State Of The Art

LP (Item 868227) Milestone, 1985 — Condition: Very Good+
With Lonnie Smith, Melvin Sparks, Stanley Banks, Bernard Davis, and Jesse Cheese Hameen.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy McGriff

Tailgunner
Lester Radio Corporation, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
Jimmy McGriff in a very cool 70s mode – hitting some of the fuller, more soul-based styles that Johnny Hammond and Jimmy Smith were exploring in the middle of the decade – while still also displaying a hell of a talent on the organ as well! The album has extra keyboards from Pat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nat Adderley

Scavenger
Milestone, 1968. Very Good+
One of the best-ever Nat Adderley albums, and a damn funky set of tracks that has a tight soulful feel! The session's got a similar feel to some of the other rare late 60s Milestone albums (like the 2 killers by Bobby Timmons!) – especially in that it's got a group that plays with the ... Sonny Rollins

Way I Feel
Milestone, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Sonny Rollins' sweetest electric sessions from the 70s – a date that features Patrice Rushen handling some keyboards, and Lee Ritenour on guitar – but Sonny blowing solid, soulful tenor all the way through! The setting is the sort that might initially turn off fans of Rollins' ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, 1955/1956. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2 great trio sides by Thelonious, collected for reissue by Milestone. The Unique Thelonious Monk's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch! There's less of Monk's creative composition and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ron Carter

A Song For You
Milestone, 1978. Very Good+
Ron Carter's such a great player, he can always shine in so many modes – bringing the bass not just into the forefront of a tune, but taking into places that other musicians wouldn't reach! Storm Warning
Milestone, 1977. Very Good+
Recorded after his classic work with Larry Mizell, and produced by Johnny himself, but still trying to be very much in the Mizell-sounding vein! Reuben Wilson & The Cost Of Living

Got To Get Your Own
Cadet, 1975. Very Good+
Monster funk from Hammond hero Reuben Wilson – an album of hard-burning, bad-walking tunes that are a fair bit different than most of his other work!
