AmbianceInto A New Journey ... LP
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great 2LP pressing – plays at 45rpm!)

Ambiance II Fusion EnsembleGida Gida – Tight & Tidy (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Da Mon/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the best records ever recorded by the Ambiance II Fusion Ensemble – a group led by sax player Daoud Abubakar Balewa – and grooving here in a mix of soul jazz and electric fusion that sounds pretty darn sweet overall! Daoud's got a pinched style to his reed work, creating a tone that's almost sad – even in the more joyful moments of the record – and it blends well with the album's work on electric guitar and keyboards. There's a great jazzy groover on the album with a sweet Jazz Biznezz feel – "Fiesta", a lively Latinized number that has some sweet female vocals. Other tracks are a mix of styles, but hold together nicely – and titles include "There Is A Love", "Quasar", "The Clavicle", and "Baggage". CD

✨✧ VariousMusique Concrete ... LP
BAM/Cacophonic (UK), 1960. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mighty burst of electronic sound from the late 50s Musique Concrete scene in France – all created by the Groupe De Recherches Musicales under the direction of Pierre Schaeffer! Schaeffer was one of the first to get the movement going in the earlier part of the decade, and he works here alongside some key contemporaries who were coming to the forefront – in an amazing array of recorded sounds, electronics, and some acoustic elements that are very abstracted in the process of presentation! The sounds are incredible – still as earth-shattering today as when they were recorded – maybe even more so, given that they've hardly been matched over the passage of decades. Titles include "Diamorphoses" by Yannis Xenakis, "Etude Aux Sons Tendus" and "Etude Aux Accidents" by Luc Ferrari, "Ambiance 1" by Michel Philippot, "Aspect Sentimental" by Henri Sauguet, and "Etude Aux Sons" and "Etude Aux Allures" by Pierre Schaeffer.
