Stretchin' Out

LP (Item 8336) Pacific Jazz, 1964 — Condition: Very Good+

The Jazz Crusaders at their early best – swinging hard, and virtually defining the sound of soul jazz on the west coast scene of the 60s! The sound here is impeccable – tight rhythms overlaid with searing solos – all the best the young group had to offer, thanks to the early genius of Wayne Henderson on trombone, Wilton Felder on tenor and alto, Joe Sample on piano, and Stix Hooper on drums. The set also features a bit of guitar from Joe Pass, and bass from Monk Montgomery – who brings in a nice bottom to the rhythms – furthering the groove that really keeps things going! The set list is a mix of originals and tracks by other jazz artists, and includes "Long John", "Out Back", "Bachafillen", "Sweetwater", and "You Are Only Sometimes Rain".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono blue & silver label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blues Message
Pacific Jazz, 1960. Near Mint-
Great LA soul jazz session featuring the deep Texas tenor of Curtis Amy and the funky organ of Paul Bryant! Also present is Roy Brewster, the great, under-recorded LA valve trombonist, whose playing here gives the session a nice round bottom. 5 long cuts, with earthy, bluesy solos, and a very ... New One!
Pacific Jazz, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very hard-burning work from Buddy's hip band of the mid 60s – a large ensemble, but one that features searing horn parts that cut through the bigger arrangements with ease! Les McCann Sings
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good+
An early vocal set from Les McCann – quite unusual, and pretty darn soulful as well! Booker 'N Brass
Pacific Jazz, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Although the "with brass" tag of this one might make you think it's a hokey big band album, the record is actually a far-reaching modernist session that has Book's edgey tenor fronting a large-ish group filled with some of the best trumpet and trombone players of his generation – ... Groovin' With Jug
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Sealed
Quite an unusual date – both for the players, who are normally more at home on Prestige Records – and for the Pacific Jazz label, who were then a cornerstone of west coast cool jazz!
