Wardell GrayShades Of Gray (aka Way Out Wardell) ... LP
Custom/United, 1948. Very Good ... $2.99
Seminal sounds from the LA scene of the late 40s – one of the most important records to showcase the tenor talents of the legendary Wardell Gray – a key player on the harder side of the west coast for its formative bop years – and one whose career was cut short all too soon! The material here really shows that strong LA tradition of fervent jam session work – recorded here with Gray alongside additional tenor from Vido Musso – plus guitar from Barney Kessel and Irving Ashby, trumpet from Ernie Royal and Howard McGhee, trombone from Vic Dickenson, piano from Arnold Ross and Erroll Garner, and bass from Red Callender and Harry Babison. Tracks are nice and long – with plenty of room for Gray to show of his solo talents – and titles include "Tenderly", "Blue Lou", "Just You Just Me", and "One O'Clock Jump". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo yellow label pressing. Cover has some wear & aging, light staining and splitting on the bottom.)

Joe WilliamsGreatest! – Count Basie Plays & Joe Williams Sings Standards ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $2.99 4.99
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers well. Titles include "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "A Fine Romance", "This Can't Be Love", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and "There Will Never Be Another You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese Polydor pressing, UMV 2650. Cover has light edge wear, light surface wear.)

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinBackgrounds For Brando ... LP
Dot, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare session recorded by Elmer Bernstein in tribute of Marlon Brando's key 50s appearances in film! The album is not so much a soundtrack, as it is a collection of tracks from Brando films – written by Franz Waxman, Leith Stevens, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, and others – all redone by Bernstein in a style that links together disparate themes nicely. The album features variations on themes from the films The Men, Guys & Dolls, On The Waterfront, Viva Zapata, Sayonara, and Streetcar Named Desire. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Mad Cobra & Prince JazzboGoldmine – Dubbed Out By Prince Jazzbo ... LP
333 (UK), 1993. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool take on the Goldmine album from Mad Cobra – one that still has the bristle of digital dancehall elements at the core, but also really slows down and dubs out in a mighty nice way! Prince Jazzbo's touches echo both a late 70s Jamaican mode, and maybe some of the headier On-U elements of the following decade – while always keeping things spacious, and often reworking the vocals into these refrains that flow again and again in a very hypnotic way! Titles include "Acid Dub", "Dubbing In A Goldmine", "Tease You Dub", "Middle Dub", "Fulfillment Dub", "A Vexful Dub", "Fresh Fresh Dub", and "Woman Love Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ RevolutionariesMeditation In Dub ... LP
Flames/333 (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully moody dubs served up by The Revolutionaries – material that was ostensibly originally recorded to back up the vocals of singer Winston Jones, but which works here as a fantastic set of instrumentals on their own! The music is heavy on rhythms from Sly and Robbie – working here with a heady style in the years before their big international fame – on grooves that have all these cool echoey guitar and keyboard bits that ring out with wonderfully spacey energy! Titles include "Meditation Dub", "Peaceful Natty", "Natty Chase The Barber", "Political Affair", "War Mongrel", "Trod On Natty", and "Move Out Of Me Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tony Randall & Jack KlugmanOdd Couple Sings ... LP
London, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Terrible! But pretty darn wonderful, too – at least if you dig The Odd Couple! Considering their roots in Broadway, Randall and Klugman should be pretty decent singers – but instead, they decide to camp it up for this one, as they spend a lot of time arguing about and during sweet old-fashioned tunes like "The Inch Worm", "Johnny One Note", "Brush Up Your Shakespeare", and "Together Wherever We Go" – plus a very groovy version of "You're So Vain". The record also features the extended "Odd Couple Opera", the track "Friendship', and "Applause, Applause". Arrangements by Brit Roland Shaw – probably because nobody in America would touch the record, and an Englishman like Shaw hadn't heard of the show yet! In a great gatefold cover, too. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a CRC sticker on the back and is great!)

