Dark Is The Sun

LP (Item 909201) Jazzman (UK), 2011 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Greg Foat Group — Dark Is The Sun ... LP 24.99

A brilliant and rare new project on the Jazzman label – the debut LP from keyboards, synths and harpsichord adventurer Greg Foat and his cosmos-searching Group – amazing stuff that's truly on par with the deep, lost rarities that Jazzman so lovingly mines for and reissues! The hints of the greatness to come that so piqued our interest on the preceding 10-inch EP are delivered up in full, and actually surpasses our expectations. There's just such stylistic and instrumental depth going on here, and it's delivered in accessibly groovy way! The album was recorded in Sweden with instrumentation including loads of great congas, drums and other percussion, a female choir brings lovely wordless vocals, plus guitars, flugelhorn, trombone and trumpet. It's evocative of trippy-jazzy soundtracks and sound library material, but like other contemporary acts that Jazzman as championed – most notably, the Natural Yogurt Band – it's got a unique vibe all it's own. Here's hoping for a career's worth of cool music from Mr. Foat! Includes "Time Piece 1", "Dark Is The Sun" (Parts 1-4), "Hello Old Friend", "Yeah You Are", "Uncle Bessie", "Bright Is The Sun" and "Time Piece 2 (Epilogue)".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2nd pressing in the purple cover.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stanley Turrentine

Cherry
CTI, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some ... Brian Auger's Oblivion Express

Reinforcements
RCA, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great later sleeper from Brian Auger – a record that's much deeper and more soulful than some of his earlier work – and done in a soaring style that's really great! Alex Lighterwood sings as much as Auger plays the keys here, but that's ok with us – because he fuses his voice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Inside Straight
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Soul Experiment
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
A wonderful session of hip soul jazz tracks from Freddie Hubbard – mostly short tight and groovy, but played with a sophisticated style that points the way towards the soul jazz sound of the 70s. Soul jazz organ with big band? It's been done – and never better than on this set – which features Brother Jack's classic quartet – with George Benson, Red Hollway, and Joe Dukes – next to the the screamin' orchestrations of a hip Benny Golson! Golson leads a crack band ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shadow Vignettes

Birth Of A Notion
Sessom, 1985. Near Mint-
Chicago reed player Ed Wilkerson (also known as the leader of 8 Bold Souls, and a member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble) formed this group in the 80's as sort of a mixed large band of Chicago avant garde players, but with more of a focus on tighter swingin' sounds. This, their only LP, includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modal Coltrane at its finest – a record that almost returns the great one to the territory explored at the end of his years at Atlantic Records, but which still incorporates all of the new ideas learned afterwards! John Coltrane

Transition
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
There's no sense of "transition" here – as the album's an incredibly solid one, and stands with John Coltrane's best mid 60s work for Impulse – even if the session wasn't issued by the label until after his early death! The work builds strongly on the Love Supreme vibe – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Phenix
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall!
