Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Kuzu (Dave Rempis/Tashi Dorji/Tyler Damon)All Your Ghosts In One Corner ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
We love the music of saxophonist Dave Rempis in just about any setting – but in recent years, the Kuzu trio has turned out to be one of Dave's greatest showcases for his talents – a really unique combo that features guitar from Tashi Dorji and drums from Tyler Damon – all coming together in ways that are very different than you might expect! Damon has this way of loosely making his way around the drum kit – almost circling it before an attack – while Dorji uses his guitar with a variety of styles – sometimes these loud single-line tones, often spaced out a bit, and sometimes completely abstracted into more distorted moments – as Rempis comes in with these focused, soulfully-blown lines that really hold the whole thing together! Dave blows alto, tenor, and baritone – and the set features material from two live performances in March of 2020 – titles that include "Year Of The Rat", "One Fell Swoop", and the three part "Scythe". Dave RempisCovid Tapes – Solos, Duos, & Trios ... CD
Aerophonic, 2021. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 18.99
Here's a case where the word "covid" doesn't have to be thought of in ways that make you shudder – as the always-inventive reedman Dave Rempis used the dark days of 2020 to find new ways of expression, and make a deeper exploration of different sides of his music! One of those sides is featured here in a series of beautiful solo performances – alto, tenor, and baritone readings of works from a variety of inspirations – Joe McPhee, Duke Ellington, Dudu Pukwana, and others – balanced with another unusual side, which is a series of outdoor performances with other musical partners, done during the summer of 2020 in a very distanced way! We're not going to say that you can "hear" the distance in the performance, but there's definitely a quality of improvising activity that's a bit different than usual – as Dave's reeds come into play with the cell of Tomeka Reid, bass of Joshua Abrams, and drums of Tim Daisy and Tyler Damon. The 2CD set does a wonderful job of presenting the material – mixing the solo tracks with the duo and trio moments – on titles that include "Glitch", "Isfahan", "Knox", "Toron", "Skin & Bones", "The Song Is You", "B My Dear", "I The Wild", and "On Green Dolphin Street". Dave Rempis/Avreeayl RaBennu (rippled sky swirl vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Aerophonic, 2021. New Copy ... $20.99
We always love the work of saxophonist Dave Rempis in a relatively spare setting – and here, he sounds even more amazing than usual – working next to drummer Avreeayl Ra, in a mode that's got a wonderfully organic, spontaneous quality – one that maybe makes for some of the most spiritual work we've ever heard from Rempis on record! Dave blows both tenor and alto – and Ra's work on drums is often very open and loose – still rhythmic mostly, but occasionally freer – and especially captivating at points when he uses mallets on the toms, and picks up other percussion instruments too – giving Rempis this earthy backdrop that really opens up new textures and tones in his horn! Wonderful stuff throughout – and titles include "Divisions Of Time", "Fire & Ash", and "Persea". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Rempis/Elisabeth Harnik/Michael ZerangAstragaloi ... CD
Aerophonic, 2022. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
There's a great sense of "room" in this recording – the echoey space at a festival in Austria where these three great improvisers performed the material in the set – almost as if they were using the setting of the concert as a fourth sort of sonic element in the mix! That's definitely the case with the piano of Elisabeth Harnik, which has this moody tone that draws from the room and folds it back onto the keys – while Dave Rempis explores the further reaches of the space with these brilliant instant creations on both alto and tenor sax – as Michael Zerang again proves why he can be such a sensitive percussionist in the right sort of lineup! The album's definitely another feather in the mighty full cap of Dave Rempis – and titles include "Goat's Thorn", "Locoweed", "Milkvetch", "Macateta", and "Lafo Litupa". CD

✨✧ Dave Rempis/Jeff Parker/Ingebrigt Haker Flaten/Jeremy CunninghamStringers & Struts ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
An amazing little session – the kind of performance that can make free improvisation such a mindblowing thing when its handled by musicians this great! The date marks a strong return by guitarist Jeff Parker to the farther reaches of his sound – working here alongside the alto, tenor, and baritone saxes of Dave Rempis – as an effortless pair who seem to not only really get each other, but also find ways to make the sorts of sounds that each make the other musician sound even better than they otherwise might! Ingebrigt Haker Flaten is superb, as always, on bass – and Jeremy Cunningham really keeps up with the rest on drums – which sometimes means stepping back a bit to let the sound build. Titles include "Cutwater", "Harmany", and "Caviste". CD

✨✧ Dave Rempis/Joshua Abrams/Avreeayl Ra/Jim BakerScylla ... CD
Aerophonic, 2022. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautifully spiritual work from this wonderful Chicago group – a set that's maybe more in the vibe of some of the more recent recordings by Joshua Abrams than some of the other members of the group – but in a way that really shows the depths of the others' playing! Dave Rempis creates all these incredible sounds on alto, tenor, and baritone – and Jim Baker adds in some very cool electronics next to his piano work – but maybe the most well-suited match for Abrams' energy is percussionist Avreeayl Ra, who handles mbira, wooden flute, and additional percussion next to his drums. The set begins with the short "Survivors" tune – then moves into two very long improvisations, "Between A Rock" and "Viscosity". CD

✨✧ Rempis Percussion Quartet (Dave Rempis/Ingebrigt Haker Flaten/Tim Daisy/Frank Rosaly)Sud Des Alpes ... CD
Aerophonic, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really great setting for the sublime reed talents of Dave Rempis – a special quartet that features two drummers, Tim Daisy and Frank Rosaly, plus bass from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten! Despite the name of the group, the sound here isn't an all-out percussion bombast – and instead, the players really let the fantastic soundshapes of Rempis guide their way – as Dave plays both alto and tenor saxes, and opens the door to much larger sonic exploration on the album's three long tracks. The group take on a great moment from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – borrowing a bit of "Theme De Yoyo", which they fold into their own "Evacuation" – next to other tracks titled "There's A Jam On The Line" and "Late Arrival". ✨✧ Chicago Reed Quartet (Rempis/Vandermark)Western Automatic ... CD
Aerophonic, 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different group than the sort of saxophone quartet you might remember from the 80s – one that's filled with fire, and really shows the evolution of the reed ensemble over the past few decades! All players here are very skilled improvisers on their own – Dave Rempis, Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams, and Nick Mazzarella – and they come together at a level that still holds onto some of the restructured approach of the sax quartet, but which also feels free to open up, too – so that some passages have this very improvised vibe, yet never in a way that has the players getting in each others' way or getting too far off course – always with this amazing sense of cohesion that shows how great all the musicians can work together. Instrumentation includes alto, tenor, soprano, sopranino, and baritone saxes – plus clarinet and bass clarinet as well. Titles include "Detroit Fields", "The Rush", "Broken Record Fugue", "Burn Unit", and "Remnant". CD

✨✧ Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams, & Arveeayl RaAphelion ... CD
Aerophonic, 2013. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of tracks by a tremendous trio – the wonderfully spiritual combo of Dave Rempis on saxes, Avreeayl Ra on percussion, and Joshua Abrams on bass, small harp, and guimbri! Abrams' presence is really felt here – and his growth towards even more soulful styles in recent years seems to bring Ra's music into great focus, and give Rempis a sensitivity that goes even beyond some of his best recent material in other settings. The music is always focused with a cosmic sort of energy – often relatively free, but never too loose – and driven by a shared spirit between the players that really holds the whole thing together. Titles include "Ruah", "Soria", and "Saqiya". CD