✨✧ Robert WyattEnd Of An Ear ... LP
CBS (UK), 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Early solo genius from Robert Wyatt – a key set recorded before his tragic career-changing accident – and one that has him playing drums, piano, and organ! There's a bit more Soft Machine here than on the mellower, later Wyatt solo sets – and the record features excellent jazz-based contributions from players that include Mark Charig on cornet and Elton Dean on alto and saxello! Tunes are relatively abstract in parts, with a strong percussive element – almost more like groups that Wyatt influenced heavily in later years – such as This Heat or Tortoise – and the set's a great reminder of the place from which Robert started – a record that already would have been enough, even without all his later contributions to music. Titles include "To Nick Everyone", "To Mark Everywhere", "To Oz Alien Daevyd & Gilly", and "To The Old World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugh MaddoPop Style ... LP
Jamaazima/333 (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's nothing pop about this record – as the set's an obscure 80s digital date, recorded at Aquarius Studios, issued on a tiny American label, and a great reminder that there were still plenty of homegrown sounds during these years of big reggae success – as long as you knew where to look! Hugh Maddo takes things nice and easy, as do the rhythms – so that there's no too-full dancehall rhythms for the dancefloor, and instead this vibe that recalls much more of the 70s spirit of Kingston, especially work from the smaller labels. Titles include "Give Me The Sensie", "Everywhere You Go In This World", "Take Bribe", "Budget", "Baby Don't Go", "Country Girl", "Pop Style", and "Jah Jah". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oscar PettifordFinest Of Oscar Pettiford (aka Another One) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the Another One title make you think this is some passable record that repeats earlier ideas – because the set is a real gem in the 50s catalog of bassist Oscar Pettiford, and one of his strongest dates as a leader! Pettiford really sparkles here – leading a great group that features key 50s modernists like Gigi Gryce on alto, Jerome Richardson on tenor, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, and Donald Byrd on trumpet – all tightly arranged at most moments, but given enough space on the set to strike out and state their own ideas. Pettiford's bass is wonderfully upfront in the mix, leading off most tunes with a nice sense of force – and titles include some really wonderful original material – like "Oscalypso", "Don't Squawk", "Bohemia After Dark", "Minor Seventh Heaven", and "Kamman's A Comin". ✨✧ Sydney Joe QuallsSo Sexy ... LP
20th Century, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible blend of southern and modern soul – the second album by soul songwriter Sydney Joe Qualls, recorded in both Chicago and Muscle Shoals, with a stone mellow sound that's outta site! The groove here is extremely well-done – tight, but never too slick – and with a soaring quality that marks the best late 70s soul coming out of Chicago at the time, but which also has some rootsier vocals from Sydney. The album's a classic for the standout groover "I Don't Do This" – but the whole thing's pretty darn great, and tracks include "Bad Risk", "I'll Run To Your Side", "Let the Woman Know", "I Could Be So Good For You", and "Where Have You Been". ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineZT's Blues ... LP
Blue Note, 1961/1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great lost session by Stan The Man – recorded in the early 60s when he was doing some of his best work, but not issued by Blue Note until the mid 80s! The album stands right up there with other Blue Note gems of the time – especially albums like Comin Your Way and Jubilee Shout, both of which also had to wait many years to be discovered – and Turrentine's got all the bold, raspy tones we love in his youthful horn – a sense of phrasing and energy that's quite different than his later years. The group on the record helps keep the vibe a lot – with some excellent guitar from Grant Green, always a great one on a date like this – plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The interplay between Green and Turrentine is wonderful – even before they start soloing – and titles include "ZT's Blues", "Be My Love", "The Lamp Is Low", and "The Way You Look Tonight". Albert AylerSomething Different ... LP
Bird Notes (Sweden), 1962. Sealed ... $9.99
Early work by avant saxophone genius Albert Ayler – and very very striking! The setting is very spare, with only bass and drums backing Ayler up – and the way the album is mixed, Ayler's solos dominate the tracks in a way that isn't always the case with some of the more group-driven later work. His tone is amazing even in this early date of 1962 – and he completely blows away the other two players on the set, drummer Sune Spangberg and bassist Torbjorn Hulcrantz. The set was first recorded by the small Swedish label Bird Notes, and it's the beginning of a longtime love affair that Swedish modernists had with Ayler's tone and playing – a love affair that runs up to the current avant garde that includes Mats Gustafsson. Includes a mindblowing reworking of "I'll Remember April", plus versions of "Rollins Tune", "Tune Up", and Ayler's own "Free". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent EU reissue on Survival Research – still sealed with hype sticker.)

AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! The record's got plenty of sweet electric keyboards over smooth funky basslines – and as the years go by, the band's white boy vocals don't sound nearly as bad as we remember them. And besides, when they play their instruments so nicely – how can you hold the singing against them? Includes the killer classic "Pick Up The Pieces", sampled more times than we can remember – plus "You Got It", "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Person To Person", and a nice remake of the Isley Brothers' "Work To Do". A sweet set from the digital generation, but one that shows that the best spirit of the roots reggae years were alive and well in the music of a singer like Horace Ferguson! Horace has this gently grooving style that's mighty nice – up in the higher range of the spectrum, which almost seems to bring a more human, youthful quality to his presentation of the message-oriented lyrics – all backed with production from Prince Jazzbo, who keeps things nice and lean in a mix of rhythms, basslines, and keyboards! A sweetly soulful set from Robert Ffrench – a completely self-produced set, which seems to give the whole thing a very down to earth vibe – especially given its release in the middle of the digital dancehall generation! There's certainly elements in the music that link it to that moment – especially the electric rhythms and keyboards – but there's a very personal approach to the record that recalls some of the more intimate modes of the lovers generation, and some of the more earnest, soulful expressions of the decade before! The whole thing's great – a rare gem that really deserves the attention its warranted in critical circles over the years – with titles that include "You Are So Special", "Heartbreaker", "I Can't Finance You", "Sweet Sixteen", "Give Me Your Love", and "I Am Wondering". Haunting music composed to accompany the trippy Labyrinthe at Expo '67 in Montreal. Supposedly, the Labyrinthe was this wild maze of shapes, sounds, film images, and music with kind of a political twist to it. Rathburn's music includes a lot of electronic bits, and the sound shifts around a lot to move with the maze's different themes like "The Universe Spins On the Point Of My Head" or "The Wind In My Hand". A killer set from Freddie Hubbard's legendary years on CTI! Like the classic Red Clay album, there's 4 tunes here, all longer cuts – where everyone gets a chance to stretch out a bit, over smooth (but not too smooth!) electric grooves, supported by great orchestrations from Don Sebesky! Ron Carter & Billy Cobham provide a tight but elastic rhythmic underpinning – a great foil for solos by players who include Keith Jarrett on electric piano, George Benson on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, and Freddie himself on trumpet. Airto & Ray Barretto are on percussion, with some nice percolating accents to the grooves – and titles include the classic "Povo", an oft-sampled monster – plus "In A Mist", "The Godfather", and "Sky Dive". Nimbus, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's the legendary Horace Tapscott at the piano on the cover, and he's doing a fantastic job here, working with this equally legendary set of musicians from the LA scene of the 70s – as they stretch out in a tremendous performance that appears here for the first time ever! Tapscott was always at his most spiritual when working with the Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra – and the long tracks here are filled with the kind of energy you might hear from the Strata East scene on the east coast, but with some slightly sharper edges at times – served up by a lineup that includes Jesse Sharps on soprano, Sabir Mateen and James Andrews on tenors, Michael Session on alto, Kafi Roberts on flute, David Bryant and Alan Hines on basses, and Everett Brown on drums. As you can imagine with the reed setup like that, the album's full of rich colors and tones, then gives way to very strong individual moments of expression – and the set also features a bit of spoken word from Kamau Daaood as well. Titles include a version of the Stanley Cowell tune "Departure", plus "Macrame", "Dial B For Barbara", "Mykowski's First Fifth", and "Lift Every Voice". CD

