". International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A beautiful International Anthem debut from Resavoir – a group led by Will Miller, a musician who's equally skilled at both keyboards and trumpet – and who often plays in a style that sometimes makes it hard to tell which sound is coming from which instrument! In other words, there's trumpet-like phrasing to his keys, and keyboard-like washes of sound from the trumpet – set up array of players who ground any electric sounds in some very organic, acoustic elements. As with other releases on the label, there's a style here that's a bit hard to peg – but we can definitely say that there's a richness to the record that maybe makes it stand above even some of the others on IA, and which also makes the set very soulful as well. ✨✧ Jaimie BranchFly Or Die ... LP
International Anthem, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible debut from trumpeter Jaimie Branch – an artist who seems ready to be one of the boldest new voices in jazz on the Chicago scene! Branch works here at a level that both lives up to an AACM legacy of experimentation, and the rich exploration in new jazz forms that we love from the International Anthem label – a short-lived imprint, but who who've really opened up a wider audiences for the best creative efforts from our home town! Branch's group here is great – with Tomeka Reid on cello, Jason Ajemian on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums – the last of whom brings his wonderfully loose, open, yet still-swinging style to play – and creates this magical flow that only seems to inspire Jaimie's bold trumpet work even more. The record is constantly creative, but deeply spiritual too – and also includes guest performances from Josh Berman on cornet and Matt Schneider on guitar. International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux". International Anthem/Don Giovanni, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic mix of jazz and spoken word performance – delivered in a very righteous style that takes us back to the best vintage sides by artists like Wanda Robinson or Jayne Cortez! The words here are by Camae Ayewa – whose lyrics are as politically powerful as her presentation style – and the backing is by a superb quartet that features Keir Neuringer on alto, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – all musicians who really do a lot to contribute to the power of the spoken passages, but in a way that never overwhelms them! The instrumental sounds are as powerful as the lyrics – and together, they make for a record that would have been a shining jewel of the loft jazz generation, had it been recorded back in the day – but at a level that's even more incredible for a contemporary set. One of the most unusual "best of" collections you'll ever own – given that it features material pulled together from seven different albums by Ben LaMar Gay – none of which were ever released! The package is more of a debut than anything else – and a hell of a musical statement, too – as Ben's music is almost completely without referent – and that's saying a lot, given the already genre-busting nature of other releases on the International Anthem label! We might list the music under jazz – as it does feature some jazz instrumentation – but there's also lots of electronic elements too, often used in these shape-shifting ways that criss cross with other elements – like bass clarinet, flute, viola, and voice – all kind of crashing together in waves of sonic energy that embrace multiple genres at once, but never have the hokey result of other music that might try to do such a thing. Instead, imagine Ben's voice as being this bold cut-up experiment (in the original William S Burroughs mode) – but one that might have been taken across the scope of an entire record collection, sweeping up snatches of jazz, electronica, orchestral music, folk, hip hop, and lots more – all with results that are as revolutionary as Burroughs' writing. Titles include "Muhal", "Music For 18 Hairdressers – Braids & Friends", "7th Stanza", "Gator Teeth", "Swim Swim", "Kunni", "Oh No Not Again", "Jubilee", and "A Seasoning Called Primavera". CD

James BrownIt's A Mother ... LP
King, 1969. Very Good ... $14.99
