One of the rarest Steve Lacy albums of the 70s, and one of the most compelling too – as it features Steve in territory that's quite different than some of his group and solo performances of the period! The group is a trio – with Yuji Takahashi on piano and celeste, and Takehisa Kosugi on electric violin – and in addition to his usual soprano sax, Lacy also plays tenor, timpani, transistor radio, and a variety of other odd elements – as do the other two members of the group – all of which makes for a very open sense of improvisation, full of unusual sounds! Steve is far more open than usual – and if you were to hear the record without seeing his name on the front, you might be surprised that it's a Lacy album at all – which is only one more layer of the album's charm. A bold new frontier for use of the harp in experimental music – and that's saying a lot, given that Ayako Shinozaki recorded this album during the generation of Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby! Shinokazi takes the instrument a bit back towards its use in more serious music, but with definite avant leanings, and certainly a sound that's inspired by the bold frontiers of free improvisation – as she opens up the harp in ways that are very different than some of the sweeter, softer styles that were often used in the 20th century – and instead uses it with a really keen ear for experimental tones and sharper-edged sounds! Two pieces are solo – readings of Toru Takemitsu's "Stanza II" and Katsuhiro Tsubono's "Poem Of Rim" – and the second half features a duet with violinist Takehisa Kosugi on "Heterodyne". The Japanese scene of the 70s had plenty of experiments that blended contemporary and traditional instrumentation – but this album-length jam from percussionist Stomu Yamashta may well be one of the most striking from the time! You'll no doubt know Stomu from some of his later records that got more global circulation – but this set was originally only issued in Japan, and mixes some of his progressive leaning with a very free jazz sensibility – served up by a quartet that also features Masahiko Satoh on organ, Takehisa Kosugi on electric violin, and Hideakira Sakurai on electric koto, shamisen, and more percussion! Stomu himself is unbound, and plays with a frenzy we've not heard before – and the mix of the other instrumentation, especially koto and shamisen, creates all these really unusual sounds and tones throughout. One of David Behrman's coolest albums – a set of wonderful electronics that really lives up to the strange image on the cover – music that moves in these open, blocky passages that maybe take off from the future sound of the German electronic scene of the 70s, but which also have a starker, more spacey vibe overall! The long title track "Leapday Night" features trumpet from Rhys Chatham and Ben Neill – the latter of whom also plays "mutantrumpet" – and the use of those instruments almost links the work to that of Jon Hassell during the time, but with the electronics from Behrman much more at the core. The album also features the long "Interspecies Smalltalk" – which has similar blocky electronics, pulsating back and forth – mixed with violin from Takehisa Kosugi. CD also features one long bonus track – "Berlin NY" – with sound effects from Clara Mondshine, and keyboard improvisation from Jakino! CD

A hefty journal that's almost bigger than a book – 300+ pages, all delivered with the kind of well-penned text and really compelling subjects that always makes Blank Forms such a winner! This time around, there's a very long interview with Detroit underground legend Theo Parrish – referenced in the title, and served up with a huge amount of full color images as well – of posters, records, fliers, and more – so that the Theo Parrish section alone is over 175 pages in length! The rest of the book also features a combination of interviews and writings from creative forces – also illustrated – the first a long section that interviews dhrupad singer Amelia Cuni, followed by two pieces penned by her – the second a discussion of the music of Takehisa Kosugi by Akio Suzuki and Aki Onda, followed by writings by Kosugi on the sound objects of Suzuki! 324 pages, softcover, with illustrations throughout.