Tapscott is great in a trio or solo – but we really love him when he's able to direct his spirit towards a like-minded group of musicians – something he definitely does here at the helm of a fantastic lineup that features the flutes of Adele Sebastian and Kafi Roberts, alto clarinet of Herbert Callies, tuba of Red Callender, trombone of Lester Robertson, basses of David Bryant and Alan Hines, congas of Daoude Woods, and triple tenors of James Andrews, Sabir Mateen, and Billie Harris! The mighty Horace Tapscott is at the lead of the group on piano – and the list of other players is almost an all-star lineup from the hipper corners of the LA scene of the time – Billie Harris on soprano sax, Sabir Mateen on tenor, Adele Sebasian and Aubrey Hart on flutes, Lester Robinson on trombone, Everett Brown on drums, and Daoude Woods on congas – plus double basses, from Alan Hines and David Bryant – who create a wonderfully rhythmic vibe at the core! The set begins with a superb reading of "Village Dance", which is driven by the basses with lots of modal energy – the moves into other great compositions by Tapscott and Jesse Sharps – readings of "Song Of Emanon", "Sea Wife", "Dee Bee's Dance", and "Mykowski's First Fifth". The Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra steps out here in a very large version of the ensemble – led by the great Horace Tapscott on piano, and stretching out on some very long tunes that are filled with strong solo work from different members of the group! Key players include Adele Sebastian and Aubrey Hart on flute, Desta Walker and Sabir Mateen on tenor, Billie Harris on soprano sax, Louis Spears on cello, Lester Robertson on trombone, Johnny Williams on baritone, and Tapscott on piano – most of whom are musicians you might know from the classic set of Nimbus label material from the LA scene at the time. The vibe here is maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sun Ra and his Arkestra – and this release, like others in the series, marks the first time this music is available to the public! Beautifully righteous work from this legendary ensemble – and a performance that features vocal work from both Linda Hill and Adele Sebastian – better known as instrumentalists with records on Nimbus from the time, but artists whose voices really bring a special sort of soul to the session! The singers are used with occasional currents that really open up the music – a bit in the way that Billy Gault used vocals on his classic album for Steeplechase – and the instrumentation is equally sublime, with piano from group leader Horace Tapscott and Hill, tenors from Sabir Mateen and Billie Harris, flute from Sebastian, baritone from Johnny Williams, and trombone from Lester Robertson – plus a trio of bassists, Roberto Miranda, Alan Hines, and David Bryant. The set begins with "Equinox" and moves into a Coltrane medley – then includes "Lift Every Voice", "Speedy Mike", "Come Sunday", "Leland's Song", and "A Call For Truth" – plus a version of "Song For My Father" with an unnamed male singer performing the lyrics by Leon Thomas. A bit more of a stripped-down set than other work that Benny Sings has given us in recent years – definitely a record with the vibe of the beat tape promised in the title – but one that still has some of the soulful elements that Benny's given us on other records too! The hip hop element is stronger here than usual, right down to the record's guests – who include Koreatown Oddity, Cola Boyy, Mocky, St Panther, Rae Khalil, and others – and Benny put the album together out of elements that weren't used in the final version of his album Music – but which still carry some of the soulful currents of that set. Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1957. Used ... $2.99
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". Includes bonus alternate takes of "Evidence", "Blue Monk", and "I Mean You". CD

