✨✧ Bill Evans & Toots ThielemansAffinity ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful pairing – the keyboards of Bill Evans and harmonica of Toots Thielemans – presented here in a space that marks the record as one of the best from both players in the 70s! Some tunes are sad and blue, and very spare – others a bit more upbeat and lyrical, almost taking us back to Bill's more sprightly modes of the early 60s – and the clear, clean sound offers up the best tones from both players in a perfect space. Other musicians include Marc Johnson on bass, Eliot Zigmund on drums, and Larry Schneider on flute, tenor, and soprano sax – and Evans plays a bit of electric piano in addition to acoustic, something we always love! Titles include "I Do It For Your Love", "The Days Of Wine & Roses", "Jesus' Last Ballad", "The Other Side Of Midnight", "Blue & Green", and "Tomato Kiss". LP, Vinyl record album

Affinity (UK), 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Jimmy Lyons' recordings for BYG/Actuel are among some of the best for the label, and this one from 1969 is a stellar session that features Lester Bowie on trumpet, Alan Silva on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. All players are excellent, and they play together in a set of free tracks in which Cyrille drives everyone onto new heights with a steady singing pulse. Bowie and Lyons trade beautiful lines back and forth, and the set includes the tracks "Other Afternoons", "My You", "Premonitions", and "However". LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneLive In Paris Volume 1 ... LP
BYG/Affinity (UK), 1962. Sealed ... $19.99
A wonderful live set, recorded in Paris in 1962 – and featuring the quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. The set features three long Coltrane standards – "Impressions", "Afro Blue", and "Naima" – all done in that beautiful spiralling modal style that the group used on their classic first set of recordings at the Village Vanguard. In fact, the set's a perfect complement to that material – which we feel is some of Coltrane's strongest. LP, Vinyl record album

Cooper and Holman don't actually play together on this album but it is rather a collection of some of their sessions for Capitol, originally in the Kenton Presents Jazz series, from 1954. Side A is mostly comprised of Cooper and his band playing such songs as "The Way You Look Tonight", "Lisbon Lady", "Group Activity", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "Solo Plight". Cooper's Sextet included such musicians as Bud Shank, Shelly Manne and Stan Levy. Side B are all original Holman compositions and they include "Awfully Busy", "Back To Minors", "Cousin Jack", "Sparkle", and "Plain Folks". Holman's band included such musicians as Stu Williamson, Max Bennett, Stan Levey, and Herb Geller. LP, Vinyl record album

Affinity (UK), 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A strong French session from 1969 – one in which Lacy gets back to his roots with a bunch of Monk compositions – working in the angular mode that first helped him get modern in the late 50s, after starting his career as a trad jazz player. The group on the set features JF Jenny-Clark on bass, Aldo Romano on drums, and Michel Graillier on piano – and Lacy proves once again that the soprano sax has some incredible powers, when placed in the right hands! Titles include "Epistrophy", "Ruby My Dear", "Mysterioso", and "Friday the 13th". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 00s 180 gram reissue on Get Back. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Wes MontgomerySolitude ... LP
Affinity (UK), 1965. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Great live material from Wes Montgomery – very nicely recorded, and featuring the bulk of a live show that took place on March 27, 1965, in Paris! The group features Harold Mabern on piano, Art Harper on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums – plus Johnny Griffin joining in on one track – and the overall approach of the record is quite different than some of Wes' larger group studio sessions of the time. Tracks are all mostly long, and Wes is working in some really great solo modes – still as tight and soulful as ever, but really taking a lot of chances and working through some techniques to much greater impact than on the shorter studio tracks. Titles include "Mister Walker", "To Django", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "Round Midnight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s issue, still sealed, with slightly wavy panels.)

