Ghost Funk Orchestra — Ode To Escapism ... CD 4.99

This one-man orchestra just keeps on getting better and better with each new record – working with the funk you'd expect from the name, but also all these cool and moody touches that mix together David Axelrod-like ambition with some of the sharper snap of hip hop production! This time around, Seth Applebaum has a fair bit of strings and horns in the mix – plus added voices, some strong lead singers – and an array of sonic touches that make for a richness that's much deeper than it is ghostly! Previous records were good, but Seth's really onto something great hear – and mixes together strands of sounds into something that's much richer than its parts – emerging as a surprising maestro for the underground, on titles that include "Stoop Talk", "Mourning", "Drop Me A Line", "Little Bird", "Fuzzy Logic", "Quiet Soul", "Tojours", "Queen Bee", and "Cost Of Living".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Bongolian
Blow Up (UK), 2002. Used
A feast of funky mod instrumentals from the great Bongolian! This grooooooovy London combo takes the best bits of the 60s and 70s, rolls them into a tight retro approach that includes organ, clavinet, flute, guitar, timbales, vibes, and of course, plenty of bongo work – with a sound that's ... CD
Mocambo (Germany), 2007. Used
Contemporary funk, but with a groove deep enough to warrant the "rare" promised in the title – as most of these numbers would stand strongly next to the best funky 45s from the late 60s and early 70s! The production is great throughout – very hard-edged, and with a back-to-bas ... CD

Cherry Boppers

Play It Again
Keep On Boppin (Netherlands), 2008. Used

Legere (Germany), 2012. Used
A mighty funky set from The Impellers – a contemporary combo who really get some grit into their grooves, and recreate a perfect late 60s/early 70s funky soul sound! The group sports a sweet female singer in the lead – who creates a great "bad sister" vibe on the cuts that ... CD

Greyboy Allstars

Town Called Earth
Greyboy, 1997. Used
The most recent CD by the Greyboy All Stars, and a nice tight batch of grooves with a loud jazz funk sound in the tradition of the JBs, or some of the classic recordings from the late 60's on Prestige. Karl Denson and Robert Walter are in the group, and the ensemble has a large loud horn section. ... CD

Greyboy Allstars

West Coast Boogaloo
Greyboy, 1994. Used
The debut album from the Greboy Allstars – a live group, and one that works in contrast to the funky beats that Greyboy was producing on his own – but at a level that still shares an equally strong love of the best sounds of 70s funk! These guys were very early in the deep funk game ... CD