Roadshow/Robinsongs (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99 39.99
An incredible legacy of funk – from a group who were easily one of the tightest, sharpest acts in the mainstream soul scene of the 70s! BT Express are a combo who pre-date disco, and whose grooves went a long way towards forging the blueprint for that mid 70s movement – but their music also never went the way of the easy crossover hit, or the cliched mode of pop disco production – as the second half of the 70s only seemed to have the group digging in their heels and sounding even funkier than ever! Compression is the key to the BT Express sound – an ability to bring together many different elements and lay them down right on the money together – focusing things so that the complexity of their instrumentation is often understated, even though it's the quality that makes their grooves so great! This massive 4CD package focuses on their material for the Roadshow label up to 1980 – and includes all the key cuts, album material, and other gems too – a massive 61 tracks in all, with titles that include "Give Up The Funk", "Closer", "Shout It Out", "I Want You With Me", "Shake It Off", "Have Some Fun", "It's Got To Be You", "Star Child", "The Door To My Mind", "Star Gazer", "Depend On Yourself", "Can't Stop Groovin Now", "Discotizer", "Still Good Still Like It", "Peace Pipe", "This House Is Smokin", "Express", "If It Don't Turn You On", "Once You Get It", "Do You Like It", "That's What I Want For You Baby", "Scratch My Itch", "Eyes, and lots lots more! Wicked early 80s punk from The Flesh Eaters – with some fun nods to trash culture and B-movies in the cover art, song titles and lyrical imagery – but it's also some of most slyly ambitious sounds from the west coast scene of the time! It's clear from the first track they're going for something more instrumentally adventurous than others at the time, with sax and off kilter hand percussion all over it – but Chris D's vision and caterwauling presence as front man keeps it nice and raucous. Wendell HarrisonOrganic Dream ... LP
Wenha/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 36.99
A weird and wonderful album from Tribe Records giant Wendell Harrison – an obscure electric set from the start of the 80s! There's still a strongly spiritual feel on the record, but Wendell also adds some Fender Rhodes and vocals to his work on tenor and flute – bringing in the same sort of spacey soul vibe you'd find on work from the time by Oneness Of Juju! The overall sound is still quite soulful – a great extension of the early Tribe spirit from Detroit – and some cuts feature a bit more acoustic piano and sweet earthy percussion. Other cuts have more of a soulful bounce – thanks to vocals from Miche Braden and Kathy Simmons – and titles include "The Wok", "Ginseng Love", "Love Juice", "A Green Meadow" and "Peace of Mind". Venus (Japan), 2002. Used ... $14.99 22.99
Scott Hamilton and Eddie Higgins are a pretty great pair together – as you'll hear on this recent date for Japan's Venus Records! Hamilton's got a lot of tradition in his horn, and Higgins a fair bit in his piano too – although Eddie's way of shaping a tune is also very much his own thing in these later years, and that sense of sound really helps Scott find a freshness in his tenor that we might not expect! Tunes are a mix of smokey ballads and a few gentle swingers – and titles include "Night & Day", "Embraceable You", "Russian Lullaby", "My Foolish Heart", "The More I See You", and "Skylark". CD

Michael Hudson-CasanovaAnimus (grey vinyl pressing) ... LP
Passerine, 2023. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Michael Hudson Casanova is a saxophonist, but the sound of the record draws equally strongly from the contributions of Erik Skov's guitar – a player whose sense of color is balanced wonderfully by the sharper edges of the saxophone – then given some nice structure through the work on drums by Gustavo Cortinas Fouilloux! The work on the record has a slow-building, spacious vibe – maybe not too far from contemporary ECM, but a lot warmer overall – thanks in part to the very expressive sounds of the leader – a player who can cover a lot of ground, but all without going outside – and never in a way that's showy or calls too much attention to itself. James Davis joins the group on trumpet on one track – and titles include "The Now", "Animus", "Infinite Perspective", "Continuum", "Etude For Clementine", "What If Everything Is Not Enough", and "Recycle". Marina/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
A modern soul classic – and the first album recorded by 70s mellow soul maestro Al Johnson, a great artist whose lent his talents to countless others over the years! The sound is incredibly tight and plenty darn soulful – very much in the spirit of mid 70s classics by Leroy Hutson, Ronnie McNeir, and Leon Ware – with a massively personal approach that hits hard on both the groovers and the mellower cuts. There's a style here that's nicely rougher than that on Al's better-known album for Columbia – but one that shows that he can still cook up impeccable tunes without a major label budget for production! Titles include the great groover "I've Got My Second Wind", plus "Let's Go Home Together", "Peaceful", "Come Check Out This Love", and "Let Me Love You". CD

Volker KriegelWith A Little Help From My Friends ... LP
Liberty/Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. Sealed ... $19.99
A great and groovy early album from Volker Kriegel – the German guitarist who'd cut some very trippy work for the MPS label in the 70s – but a player who steps out here in a sweet soul jazz mode at the end of the 60s! Volker's still got the same wickedly sharp style on guitar you'd know from his later fame – but here, it's turned towards the kind of soulful guitar work you'd hear on Verve Records at the time – somewhere in the territory of George Benson, or maybe a bit in that of Wes Montgomery – but also with some occasional freewheeling moments that hint at the changes to come! The group's a trio on side one – with Peter Trunk on bass and Cees See on drums – but side two moves into wilder material with a quartet that features vibes by Claudio Szenkar, who adds in just the kind of psychedelic touches to really make the music open up! These cuts are much more modal, and show Kriegel's growing love of Eastern sounds – and titles include "Na Na Imboro", "Morandi", "Interpunctuation", "Traffic Jam", and "With A Little Help From My Friends". Lightmen Plus OneEnergy Control Center (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Lightin/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. Used ... $14.99
Cosmic jazzy genius from Bubbha Thomas & The Lightmen – the kind of a record that sounds like it should have come out of Detroit or Chicago in the early 70s – and not the Texas scene from which the group hailed! The Lightmen have a vibe that reminds us a lot of The Pharoahs or some of the Tribe Records collective – a willingness to mix free-thinking jazz expression with tighter grooves and funkier rhythms – stepping out in an instrumental vibe that still has plenty of funky 45 touches, but which also sits nicely alongside the most cosmic work coming out from Impulse at the time! The title cut "Energy Control Center" has an electric spacey quality that reminds us of Sun Ra at his best – and other tunes soar out with a brilliant post-Coltrane sense of freedom evident in work on saxes, flute, and piano. Titles include "Wench", "Cold Bair", "Leo", "Jupiter's Child", and "The Phantom". CD