A definite mother from James Brown – the kind of all-funky album that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match! If you've ever doubted the sheer raw power of James at the end of the 60s, the first few notes of this one will definitely make you a convert – and the stretched-out grooves as the album rolls on will pull you even further into the fold. Most tracks roll on with that improvised studio jamming style that James was hitting at the time – a pre-JBs mode that's not as long as later years, but which still makes you feel that there probably was plenty more recorded on the dates that didn't make it into the two-part versions of the tracks! And although James is singing on most numbers, the real focus is more on the band – hitting hard, vamping sharp, and grooving massively under shouted calls and directions from Brown. Titles include two great instrumentals – "Popcorn With a Feeling" and "Top of the Stack" – plus "Little Groove Maker Me (parts 1 & 2)", "Mother Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Mashed Potato Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Any Day Now", "You're Still Out Of Sight", and "I'm Shook" – as well as the great mellower number "If I Ruled The World" – redone here as an African-American anthem of pride and power! Polydor, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 34.99
An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! Titles include "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "Say It Loud", "If I Ruled The World", "There Was A Time", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Got The Feeling", "Cold Sweat", "Please Please Please", "Tighten Up", "Licking Stick", and lots more! Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Doug CarnInfant Eyes ... LP
Black Jazz, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label! The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her later soul work as a solo act, and with a vibe that's like Dee Dee Bridgewater at her soulful 70s best. Jean does a killer job with the album's classic vocal version of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" – done here with sweet lyrics that really open the song up a lot, and make it into an anthem of love and joy that we'd be hard pressed to match with any other tune! And all other tracks are great too – with titles that include "Moon Child", "Passion Dance", and a great version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

A massive album by Lamont Dozier – probably his best ever! Every cut's a winner, and the LP shines with a sharpness and tightness that's missing from some of Lamont's other LPs from the 70s. The songwriting is impeccable – and as the album progresses, you get that eerie "deja vu" feeling you can have when discovering a landmark work for the first time. There's a hint of funk in the mix, but the strongest point is the production – which bowls over the top with a mix of strings, piano, and Lamont's wonderfully honest vocals. Includes the wonderful soul anthem "Don't Leave Me", which comes up again in a very tight instrumental version – plus the tracks "The Picture Will Never Change", "Why Can't We Be Lovers", and "Slipping Away". Great all the way through, and a stunning bit of seventies soul that will have you returning again and again! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky cuts, but the second half really stretches out, and features a side-long track that has the Doctor at his most freewheeling – mixing deep currents from soul and blues with all the great ear for studio techniques he'd developed over the years – fused into a sound that's almost a fantasy of a soulful subculture in the swamps. Titles include "Loop Garoo", "Wash Mama Wash", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Mardi Gras Day", and "Chippy Chippy" – plus the side-long "Angola Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderful work from the ladies who helped redirect R&B during the 90s! Sure, En Vogue were chart toppers for many years – but they also were some of the first female singers to really use the changes in hip hop production to work out a more solid approach to soul music – heavy beats at the bottom that make their music a perfect fit for a younger soul audience who were raised on equal parts hip hop – but more than enough of the class and care to still appeal to an older audience as well. The vocals are wonderful – strong and proud – and titles include the huge hits "Hold On" and "Lies" – plus "Time Goes On", "Strange", "You Don't Have To Worry", "Don't Go", "Luv Lines", "Part Of Me", and "Party". 2 CD version is overflowing with bonus tracks – including "Waitin On You", "Silent Nite (Holiday edit)", "Mover", "National Anthem", "You Don't Have To Worry (radio)", "Lies (avant garde edit)", "You Don't Have To Worry (UK edit)", "Hold On (ext version)", "Lies (extended avant garde)", "Strange (house rmx)", "Silent Nite (long holiday mix)", "Hold On (hip hop rmx)", "Time Goes On (dance rmx)", "Lies (Kwame's bone age rmx)", "Hold On (dub)", "Lies (new jack rmx)", and "You Don't Have To Worry (lo cal mix)". A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of spirituality that runs deeper than previously expressed. The key track in this vision is his brilliant modal number "Maiden Voyage" – one of those tunes