Originally: 16.99
The complete sessions by the best-known early version of The Hampton Hawes Trio – one that featured Red Mitchell on bass and Chuck Thompson on drums, heard here on the group's first three albums for the Contemporary label! The Hawes approach to the keys was a very popular one at the time – a mix of bop invention and older-styled phrasing – played mostly over standards, but creative and inventive enough to put Hampton on a par with Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, and some of the other rising trio talents of the 50s. Most of the set's 35 tracks were done in studio mode – but the package also features 3 bonus live numbers from the Embers night club in 1956, plus 3 more bonus tracks from live LA recordings – featuring either Mel Lewis or Shelly Manne in the drum chair. Titles include "Hamp's Blues", "Feeling Fine", "I Got Rhythm", "Round Midnight", "Blues For Jacques", "Section Blues", "Yesterdays", "Carioca", "Just Squeeze Me", "Body & Soul", "Coolin The Blues", "Walkin", and "The Champ".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Joe Gordon

Lookin' Good!
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used
An incredible session of hardbop from early 60s LA – easily one of the hippest and hardest-hitting albums ever recorded for Contemporary Records! Joe Gordon passed away early in 1963, and this album's one of a rare few he made as a leader – but even if it was the only one, it might ... CD

Barney Kessel/Shelly Manne/Ray Brown

Straight Ahead
Contemporary/OJC, 1975. Used
A rare 70s reunion for the Poll Winners trio of Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, and Shelly Manne – one that has them all looking a bit shaggy on the cover, but still plenty darn tight in the grooves of the record! There's a really nice change here from the earlier sound of the group – longer ... CD

Frank Morgan & The McCoy Tyner Trio

Major Changes
Contemporary, 1987. Used
Features Frank Morgan on alto and McCoy Tyner on piano, with Avery Sharpe on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks include "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Emily", "Search For Peace", "Frank's Back", and "Theme From Love Story". CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1962. Used
Wonderfully romping work from Phineas Newborn – and a great showcase for the harder side of his sound on the piano, something that didn't always show up on his RCA albums of the 50s! The style here has plenty of bluesy overtones – not in a cliched soul jazz way, but in an earthy mode ... CD

Bobby Hutcherson

Solo/Quartet
Contemporary/OJC, 1981. Used
Bobby Hutcherson breaks it down in two different ways – solo on the first half of the record, and in a quartet on the rest! The set begins in a very spare way – Bobby playing vibes, marimba, xylophone, and bells – often a bit overdubbed, so that although alone, Hutcherson fills ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1960. Used
Art's blowing with a quiet intensity here – not as far out as you might expect from the title, but with that crisp genius that still graced all of his records from the time! The album features a quartet with Dolo Coker on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Frank Butler on drums – working ... CD
Contemporary/Victor (Japan), 1956. Used
A lost treasure – finally brought back to light! The album features previously unissued material by the team of Art Pepper and Warne Marsh – tracks recorded back in 1956 for Contemporary records, but only issued many years later as part of the Complete Contemporary project for Pepper's ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1964. Used
The Newborn Touch is always a great one, but it sounds especially nice on this record – a set that seems to go even farther than any of Phineas' earlier trio sessions! There's an almost-ambitious sound to the record that we really like a lot – one that possibly comes from Newborn's ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1976. Used
The "trip" here is a mellow one – not the soaring, spacey style you might expect in a long line of drug-reference titles for Art Pepper albums – but that difference is a-ok with us, because Art's really hitting some great new territory here, thanks to a hip trio that includes ... CD

Goran Ivanovic & Fareed Haque

Seven Boats
Proteus, 2004. Used
Features Goran Ivanovic and Fareed Haque on guitars. CD

Arturo O'Farrill

Legacies
Blue Note, 2023. Used
A real back-to-basics album from Arturo O'Farrill, but one that maybe marks a strong step forward too – as Arturo is recording here for Blue Note in a style that mixes familiar piano trio modes with some of the Latin-style rhythms you might expect – not straight Latin jazz piano by any ... CD

Stanley Turrentine

More Than A Mood
BMG/Music Masters, 1992. Used
A great lineup with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and fluglelhorn, Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. CD