Brightly sparkling sounds from trumpeter Brian Lynch – working here in a great partnership with pianist Emmet Cohen, who proves to be a perfect pairing for the album! The duo have a rock-solid rhythm core – the mighty Billy Hart on drums and Boris Kozlov on bass – and together, the quartet soars right out of the gate – hitting a magnificent flow on a set of numbers that includes a fair bit of original compositions by the leaders. The tunes are nicely balanced, too – so that the straightforward numbers are rounded out by more complicated lyrical moments – really showing the depth of talent from Lynch and Cohen. Duke PearsonRight Touch (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1967. Used ... $14.99
One of the hippest sets that Duke Pearson ever recorded – and an all-out Blue Note soul jazz set that's even better than Pearson's classic Sweet Honey Bee! Duke's style is deeper and more farther-reaching here – with echoes of styles used at the time by Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan – carried off with some of the more tightly-arranged modes used by Pearson on his backdrops for other players at the time. The group here includes James Spaulding on alto, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jerry Dodgion on alto and flute, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Garnett Brown on trombone, and rhythm by Gene Taylor on bass and Grady Tate on drums. Tracks have a strong overall focus on the groove – rolling around in that rollicking mid 60s Blue Note style that Pearson helped establish as the label's trademark at the time – but titles are also touched with some of Duke's lighter lyricism, especially on his own solos. Titles include "Make It Good", "Chili Peppers", "Rotary", "Los Malos Hombres", and "Scrap Iron". CD

Modern Harmonic, Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $13.99 16.98
Never-issued performances from Sun Ra and his legendary Arkestra – recorded live at Slugs in New York, and featuring the group in two very different modes! Side one features "Calling Planet Earth/We'll Wait For You" – from the same performance that also gave the world the Universe In Blue album – but presented with a very wild, freely improvised sound! The tune runs for well over 20 minutes, and features lots of shifts in presence and power from the individual instruments – with some especially great bass clarinet from Eloe Omoe, who takes a great solo – as well as work from John Gilmore on tenor, Danny Davis on alto, Ronnie Boykins on bass, and Kwame Hadi on trumpet. June Tyson also sings a bit – although the instrumental passages are the strongest draw. The remaining two tracks are much more in the Strange Strings sound of the group – although maybe looser and freer than the work on that album – as they feature mostly stringed instruments, from a variety of global sources, mixed with some woodwind elements and a bit of percussion – almost with a vibe that's like the mid 50s Moondog discovering free jazz! Titles for these two tracks include "Moonshots Across The Sky" and "Thunder Of The Gods". CD

Blue Note, 1964. Used ... $4.99
An album of incredible beauty – and one of the key early sides that Shorter cut for Blue Note! It's nearly impossible to describe the genius of these records without playing them – and upon playing, all words disappear in the brilliance of Shorter's incredible tone, solo imagination, and writing! There's a nascent soulfulness here that would emerge quite strongly across the field of jazz in the late 60s and early 70s – bubbling forth here on the session, with a sound that we could only call Shorter-archetypal – and return to again and again over the years, as proof that few players ever measured up as greatly at such a young age! The group's a quintet with Herbie Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the set list includes "Speak No Evil", "Infant Eyes", "Witch Hunt", and "Wild Flower". Nancy SinatraNancy Sinatra – Start Walkin 1965 to 1976 ... LP
Light In The Attic, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Maybe the grooviest collection of work we've ever seen from the lovely Nancy Sinatra – a set that features some of her hits, but also includes a lot more material that's much more obscure – and which shows that Nancy was a hell of a song stylist, far from the charts! The core of the work features Sinatra's fantastic collaborations with Lee Hazlewood – the producer who created a darkness in her sound that moved her far from simple pop – and who sometimes joined her in duets, with a mature, adult quality that was dripping with sensuality! The set also features some post-Hazlewood material, too – still very cool, and very groovy – a sublime blend of Cali 60s elements and slight country touches. Titles include "So Long Babe", "Sugar Town", "Kind Of Woman", "Machine Gun Kelly", "Arkansas Coal", "Down From Dover", "How Are Things In California", "Some Velvet Morning", "Hello LA Bye Bye Birmingham", "Hook & Ladder", "Happy", "You Only Live Twice", "Sand", "Lightning's Girl", "How Does That Grab You", "Paris Summer", "Jackson", "Lady Bird", and, of course, "These Boots Are Made For Walking". Jimmy SmithHome Cookin ... LP
Blue Note, Early 60s. Very Good ... $36.99 48.99
One of the key classics from the Jimmy Smith years at Blue Note Records – a really groundbreaking time for the Hammond organ in jazz, as Jimmy helped take it from backrooms in bars to center stage of jazz with a record like this! The album's about as iconic as you can get for Jimmy at the label – from the fantastic cover image, to the well-crafted tunes – many of which are shorter than some of Smith's earlier jam session-styled work, and help forge a bridge between soul jazz and the emerging soul instrumental sound of the early 60s. The album features some excellent work from the obscure Percy France on tenor on most of the tracks – a player we only know from a handful of dates – next to other quartet members who include Kenny Burrell on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums. Titles include "Sugar Hill", "I Got A Woman", "Motoring Along", "Gracie", and "Messin Around". LP, Vinyl record album

