✨✧ Lekan BabalolaSongs Of Icon ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2006. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the best new Afro Funk albums we've heard in years – a tremendous effort from percussionist Lekan Babalola, served up with a full bonus disc of remix material! The core grooves here are a fair bit jazzier than most other efforts of this type – still with heavy percussion from Lekan, but also featuring beautiful sax and trumpet lines on most tracks – boldly stating themes, then stretching out in well-spirited solos that break the record past typical rhythmic conventions for this sort of set! There's also some really great electric keyboards on the record too – snaking out in the grooves to give them a nice little 70s touch – and really coming to the forefront on some of the remix work by Phil Asher, Bob Sinclar, IG Culture, and others! Main tracks include "Kabioye", "Aso Kere", "Oba Laye", "Oososi", "Oya", and "Ide Osun" – and remix tracks include "Oba Awon Oba (Afronaught vs Misa Negra vocal)", "Oya (Broken Beats Le Pico rmx)", "Aso Kere (IG Culture rmx)", "Kabioye (Mark De Clive-Lowe rmx)", "Kabioye (Phil Asher Restless Soul mix)", and "Elegba (Bob Sinclar remix)". ✨✧ Ojo BalingoAfrotunes – Best of Juju Vol 2 – Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 26.98
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". ✨✧ VariousGilles Peterson In Africa ... CD
Ether (UK), 1970s/2005. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary Gilles Peterson takes on the African sound of the 70s – serving up the music at 2 different levels on this overstuffed set! Disc 1 features "The Soul" – classic tunes from the Afro Funk years, brought together by Gilles with a real ear for an interesting groove – and the kind of deeply soulful tracks we've come to expect in his collections over the years. Disc 2 features "The Spirit" – modern tracks from the global underground – all of which have echoes of the older African groove in their rhythms, but which update the sound with changes in rhythm, production, and instrumentation. As with Gilles Peterson In Brazil, the package is a wonderful overview of a genre – done in a way that goes deeper and sounds fresher than most other collections of its nature on the market! 2CD set features 19 tracks in all – including "Bukom Moashie" by Oscar Sulley, "Ajo" by Peter King, "Asmarina" by Fequadu Made-Mesqel, "Mulatu" by Mulatu, "Mahlalela" by Letta Mbulu, "MAW Expensive (Tribute To Fela)" by Masters At Work, "Heart's A Lonely Hunter" by Thievery Corporation with David Byrne, "Aso Kere (IG Culture mix)" by Lekan Babalola, "Lufala Ndonga" by Konono No 1, "Samba" by Miriam Makeba, "Afrika" by Osborne, "Angola (Carl Craig rmx)" by Cesaria Evora, and "New Bell" by Manu Dibango. CD
