Kuzu (Dave Rempis/Taqshi Dorji/Tyler Damon)Purple Dark Opal ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
A tremendous single improvisation by this very hip trio – Taqshi Dorji on guitar, Tyler Damon on drums, and Dave Rempis on alto, tenor, and baritone sax! The drums have this very resonant quality at times – almost acting with elements that make up for the lack of a bass at times – while the guitar moves through more abstract sonic textures that are maybe some of the sharpest elements in the set – as Rempis blows with a beautifully soulful vibe, and really helps balance the sound, and ground the whole thing with his amazing, never-ending sense of imagination! The set features the 55 minute piece "To The Quick" – recorded live at Sugar Maple in Milwaukee. CD

Joe McPhee, Dave Rempis, Tomeka Reid, Brandon Lopez, & Paal Nilssen-LoveOf Things Beyond Thule Vol 1 (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99
The title's a reference to place once referenced by Edgar Allan Poe – but the music is very firmly grounded in reality, and comes from an improvised performance in Chicago by this very all-star ensemble! The album features one long track – "Quaanaq" – served up with really creative interplay between a quintet that features Joe McPhee on tenor and pocket trumpet, Dave Rempis on alto and baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Brandon Lopez on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – all coming together in the best tradition of Windy City free jazz players working with key out of town talent! The blend of bass and cello at the heart of the music is really wonderful, and Paal makes sure to only step forward boldly when McPhee and Rempis are ready to let loose themselves – and the trio really balance the power of their expressions to make sure that Reid and Lopez get a chance to shape some more sensitive moments. McPhee and Rempis are a great pair – very sympathetic to each other, yet very distinct too – as you'll hear on the long improvised tracks, "Osel", "Kaali", "Smola", and "Hekla". CD

Dave Rempis/Frank RosalyCodes/Myths ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy 2CDs ... $13.99
Two very well-matched musicians – taking off here in the kind of improvisations that really keep our faith in free jazz alive over the years! Dave Rempis has been on the Chicago scene for many years – but he just seems to get better and better, and more creative as the years go by – really blowing us away with the range of sounds he makes here on alto, tenor, and baritone saxes – sometimes almost swinging, sometimes in territory that feels like pure texture and sonic energy alone! Frank Rosaly is exactly the kind of drummer who can match this energy – and one who's blessed with a really wonderful ear for space between the sounds – so that he's never too bombastic or overwhelming, and instead makes these amazing contributions from a standard drum kit, plus some added percussion. The set features four long tracks, all recorded at Elastic Arts – with titles that include "Patterns In Distance", "Glitch", "Aletheia", and "Air In Between". CD

✨✧ Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

✨✧ Dave Rempis/Tomeka Reid/Joshua AbramsIthra ... CD
Aerophonic, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dave Rempis blows here with wonderful string accompaniment from two stalwarts of his Chicago scene – Joshua Abrams on bass and Tomeka Reid on cello – in a setting that has all three players resonating wonderfully together! Rempis can often create these long waves from his alto and tenor – almost as if he's bowing an instrument, which is easily echoed by the other players – but there's other passages in which all three seem to move sharply and quickly, with angles and edges that are beautiful and striking. The whole thing is a great reminder that when the right improvisers get together, they can make far more than music – as you'll hear on titles that include "Lerna", "Sister Cities", "Chorissa", "Sessile", "Sigu Tolo", "Wattle & Daub", and "Morphallaxis". ✨✧ Kuzu (Dave Rempis, Tashi Dorji, Tyler Damon)Hiljaisuus ... CD
Aerophonic, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty intense power trio from the Chicago scene – a group that features guitar from Tashi Dorji, drums and percussion from Tyler Damon, and alto, tenor, and baritone sax from the great Dave Rempis! The album features one completely sprawling improvisation – "Fontanelles" – a very long track that has these guys coming together with a sonic frenzy that's completely mindblowing – maybe not that surprising from Rempis, but with a new fire in the company of Dorji – a guitarist that we might be hearing here for the first time, and who can play with this focused energy that's only driven on more deeply by the drums of Damon! The album features another shorter track – "Gash" – but a number that's still quite open and full of energy – with an explosive middle that makes us wonder if there was anything left of the studio once these guys finished recording. ✨✧ Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams, & Arveeayl RaAphelion ... CD
Aerophonic, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A trio of tracks by a tremendous trio – the wonderfully spiritual combo of Dave Rempis on saxes, Avreeayl Ra on percussion, and Joshua Abrams on bass, small harp, and guimbri! Abrams' presence is really felt here – and his growth towards even more soulful styles in recent years seems to bring Ra's music into great focus, and give Rempis a sensitivity that goes even beyond some of his best recent material in other settings. The music is always focused with a cosmic sort of energy – often relatively free, but never too loose – and driven by a shared spirit between the players that really holds the whole thing together. Titles include "Ruah", "Soria", and "Saqiya". CD

✨✧ Dave Rempis/Josh Abrams/Avreeayl Ra/Jim BakerApsis ... CD
Aerophonic, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dave Rempis is really on fire – effortlessly blowing long-spun lines on alto, tenor, and baritone saxes – as part of a very freewheeling quartet with a old school improvising vibe! The date was recorded live at Elastic Arts in Chicago, and in some ways is a reflection of the way that space has become a hotbed for jazz creation that almost recalls the loft jazz scene of New York in the 70s – really well-matched players who are able to create in long, thoughtful progressions – often with a fair bit of force overall, given their understanding of each other's strengths from previous time together. The group features some tremendous work on bass from Joshua Abrams, richly organic work on drums from Avreeayl Ra, and very cool electronics from Jim Baker, who also plays piano – on two long improvisations, "Exedra" and "Mithrab".
