✨✧ Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone ... CD
Anti, 2010. Used ... $3.99
A rawly beautiful set from Mavis Staples – produced by Jeff Tweedy, and we think it's her best of the past decade! There's a roomy, lived in vibe that's achingly effective on this one – the core group is her road band, with additional players including Tweedy, Patrick Sansone, Mark Greenberg, Richard Parenti, and the angelic backing vocals of Kelly Hogan and Nora O'Connor. Includes a pair of new originals written for Mavis by Jeff Tweedy – the soulful and spirited "You Are Not Alone" and the sly, swaggery "Only The Lord Knows" – plus roosty soul reworkings of traditionals "In Christ There Is No East Or West", "Creep Along Moses" and "Wonderful Savoir", the Roebuck Staples gems "Don't Knock" and "Downward Road, Allen Toussaint's "Last Train", the Rev. Gary Davis penned "I Belong To The Band" and more. CD

✨✧ Harry TaussigFate Is Only Once ... CD
Tompkins Square, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
The one and only full LP ever recorded by Harry Taussig – blending folk & blues based solo guitar traditions with his unique style – on this great, private press rarity from 1965, dug up by the folk & roots heroes at Tompkins Square! It's really fine stuff, which should appeal to folks who dig the Fahey & Basho style of primitive guitar, but Taussig brings his own flavor to the pot. The tunes have a bit more rag in them, and a real love of lonely blues guitar, and his playing the right kind of ragged to our ears, giving it a natural and truthful resonance that cuts deeper to our souls than players who go for perfection or prettiness. Very highly recommended! Tracks include Taussig's adaptation of "Baby Let Me Lay It On You/That'll Never Happen No More" by Reverend Gary Davis, plus "Blues For Zone VII", "Rev's Rag", "Sugar Babe, YOur Papa Cares For You", "Rondo To Death", "Dorian Sonata", "Fate Is Only Once" and more. ✨✧ VariousBirthright – A Black Roots Music Compendium ... CD
Craft, 2023. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A nicely rootsy set – one that mixes vintage work with new material done in a similar mode – all at a level that criss-crosses between rural blues, trad jazz, and a range of other older styles! The package is maybe less a full compendium of the roots of black music than it is a set that does a good job of changing artists while keeping an eye on a thematic sense of expression – beginning with actual roots, then using roots revival and contemporary material to echo a unified aesthetic! The package has track by track notes, and essays on the music – and the 40 track set features work from Cedric Burnside, Corey Harris & Sharde Thomas, Ranky Tanky, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Lightnin Hopkins, Staple Singers, Bennie Richardson, Golden Eagles, Martin Bogan & Armstrong, Bessie Jones, Skip James, Cephas & Wiggins, Inmate Named Peter, Rev Gary Davis, John Jackson, Odetta, Mississippi John Hurt, Professor Longhair, Campbell Brothers, Dom Flemons, Tuts Washington, and others. ✨✧ Blind Gary DavisHarlem Street Singer ... CD
Prestige/Bluesville, Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A deep, rootsy record for Bluesville by Blind Gary Davis – who sings and plays guitar on 12 spare songs with grit, soul and charm – on a mixture of traditional blues tunes and originals. Gary also recorded and performed as Reverend Gary Davis on stirring gospel blues records over the years, and while Harlem Street Singer has a strong spiritual side, it's got a downhome blues feel, too. Raw, wonderful recordings by a legend. Titles include "Tryin To Get Home", "Samson & Delilah", "Death Don't Have No Mercy", "I Belong To The Band", "Pure Religion", "I Am The Light Of This World", and "Twelve Gates To The City". CD

Not the popular ragtime material you'll know from Scott Joplin and 70s revival years – and instead a batch of raw early blues sides, all from the 78rpm generation! ✨✧ Tony WilliamsLife Time & Spring Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1964/1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two early classics from drummer Tony Williams – back to back on a single CD! First up is Life Time – a record that represents the pinnacle of Blue Note's "new thing" era! This amazing album was led by drummer Tony Williams (then just a wee lad, playing with Miles Davis, in his legendary 60s quintet) – but it's more of a "roundtable" session that features equal contributions by some of Blue Note's best avant garde players from the time, all of them young firey geniuses like Williams. The configurations of the players change drastically from track to track – and some feature Sam Rivers, Richard Davis, and Gary Peacock playing in a 2-bass and tenor lineup with Williams; others feature Bobby Hutcherson and Herbie Hancock playing heavily percussive vibes and piano solos next to Williams' assorted percussion playing; and one track doesn't even feature Williams at all, but has Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter in a beautifully moody bass and piano duet! The record is a treasure – and it's a landmark recording that's probably one of the greatest that Blue Note (or any other label) released during the 60s! Titles include "Barb's Song to The Wizard", "Memory", and "Two Pieces Of One: Red & Green". Spring is another gem – cut for Blue Note, back when he was just hitting the age of 20, and when he was already blowing the minds of masters like Jackie McLean (who first hired him) and Miles Davis (who stole him from Jackie for his own group!) with an approach to drumming that was freed from usual time constraints. Williams conception was so unique, other young modernists – like the album's Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Gary Peacock on bass – quickly benefited from his presence, as you'll hear in this amazing session that sounds very little like any other Blue Note release. Williams wrote all of the tracks, but the style is much freer than any sense of composition might imply – and the group is shaken up differently from track to track. Titles include "From Before", "Echo", and "Extras". CD

Miles DavisMiles Davis At Newport – 1955 to 1975 – The Bootleg Series Vol 4 (4CD box set) ... CD
Legacy, Mid 50s/1960s/Mid 70s. Used 4 CDs ... $29.99
Not just Miles Davis live at Newport – but Miles at Newport over the course of 20 years, in the space of eight different live performances – almost all of which are previously unreleased! Apart from the 1958 and 1969 Newport material here, most of the 4CD set features all-new, all-great vintage Miles material – with Newport performances from 1955, 1958, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, and 1975 – the last three of which are Newport festivals in Europe and New York. And these aren't just random tracks, but full sets, too – even with some announcements at the start or end – and players include Gerry Mulligan and Zoot Sims for the 1955 concert; John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans in 1958; Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams for 1966 and 1967; Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Chick Corea in 1969; a big electric group with Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz, Michel Henderson, and Mtume in 1971; and Pete Cosey, Davie Liebman, Reggie Lucas, and Mtume for the 1973 and 1975 shows. A huge amount of material – 4 CDs in a great package, with detailed notes, too! CD

✨✧ Miles DavisBitches Brew Live ... CD
Columbia, 1969/1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent compilation of concert recordings from Miles Davis – the first 3 numbers from the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival and capturing Miles, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette in the months before the studio version of Bitches Brew – plus 6 tracks from Isle Of Wight in the months after the revolutionary Bitches Brew came out! The earlier tracks from Newport were previously unissued, and include "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down" (the earliest known professional, non-bootleg live recording of this track and it's a monster), "Sanctuary" and "It's About Time". The rest of the CD features the full live set from the iconic Isle Of Wight festival in 1970 – Miles in full-on funked out mode with Gary Bartz, Keith Jarrett and Airto Moreira in addition to the above mentioned players. The Isle Of Wight stuff was previously included with the mammoth Complete Columbia Recordings box set, but never issued completely anywhere else. Those tracks include "Directions", "Bitches Brew", "It's About That Time", a totally different, shorter and spacier take on "Sanctuary", "Spanish Key" and "The Theme". Rare and overlooked live Miles, recorded on a pair of dates during one of the most incredible 13 month periods that any artist ever lived! CD