Deram, 1967. Near Mint- ... $19.99 29.99
The great first album from Ten Years After – recorded at a time when the group were maybe more strongly linked to the bluesy sounds of the beat group generation than in later years – although still with a hint of some of the trippy touches to come! There's a surprisingly strong dedication to American blues roots at many moments – not just on some of the songs by Sonny Boy Williamson or Willie Dixon – but, maybe thanks to producer Mike Vernon, or more likely the genius of Alvin Lee, the guitars are already getting a bit fuzzy at times, and the keyboards have some unusual tones that you never would have heard on the south side of Chicago. Titles include "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes", "Spoonful", "Feel It For Me", "Help Me", "Adventures Of A Young Organ", "I Want To Know", and "Losing The Dogs". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most striking of the Toquinho/Vinicius De Moraes pairings of the 70s – thanks to the presence of some added "amigos" who really help push the sound of the set – and make for a richer, more fully-voiced presentation of the wonderful lyrics of Vinicius! The album's still done in the bossa mode that the pair crafted on other 70s records, but there's a feel here that's a bit more ambitious overall – and the presence of new voices and added instrumentation really helps break from previous patterns. Guests include Maria Bethania, Ciro Monteiro, Maria Creuza, and Chico Buarque – and titles include "Apelo", "Que Martirio", "Voce Errou", "Samba Da Rosa", "Tomara", and "Desencontro". El (UK), Late 1940s/1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99 34.99
A set with an unusual sort of flavor – one that looks at the influence of Spanish culture on modern music during the postwar years – brought together here in a mix of jazz and classical recordings with some very different styles! CD1 is all jazz – and showcases some key Spanish-themed projects – most notably the famous Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaborations, but also work by John Coltrane and Django Reinhardt too – music that maybe adapts Spanish classical themes for the modern idiom. CD2 dives more into the realm of classical – and features work by both French and Spanish composers with very vivid sonic imagery – longer pieces by Ravel, Debussy, and De Falla – heard here in classic recordings. CD3 is a bit more intimate, and features a range of classical themes, but with more up-close performance – often classical guitar, played by Sabicas, Julian Bream, and others – but sometimes with piano, and in one case a woodwind quintet. 37 tracks in all – with a detailed booklet of notes! Prestige, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A definite soul summit for the time – with 3 top-shelf players in the lead, all getting plenty of room to do their thing! Both Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt are on tenor in the front, working with the respect and confidence they'd forged together on other co-led sessions from the time – and Jack McDuff's a great addition to the set, playing Hammond with his newly-lean tone, and really helping things move along nicely. Drummer Charlie Persip has a nicely booming style here – one that gets the group out of the box from the get-go, and McDuff's handling all the bass work on the organ, which always makes for a tight rhythmic romp! Most tunes are in that great raw Prestige mode from the old days, as you'd guess by titles like "Tubby", "Dumplin", and "Shuffle Twist" – alongside other numbers that include "Sleeping Susan" and "Out In The Cold Again". The album follows heavily on the heels of Getz's brilliant Captain Marvel set – mixing together electric rhythms and some wonderfully open-minded blowing, in a sound that shows that Stan was still truly growing as an artist during this time. The double LP setting of the album makes for some great long tracks – really stretching out with Stan blowing in that strange and wonderful mix of Coltrane and Ben Webster he had going at the time, and featuring some nice keyboard work by Andy Laverne. Strata East/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An essential bit of 70s soul jazz – a real standout in both the catalogs of tenorist Clifford Jordan, and the Stata East label! This is one of those few records where every element is perfect, and all players rise together to a new level of expression – and we'd easily rank this one right up there with John Coltrane's Love Supreme or Pharoah Sanders' Kharma for sheer magnitude of sound and message! Clifford Jordan is at the height of his tenor powers – cutting sharp lines, stretching out his notes, and hitting all these dark edges that had never appeared in his work – and the rest of the group is great too – with Stanley Cowell on piano, Bill Lee on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Higgins is amazing, and gives the set a sort of lyrical freeplay that makes Jordan's hard solos come alive in a magical way – and Cedar Walton also plays piano on a few numbers, pushing things forward with the sense of warmth and imagination that always made him a treat in the 70s! Every cut's a winner, and the set list includes "John Coltrane", "Alias Buster Henry", "Glass Bead Games", "Biskit", and "Bridgework". Great stuff, and a huge amount of music! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded from Clifford Jordan – a totally righteous little effort that was the first installment in the legendary Dolphy Series on the Strata East label! The set has Jordan working with a larger group than usual – an all-star array of players that includes Kenny Dorham and Don Cherry on trumpets, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Wilbur Ware and Richard Davis on bass, and drums from Roy Haynes, Ed Blackwell, and Albert Heath. The titles are originals by Jordan – long numbers that flow out slowly as they build up new musical ideas – all in a style that's somewhat laidback and spacious, very organic, and a bit like some of the best early 70s Impulse material by Archie Shepp. Album features 4 long tracks – "872", "Vienna", "Doug's Prelude", and "Ouagoudougou". Joanie's got none of her pop trappings here – and her vocals are nicely deep and mature – really feeling out the songs with a deeply personal vibe, and way more grown-up than we might have expected. The album's a real standout from Sommers' too-short career – and titles include "What's New", "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", "Something I Dreamed Last Night", "Oh But I Do", "That Old Devil Moon", and "So In Love". The approach here seems to draw a lot from all the best changes taking place in soulful jazz – as Jerry Corbetta manages his keyboards with this lean quality that's wonderful, and balanced with the bass, drums, and guitar in this perfect way – almost funky at many moments, and still pretty damn sharp even if not! You'll probably know that quality from the group's classic hit "Green Eyed Lady" – but it really shines through on the whole album, on titles that include "Bach Doors Man", "Chest Fever", "Things Gonna Change Soon", and "Train Kept A Rollin". Spaceship Earth is the searing second album from Sugarloaf – a set that has Jerry Corbetta wailing even more heavily on the organ than before, and the group working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them such a big act at the time! Corbetta also handles most of the lead vocals, but the group draws plenty of strength from an ability to harmonize warmly too – not in the softer modes of some of their contemporaries, but with a soaring vibe that really works well with the edges on the guitar, and the full-on bass and drums that propel the whole album along! A gem of a record that was big at the time, and never gets the due it deserves all these many years later – with cuts that include "Rusty Cloud", "Hot Water", "Spaceship Earth", "Woman", "Music Box", "Tongue In Cheek", and "Mother Nature's Wine". Dolton, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Here's some guys we'd be happy to have around at the Holidays – the ever-smokin' Ventures, who somehow manage to make every tune come out groovy – and here deliver what would HAVE to be on our shortlist of most treasured instrumental rock records in the Christmas music category! The set's an absolute classic – one that takes familiar numbers and transforms them into snow-surfing groovers, thanks to the group's great use of guitar and tightly snapping drums. A real crowd-pleaser, and a great antidote to the usual holiday fare – with tracks that include "Snow Flakes", "Sleigh Ride", "Blue Christmas", "Scrooge", "Jingle Bells", and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". ✨✧ VariousFat Possum Records – Not The Same Old Blues Crap Vol 3 ... CD
Fat Possum, Early 2000s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The third in Fat Possum's Not The Same Old Blues Crap series – and a pretty substantial creative left turn in some ways, though still focused on raw, hardscrabble blues! Fat Possum figureheads RL Burnside and T-Model Ford are in the mix, as you'd hope, along with Charles Caldwell, Little Freddie King and other blues heavies, but it's also got some reverent cuts by (then) upstarts The Black Keys, the Iggy & The Stooges and even Lyrics Born – showing the range of influence the one time unknown blues figures Fat Possum championed at the time had on various cats. Includes "Hadn't I Been Good To You" by Charles Caldwell, "Set You Free" by the pre-superstar Black Keys, "I Found Out" by Nathaniel Mayer, Juinior Kimbrough's "You Better Run" as covered by Iggy & The Stooges, "Crack Head Joe" by Little Freddie King, "Goin' Down South" by RL Burnside feat Lyrics Born, "Cocaine Bill" by Kenny Brown, "Pushin' My Luck" by Robert Belfour, "Goodbye Slim Harpo" by Robert Pete Williams and "Bad Man" by T-Model Ford. ✨✧ Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever ... CD
A&M/Polydor, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
These guys may be obscure, but they've got a super-sharp sound – one that's filled with lots of acid-drenched guitar, played with a tightness that rivals most of their bigger contemporaries at the time! Group members all had a history working with other acts – including Buffalo Springfield, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Don & The Goodtimers – so that might expect the well-done, professional approach to the record – as it does its evolving sense of heavier guitar work at the end of the 60s. Whatever the case, though, the set's plenty great to stand on its own – even without that pedigree – filled with Cream-styled fuzzy guitar lines that are totally great, focused vocals sung by group members at once, and a batch of well-penned tunes that almost deserve to be classics. Titles include "Sweet Mama", "Love Is Here", "Yellow's Dream", "Feel Like A Bandit", "Loveless Lives", "No Regrets", and "Winding Your String". 2 bonus tracks on this CD version – mono versions of "Marianne" and "Yellow's Dream". Elektra/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A group that you may not know by name – but which features some top-shelf production at the helm – work by both Fred Wesley and Azar Lawrance, plus supervision from one of the Mizell brothers! With all that talent on board, the record's way more than just another obscure one-off funk set on a major label – as some cuts echo the sharp funk that Wesley was using with the Horny Horns at the time, and others have a bit of the cosmic currents from Azar's own records – a blend of jazz funk and fusion, honed into razor-sharp grooves with a bit of an 80s vibe! The whole thing's great – a real lost gem from that brief stint when Elektra Records was putting out some real killers in the soul department – and titles include "Unfair Affair", "We'll Be Dancin", "Mysteryoso", "Game Of Life", "Come Into My Life", "For You", and "Get Up". CD features bonus tracks – "Get Up (12" disco version)" and "We'll Be Dancin (12" disco version)". CD