✨✧ Max RoachAgain Volume 2 ... LP
Affinity (UK), 1960/1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Some of the hippest Max Roach work of the 60s! This album features one half of the set that was issued on Affinity as a double LP. This first side is made up of 3 tracks featuring Clifford Jordan on tenor, Coleridge Parkinson on piano, and Abbey Lincoln on some vocals – all recorded at an unknown location in 1961: "Long As You're Living", "Who Will Buy", and "Love For Sale". The second side has 2 tracks from a concert in Paris, with Max's group that included Tommy & Stanley Turrentine, as well as Julian Priester. The tracks are long and open-ended – with an approach that you wouldn't find on the group's Mercury sides from the time – both Roach originals: "Kardouba" and "Stop Motion", with the Turrentines stretching out in a soul jazz searching mode that's quite different than their Blue Note work. LP, Vinyl record album
(Spanish pressing. Cover has some ring & surface wear.)

✨✧ Gato BarbieriObsession ... LP
Affinity (UK), 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Pretty fierce stuff from Gato Barbieri – a firey avant session that's very much in the mode of his work for ESP, and his playing with Don Cherry in the late 60s. The set was recorded in Milan in 1967, with a trio that includes JF Jenny Clark on bass and Aldo Romano on drums – and Gato's pretty free and unbridled in his tenor solos, playing with the style he was using a lot at the time, part-Coltrane, but with the soulfulness of Pharoah Sanders even in the freer moments. Titles include "Michelle" and "Obsession". LP, Vinyl record album

One's from February of 1962, and features Tyner, Garrison, and Jones, with the addition of Eric Dolphy, on long readings of "Mr PC", "Miles Mode", and "My Favorite Things". The second live set is from June of the same year, also at Birdland, with the same group, minus Dolphy – on a long reading of "Body & Soul". CD

Miles Davis & Jimmy ForrestLive At The Barrel Vol 1 ... LP
Prestige, 1952. Near Mint- ... $14.99
An amazing meeting of two very different players who might not normally record together – although maybe not as much of a surprise, given that the set was recorded in the St Louis home turf of both Miles Davis and Jimmy Forrest! At the time, Miles was already a star, but Jimmy was becoming a hell of a tenor player – one that seems to have more of a bop affinity here than on later records – blowing head to head with Davis, and really stretching out on long solos throughout. The rhythm section features Charles Fox on piano, Johnny Mixon on bass, and Oscar Oldham on drums – and titles on this first volume include "Ray's Idea", "Night In Tunisia", "Wee Dot", and "What's New". Takeshi ObayashiBig News (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Eight Islands (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... $28.99 33.99
A fantastic trio set from pianist Takeshi Obayashi – a player you might know from work with Jose James and Takuya Kuroda, but one who really steps out here strongly in a trio setting! Part of the record's strength is the rhythm help – as Ben Williams plays bass and Nate Smith plays drums – both musicians who have a round, chunky sort of groove that works perfectly with Obayashi's piano as he spins out strongly soulful tunes that offer up a vision of jazz piano trio energy in the post-Robert Glasper world! All players contribute equally to the sound – and Williams is especially great – on titles that include "Konbini Confessions", "Black Label", "The Big News", "Ngroove", "Beyond Affinity", and "Bop Boom". Frank RosolinoFrank Rosolino – Kenton Presents ... LP
Capitol, 1954. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by trombonist Frank Rosolino – a hip set issued under the Stan Kenton Presents banner for Capitol in the mid 50s – but done in a smaller combo mode than you'd hear with Stan! The setting provides a great showcase for the emerging solo talents of Rosolino on trombone – a player with a soulful swing that get way past his goofy image on the cover – and which is set up here in the company of some great collaborators who include Charlie Mariano on alto sax – playing so strongly, the album might well include him as a co-leader – plus piano from either Claude Williamson or Pete Jolly, trumpet from Sam Noto, bass from Max Bennett or Curtis Counce, and drums from Mel Lewis or Stan Levey. There's not only a lot of Kenton influence in the players, but a lot of Bethlehem Records styles as well – a reference that definitely shapes the sound of this set, and makes it a strong one for any fan of 50s work on that label – or Mode Records as well. Titles are a mix of standards and originals – and include "Ragamuffin", "Linda", "Carioca", "Besame Mucho", "Yo Yo", and "Freckles". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s UK Affinity pressing. Cover has light wear and a small yellowed sticker spot.)

