Oliver NelsonFull Nelson ... LP
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Excellent work from one of our favorite arrangers! Nelson was a super-hip super-soulful genius who crafted some of the best charts in the 60s. He managed to work in a great amount of jazz where other arrangers would leave things cold – and on a record like this he manages to make a large group swing really nicely in a very confined space. His own work on alto dominates the record, but the groups backing him up include Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, Clark Terry, Romeo Penque, and Jimmy Raney – many of whom manage to sneak in some nice sharp solo moments. Titles include "Back Woods", "Full Nelson", "Skokiaan", "Majorca", "Miss Fine", "Paris Blues", and "Lilia's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Japanese stereo pressing – 23MJ 3407 – with insert. Cover has a light smudge from sticker removal.)

✨✧ Anita O'DayAnita O'Day Swings Cole Porter With Billy May ... LP
Verve, 1959. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Something of an addition to the Verve "songbook" mode of the 50s – but it's also one that's a lot more dynamic than the others, thanks to some very jazzy arrangements from Billy May! The groove here is very upbeat and jazzy – hard-swinging in the manner that May forged with Sinatra over at Capitol, with lots of twists and turns in the backings that really help transform the tunes! Anita's dynamic vocals really match the spirit of the arrangements – and soar out with a quality that's some of her best and boldest at Verve. Titles include "I Love You", "Get Out Of Town", "Just One Of Those Things", "Easy To Love", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", and "Love For Sale". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese stereo pressing – 23MJ 3191 – with obi and insert. Cover has some spotty aging in back.)

✨✧ Chet BakerSings & Plays With Bud Shank, Russ Freeman, & Strings ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A classic album of vocal tracks from Chet Baker – one that elevates the sound of his earlier small group work with some added backings on some tracks – all at a level that continues the new level of sophistication that Baker brought to jazz on his first few recordings! The mid 50s set is overflowing with key performances from Chet, both on vocals and trumpet – and the core group features wonderful work on piano from Russ Freeman, and this great use of flute by Bud Shank – which seems to underscore some of the moodier currents in Baker's music. Some tracks feature larger arrangements that really elevate the proceedings – handled by Johnny Mandel, Marty Paich, and Frank Campo – and the album's classic Chet all the way through – cool but fragile – summed up in the set's perfect take on the stone classic "Lets Get Lost" – plus titles that include "Just Friends", "Grey December", "I Remember You", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I Wish I Knew", and "Daybreak". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese King pressing, with insert! K23P 6703M)

✨✧ Lee KonitzVery Cool ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A slightly different album than usual for Lee Konitz in the 50s – one that's got a bit harder edge, and which has Lee working in a group with a trumpet! The set's performed by a quintet that includes Konitz usual suspects Sal Mosca on piano and Peter Ind on bass, along with Shadow Wilson on drums and Don Ferrara on trumpet. Ferrara's presence in the group gives the tunes a bit more of a punch than usual for a Konitz album of the period, and Lee responds by getting a bit edgier on some of his solo work – never too modern, and still "cool" enough to be in keeping with the title – but with a more unsettled sound that we like a lot! Titles include "Sunflower", "Movin Around", "Kary's Trance", "Crazy She Calls me", and "Billie's Bounce". Great cover, too, with Lee looking out through a bunch of ice! LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Very Cool (SHMCD pressing) ... CD 14.99
