Novi In Wonderland

LP (Item 854960) Saba/MPS (Germany), 1968 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Originally: 29.99
One of the earliest records by the legendary Novi Singers – and a rare MPS set that exposed the group to a larger European audience! Novi hail from Poland, but have a name that's an condensation of the English phrase "new original vocal instruments" – a great summation of the way the quartet use their voices to recreate the feel of instruments in modern jazz – a mode first explored by the Lambert Hendricks & Ross group in the US, but taken to a much farther extreme on this set! The group are supported here by a border-crossing small combo of musicians that includes Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Adam Makowicz on piano, and Billy Brooks on drums – and the sound is cool, laidback, and very groovy – extremely tight, almost even more so than some of the group's Polish albums! Titles include "The Second Side", "Secret Life", "Kulfon", and "Apartment Under The Roof".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Beautiful 180 gram pressing, on Speakers Corner – still in shrink with hype sticker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Abbey Lincoln

Abbey Is Blue
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint-
Key early work by Abbey – no so much the "blue" album you'd guess from the title, but a session that's filled with the kind of anger and emotion that makes us love her so much when she's this good! The group here is very hip – an ensemble brought to the date by her then-partne ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
Something of an addition to the Verve "songbook" mode of the 50s – but it's also one that's a lot more dynamic than the others, thanks to some very jazzy arrangements from Billy May! The groove here is very upbeat and jazzy – hard-swinging in the manner that May forged with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Hip vocalist Bobby Troup pays tribute to another fairly hip LA songwriter – the great Johnny Mercer, the man who helped to build Capitol Records in the late 40s! Dinah Washington

In The Land Of Hi Fi
EmArcy, 1956. Near Mint-
The Hi Fi in the title might imply that there's a bit more going on here arrangement-wise than on some of Dinah's other albums – but the scoring by Hal Mooney is still pretty straight, in a sophisticated jazzy mode that works best with the vocals, and which never overwhelms the singing for ...