Frank RosolinoFrankly Speaking ... LP
Capitol, 1955. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A very nice little LA jazz session – not necessarily for Rosolino's trombone, which is still pretty nice, but really for the presence of Charlie Mariano, who gets a good chance to lay down some great solos in the session's small quintet with Walter Norris, Max Bennett, and Stan Levy. The tracks are tightly arranged – as you'd expect from an album like this in the "Kenton Presents" series – but Mariano always manages to get a bit of soul in, and has some very nice moments that are worth the price of the album. Titles include "Slan", "Kingfish", "The Missus", and "Now I Lay Me Down To Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderfully groovy, chill out soul from Finland's Quintessence – and warm batch of tracks the blends the echoey, tripped out 70s jazz aesthetic with hip hop and club production techniques as seamlessly as just about anything out there! Sublime keys, trumpet and occasional fluegelhorn lilt over programmed beats and live drums, but what really makes the groove standout are the breathy, layered vocals of Emma Salokoski – who sings and sometimes scats in English, with a real affinity for natural soul. 10 tracks in all, including "Sticks & Stones", "1st Impressions", "Never", "Raindrops", "The Right", "Skywalker", "Sparkle" and more! Hi Note, indeed! Gerardo Frisina's latest is awe-inspiring – a completely seamless blend of Italian and Latin jazz, bossa rhythms and percussion, and some of the most tasteful and naturally blended electronic elements you could ever expect to hear on an album so steeped in a genuine affinity for live jazz instrumentation! If memory serves, earlier Frisina recordings relied a bit more on the production side of the coin, but this one's so strong on great instrumentation we're rendered pretty close to speechless. Lots of great horn arrangements, rolling bass lines and piano, sublime vibes and driving drums and percussion. Totally sweet throughout – this is way up there with the best dancefloor jazz Schema's ever released! Tracks include "Inviolatin", "Joyas", "Bluesanova", "Beyond The Moon", "Ombroso", "Sophisticated Samba" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Boots MussulliKenton Jazz Presents Boots Mussulli Quartet – Little Man ... LP
Capitol, 1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Easily one of the best of the Kenton Presents series on Capitol – and one of the few albums to ever focus on the genius talents of saxophonist Boots Mussulli! We'd put Boots in the same camp as Charlie Mariano in the 50s – on one hand a clear modernist, with a crisp and fresh tone, and a keen ear for interesting arrangements – but on the other hand, a player with an incredible amount of soul, and a tone that's far more personal than academic! This quartet session features Boots playing in New York, with west coasters Shelly Manne on drums and Max Bennett on bass, as well as pianist Ray Santisi to round out the group. Titles include "El Morocco", "Mutt & Jeff", "Tico Tico", and "Rubber Boots". LP, Vinyl record album

An early 90s contemporary hip hop-steeped street soul gem from Intro! Intro deftly introduce themselves with a style that was as timely as could be circa '93, and holds up with classic swagger today. While 90s hip hop soul styled beats and production finesse has a timeless shelf life in the best hands, some of the pop soul crossover efforts of the day didn't stay quite as fresh as Intro, whose affinity for their era with inspiration from groups like the Gap Band and the Isleys keeps it as fresh as ever. ✨✧ Lou Bennett QuartetEnfin! ... CD
BMG (France), 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a Hammond set – and from Europe, no less! Lou Bennett was a visionary player from the US who recorded some of his best work in the French scene of the 60s – grooving in a mode that was clearly inspired by Jimmy Smith, but which also showed some of the talent for pushing the Hammond past its boundaries – as would show up more heavily in the work of Larry Young. Like Young, Bennett displays an early affinity for the work of Coltrane – apparent here from the album's leadoff take on Trane's jaunty "Moment's Notice". Other tracks on the set are equally striking – and include versions of Ornette Coleman's "Jane" and JJ Johnson's "JJ" – as well as 2 great originals by Rene Thomas, who plays guitar in the quartet – "I Remember Sonny" and "Indicatif" – plus Bennett's own "Enfin".