that sounded totally fresh immediately, and which was picked up by many others as a jazz anthem during the 60s. The rest of the album's equally great – and features George Coleman on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all making for a very hip lineup that really lets Herbie open up stylistically! The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. Think what you want – we think this is a damn great soul album! Sure, the record was a crossover classic that got played to death back in the 80s – but give it a listen now, and you'll be stunned to hear how fresh it sounds, and how much it reminds you of all the British soul acts that sprung up in the years after it was released. We're not saying that Sade had a direct influence on groups like Soul To Soul or Brand New Heavies – but this album's strong commitment to acoustic musical styles and real jazz playing made it a real standout in the often-tinny world of 80s chart soul, and a harbinger of the later return to warm soul styles that would be spurred on by other groups from the UK. Plus, Sade's vocals are incredibly well-wrought, and are the perfect vehicle to deliver songs like "Frankie's First Affair", "Hang On To Your Love", "Your Love Is King", and the seminal 80s slacker dancefloor anthem, "When Am I Going To Make A Living". A later album by Pharoah, but one of his best! The record is a very tight set of tracks that includes the amazing jazz dance anthem "You've Got to Have Freedom", a killer groover that will stay in your head for days after you've heard it! The rest of the material's equally great, and the record has a solidity that matches all of the soulful spirituality of his Impulse years with the a tightness that really sends the message home! Pharoah's working here with a great set of soul jazz musicians – players that include Eddie Henderson, John Hicks, and Idris Muhammad – and the double-length album's filled with great tracks that include "Think About The One", "Bedria", "Doktor Pitt", and "After the Rain". An amazing bit of falsetto soul – and a tune that's become an anthem around Dusty Groove these days – given how many times we play it in the store! "Didn't I" has an infectious raspy guitar bit at the start, then rolls into harmony vocals, supporting Darondo's wickedly sharp lead! The whole tune's amazing – and it's one you'll be humming for weeks! ✨✧ Merle HaggardPortrait Of Merle Haggard/Keep Movin' On ... CD
BGO/Capitol (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of Capitol Records killers from Merle Haggard – back to back on a single CD! First up is A Portrait Of Merle Haggard – a 1969 album that shows just how much he'd grown and matured during his 60s years at Capitol Records – and almost a celebration of all that time, given how many great songs Merle manages to put inside the record! The set begins with the sublime "Working Man's Blues" – a tune that's got jazzier currents than Hag ever had a few years back, but which also delivers a very pointed message to the bulk of his audience – and creates a new anthem for Merle in the process. The record then progresses with a host of other fantastic tracks, half originals by Haggard, and all showing the many moods of the maturing singer – "What's Wrong With Stayin Home", "Silver Wings", "I Die Ten Thousand Times A Day", "I Came Close To Living Alone", "Who Do I Know In Dallas", and a great version of "She Still Thinks I Care". Keep Movin On is a mid 70s effort from Merle Haggard, and one that shows just how much he continued to bring his best to his work for Capitol Records – not just in his vocals, but in his songwriting too – as the album features almost all original material by Haggard! The mood nicely varies, and Hag hits some of those maturing masculine modes that were coming in with some of his contemporaries – blending "stay at home with the wife" sort of songs with others that echo more of the hellraising and sadness of younger years – all as a beautiful testament to his genius! Titles include "Movin' On", "Life's Like Poetry", "September In Miami", "Here In Frisco", "Always Wanting You", "Kentucky Gambler", "A Man's Gotta Give Up A Lot", "I've Got A Yearning", and "These Memories We're Making Tonight". Kent (UK), 1967/1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last 2 albums that the Impressions ever cut for ABC during the 60s, both of them pretty darn nice! The Fabulous Impressions has a vibe that's way more than you'd expect from the group's supper club style on the cover – as the record features a great set of original Curtis Mayfield compositions, sung by the group in great form, with arrangements by the total genius Johnny Pate! The record is filled with haunting soul tracks like "Isle Of Sirens", "Aware Of Love", "It's All Over", "Love's A Comin", "You