✨✧ Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

✨✧ Joe Albany with Warne MarshRight Combination ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A teaming of two modern jazz talents from differing generations – one, pianist Joe Albany, rediscovered and re-recorded here after a number of years of obscurity during the 50s – the other, Warne Marsh, an emerging genius with one of the best tenor tones of his generation. The pair play together in an unusually spare setting – with no drums, and only bass work by Bob Whitlock for extra accompaniment. A real standout in the Riverside catalog – and recorded in LA, which makes one more distinction from the label's mostly New York output. Titles include "Daahoud", "Body & Soul", "I Love You", and "It's You Or No One" – and the record's a great one to hear Marsh in an unbridled setting. CD

✨✧ Art PepperTribute To Charlie Parker ... CD
Jazzbank/PJL (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A previously unissued live recorded by Art Pepper – playing at a 1975 tribute to Charlie Parker, recorded in Pasadena with a lineup that includes Joe Albany on piano, Roy Porter on drums, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, and Harry Babasin on bass. That quintet of players is enough to get our interest on this one – and we've got to say that the blend of baritone and alto is really great – and handled here with an open-blowing spirit that really keeps our imagination up on the set's long interpretations of Parker classics. The sound quality is a bit "live", but the quality of the solos shines through tremendously – and titles include "Groovin High", "All The Things You Are", "Ornithology", and "Donna Lee" – all over 10 minutes in length! CD

✨✧ Art PepperComplete 1975 Garden State Jam Sessions ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1975. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The title says "Garden State", but the material's from California – but we'll forgive the producers of the CD for that, given that they don't live in the US! Disc 1 features a really unusual 70s recording from Art Pepper – quite different than most of his better-known work from the time! The group alone is enough to indicate the unusual quality of the set – as it's larger than usual, with a great lineup that includes Harold Land and Buddy Collette on tenor, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Butch Lacy on electric piano – all coming together with a magically free-flowing and soulful sound – recorded in San Diego in 1975. The presence of the electric piano touches the set with a nice degree of electricity – but the real energy comes from the fantastic horn interplay, stretching out nicely over the album's 3 long tracks. Titles include "Blue's Blue", "Milestones", and "Over The Rainbow". Disc 2 features Art Pepper playing at a 1975 tribute to Charlie Parker, recorded in Pasadena with a lineup that includes Joe Albany on piano, Roy Porter on drums, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, and Harry Babasin on bass. This material was previously available on 2 separate, expensive Japanese CDs – now out at a nice low price! CD