Disques Plusquereel (Germany), Late 1970s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A really heady record from the Venezuelan scene of the 70s – a record that mixes hard rock energy with prog-styled instrumentation, all at a level that creates some really dynamic sounds overall! These guys take off right from the start – and although the record's a concept album, the approach here is maybe a bit more open overall, and liberates the set from some of the traps that an Anglo group like this might fall into – or maybe it's just us and our weak understanding of Spanish, which allows us to take the tunes as they come! Titles include "Kazmor El Prisionero", "Mi Cancion", "Inocetnes Perdidos", "Prisa", "Advenimiento/Trayectoria", and "El Asuente". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marvin GayeWhat's Going On (gatefold cover) ... LP
Tamla, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working with an amazingly complicated approach to soul music, one that would touch the work of others for years to come. David Van DePitte arranged and conducted the whole album – with soaring orchestrations mixed with smooth modern soul, in a style that reminds us a lot of the work of Charles Stepney at Cadet, who'd been doing this sort of thing for years but with less success. In the hands of Marvin Gaye, though, the material has an amazing quality – and all the disparate elements of the album are fused together in one powerful message by Marvin's incredible voice. One that we never tire of, and a record to be listened to all the way through every time. Titles include "What's Goin On", "Save The Children", "Flyin High (In The Friendly Sky)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Rollins & Sonny StittDuets ... CD
Verve, Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest jam session albums on Verve! Although some of the label's "big horn talent" albums tended to be a bit snoozy, this one crackles with energy, and features three different classes of boppers working together perfectly on long, lively tracks with Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. In fact, it's probably the soulful rhythm section that makes the whole thing so darn good – as they really chop up some nice rhythms on cuts like "Wheatleigh Hall", "Haute Mon", and the album's classic version of "Con Alma", plus an alternate take of "Con Alma" and the previously unreleased "Anythin'". Great stuff, and essential for fans of Diz and Rollins especially! CD