Ought To Be In Heaven", and "She Don't Love Me" – all written by Curtis, and all proof that he's always been one of the best soul songwriters! A nice little gem that often gets lost in the band's catalog – but one to seek out, even if you're a bit nervous about a record with "fabulous" in the title! We're A Winner is a whole new level of pride and power for The Impressions – as you might guess from the bold statement of the title track! It may seem hard to believe from the perspective of the 21st Century, but back in the mid 60s, a message like "We're A Winner" was quite a strong one – a new anthem of righteous identity that was one of the first truly political statements from a young Curtis Mayfield, and a great precursor of the genius to come in the 70s! But even at this early state, there's still plenty of genius going on – not just in Mayfield's sublime songwriting, but also in the harmonies of the group, and the beautiful treatment they get in the studio from arranger Johnny Pate. The album's one of their key classics from the ABC years – and titles include "We're A Winner", "Moonlight Shadows", "Nothing Can Stop Me", "I'm Gettin Ready", "Let Me Tell The World", and "Little Brown Boy". The songs aren't as overtly strident as the ones on Sometime In New York City, but there's plenty of passion bubbling under the surface – and the struggle to be as honest and passionate as he can be without bludgeoning us over the head with his feelings brings an underlying tension the work as whole that's pretty amazing to this day. ✨✧ Dr JohnRemedies/Desitively Bonnaroo ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two funky classics from Dr John – back to back in a single set! First up is Remedies, one of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! Desitively Bonnaroo is filled with tight funky work from Dr John – a second collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint, and a set that follows strongly on their Right Place record of the year before! The groove's not as messed-up as on the first few Atlantic records by the Doctor – but in it's place is a sweet electric funk mode, kind of an update on 60s New Orleans grooves – handled here by The Meters and a host of other key players from the Crescent City scene! Toussaint's production and arrangements are tight, but never slick at all – still much earthier than the later work, especially that on Warner Brothers, that was handled by the producer. And the tunes have a good focus that keeps Dr John on track lyrically – even though we'll admit that our main love of this record comes from the keyboards, bass, and funky drums! Titles include "Stealin", "What Comes Around (Goes Around)", "Mos' Scocious", "Rite Away", "R U 4 Real", "Let's Make A Better World", "Sing Along Song", "Go Tell The People", "Quitters Never Win", and "Can't Git Enuff". The fantastic first album as a leader from Chicago bassist Matthew Lux – long overdue after over two decades of wonderful work on the city's scene with a variety of other combos! Matt's fantastic here as a leader – completely inventive to the point where he can evoke Charles Mingus on one track, then hit a global funk element on another, and reach these strange sci-fi elements on the next – but all while keeping his feet very firmly planted on the ground! There's an unbridled sense of creativity going on here – kind of that post-avant, post-free mode that the International Anthem scene has gotten going – and Lux's partners here are Mikel Patrick Avery on drums, acoustic guitar, and mellotron; Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, electronics, and melodica; and Jayve Montgromery on tenor, flute, samples, and clarinumpet! With that mix of instrumentation – Lux also plays some guitar, chirimia, and synth, and everyone plays percussion – you can imagine that sonic textures of the album, which often stays in relatively spiritual territory. Titles include "Til You Were Gone" by Frank Wilson, "Love Love Love" by Bobby Hebb, "Stop Her On Sight" by Edwin Starr, "What More Could A Boy Ask For" by The Spinners, "Can't Satisfy" by The Impressions, "I'm The One Who Loves You" by Darrell Banks, "Why Am I Lovin You" by Debbie Dean, "The Night" by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, "I Got A Feelin" by Barbara Randolph, "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by The Elgins, "Dr Love" by Bobby Sheen, "Trampoline" by Spencer Davis Group, "Nothing Left To Give" by Thelma Houston, "Baby I Miss You" by Tommy Good, "I've Been Blessed" by Bobby Taylor, "Look What You Done Boy" by The Lollipops, "Friday Night" by Johnny Taylor, "Baby I Love You" by Howard Tate, "Helpless" by Kim Weston, "Moody woman" by Jerry Butler, "There's A Ghost In My House" by R Dean Taylor, "Ordinary Joe" by Terry