I'll Get A Deal

LP (Item 915913) Mr R&B (Sweden), Early 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

Great early work from Margie Day – a singer most folks know as a soul star in the 60s – working here more in an R&B mode with backings from the groups of Paul Williams and The Griffin Brothers!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Great pre-soul work from this important figure on the New Orleans scene! LP, Vinyl record album
Mr R&B (Sweden), Late 50s. Near Mint-
An excellent compilation of Solomon Burke's earliest recordings! These sides were cut for the Apollo label before Solomon hooked up with Atlantic, and they're quite hard to find in any format. The sound's rougher than on Solomon's Atlantic sides – but his voice is still wonderful, and there' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Green

Al Green Is Love
Hi Records, 1975. Very Good+
Heavenly soul doesn't get any more heavenly than this! Al Green's at the height of his powers here – working in that wonderfully smooth, wonderfully warm style that made his early 70s material so wonderful! This album's maybe slightly less iconic than some of Green's other titles for Hi ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chocolate Jam Co

Spread Of The Future
Epic, 1979. Very Good
A funky fusion classic from the 70s – totally great work from Chocolate Jam Company, a hip little group headed up by percussionist Leon Ndugu Chancler! The core sound is soul, but there's plenty of fusion touches as well – thanks to a great lineup of players that includes Oscar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Leon Haywood

It's Got To Be Mellow
Decca, 1967. Very Good
A wonderful early record by Leon Haywood – very different than any of his later work! The album showcases both sides of Haywood's talent – as side one features Leon singing in a sweet soulful style, and side two's all-instrumental, with Leon atop the Hammond B-3, grooving away with a ... Westbound, 1976. Near Mint-
A funky tribute to all the "Super Groupies" who were helping out the 70s music scene – maybe the closest thing that Junie Morrisson every came to a tribute album – and a set that's got all the same wonderful complexity of his other solo albums on Westbound! As with those ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sheree Brown

Music
Capitol, 1982. Very Good+
One of the two beautifully sweet albums of soul that the lovely Sheree Brown cut for Capitol in the early 80s. This one has less of a smooth jazzy sound than her first one, but it compensates by adding some tracks in a nice 80s groove mode – pushing the sound a bit further than before. ... Bootsy Collins steps strongly from the shadow of George Clinton here – and wrote, arranged, and produced most of the album himself! Of course, George was having plenty of his own troubles at the time – but that only allowed Bootsy to take the helm even more, and step out with a batch ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Sweet & Sour Tears
ABC, 1964. Near Mint-
Easily one of the best Ray Charles albums on ABC – if not one of the best Ray Charles albums of all-time. Ray's in his C&W mode here, but it's a bit more restrained than on other LPs, and is replaced here by a sophisticated style that works perfectly with his heartbreaking voice. Proof ... Columbia, 1976. Near Mint-
No stopping Tower Of Power in the 70s – as the set's a cool Columbia session from the group, and one that features a well-crafted groove throughout! The overall approach is a bit warmer and less jamming than before – but in ways that really show the group hitting some strong notes on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Undisputed Truth

Law Of The Land
Gordy, 1973. Near Mint-
An unstoppable groove from The Undisputed Truth – a group who worked with Norman Whitfield in the same psychedelic soul territory as The Temptations – and who arguably got the sound across even better than them! This set's not as much of a bit hit as the group's other records from the ... LP, Vinyl record album