Bluesville/OBC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn great work from Curtis Jones – a set that's definitely blues, but inflected with plenty of jazz too – thanks to Jones' unique phrasing on the vocals, and the sweet use of Hammond organ on the session! The lineup features Curtis on piano, with Johnny "Moose John" Walker on guitar, Robert Banks on organ, Leonard Gaskin on bass, and Belton Evans on drums – and in a way, the record almost has the unique crosscurrents of some of the blues dates recorded overseas in the 60s, than the usual sound of an American date like this. Titles include "Suicide Blues", "Lonesome Bedroom Blues", "A Whole Lot Of Talk For You", "Good Woman Blues", and "Love Season". CD also features the unissued bonus track "Pinetop Boogie". CD

Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
The only album to ever feature drummer Lawrence Marable as the leader of a group – and a cooking little hardbop set that showed the world that LA wasn't just a source for cool jazz in the 50s! The record is quite different than anything you'd hear from Chet Baker or Shorty Rogers – much more a Blue Note or Prestige-styled session, thanks in large part to the bold work of James Clay on tenor – who's noted here in the title, but is also an undeniable force in the music, and part of a wave of Texas talent that was really helping to transform the Cali sound in the 50s. Other players include the great Sonny Clark on piano – making a strong pre-Blue Note appearance – and the equally great Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Airtight", "Easy Living", "Minor Meeting", "Marbles", and "Three Fingers North". CD

✨✧ Paul McCartneyMcCartney ... LP
Apple, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The incredible solo debut of Paul McCartney – and a record that already leaps ahead from The Beatles in so many amazing ways! There's an up-close, intimate vibe to some of these songs that's really amazing – a sense of happiness that Paul never seemed to have in the Beatles' later years – mixed with some other witty twists and turns that expose a side of his songwriting that would only blossom even more in years to come! McCartney handles all instruments and vocals – but Linda also joins in on harmonies – and it's that sense of harmony between the two of them that really guides the record's spirit. Titles include "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Man We Was Lonely", "The Lovely Linda", "Momma Miss America", "Every Night", "Valentines Day", "Hot As Sun/Glasses", "Junk", and "Singalong Junk". ✨✧ Jack McDuffAin't No Sunshine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cellar Live, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Rare material from one of our favorite jazz musicians of all time – legendary Hammond hero Jack McDuff, heard here in a really wonderful setting! McDuff in the 60s was already great – an organist who played in ways that really stood out, with a sense of rhythm that was completely unique – and which only took off even more strongly as the 70s approached. Here, McDuff is in a very fruitful part of that decade – playing live in a way that really echoes his classic Heatin System album, recorded in the same year for Chess Records – really long, exploratory tracks that also feature strong solo work from Dave Young on tenor and soprano sax, Leo Johnson on tenor and flute, and Vinnie Corrado on guitar. There's an unknown trumpeter on two tracks too – and the combination of Young and Johnson is great, with all these sharp soulful edges that really highlight the new groove that McDuff was laying out in the 70s! Titles include "Ain't No Sunshine", "Blues 1 & 8", "6:30 In The Morning", "Middle Class Folk Song", "Jolly Black Giant", and the killer "Theme From Electric Surfboard". LP, Vinyl record album

Jalen Ngonda's a hell of a soul singer, and he's working here in a stunning setting that really does justice to his fantastic voice – a larger set of arrangements than you'd usually hear on a Daptone Record, in a way that rises up with a really majestic sort of vibe! Ngonda's got a way of mixing raw and smooth that almost brings to mind Marvin Gaye – and we don't use that sort of reference lightly – yet he can also slide into more of a sweet soul style too, which creates this range of expression that really deepens the record in a great way! And speaking of vibe, there's some nice vibes in the backings – and cool strings, excellent basslines, and tight percussion – on titles that include "Just Like You Used To", "So Glad I Found You", "Rapture", "It Takes A Fool", "Come Around & Love Me", "What A Difference She Made", and "Give Me Another Day".