Callier, "Wade In The Water" by Marlena Shaw, "Drop In The Bucket" by Mary Wells, "Baby A Go Go" by Barbara McNair, "Love's Gone Bad" by Chris Clark, "Run For Cover" by The Dells, "Battened Ships" by Odyssey, "Nothing But A Heartache" by The Flirtations, "Sure Is A Lotta Woman" by The Isley Brothers, and "Keep On Lovin Me" by Francis Nero. ✨✧ VariousNorthern Soul – All-Nighter Anthems (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Warner (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two albums' worth of tracks that set the Northern Soul scene on fire at the end of the 60s – American rare soul from back in the day, but tunes that were appreciated even more by the British soul audience – who helped some of these tracks achieve legendary status through their all-night action on the dancefloor! The tunes here are all upbeat, and most are from the late 60s or very start of the 70s – and while most numbers are tracks that first broke big back in the day, there are others here that show the evolving ear of the Northern Soul crowd – as they continue to dig for new and obscure tracks over the decades since they initially got started. The package features 28 tracks in all – and titles include "Walking Up A One Way Street" by Willie Tee, "What's Wrong With Me Baby" by The Invitations, "Open The Door To Your Heart" by Darrell Banks, "Go For Yourself" by Larry Lester, "Break Out" by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, "Dance Dance Dance" by The Casualeers, "Skiing In The Snow" by The Invitations, "No 1 In Your Heart" by Herbie Goins & The Night-Timers, "Some Kind Of Wonderful" by Soul Brothers Six, "You're Ready Now" by Frankie Valli, "Mean It Baby" by Carl Hall, "Bring Your Love Back To Me" by Linda Lynell, "I Just Can't Live My Life" by Linda Jones, "That's When The Tears Star" by The Blossoms, "Move On Up" by Curtis Mayfield, "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones, "Both Ends Up Against The Middle" by Jackie Moore, "Here I Go Again" by Archie Bell & The Drells, and "Something New To Do" by Bobby Sheen. Beastie BoysLicensed To Ill ... CD
Def Jam/Columbia, 1986. Used ... $1.99
The game changing Def Jam classic – and possibly the greatest album by the Beastie Boys – even though they'd grow up a whole lot after this! Profane party anthems galore, and the Beasties would distance themselves from much of the attitude of this album, making their career arc from stoopid (as opposed to stupid) to thoughtful and playful innovators one of the more interesting artistic evolutions of their generation for sure. With all the killer cuts: "Rhymin & Stealin", "The New Style", "Girls", "Fight For Your Right To Party", "No Sleep Til Brooklyn", "Paul Revere", "Hold It Now Hit It", "She's Crafty", and more. CD

Blk JksMystery EP ... 12-inch
Secretly Canadian, 2009. Very Good+ ... $7.99
The Blk Jks debut for the Secretly Canadian label! The sound on these tracks is pretty incredible – with skittish beats and shimmering guitars that slowly building for kind of anthemic sweep – wrapped up with some spacious production that slides the vocals around the instrumentation wonderfully. The style is unique, and carries echoes of some of the farther reaching early 80s post new wave and no wave adventurous, touches of psychedelia, more soul based sounds, and Afro rock rhythms. Titles include "Mystery", "Lakeside", "It's In Every Thing You'll See", and "Summertime". 12-inch, Vinyl record

David BowieBlackstar ... LP
ISO/Columbia, 2016. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
David Bowie's late career peak arrived just days before he left us! The preceding record The Next Day was a solid reminder of Bowie at his fuzz guitar-graced 70s best, while still standing firm in the here-and-now, yet we still sort of wished for more creatively daring work. Here it is! Once again, Bowie co-produces with Tony Visconti, but it's clear from the start that they're going for something deeper and more complex. Chilling bits of strings, keyboards and sputtering beats begin the epic title track, before Bowie's voice comes in like a spirtual guide – approaching Scott Walker territory here – augmented by sax and other cool touches. It's an amazing start to an unpredictable set of songs, each as hypnotic as the one before. The stranger vibe of the opener comes in and out as the album plays on, but there's some fuzzier and heavier bits, too – on songs that are enigmatic and anthemic, arty and accessible. Incredible! Other titles include '"Tis A Pity, She Was A Whore", "Lazarus", "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)", "Girl Loves Me", "Dollar Days" and "I Can't Give Everything Away". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram vinyl, including booklet. Cover has some small tears in the die-cut.)
