❔

Killer jazz and soul work from Snowboy – some overlooked sides that are easily some of the best grooves of his scene at the time! Snowboy first got his start as a Latin percussionist – adding a lot of firey energy to the London jazz scene in the early Acid Jazz years – but by the time of these recordings, he'd stretched out in his groove a bit more – working under his own name, or with his MFOS combo, all in a mode that's overflowing with influences from 70s funk, soul, and club! The style here is quite different than the Snowboy you might know – and the production is surprisingly wonderful, and very faithful to the older roots of these music – just warm enough to get the groove right, but never too much so to sound commercial. Vocalists include Noel McKoy, Anna Ross, and Paul Taylor – and titles include great remakes of Leroy Hutson's "Lucky Fellow" and Leo's Sunship's "Give Me The Sunshine", plus the tracks "Astralisation", "Girl Overboard", "El Padrino", "Call For Bobby", "Funky Djembe", "The New Avengers", "Jazzakuti", "Where Is The Love", "Where Love Lives", and "24 For Betty Page".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Medeski, Martin & Wood

Friday Afternoon In The Universe
Ryko/Gramavision, 1995. Used
The second Gramavision album by MM&W, and a batch of grooves that shows them opening up their style a lot more than on their first one. There's equal parts of Larry Young and Jimmy McGriff mixed into the organ here, and the rhythm, while tight, is also got a nice open-ended feel. Titles ... CD

Bamboos

Step It Up
Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity, 2006. Used
Deep funk from down under – and the stunning full length debut by The Bamboos! To date, the group's really only had 2 45s to their name – but those records alone got The Bamboos plenty of attention – making this record one of the most eagerly-anticipated sets we've stocked in ... CD

Galactic

Coolin' Off
Fog City/Capricorn, 1996. Used
Choppy New Orleans styled funk in the tradition of the Meters, and recorded with a lot of fidelity to the original sound. Not as amazing as the original, natch, but still surprisingly funky with a good earthy sound to it. CD
Legere (France), 2017. Used
A great introduction to the voice of Gabriel Tajeu – a singer who has this way of grabbing us right from the very first note, with a vibe that's classic enough to have made him huge way back in the 70s! Gabriel's music has a sound that's as sunny as the image on the cover – a style ... CD

Greyboy

Soul Mosaic
Ubiquity, 2004. Used
One of the most unified albums we've ever heard from Greyboy – an excellent little set that perfectly bridges his two loves of funk and hip hop! The core style is in the hip hop-infused mode of earlier years – with lots of programming and scratches by Greyboy himself – but there's ... CD

Al Supersonic & The Teenagers

It's Alright
Unique (Germany), 2013. Used
Al Supersonic has a mighty nice vocal approach on this retro-soul set – a style that's a bit looser and maybe more personal than some other singers in recent years – a quality that gives the the whole thing a pretty sweet edge! Al's a bit less "perfect" than some of the deep ... CD

Budos Band

Budos Band
Daptone, 2005. Used
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound ... CD

Budos Band

Budos Band III
Daptone, 2010. Used
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The ... CD

Budos Band

Budos Band 2
Daptone, 2007. Used
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this ... CD

Dimitri From Paris

Sacrebleu
Yellow/Atlantic, 1995. Used
Classic first by the enigmatic Dimitri – one of the first modern artists to take the bachelor pad sound of the 50s, and transform it into funky grooves for the 90s. The whole thing's got a wonderfully loungey sound – with nice bits of Frenchiness and downtempo beats, plus other jazzy ... CD
